Hearts were broken this week when German canoe slalom coach Stefan Henze died from head injuries after a car crash in Rio de Janeiro. The 35-year-old was an Olympic medallist, winning silver at Athens 2004 in the canoe slalom doubles with partner Marcus Becker, and was in Rio to coach Germany’s current female canoe team.
His death was not in vain however, as reports suggest he has managed to save the lives of four others as he was a registered organ donor. A representative of the Brazilian Health Ministry told German paper Die Welt that ‘heart, liver and both kidneys have been successfully transplanted, thus he has saved four lives’.
