Omooba77: The Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi, has said none of the Boko Haram suspects detained at Kuje prison in Abuja was found after the attack on the facilities on Tuesday night.
Sources had told Daily Trust that high-profile Boko Haram suspects and bandits escaped during the invasion of the prison on Tuesday night.
Addressing journalists after taking an assessment tour of the facility, the minister said, “The attack started around 10:30pm. They came in their numbers gained entrance into the prison and they released some of the inmates and which we are now following to see the kind of inmates that they have released.
“Very soon, we will give you the correct figure of the inmates that were taken. Aside that, we are trying to see what we can do to ensure that all escapees are returned back.
The prison is accommodating about 994 inmates and over 600 escaped. Many people have been recaptured and brought back to the prison. Maybe by the close of the day, more will have been captured and returned.
“I think everything is under control. The people who came to do this activity, from the records, we believe they belong to a particular group. Most likely, they are Boko Haram members because we have sizeable number of Boko Haram suspects in detention, and presently we cannot locate any of them.
“I think they are about 64 in the prison and none of them now is available they have all escaped.”

The Federal Government on Tuesday said about 62 per cent of citizens in Nigeria lacked access to electricity, while 90 per cent had no access to modern cooking fuels. It, however, stated that efforts were ongoing to address the situation by harnessing the potential in the gas sector through the development of critical infrastructures across the country. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, who disclosed this during his address at the ongoing 2022 Nigeria Oil and Gas conference in Abuja, said the government was also working hard to minimise gas flaring in Nigeria. He said, “Previous studies have presented Nigeria as an energy poor country. 62 per cent of Nigerians lack access to electricity and 90 per cent lack access to modern cooking fuels. Our government is working on many initiatives to tackle these challenges, one of which is the gas to power initiative aimed at minimising gas flaring and harnessing our gas resources to electricity to meet Nigeria’s electricity demands.” The Nigerian power sector is currently confronted with many challenges, notable among them is the lack of gas required to fire-up gas-powered electricity generating plants. This has contributed to abysmal supply of electricity to over 200 million residents of Nigeria, as power producers struggle to provide between 3,500 megawatts to 4,000MW of electricity on the national grid daily. But Sylva told participants at the 2022 NOG on Tuesday that “it is very worthy to note that the Federal Government is providing a lot of enablers, which are needed to realise the full potential of the gas sector.” He added, “This includes the development of critical infrastructures and systems such as the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Gas Pipeline, Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano Gas Pipeline, and Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code.” Sylva said the Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code provided streamlined operational and fiscal terms for third-party use of gas distribution and transmission infrastructures. The minister noted that one of the most important provisions of the PIA for the gas sector was the establishment of the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, which shall have the power to make equity investments into relevant gas infrastructure projects. This, he said, would consequently encourage private sector investment through participation and risk sharing. https://punchng.com/62-nigerians-without-electricity-90-lack-cooking-fuels-fg |

OPEC Secretary-General Mohammad Barkindo, an oil industry veteran who steered the group through the creation of the OPEC+ alliance, has died in his native Nigeria, according to officials. Barkindo, 63, was in the final weeks of his six-year tenure as the top diplomat at the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, where he headed its Vienna-based secretariat. He had returned to Abuja in preparation for a post-OPEC career. Barkindo oversaw one of the most turbulent periods in the organization’s history, beginning with the creation of the OPEC+ coalition just months after his appointment in summer 2016. That saw the group enter into a once-unthinkable partnership with non-members such as Russia. Barkindo engaged in a flurry of shuttle diplomacy to bring the oil producers together, personally meeting leaders including Russia’s Vladimir Putin. His term spanned a series of production cuts intended to keep global oil markets in balance, culminating in the unprecedented reductions during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. His successor, Haitham Al-Ghais of Kuwait, was already due to assume the position from the beginning of next month. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-06/opec-secretary-general-mohammad-barkindo-dies-officials-say

Politics › Support Sowore Instead Of Obi – Ex-labour Party Chair by treesun(op): 1:51pm On Jul 05, 2022 |
A former Chairman of the Labour Party, the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja chapter, Comrade Che Oyinatumba, has urged Nigerian workers and other citizens to support the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, instead of the Labour Party flag bearer, Peter Obi, in the 2023 elections. Oyinatumba, who confirmed his position to our correspondent, Tuesday morning, in a telephone conversation, said he was standing by his words. In a viral video obtained by The PUNCH, Onyinatumba had said in a programme held last Friday in Abuja, in honour of a late veteran activist, Segun Sango, that people should “do what they are doing to support Obi for Sowore instead.” “If we are saying it is the structure and getting the workers to mobilise and build Labour Party, we can do the same for Sowore who has a legal tendency to what we believe in than this capitalist called Peter Obi.” He maintained that Obi would leave the Labour Party once he won the presidential election, adding that it was only easier to rally around Sowore than Obi. “Now we can agree that if Obi wins this election, he would leave. It would be easier and more manageable for us to rally round a Sowore and his party, or bring him to the Labour Party and give him the structure,” Onyinatumba said. “It is not true that the Nigerian Labour Congress is reclaiming the Labour Party,” he said, adding that the resolution of the NLC a few days ago did not moblise support for Obi, rather their Kebbi State governorship choice, an All Progressives Congress candidate, wondering why “the NLC would be supporting APC in Kebbi and asking other states to mobilise for Labour Party.” “The NLC/Trade Union Congress is headed by those who do not share our sentiment. The NLC is led by those who are looking for jobs and are using Trade Union as a pensionable job, so they are not interested in claiming anything,” he had added in the video. Meanwhile, in a resolution of the meeting of the National Executive Council of the NLC, dated June 30, 2022, obtained by The PUNCH, it was observed that the NLC leadership, despite canvassing for support for its governorship choice in Kebbi State, Dr Nasir Idris, it had not necessarily thrown weight behind the candidacy of Peter Obi. The resolution, signed by the President and General Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, respectively, addressed the 2023 polls, saying “In line with earlier organ decisions, the NEC called on the state structures of the NLC to activate their local government political committees to sensitise workers and the general populace on the need to vote in Labour Party candidates across all elective positions in the 2023 general election; and “The NLC will organise a mega rally in Kebbi State in support of its Deputy President, Dr Nasir Idris, who has emerged as a governorship candidate in Kebbi State and will also support its Chairperson in Niger State in order to ensure victory at the polls.” Obi is believed to have garnered much support mainly from South-East citizens, particularly on social media, with a very online-active layer, said by some to be “aggressive” supporters. However, The PUNCH reported that Peter Obi, had on Sunday, urged his supporters to be tolerant of dissenting views and divergent opinions. In a series of tweets posted to his verified Twitter page, @PeterObi, the former governor of Anambra State appealed to his supporters to learn from views different from theirs. While acknowledging that “the frustration and anger in the country” could have been responsible for his followers’ intolerance of dissenting views, Obi appealed that the energy should be channelled positively. He asked his supporters to express themselves with grace “so as not to precipitately shut doors to future collaborations and sustainable nation-building.” https://punchng.com/support-sowore-instead-of-obi-ex-labour-party-chair/ |

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State says residents of the state consume about N4.5 billion worth of food daily just as he reiterated commitment to food security.
Sanwo-Olu said this at the opening ceremony of a two-day zonal sensitisation workshop with the theme: “Implementation of Food Systems Transformation Pathways in Nigeria 2022,” on Monday in Lagos.
The workshop was organised by the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning in collaboration with Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Lagos Ministry of Economic, Planning and Budget.
Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti are participating with a Lagos as coordinating state for Southwest goepolitical zone.
The governor represented by Mr Sam Egube, Commissioner for Economic, Planning and Budget, said that the state had decided to take the bull by the horn in guaranteeing food security for people with different agricultural and food value chain.
According to him, Lagos has a rich history of economic growth and transformation.
“Although it covers only 0.4 per cent of Nigeria’s territorial land mass making it the smallest in the country.
“It accounts for over 60 per cent of industrial and commercial activities. Lagos is a coastal state and has an extremely limited arable land space and home to about 21 million people.
“Its residents consume about N4.5 billion worth of food daily and 50 per cent of beef produced in the country running into several billions in other trading activities with markets cutting across all the local government areas in the state,” he said.
He called for joint collaboration among Southwest goepolitical zone to implement the Food Systems Transformation Pathways 2022.
Sanwo-Olu added that improving the food systems would influence positive changes and as well address multiple challenges being experienced in the country.
He said that the state agric roadmap was a deliberate effort to develop the agricultural sector by way of interventions from the public and private sector, international technical and donor organisations.
“I am aware that the need for states across the six geopolitical zones to be adequately sensitised on the implementation of the National Food Systems Transformation Pathways is the basis for this workshop.
“It gives me great pleasure to note that Lagos State was selected to host the South West geopolitical sensitisation which I consider as an acknowledgement of the positive impacts our policies and efforts are making in the agricultural sector.
“As a state government, we will continue to provide infrastructure and incentives to support all private sector initiatives where required.
“History has shown that any society that is unable to provide food guarantee, its security is open to abuse and utmost danger,” he said.
The governor commended the efforts of the Federal Government on its unrelenting efforts to ensure that the food systems summit in conjunction with the United Nations is developed.
“I assure you that the Lagos State Government is fully committed to achieving a food secured Lagos and Nigeria through partnership with all national and sub-national entities as well as private sector and international technical and donor organisations.
He urged all participants at the workshop to show commitment by sharing ideas and opinions on the selected programmes slated to kick-start implementation.
Mr Mathias Schmale, the Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator, United Nations, commended the Federal Government for its consistent efforts toward sustainable food systems in the country.
Schmale who was represented by Mr Isiaka Ibrahim, UN Coordinator in Lagos, reiterated that the UN would continue to work with government and as well strengthen collaborations with all stakeholders in support of this transformational journey.
“Today marks another important step in the highly anticipated transformational change we have worked for in partnership.
“The zonal sensitisation workshop is designed to onboard all of us as we begin to bring synergy across states and regions.
“The momentum at which the Federal Government is accelerating the national food systems transformation pathways is highly commendable.

“Today, the government has identified three critical priority actions to be addressed at all levels to achieve food security and reduce malnutrition among the most vulnerable and at-risk populations in Nigeria.
“They are to achieve a sustainable food system that works for all; to ensure the achievement of all SDGs in the next decade.
Mrs Olusola Idowu, the National Convener/Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, said an implementation team made up of key stakeholders had been constituted to develop an implementation plan.
Idowu noted that the workshop provides an opportunity to present and discuss the identified priority actions selected for implementation from January 2022.
She added that it would help to define and assign roles and responsibilities for effective implementation of the priority actions.
Idowu noted that the workshop was being held in all the six geopolitical zones concurrently from July 4 to 8, focusing on three low hanging fruit programmes and 80 priority actions.
“Please, I make this passionate appeal that we all ensure that this implementation stage is truly for implementation.
“Wherein, we do less talk and more action so that we can impact lives of Nigerians,” she said.
M. Abisola Olusanya, the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, said that food systems remained an important part of the national economy.
Olusanya said that effective food system had contributed to a variety of solutions to developmental challenges.
She said that there had been dialogues amongst all relevant stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones of the country since 2021 which gave birth to the National Pathways for Sustainable Food Systems. (NAN) https://www.nextedition.com.ng/lagos-residents-consume-n4-5bn-food-daily-sanwo-olu

Politics › Sheikh Haliru Abdullahi Maraya Warns Against Same-Faith Presidential Ticket by treesun(op): 3:00pm On Jul 04, 2022 |
A former Special Adviser on Islamic Matters to late governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa of Kaduna State, Sheikh Haliru Abdullahi Maraya, has opined that those promoting the idea of a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian presidential ticket, in today’s Nigeria, do not wish the country well now that it is divided along religious fault lines.
Speaking on “Islamic view on same-faith presidential ticket in today’s Nigeria”, the former Special Adviser stated, “Those promoting the idea of a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian presidential ticket, in today’s Nigeria, do not wish the country well especially now that it is divided along religious fault lines.”
He explained that it’s wrong for a Muslim to support a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket as it is at variance with the spirit of justice which the religion of Islam promotes and defends at all times.
“I don’t think there is a Muslim who will support a Christian-Christian presidential ticket. Undoubtedly, the Muslims would cry out for the perpetration of injustice against them,” he said.
Sheikh Maraya further explained, “The combination of a Muslim and non-Muslim, in a presidential ticket, in Nigeria of today, also gives vent to the spirit of justice, fairness and equity as enshrined in the religion of Islam. Remember, the country is for the Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The religion of Islam orders the sincere administration of justice, on all, regardless of any distinction, be it religious, ethnic, geographical, tribal, inter alia.
“The religion enjoins its adherents to always stand for justice as a matter of principle, whether for Muslims or non-Muslims, even if justice should side against them. The Quran says: “and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just” (Q5:8 ). As a Muslim, one is enjoined by the religion to only love for mankind, regardless of any social difference, what they love for themselves.”
He said that Nigeria is a multi-religious country of more than 200million people who are Muslims and non-Muslims, saying that the country is owned by more than 200million citizens who are of diverse religious background.
Sheikh further Maraya advised, “In order to be just to all the citizens of the country, and also to balance the apparent religious sentiments prevalent in the country, Nigeria’s politicians and its major political parties have avoided fielding same-faith presidential candidates since the present political dispensation from 1999.
“In any event, the combination of people of different religious background, on a presidential ticket, appears to give vent to the constitutional requirement that the composition of the federal government and its agencies should reflect the federal character of the country, and the need to promote national unity, thereby ensuring that there is no predominance of sectional groups in the government, as enshrined in Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended.”
He stated that he wondered what the country would be should the various agitations in the land assume a religious dimension, stressing that no religion has the monopoly of qualified people who have the capacity to serve as running mates to presidential candidates if merit should be the parameter for the nomination of running mates.
“Undoubtedly, both Muslims and non-Muslims, in Nigeria of today, are endowed with capable and qualified persons for the offices of the President and Vice-President alike. Consequently, justice, fairness and equity, as enjoined by the religion of Islam, demand that a Muslim presidential candidate should nominate a non-Muslim as their running mate, and a non-Muslim presidential candidate should nominate a Muslim as their running mate, in Nigeria of today, for the sake of the promotion of national unity and cohesion,” he stressed.
To balance the geographical and ethnic sentiments in the country, he opined that the politicians and major political parties have never contemplated fielding candidates of the same geographical and ethnic leanings, saying that they have never fielded a north-north or a south-south presidential ticket.
He added that it is common sense and the appreciation of Nigeria’s religious diversity to abhor and discourage a same-faith presidential ticket, stressing, “The unity of our beloved country, Nigeria, should be the priority of all Nigerians, not winning elections at all costs. It is a very disheartening commentary on our politics that some of our politicians are thinking of strategy and strategy to win elections, even if they lose the country in the end.”
He opined that there should be no desperation to use sophistry to win an election and lose the only country Nigerians have, observing that presently, the level of distrust and suspicion between the Muslims and non-Muslims, in Nigeria, has become very high as to make it implausible, unrealistic and unwise for any political party and presidential candidate to field a same-faith presidential joint ticket.
He emphasized, “Allah (S.W.T) has forbidden any form of injustice for Himself, and has also forbidden it for His servants. Hence, our politicians should, at all times, make concerted efforts to be just to all groups of people with a view to defending the unity of our dear country, Nigeria. For a political party to have Muslims as its National Chairman, Presidential candidate and Vice-Presidential candidate, such a party is indeed not in a position to say it promotes and defends the spirit of justice, fairness and equity.” https://dailypost.ng/2022/07/04/2023-islamic-cleric-warns-against-same-faith-presidential-ticket/

festacman: Most Brazilian players come to Europe largely to play to make money. Having won a couple of Premiership titles without the prospect of significant pay rise in Man City, Gabriel Jesus needed to make a move for good money. His 2nd fiddle striker role in Man City devalued his his reputation as a world class striker and so didn't have suitors among the top UCL-playing clubs. Thus, he wisely settled for Arsenal even with their Europa League for hefty wages.

Continental Football governing body, CAF, have postponed the Africa Cup of Nations originally scheduled for June 2023 to January 2024, six months later than scheduled. President, Patrice Motsepe made the disclosure on Sunday at a CAF meeting in Morocco – a decision that may spark controversy due to players’ club committment at the time it kicks off on the new date. The finals were billed for Ivory Coast, which remains as host, but concerns over the weather in West Africa led to the change. We took a lot of advice and we decided we cannot take a risk,” Motsepe told a news conference. “We don’t want to run the risk of that our top competition is going to be washed out. January is not the best time because the European clubs do not want to release their players but we have no choice.” Motsepe further qualifying matches scheduled for September would now be postponed and it will create room of Africa’s representative at this year’s World Cup to organize tougher friendlies for better preparations. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/07/2023-nations-cup-gets-new-kick-off-date-due-to-weather-concerns/ |
