Lead negotiator and media consultant to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, Malam Tukur Mamu has singlehandedly secured the release of 7 more kidnapped train passengers. Mamu who had last week, announced his formal withdrawal from negotiating with the terrorists due to alleged government lackadaisical attitude, said he had to backtrack because of immense pressure and appeal by the relations and loved ones of the victims. Those that were released on Saturday were Bosede Olurotimi, Abubakar Zubairu, Alhassan Sule and Sadiq Ango Abdullahi. Other passengers released were Muhammad Daiyabu Paki, Aliyu Usman and a foreign national of Pakistani origin, Dr. Muhammad Abuzar Afzal. Tukur Mamu who had earlier negotiated the release of 11 of the victims, confirmed the release of 7 of the victims to journalists in Kaduna ,saying the “success of Saturday’s historic release has vindicated Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Gumi about what the power of mediation can achieve.” Those that were released on Saturday were Bosede Olurotimi, Abubakar Zubairu, Alhassan Sule and Sadiq Ango Abdullahi. Tukur Mamu who had earlier negotiated the release of 11 of the victims, confirmed the release of 7 of the victims to journalists in Kaduna ,saying the “success of Saturday’s historic release has vindicated Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Gumi about what the power of mediation can achieve.” According to him, “I want to assure the nation that everything that was achieved today was singlehandedly initiated and arranged by me with the full support and prayers of my principal, Sheikh Gumi. That is why I keep emphasising that government has the power to end the agony of this innocent victims in one day. This is just one individual that sacrifices his life and even integrity. There is no military solution to the current security debacle in Nigeria. When you sincerely engage them this guys even though wicked with misguided religious beliefs, they are listening.” "I have sufficient evidence to prove that they do listen. It is this power of engagement and sincerity that resulted to the release of this 7 victims.” “In whatever I do I don’t need or require any reward from anybody but from Allah but I hope the nation we sacrificed our lives for will recognize us.” The 7 rescued victims have been handed over to the military and are now on their way to Kaduna.I thank the Kaduna military GOC for the support he gave during the rescue mission.” “The location they (abductors) gave is remote, sensitive and risky. There was a military checkpoint before penetrating the forest. My team was stopped by the soldiers but when they told the military our mission they contacted the GCO and he immediately gave approval for them to proceed. And after the victims were successfully evacuated, travelling through over 40 kilometers in the forest, they were given a military escort back to Kaduna at the checkpoint”. The 7 rescued victims are in the best position to confirm …… Money cannot achieve what I have done today. And I will never involve myself on any issue that has to do with money. I am also under serious watch. I am sure if they have evidence against me I cannot be talking freely the manner I used to do.” ” However, this is no time for blame game. We must come together as a nation to confront our challenges. I pray and hope that government will learn a lot of lessons in the development of today. We thank Allah that He uses us to make many happy”. “I’m pleading with the families of the remaining victims to actively engage government to secure the release of their loved ones. I will not be involved in such a risky mission again,” he said. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/07/abducted-train-passengers-gumis-aide-tukur-mamu-secures-release-of-7-more-hostages/ |

The Northern Elders Forum on Wednesday raised fears that ethnicity and greed were threatening to frustrate the emergence of a country with the capacity to turn around its fortunes in 2023. The organisation expressed concern over developments in many aspects of Nigerian politics as they relate to preparations for the 2023 elections and beyond, the organisation. A statement by the NEF Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, in Abuja accused politicians of “desperately shepherding Nigerians into two irreconcilable religious divides, all in a bid to garner undeserved advantages at the expense of religious tolerance and coexistence.” He said, “These developments threaten our already distressed democratic process. Our politics now operates outside safe and tolerable boundaries, and the nation will pay dearly for the desperation and limitations of those who ought to show leadership and responsibility among our politicians. “It is not responsible to resist the urge to caution politicians only on the ground that many matters that will impact on our lives and the quality of our national existence are purely internal affairs of political parties. “The search for a running mate for the APC’s presidential candidate with religious faith of two individuals as the sole issue at stake represents a sad reminder that our politicians will not allow our democratic system to grow beyond the narrowest of confinements. “Nigerians take their faith seriously, but we are also painfully aware that the faith of our leaders has never been a factor in the manner we are governed. The political maneuvers in the APC now divert attention from serious issues around the quality of governance, and point to the danger that we are a multi-religious country whose citizens will pay dearly if one politician is not a Christian or Muslim. “The melodrama around selection of the PDP’s presidential candidate’s running mate, and the role of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike will remain constant reminders that power and wealth, irrespective of how they are acquired, have made our political process its hostage. “The ransom that will be paid to free our democratic process may be such that the nation cannot afford it. Our nation is being carved into strongholds controlled by powerful individual politicians who must be placated at all cost, and we will pay a huge price if these politicians succeed in stamping their personalities into the democratic process. “Among a handful of other parties with the potential to make a difference, ethnicity and greed are threatening to frustrate the emergence of a nation with the capacity to turn around its fortunes in 2023. “Instead of exploring options and opportunities that will improve their chances of giving Nigerians real and credible, we only witness frightening levels of hostility and ethnic chauvinism, as we saw recently in exchanges between Labour Party and NNPP leaders. Ethnic identity in particular looks capable of being elevated to a point where it alone can cripple a successful transition to 2023 and beyond. “Our politics has become an additional burden on the Nigerian citizen, even dwarfing the spreading insecurity, poverty and cynicism over the prospects of our survival as one one nation. If the way our politicians are seeking power is any indicator for the quality of leadership they will provide, then the nation has a very genuine reason to worry over its future. Other leaders representing particular interests compound our worries with periodic threats and ultimatums that an already weakened leadership has no solution for. “The prospects for safe conduct of electoral activities and a free and fair election are being threatened by the conduct of our politicians. We must find the resolve and the strength to step back and pull the nation away from its current precarious position. What is at stake is more than an election. It is the survival of our country.” https://punchng.com/politicians-dividing-nigeria-with-ethnicity-northern-elders-forum/ |

The United States Embassy has warned its citizens in Nigeria against travelling on the airport road in Abuja. The warning came after suspected terrorists attacked Kuje prison and freed inmates on Tuesday. Also, United Kingdom citizens were warned not to be cautious of travelling to 19 states in Nigeria. Among the states are Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara and riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River. They were advised to only embark on essential travel to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa , Niger, Sokoto, Kogi, within 20km of the border with Niger in Kebbi State, Abia and non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Plateau, and Taraba. In a statement on Wednesday, titled, ‘Abuja FCT prison break near the airport on July 5, 2022’, the US Embassy noted that crime has become endemic throughout Nigeria. The statement read, “On the night of July 5, 2022, an attack on Kuje Prison freed a large portion of the estimated 1,000 prisoners. The prison lies approximately 27 miles southwest of the Central Business District. An increase in crime is expected in and around Abuja. It is recommended that U.S. citizens should maintain a high state of personal security awareness for the next two weeks and avoid unnecessary travel on the airport road. “Crime is endemic throughout Nigeria and tends to spike after dark. Avoiding locations and situations that increase the likelihood of being victimized is the best defence. Avoid displays of valuables and limit nighttime activity. “Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack –including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to target crowds more effectively. Frequently, their aim is focused on unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as: “High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.), hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists, places of worship, schools, parks, shopping malls and markets and public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights). “Actions to take: Be aware of your surroundings, Keep a low profile, carry proper identification, monitor local media for updates, review your personal security plans, always drive with your windows rolled up and the doors locked, and avoid large gatherings and protests, review alternative travel routes in case of unexpected protests or unrest, exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests, always keep the doors to your residence locked, even when at home.” https://punchng.com/just-in-uk-us-warn-residents-against-travel-near-kuje-prison-19-states/ |

…families rally in Kaduna, say government failed to seek release of remaining 50 hostages The terrorists that attacked the Abuja-Kaduna bound AK9 train on March 28 have handed down a fresh threat to commence the killing of the remaining 50 hostages within 24 hours. The threat followed an alleged failure of the Federal Government to seek the release of the remaining hostages, The PUNCH reports. This was just as relatives and friends of the hostages held a peaceful rally in Kaduna, Wednesday, to demand the release of the remaining 50 hostages. Meanwhile, the fresh threat to commence the killing of the hostages was contained in an audio which went viral where one of the terrorists threatened “to slaughter the victims because the government failed to seek for their release.” Mallam Tukur Mamu, who is also one of the negotiators and Media Consultant to controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, confirmed the authenticity of the audio to newsmen in Kaduna. He said the terrorists fixed Wednesday to carry out the threat as according to them, they were provoked by the government on Monday. Mamu, who is also the Publisher of Kaduna-based Desert Herald newspaper, said on hearing of the threat, he cried and pleaded with the terror group to instead reach out to the families since there was a delay from the government. He said, “The terrorists fixed Wednesday to carry out the threat because they were provoked on Monday after giving us another opportunity. “I was crying and pleading with them that since there is a delay from the government, they should discuss with the family members directly to negotiate the victims’ release. “Based on the plea, they agreed to negotiate directly with the victims’ families. But they said they are giving us till Wednesday that if there was nothing concrete from those that are interested in the negotiation, they will start slaughtering some of the victims.” Saying that the hostages had spent 100 days in captivity, relatives and friends of the victim, demanded the immediate release of the remaining 50 hostages. As early as 7:30 am, the protesters assembled at the Nagwamaste House along Ali Akilu road in the heart of the city, and by 8.00 am, the protesters stormed the major streets in the metropolis, chanting, “Release our loved ones!” The leader of the forum, Dr. Abdulfatai Jimoh, while addressing journalists, said it was exactly 100 days since their loved ones were attacked and abducted in a “journey of two hours.” He appealed to the Federal Government to do all that was necessary to rescue the remaining hostages from the terrorists’ den, noting that “we know it’s possible. They can do it, they should do it please.” Jimoh said, “Today is exactly 100 days since our loved ones were abducted, it was meant to be a journey of two hours, however, it turned out to be 100 harrowing days. Since then, things have not been the same with us. “One can not imagine what our loved ones are going through in these last 100 days in the deep forest- the same clothes, no clean water to drink, no medical care. Many of them are sick, one has even been shot and injured, and we don’t know his condition now. “We have been talking to the government we have been appealing to them in the last 100 days to rescue our loved ones, but so far we have not seen much. “It is very disappointing. We are appealing again to the government to do all that is necessary to bring out our loved ones in the shortest time possible. “If you remember, our loved ones spent their Easter in the bush, the Eid Fitr in the bush. Today, we are just three days away from Eid Kabir. We are praying they will spend the Eid Kabir with us. This is our hope and prayer.” He added, “We want the government to do all that is necessary. We know it is possible. They can do it, they should do it, please. “It is a responsibility they owe us as Nigerian citizens. We are citizens of our country. We should be free to move everywhere. We should be protected. “We have surrendered our sovereignty. We have surrendered our security to the government and it is incumbent on them to do what is necessary to protect us. Our loved ones are in captivity for 100 days now. We are appealing to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and his Security Chiefs to do what is necessary within their powers. “We know they can do it and should do it for us please in the name of God. “We are all vulnerable to this situation. We are expecting them in the next few hours by the special grace of God not even days. We know they are on it, they should conclude it.” https://punchng.com/updated-kaduna-families-protest-as-terrorists-issue-death-threats/ |
