Show us picture of your success farm that you attained in your first farming season.

For your information, am not only a practising farmer, but i have developed innovations in my area of farming that is well adopted all over Nigeria. Stop leading people astray

minimum of 3-5 years Indeed. Stop inciting people to be needlessly skeptical, wary and suspicious of people they may meet in future. No one needs 3-5 years to become successful in farming, farming like any other business requires a holistic blue print and action plan to make things happen shikena. Its not rocket science. Stop it, it's annoying
Your aspect of farming might not required much experience, but i tell you, most farming business are highly technical and requires modern input to get the best result. Your blue print is just a piece of paper without adequate knowledge, experience, commitment and passion to drive it. Remember, most farming requires nature as guide and number one parameter of which you have no control, all these makes farming risky and volatile. Your meaning of successful farming might be different from the way i see it. But for a real success to take place in most aspect of farming, you require time. 4-5 years with total commitment will take you to the level of what i will call successful farming. Remember it takes 10,000 hours to master an act, farming inclusive, start small but have a big dream.

Am not here to condemn or criticise but to refer you to your previous post where you requested for a partnership, but your comment here speaks otherwise of your experience and depth knowledge about fish farming. I observed you placed much concern on cost at the early age of fish which raises much concern about your expertise and will make potential investor have a change of mind in partnering with you

Ministers are aide of the President, they are not denied their allowances, because their work is temporal, why will aides be denied when their work is equally temporal when both are public servant

Legislative aid appointment is a temporary staff appointment and such you are not entitle to all peripheral attach to staff welfare
Legislative aide is entitled to allowances just like aides of the President, Vice President. Their appointment is not permanent like their elected bosses, so denying them allowances while their bosses and other categories of aides in other arms of government enjoys such is nothing but wickedness

Good morning all,
Pls I have 1000 fingerlings in stock, currently fed with 0.5mm copens, With an intention to sell as mélange at the forth month.
My intention is to feed them with foreign feed for 2 months and the remaining months with a Nigerian feed.

My questions are;
1. If I use copens, (havent seen where to buy zeigler)will the sales be profitable?

2.how good is Aller Aqua feed? Can I use it in place of copens?

3. I came across Ecofloat feed in the market and the price seems to be mild, is there anyone using it?
How good is it?

Considering the current price of feed, how much will it take me to raise the fish to melange level (4 months)

Pls help a brother, I look forward to your responds, thank you all.
Coppens is good but expensive, i dont know if Zeiglar is available in your part of the country. You can try you hand on Allaer Aqua or Skretting, they are very good for first two months. Then you can change to much more less expensive feed.

You seems to be much concern about feed, but i will advice you focus more on your water management, this is the bedrock of every success in fishfarming. You can manipulate your feed input but you cant manipulate your water requirement. It has to be 100% for maximum result. Remember every other factors depend on your water input
And for the cost to feed fish per one, this is very subjective. Just ensure you dont spend unnecessarily and you will definitely make it

Hello Ttalk, I really appreciate your contributions and support to farmers on this platform and by visitation. By way of digression I would like you give an update on "kaykaymill farm" he created "How I started my earthen pond" with a lot of details. You visited his farm and you provided technical support in the area of feed production to his farm. Please will like an update on how the farm is doing currently.
Oh, thats about a year ago, i visited his farm and offered advice on local feed formulation. His initial plan was to stock for 5months but he started late and by November the water level started decreasing rapidly so he had to sell at melange.

Yes, his production was successful, i could remember he called to tell me one of the pond give 40 baff, that would be about 1300kg of 4000 fishes. Since he sold at melange average weight was around 350grams. Looking at the circumstances then, it was a good season for him despite some challenges. He later dug borehole to complement the natural water.

Kaykamil has been a very shrewd young businessman

Hi all, I am a new fish farmer. I have started with 3k fishes. I am using rented ponds before digging my own ponds in my own land.

I need to ask a few questions and will appreciate answers from you guys.

1. I was given an estimation of 650k for 3k fishes from juvenile to maturity will this suffice?

2. I started with feeding 3 days daily but was told to reduce it to just 2 times per day. Will this be okay?

3. With an investment of say 650-700k is it possible to make profit of at least 200k in four months? I ask this cos I have had people dropping out saying the market is ruined. A lady even told me she lost 80k. I can be patient but the stories I have been reading scare me a bit.
Let me start from your 3rd question of whether you can make profit of 200k in four months.

Sir, fish farming is not trading where you buy @ 200 and sell at 300naira with profit of 100naira. It is an investment that requires both intangible and physical asset over a period of time.
Therefore to make profit you need to invest in the right skill
You need to invest in physical tools that will aid your operation
Then you need enough time for the intangible and tangible asset to mature before profit start coming in

Sadly, most farmers are not patient enough before they quit. It doesnt matter whether you make profit or not from your first stocking, what matters is whether you are prepared to take your farming to the point where it will start generating income? If you are ready then you can even make 100% gross profit. But this doesnt happen just like that and i dont see it happening on your first attempt but it surely easy and simple to achieve

To your second question, Number of time you feed your fish is a function of your feed composition, fish metabolism, age of fish and water temperature. But economically, feeding twice or even once could save you some cash and boost your profit

To answer you first question, your skills and expertise cum business sense would determine how much you spend. You can even spend less than 200naira per fish but it all boiled down to my previous point

Hmmmm it's been a very long time I visited this thread. I can see that the strong are still very active in the business.

It still hurts to see the assets I put so much passion, energy and money into for rearing catfish lay in waste.
After 5 consecutive loss at harvest with no one to hold responsible, juveniles seller will blame either your feed, water or farm practices for the poor output and even if same person supply all they will still find something to shift the blame to.

Do you want to talk about the buyers who price the fish same amount as they buy from the catfish wizards in Ijebu. Who can sell at the most ridiculous prices and still make profit compared to me in town that changes water in concrete pond 4 to 5 times a week with every expensive petrol and to talk of feed that rises in cost by excruciating percentage without warning.

Now I wonder what is the average cost of good feed per kg, cost of seed, cost changing water, cost of treatment in relation to selling price kg bearing in mind an average small farmer that raises 2-3 thousands fishes per cycle in a concrete or tarpaulin pond.

One now begin to wonder, is making profit in catfish farming truly real as we read on this thread and in other places. I still wonder how survived paying back my investors who I promised return on their investment after making loss on the actual money.

After paying them, what I had left could not raise another cycle as the associated cost will even increase the loss more because volume as been the major advantage of catfish farming. Then I decided to pour what I have left in Moku Mogbe Modaran (MMM) to turn around the money to be enough to raise another cycle to see if I can make make profit. We all know how the story went.

What do I do now with the Concrete pond that is diminishing by the day without use, the reserve the tank and borehole (at least they are still put to other use).

@Robonski, @Chilan @other gurus in the house who have survived in the business so far, please WHAT DO I DO.....?!
Your story raises so much concern until i got to where you invested in MMM and i quickly know what might be the cause of your loss.

Let me be practical about fish business. I would say you need at least 4 consecutive stocking with complete dedication before you master strategy that would quarrantee profit in the business.

Also, concrete pond system requires substantial investment over some period of time for it to generate income and profit. Initial investment in fish business requires external fund to boost it and not depend on reinvesting profit from the business, because there is no such profit at the initial stage.

One thing i know of a certain is that fish farming is a business, it is not a lotto, coupon, kalokalo or gambling. You must have a business mind in order to succeed.

But how can you have business mind and still believe in MMM?

Learn all the strategies that would make you succeed from people around you that are successful. There is no magic in this business. You do the right thing, you get the right result. Work on your water management, think solar, flow through, aeration, partial re-circulatory. Think feed, formulation, feed supplementary. Think added value to your product. I tell you there are so many potential that would guarantee you money with proper investment.

I wish you best of luck
