The Ogun State government has noted that the contractors handling the repair of the Long Bridge axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are slow.

The PUNCH reports that the gridlock caused by the repairs on the Long Bridge has caused misery for motorists, as the spot has also attracted miscreants who rob commuters at odd hours.

Speaking to our correspondent via phone on Monday, the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Kunle Somorin, sympathised with motorists, noting that the Federal Government had been contacted concerning the repairs.

He noted that the state government has reached the Federal Ministry of Work to hasten the repair process.

Somorin said, “We’re at work on it. We’ve made representation to the Federal Ministry of Works to ensure that something is done fast about that, because we understand that it was caused by potholes that the contractors are battling with.

“But we feel that they’re too slow and something serious should be done about it immediately.

“We sympathise with the motorists and the commuters there. We’re not leaving them to their devices.”

According to him, the state government was assisting by deploying traffic personnel to the site.

“We have even offered to give them our personnel to assist; to provide security for 24 hours service so that the road could be fixed. That’s what we’ve done.

“But it’s a federal road and we cannot take over management of that road. We can take care of the traffic situation but the diversion the contractors need is unrealistic,” Somorin said.

Somorin also showed optimism on the response of the FG, stating that the road will be fixed “in no time.”

“Our traffic management agency operatives are there. The solution to it is for the contractors to fix the road.

“We’ve made representations to them and we’re sure that in no time, something will be done,” the governor’s aide said.

Daniel Bwala, spokesperson of the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign organisation, has made a blunder regarding the chances of his principal winning the election in 2023.

Speaking during Channels TVs Sunday Politics programme, he said only Labour Party will be able to compete with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bwala joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the APC weeks ago and got appointed to the Atiku Presidential campaign organisation.

In response to a question on whether PDP should be jittery going into the election with APC, he said only Labour Party should have such fears.

The lawyer accidentally said that PDP knows that it stands no chance of winning the presidential election, but when he realised his error, he quickly corrected himself and mentioned APC.

The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, on Monday said no Nigerian will ever accept the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its chief drivers after it has inflicted the country with hardship.

The opposition party scribe alleged that the APC and its leadership are using maximum force on Nigerians in a bid to compel them to have sympathy for them.

According to a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Ikenna Onuoha, Anyanwu called on government security agencies in the country to stop abusing the rights of the citizens in the cause of carrying out their duties.

He regrets that instead of ensuring peace and tranquillity, some security operatives go about subjecting harmless Nigerians to undue labour, maltreatment, and pains.

Anyanwu states that such act is a clear violation of people’s constitutional rights, and called on human rights defenders to urgently intervene.

The PDP National Secretary further advised them to always apply caution in their dealings with the public, maintaining that their relationship with the people can go a long way to redeem Nigeria’s image.

Anyanwu, therefore, appealed to security operatives still in the habit of oppressing Nigerians especially, the youths to desist, warning that such act if not cushioned is capable of brewing another crisis and triggering youth restiveness in the country

One of the consultants hired by the states and local governments to ensure the recovery of excess deductions related to the Paris Club debt, on Saturday, alleged that the Nigerian Governors’ Forum demanded and received a total of $100m for elections in Ekiti, Ondo and Bauchi states.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Lead Consultant, Linas International Limited, Ned Nwoko, alleged that after submitting $300m bill as consultancy fees, the state governors demanded 50 per cent of the amount and allegedly threatened to “frustrate” the payment if the consultants did not play ball.

Nwoko further revealed that a former chairman of the NGF demanded the 50 per cent payment for elections in the three states.

He, however, stated that $100m was eventually paid to the governors after an intervention by the Federal Ministry of Justice.

He added that the amount owed Linas International was $68m and not $418m touted publicly.

Nwoko further distanced his company from the $418m, which he termed as a miscalculation.

He also backed the Attorney-General of the Federation’s claim that the governors had indemnified the payment as he was only working to ensure compliance with the law.

According to him, the governors diverted refunds meant for their local governments except five states namely; Delta, Bauchi, Kwara, Benue, Ondo and the Federal Capital Territory.

The lead consultant also accused the current Chairman of the NGF, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, of telling “a litany of lies” over payment to the consultants.

He said, “I am compelled to embark on this public engagement to debunk the litany of lies, spin and false narratives that have been dished out to abuse the minds of the undiscerning public by the Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Governor Kayode Fayemi, against the payment of consultancy fees legitimately earned and owed my firm for services rendered and which the states and local governments have fully been refunded.

“The outstanding fees owed my firm with regards to the last work done for the states is approximately $68m and not $418m as maliciously sought to be conveyed by Fayemi and co. Our original claims calculated based on agreed terms were well in excess of $300m. We offered a huge discount on the entitlement to accept the $68m.”

Going down memory lane to the former President Olusegun Obasanjo administration, the businessman outlined his involvement in securing refunds for states and local governments, including Adamawa and Taraba states

Nwoko said he advised Obasanjo to opt out of the Paris Club and halt deductions from states’ allocations.

“It is to the eternal credit of former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the Federal Government halted the excess charges and over deductions as well as began refunding identified over deductions and excess charges. Yar’Adua did and President Jonathan did as well,” he explained.

The Linas boss, who said he had recovered $3.1bn for local government councils, which hired him, noted that the NGF brought him onboard to extend his services to state governments.

This decision, he said, was predicated on his success with the local councils, prompting the Federal Government to agree to the commencement of refunds in 2016.

He stated, “The Federal Government in the refunds paid money into accounts provided by the state governors for the receipt of the refunds accruable to the states. The governors also provided accounts to receive the refunds accruable to the local governments.

“In the first tranche of refunds to states and local governments, the Federal Government wrongly paid the consultancy fee to the NGF. The consultancy fee paid to the Nigerian Governors’ Forum was $86.5m and N19.4bn.

“While we were labouring to secure the refunds for the benefit of state and local governments, Governor Yari Abubakar developed a parallel scheme to misappropriate the consultancy fees. As recently as 2016, the NGF in a letter to the Accountant-General of the Federation dated June 22, 2016, claimed it appointed a consultant.

“During an altercation on one occasion during the several meetings with Governor Yari Abubakar, I confronted him about the unconscionable quest to appropriate the $86.5m and N19.4bn. He claimed it was not for his personal use, but was needed for the purposes of the Bauchi, Ekiti and Ondo elections.

“Additionally, it should be recalled how some of these monies found their way to some of the leadership of the National Assembly at the time. The EFCC was able to clamp down and recover some of the money funnelled away by the NGF.

“Most of these frauds are still subject of investigation as well as civil and criminal litigation, including our action against the NGF and the Federal Government in suit no. FHC/ABJ/CS/148/2017. It is important to state that the various state governments issued written instructions to the Federal Ministry of Finance authorising it to deduct at source and pay to the NGF five per cent of the sum due each state as legal fees.”

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, while briefing State House correspondents on Thursday, August 11, declared that the governors originally created the liability whose payment they also indemnified.

But at the last NGF meeting at the State House Banquet Hall on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, Fayemi argued that the governors provided no indemnity.

He also claimed that the AGF was insistent on paying the consultants for self-serving purposes, adding that the matter was sub judice, a claim Nwoko debunked on Saturday.

According to him, the agreements and judgment being executed had been reached before the current regime.

Kalvin Phillips and Cole Palmer are ready to face Newcastle United on Sunday, says Pep Guardiola.

Both players were absent from last week's 4-0 win over Bournemouth with minor injuries sustained in training earlier that week.

Convoy of wife of Osun State governor, Mrs Kafayat Oyetola, was reportedly attacked by suspected hoodlums Friday evening.

Though information about the incident was still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, sources in Owode, Ede, where the incident occurred said the convoy of Mrs Oyetola was heading to Osogbo and was around Owode market when intermittent gunshots were heard around 8:pm on Friday.

A resident of the area, who preferred to be simply identified as Alayande, told our correspondent on Saturday that a truck had created obstruction of traffic when the convoy arrived Owode market junction.

“It was while trying to make the truck driver to move that altercation ensued between security men attached to the convoy.

“I heard several gunshots where I stood near the junction. It was dark but there was altercation between security men and some people suspected to be hoodlums,” he said.

Osun police command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, has not responded to text message sent to her on the matter as of the time of filing this report.

But Information Officer to the office of the First Lady, Oluwatunmise Iluyomade, said the convoy was attacked.

She said “No life was lost in the incident. Some security personnel attached to the convoy sustained various degrees of injuries.”

When you have a government that has performed poorly, you just don’t bring anybody and expect to win. The opposition also has a duty to field a credible candidate.

APC has no business winning the 2023 election but they will win partly because the opposition candidates are poor!!!!!!

In fact not just poor in terms of track record but poor to the extent that they ran together and lost and decided the best way to win is to run separately and split their votes!

If you can’t even show strategic thinking in your campaign how are you going to run the mess that is going to be handed to you in 2023 if you win?
