With the series of attacks on the IMO State workers yesterday, Nigeria electricity regulatory commission disconnects power supply in IMO State yesterday Imo residents in blackout after attack on NLC President On Wednesday, November 1, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) directed all electricity workers to put a stop to all electricity services after Joe Ajaero, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President was brutalized in Imo state. A part of the NUEE letter read thus: “In response to the atrocious and inhumane behaviour meted out to our fellow comrades and the abduction of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress by the Imo State Governor and the Policemen of the Imo State Command today, Wednesday 1 November 2023, we will embark on a total shutdown of the Nation if the President of the NLC is not released and adequate explanation given by the Nigerian Government. “All National State and Chapter executives are requested to start the mobilization of our members in total compliance with this directive. Please note that withdrawal of Services nationwide commences from 0.00 hours of Thursday, November 2.2023. “We cannot be at work while the President of the NLC is incarcerated, and we cannot be at peace when the rights of the workers in Imo State are being trampled on with utmost impunity. The strength and integrity of our Union are at stake, please ensure total compliance.” Apparently, the directive was carried out in Imo state on Thursday, November 2, according to the letter signed by Dominic Igwebike, the Acting Secretary of the NUEE. This is the current situation even though the NLC president is being treated at the hospital. Backstory On Wednesday, November 1, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, was abducted by security agents. Ajaero and other NLC leaders, along with the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), were present at the State Secretariat in Owerri to kick off a planned protest for Thursday, November 2, and a potential strike due to various grievances against the Imo State government. These issues include unpaid salaries, outstanding allowances, and the state government’s alleged mistreatment of workers. Note that the Imo State government under Governor Hope Uzodinma has been accused of multiple offences, including failing to honour previous agreements, withholding salary payments, wrongfully labelling workers as ghost employees, destruction of the NLC state secretariat, discriminatory pay practices, and neglecting pensioners. Other allegations against the state government include non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage, harassment of trade union leaders, use of violence and intimidation, mismanagement of union funds, declaring pensioners as non-existent employees, and systematic intimidation of the workforce, as well as reluctance to engage in discussions. As of Thursday morning, November 2, there are reports that the NLC President, Joe Ajaero is currently hospitalized, fighting to save his right eye after the violent events that occurred on Wednesday, November 1. https://nairametrics.com/2023/11/02/imo-residents-in-blackout-after-attack-on-nlc-president/

See the lies of the Nigeria police force here. It’s very unfortunate situation in Nigeria . I only prayed for the speedy recovery for the beaten NLC President Police: NLC President Not Arrested In Imo — We Rescued Him From Mob Attack The police command in Imo says its officers did not arrest Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in Owerri, the state capital. Earlier on Wednesday, Benson Upah, media head of the NLC, said Ajaero was picked up from the Imo council secretariat of the NLC by heavily armed police officers. “President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was picked up a few minutes ago from NLC state council secretariat by heavily armed policemen in Owerri and taken to an unknown destination,” Upah had said. Reacting to the development, Henry Okoye, spokesperson of the Imo police command, said the NLC president had a heated argument with some individuals who resisted the picketing of the airport in the state. Okoye said to prevent an attack on Ajaero, the police took the NLC president into protective custody at the state police headquarters. “Upon receiving this report, the Imo police command swiftly deployed police operatives to the scene where the officer in charge exercised his operational discretion by taking the NLC president into protective custody at the state command headquarters to ensure the protection of his life and that he was not lynched in the scuffle that followed,” the Imo police spokesperson said. “The commissioner of police thereafter directed that he should be taken to the Police Medical Services, Owerri, where he would be accorded medical attention as a result of the attack. “He was therefore accorded adequate security cover to proceed on his other legitimate engagements for the day. “It is however necessary to emphasize the existence of a court injunction from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria holden in Owerri with Suit No. NICN/OW/41/2023 dated 27th October, 2023, barring the NLC from holding the intended protest rally in Owerri. “The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Police Command, CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde, therefore urges all concerned parties to ensure compliance with the Court directives so as to avoid jeopardizing the current security arrangements on Owerri and other parts of Imo State, even as the State gears up for the forthcoming electioneering process on 11th November 2023.” On October 30, the NLC promised to ground activities in Imo from November 1, to protest the alleged violation of rights and privileges of workers. Ajaero had alleged that the Imo government has not paid some workers for 20 months. https://www.thecable.ng/police-nlc-president-not-arrested-in-imo-we-rescued-him-from-mob-attack/amp

NLC: I Was Beaten, God Must’ve Taken Time To Create Me – Ajaero Narrates Ordeal The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero has narrated his ordeal in police custody after he was arrested in Owerri, Imo State. Ajaero said God must have taken extra time to create him due to the beating he received while in police custody. Recall that some miscreants disrupted the NLC’s protest in Owerri, the Imo State capital. The NLC president was in Owerri to mobilize Imo workers for a mega protest rally in the state over an alleged violation and abuse of rights and privileges of workers by the state government. The violence that broke out during the rally led to men of the Nigeria Police Force whisking away Ajaero. Speaking after he was released, Ajaero said the police threatened to drag him to court. According to Ajaero: “If you say interim order, it elapses with time; if the court issues another one, then it’s a different thing. I told them interim order ends within one week or two; they now kept the letter and told me they can prosecute me. “I told them it’s the same court that can institute a contempt charge; you just can’t start prosecuting me. “They beat me; God must have taken extra time to create me because of the kind of beating I received.” https://.ng/2023/11/02/nlc-i-was-beaten-god-mustve-taken-time-to-create-me-ajaero-narrates-ordeal-in-police-custody/

Ajaero To Be Flown Abroad For Medical Care – NLC by chokekachy: 2:50pm The president of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, is to be flown abroad for medical treatment for the injuries he sustained during a scuffle in Imo state. The NLC president was in Owerri on Wednesday, November 1, to mobilize Imo workers for a protest rally in the state over an alleged violation and abuse of the rights and privileges of workers by the state government. However, the planned peaceful protest turned violent with allegations that thugs emerged and descended on the protesters and labour leaders. Speaking to The Nation on Thursday, the NLC publicity secretary, Benson Upah, said the NLC president could not be treated at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri because of the nature of the injuries he sustained during the scuffle. https://thenationonlineng.net/breaking-tinubu-hands-apc-flags-to-uzodinma-sylva-ododo/?fbclid=IwAR3qLsyumdUaXGMUtlo7aRVc1qf8VYxyp0grJ19bZte827BPJAj31PdgOQM

Arrest, Prosecute Police Officers Who Brutalised NLC President – Falana To IGP by Bobloco: 8:09am Human rights activist, Femi Falana, has called on the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure that officers who allegedly brutalised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero are arrested and prosecuted. Falana made the remark while faulting the statement by the police on Ajaero’s arrest. The police had denied arresting the NLC president during the union’s rally in Owerri, Imo State on Wednesday. It explained that Ajaero was only whisked away when miscreants hijacked the NLC Trade Union rally in Owerri. However, Falana said the explanation given by the police was tainted with loopholes. In a statement he signed, Falana wondered why the police failed to arrest the miscreants that brutalised the NLC President in their presence. He said: “The police version of the brutalisation of the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajero is full of loopholes. “Why did the police allow Comrade Ajero to be brutalised by the so-called miscreants? In other words, why did the police not protect him from the violent attack? “So the police who witnessed the attack without making any arrest suddenly turned round to take the victim to the police clinic. The members of the public who decried the barbaric attack took pictures, which exposed the misleading version of the police. “It is disturbing that the police justified the action of the so-called miscreants by saying that Comrade Ajero has disobeyed the order of a court. Why did the police not allow the court to purge Comrade Ajero of contempt of court? “We call on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate and ensure that the police officers who brutalised the NLC President are prosecuted without any delay.” https://dailypost.ng/2023/11/02/ajaero-arrest-prosecute-police-officers-who-brutalised-nlc-president-in-imo-falana-to-igp/
