The New Nigeria People’s Party in Bauchi State has suspended its acting Chairman in the state, Alhaji Sani Shehu, popularly known as Sanin Malam.

His suspension which was for “gross indiscipline and disrespect to the leadership of the party”, was contained in a letter dated July 13th, 2022 and addressed to him.

The North-East Zonal Secretary of the NNPP, Babayo Liman, who signed the letter and read it to journalists during a press conference held at the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bauchi State Council, on Wednesday, warned Shehu to stop parading himself as the acting chairman pending investigations of the allegations against him.

The letter read, “Your actions for not collecting the query issued to you on July 6th, 2022, have been categorized as gross indiscipline and disrespect to the leadership of the party.

You are, by this letter, suspended from parading yourself as the acting Chairman of the party in Bauchi State pending the outcome of the National Executive Council decision in respect of the allegations leveled against you.”

The letter added that suspension would be communicated to relevant authorities for their information and further necessary action, “as a caretaker Chairman will soon be announced to carry on the activities of the NNPP Office in Bauchi State.”

Liman also read to journalists, the query written to the suspended acting Chairman which he claimed, Shehu refused to collect.

He said that sometime in June 2022, in the presence of the public, the Zonal National Chairman and Zonal National Secretary North East, Shehu challenged and insulted the National Board of Trustee Secretary General, Engr. Buba. Galadima, in Abuja without any reason.

He added that during the Bauchi State NNPP stakeholders meeting with the National Executive, in Abuja, he repeatedly insulted Galadima which resulted in his argument with the National Leader and presidential candidate of our great party Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“You did not apologize for your actions, even when you were advised to resign based on your attitudes until the National Chairman of the party apologized on your behalf.

“That you also repeated the challenge and insulted this time around to the Coordinator of the screening committee in the person of Dr. Yusuf Kofan Mata during another meeting with the National Leader Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso which also resulted in another argument between you and the National leader.

“That unconfirmed report revealed to the Zonal Headquarters that you constituted a committee in collaboration with some candidates to visit all the 20 LGA of Bauchi State with the aims of changing some candidate and LGA Executives in the state without permission.

“That another information also revealed to the Zonal Headquarters that you are collecting money from stakeholders and NNPP candidates in the state for renting an office as well as for organizing a meeting in the State. And from the information received by this Office, since you assumed office you didn’t conduct any meeting except once when the National leader questioned you for not conducting executives meeting in the state and the venue of the meeting and NNPP State office was a donation by the Zonal National Secretary Dr. Babayo Liman, in Bauchi State.

“That unconfirmed report also revealed to the Zonal Headquarters that you are making arrangements with some opposition parties in the State to carry on anti-party which is against the NNPP,”

The letter directed Shehu to “write a letter of apology to the National Leader Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Engr. Buba Galadima, the National Chairman and all National Executives through the National Zonal Headquarters North-East within 48 hours of the receipt of this query in the alternative why not disciplinary actions shouldn’t be taken against you.”

TINUBU-SHETTIMA TICKET: ADDRESS THE CANDIDATE, NOT HIS CREED – MURIC

The Christian Association of Nigeria has threatened to escalate the situation in the country over the choice of a Muslim running mate by the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It will be recalled that the APC torch bearer picked former governor of Borno State, Senator Kashim Shettima, as his vice presidential candidate.



But in a swift reaction, an Islamic human rights advocacy group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has accused CAN of heating up the polity with its comment on Tinubu’s choice of a running mate. MURIC wants CAN to address the candidate, not his creed.



MURIC’s response was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, 12th July, 2022, by the group’s director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.



The group said:



“The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has come again. As usual, Muslim candidates for the 2023 presidential election are its targets. This time around it is Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his running mate. Tinubu is under CAN’s hammer for picking a Muslim, Senator Kashim Shettima, as his vice presidential candidate and Rev. John Hayab of Kaduna state chapter of the organization is the axe man for CAN.



“We are not surprised by CAN’s verbal halitosis over Tinubu’s choice. The Christian umbrella body is just staying in character. It is always out to oppose any Muslim in power or any Muslim seeking office. That is because CAN will never be satisfied with a Muslim as president of Nigeria. It will not suit its agenda of Nigeria for Christ.



“CAN is simply hungry for power. We know CAN. The group has been canvassing for a Christian running mate not for the benefit of Nigerians but for parochial ends. The idea is to milk the Christian vice presidential candidate if his party wins in the end by claiming that the Christian umbrella body fought for him. It is for political influence, for contracts and for power. We advise CAN to form its own political party.



“Democracy is a game of numbers and every candidate should be allowed to make a free choice. It is not written in the constitution that a candidate must not pick a running mate from his own religious group. Every candidate’s choice is at his own peril. So what’s the big deal? What is CAN afraid of? Its own shadow, of course.



“Nigerians should not allow themselves to be deceived by CAN’s spiritual banditry. We should be looking at a candidate’s pedigree, his integrity and competence. By the same token, a presidential candidate should look for a running mate who has electoral value as well as the relevant experience. CAN’s insistence on Muslim-Christian ticket is motivated by articulated religiousity and tramadolised spirituality. Candidates should not be assessed by their religion.



“CAN talks about fairness and balancing at the national level but ignores the gross lopsidedness in the Christian-Christian regimes of the whole South. Is CAN unaware that all but one of the 17 states in Southern Nigeria have Christian governors? That is 94% for Christians and just 6% for Muslims.



“There are only three (3) Muslim deputy governors in the whole Southern Nigeria (Lagos, Ogun and Oyo) as against fourteen (14) Christian deputy governors. That is 82% for Christians and 18% for Muslims. Ekiti and Ondo states with substantive Muslim population have Christian governors and Christian deputies. This life is give and take. The world goes round by giving and sharing. But why does CAN want to share by force when it is not prepared to give?



“Nigeria has 36 states. Of these, Christian governors are 20 while Muslim governors are just 16. That is 56% for Christians and a paltry 44% for Muslims. Yet CAN is not satisfied and the organisation will always cry ‘marginalisation’ when in actual fact it is taking all the milk and honey in the land. We are waiting for CAN to deny this 20 by 16 computation. But CAN cannot. It dares not because the facts are there, and facts are sacred. Are United States’ senators listening? Is Kukah still there?



“There are 22 Christian deputy governors in Nigeria as against 14 Muslim deputy governors. Mathematicians should put that together and work out the percentage. That is 61% for Christians and just 39% for Muslims. So what is CAN talking about?



“CAN’s charity does not begin at home. That is why it is making so much noise about a Muslim-Muslim ticket at the centre? CAN is not ready to share in the states but it wants to force sharing down our throats at the centre. Is that not double standard? Must CAN take everything?



“Can is simply hungry for power and it is always seeking ways to railroad everyone to have its own way. Bulldozing, blackmailing, harassment and intimidation are CAN’s stock in trade. But the same intimidating CAN is now the one accusing Tinubu of intimidating the Christian group and threatening to escalate the situation.



“Hear Rev. “We are of the opinion that we do not have to sound like bandits before we can make our points, and that is if there is any pointable point at all. Unfortunately CAN is not making any point here. All we see here is a threat. This is too pedestrian. It is jejune. What kind of ‘escalation’ is CAN threatening? We warn that nothing must happen to Tinubu. Shettima must not disappear.



“We warn CAN to leave Tinubu alone. MURIC will respond phrase for phrase and innuendo for innuendo whenever CAN attacks Tinubu or Shettima based on their religion. However, we have no business with references to their party or other official issues. We have no scintilla of doubt that both Tinubu and his running mate, including their political party, have competent officials capable of giving adequate response to political mudslings.



“CAN should stop all references to the religion of Tinubu. Islam is not contesting, Tinubu is. CAN should look beyond religion and focus on Tinubu’s pedigree. The Christian umbrella body will have MURIC to reckon with each time it throws dirt on Tinubu’s religion. Stop heating the polity. Address the candidate, not his creed.”

Terrorists are demanding a N100m ransom for each of the 43 abducted Kaduna train passengers, who are still in their custody, The PUNCH has learnt.

The demand was communicated to the families of the hostages last week.

This is coming five days after the alleged masterminds of the abduction were freed from the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abuja, by scores of armed men on Tuesday.

During the attack, over 300 Boko Haram fighters, convicted criminals and other inmates were released by the terrorists who overwhelmed the security operatives guarding the facility.

The Federal Government on Thursday uploaded to the Interpol database the data of 64 Boko Haram commanders who escaped from custody during the attack.

The PUNCH had reported that the terrorists attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train on March 28, killing eight and kidnapping no fewer than 61 passengers.

As part of their demands, they requested the release of 15 terrorist commanders, their children detained by the military and an undisclosed amount of cash.

On June 12, the terrorists released 11 hostages after 75 days in captivity, while another seven regained their freedom on Saturday.

The victims were reportedly released through the assistance of the Publisher of Kaduna-based Desert Herald newspaper, Mallam Tukur Mamu, who has been negotiating with the militants.

Giving an update on the situation on Sunday, a family member of the abducted victims, who didn’t want his name in print, told one of our correspondents that the terrorists were asking each family to cough up N100m ransom for the release of their loved ones.

The source said the seven victims that were released on Saturday paid an undisclosed amount.

He said, “It is money that is still delaying the release of the others. The terrorists are demanding ransom now. We heard the last set paid money. They (terrorists) have reached out to us as regards the payment of ransom.

“The situation now is that if you have your money, your loved ones would be freed. They have pegged the ransom at N100m. It is just unfortunate.”



The Islamic State West Africa Province claimed responsibility for the attack in a viral video 24 hours later.

Another family member said they were told that the terrorists were no longer interested in negotiating with the Federal Government, saying that N100m was required to free those in captivity.

He said they were still pleading with the terrorists to reduce the ransom as some of them could not afford the huge amount.

He noted, “My loved one has not been released, those that were released paid N100m. I don’t have that kind of money. The kidnappers got in touch with us. They said they were no longer negotiating with the Federal Government. Getting N100m is the dilemma many of us don’t have.”

Meanwhile, the seven persons released by the terrorists have reunited with their families on Saturday evening.

They include Bosede Olurotimi, Abubakar Zubairu, Alhassan Sule, Sadiq Abdullahi, Muhammad Paki, Aliyu Usman as well as a Pakistani, Dr. Muhammad Afzal.

A victim, Sadique, who is the son of former Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, broke down in tears while thanking God for regaining his freedom.

“The soldiers were considerate enough to hand us over to Tukur Mamu, the lead negotiator after we insisted that we will not go with them. The most difficult job has been done by him. Alhamdulillah(Praise be to God).

We were all taken to his office and even before then, he has contacted all our family members to come and pick us up. I can confirm to you that this man did this thing alone because even our family members were taken by surprise. They least expected the rescue soon, more so, that today (Saturday) is Sallah day,”  Sadiq added.

He urged the Federal Government to hasten efforts to ensure that the remaining 43  passengers were released as soon as possible “because of their deteriorating health condition.”

When asked if the terrorists were demanding  N100m, the negotiator, Manu, told The PUNCH that the government was in a better position to answer that(question) as all the terrorists wanted as their demands had to be forwarded to the government.

Mamu said, “I sent the list to the government but honestly, there was nothing that was done. It was as a result of that that they (terrorists) threatened this attack (on Kuje prison) and eventually they succeeded in rescuing dozens of them(terrorists)  instead of only 10.

“I think the government should explain that because it has been communicated to the government.”

Mamu commended the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni over what he described as his “behind the scene role” in the release of the seven hostages.

He said, “Sincerely, I have so much respect for Governor Buni. From the information I have, there is no single Yobe citizen left in that forest but that governor demonstrated an uncommon concern on this issue.

“He has been in touch with me throughout, monitoring development and even reaching out to those concerned whenever there is a need to do so.

“He gave lots of support. This is a governor from the North-East far from the North-West where we have this crisis. He told me not to publicise his efforts but I had to.”

The Spokesman, Department of State Service, Dr Peter Afunanya, declined comment on the terrorists’ demand when contacted on the phone.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, simply said he was not aware of the negotiations with the kidnappers.

The leader of the victims’ families, Dr Abdulfatai Jimoh,  told one of our correspondents that after the release of the seven hostages on Saturday, 43 more hostages were still in the terrorists’ den.

But a security consultant, Mr Chidi Omeje, said the nation is in a messy situation, noting that the ransom would further empower the terrorists to further their criminal enterprise.

Another analyst, Jackson Ojo queried what he described as the government’s lackadaisical attitude to security issues, wondering why the security agencies cannot track down the hoodlums who are in constant communication with Mamu.

“It is unfortunate that we are in a country where miscreants called terrorists to dictate to our government. The maximum number of these terrorists cannot be more than a hundred thousand; so why will this little number dictate to a government that governs over 200 million people?” he asked.

The Elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has backed the decision of the Presidential candidate of All Progressive Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmad Tinubu on the choice of Kashim Shettima (another Muslim) saying the Muslim-Muslim ticket can win election.
Yakasai made this known on Sunday while reacting to the political development in the country.

He described the decision as a right decision and well calculated.


According to him, “We have had it before, MKO Abiola and Kingibe, and they won the election. It’s just that the military canceled the election, but they won. Muslim-Muslim ticket can win election in Nigeria.

“Do you think it will be right for Tinubu, a Muslim who is a minority in the South to pick a Christian who are minority in the north as his running mate and you expect him to win the election? You cannot,” Yakasai.
The elder statesman however allays fear nursed by some nigerians that the Muslim-Muslim ticket is threat to the collective well being and unity of Nigeria.

Recall that Tinubu had on Sunday announced Shettima, former Governor of Borno State to replace Ibrahim Masari as his running mate ahead of the 2023 general election.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), Saturday in Daura, Katsina State, urged Nigerians to report suspicious activities and individuals to security agencies to stall terrorist attacks.

This was as he said the increased disclosure of unusual activities would expose bandits and terrorists, nudging the security apparatus to eliminate threats across the country.

“The people know them. So, let them report them to the security agencies,” he said.

He also advised those unleashing mayhem on innocent citizens to reflect on their atrocities, knowing that they soiled their own name and their family reputation.


According to a statement on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari said this while speaking to journalists after the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at his country home.

The statement is titled ‘Security is a collective responsibility, citizens have a role for disclosure, says President Buhari.’

He said, “We are praying that the rainy season will be good for production of the food we eat in the country.


Look at when we closed the borders for about two years, a lot of people went back to the farms and they have not regretted that decision. Now, we are feeding ourselves and exporting rice.

“My advice is that people that are organising themselves and attacking institutions and communities. The people know them. So, let them report them to the security agencies. I hope they will sit and reflect and make sure they save their names and their families.”

On his part, the Emir of Daura, Dr Faruk Faruk, said the President had represented the Daura Emirate and indigenes well in his service to the nation, upholding his integrity at all times and working for the collective good of all.

“He has done well to ensure peace and turnaround of the economy, and all that is within his capacity to promote safety in Nigeria. He remains a man of integrity and we are proud of his achievements.

“For more than seven years, he has been working for the good of the country. We pray that God will surround him with people that will help him,” he said.

The Emir said the community had always been proud of the President, knowing his penchant for fairness, justice and upholding the rule of law.

“No one can accuse him of theft or any form of corruption. We, the people of Daura, are behind you, Mr President. The work you have done for the community and the country, it is only God that will reward you,” he added.
