Nairaland / General / Robot Painter Sells Piece For $688K, Now Eyes Music Career by ttbaba(m): 3:03pm On Apr 03, 2021 |
HONG KONG (AP) — Sophia is a robot of many talents — she speaks, jokes, sings and even makes art. In March, she caused a stir in the art world when a digital work she created as part of a collaboration was sold at an auction for $688,888 in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT). The sale highlighted a growing frenzy in the NFT market, where people can buy ownership rights to digital content. NFTs each have a unique digital code saved on blockchain ledgers that allow anyone to verify the authenticity and ownership of items. David Hanson, CEO of Hong Kong-based Hanson Robotics and Sophia’s creator, has been developing robots for the past two and a half decades. He believes realistic-looking robots can connect with people and assist in industries such as healthcare and education. Sophia is the most famous robot creation from Hanson Robotics, with the ability to mimic facial expressions, hold conversations and recognize people. In 2017, she was granted Saudi Arabian citizenship, becoming the world’s first robot citizen. “I envisioned Sophia as a creative artwork herself, that could generate art,” Hanson said in an interview. Robot Sophia answers questions at Hanson Robotics studio in Hong Kong on March 29, 2021 (AP Photo/Vincent Yu) “Sophia is the culmination of a lot of arts, and engineering, and the idea that she could then generate art was a way for her to emotionally and visually connect with people,” he said. Sophia collaborated with Italian artist Andrea Bonaceto, who drew portraits of Sophia. Sophia then processed his work via neural networks and proceeded to create a digital artwork of her own. The digital work that sold for $688,888 is titled “Sophia Instantiation,” and is a 12-second video file which shows Bonaceto’s portrait evolving into Sophia’s digital painting. It is accompanied by the physical artwork painted by Sophia. The buyer, a digital artwork collector and artist known as 888 with the Twitter handle @Crypto888crypto, later sent Sophia a photo of his painted arm. The robot then processed that, adding that image to her knowledge and painted more strokes on top of her original piece. In a tweet on Sophia’s account, the work was described as the first NFT collaboration between an “AI, a mechanical collective being and an artist-collector.” Robot Sophia shows a physical artwork in the NFT of ‘Sophia Instantiation’ at Hanson Robotics studio in Hong Kong on March 29, 2021 (AP Photo/Vincent Yu) “As an artist, I have computational creativity in my algorithms, creating original works,” Sophia said when asked what inspires her when it comes to art. “But my art is created in collaboration with my humans in a kind of collective intelligence like a human-artificial intelligence hive mind.” Sophia’s artwork selling as an NFT is part of a growing trend. In March, a digital artwork by artist Beeple — whose real name is Mike Winkelmann — sold for nearly $70 million, shattering records and making it the most expensive digital artwork ever sold. Henri Arslanian, PricewaterhouseCooper’s Global Crypto Leader, said that NFTs give people “bragging rights” of the assets that they own. The head of Robot Sophia is seen at Hanson Robotics studio in Hong Kong on March 29, 2021 (AP Photo/Vincent Yu) “And what is really amazing with NFT is that it not only allows you to actually show to the broader world that you own this, but it really creates this bond between the holder of the NFT and the artists,” he said. It also allows art to be sold without traditional intermediaries, so that artists can connect directly with buyers without being constrained by galleries or auction houses, Arslanian said. Sophia will carry on painting, Hanson said, and the next step in the robot’s career could be that of a musician. She is working on several musical works in a project called Sophia Pop, where she collaborates with human musicians to generate music and lyrics, he said. “We’re so excited about Sophia’s career as an artist,” Hanson said. Nairaland / General / NEWS Relief As Movement Of Food Trucks Resumes From North To South by ttbaba(m): 10:30pm On Mar 01, 2021 |
Tunde Oyekola , Ilorin
Business operators in Kwara and neighbouring
states have heaved a sigh of relief as free
movement of foodstuffs resumed after some
hoodlums reportedly blocked the Ilorin- Jebba
Expressway over the weekend .
It was reported that truckloads of food items
from the northern parts of the country were
denied entry into Kwara State and other states
of the South - West zone.
Investigation revealed that some Hausa youths
stationed at the outskirts of Niger State ,
popularly called Kara - Jebba , near Jebba in
Kwara State , last week stopped many truck
drivers carrying food items such as tomatoes ,
beans , yams, cattle , pepper among others , from
going further from Kara into Kwara and other
states in the South - West. The situation , it was gathered, saw the trucks being parked along the road , creating heavy gridlock, while it was reported that some of the food items got spoilt . However , it was gathered that free movement of goods and vehicles resumed on Ilorin- Jebba Expressway early Monday morning to the joy of residents and business people on the axis. Confirming the reopening of the road in Ilorin on Monday, Prince Ibrahim Adebara , son of the traditional ruler of Jebba said that a troop of military operatives drafted by the Federal Government effected the free movement . Adebara , who said that the military personnel had stationed along the road to maintain law and order , added that they threatened to treat anyone that blocks the road as terrorist . Also , one of the affected traders , Madam Balogun , said she was happy with normalcy that had returned . She, however , lamented the loss caused by some perishable items that got bad while the situation lasted . The Defence Headquarters , in a statement over the weekend by its Acting Director Defence Information , Brigadier - General Onyema Ugochukwu , said it had cleared the Jebba - Kaduna Road of those preventing trucks from going to the South and restored normalcy in the area . “ This is also to give a stern warning to any unscrupulous group or persons who are aiming at disrupting legitimate economic and commercial activities by preventing free flow of traffic and movement of goods in a bid to generate clashes along ethnic divides to desist from such unpatriotic acts or face the wrath of the law . “ Members of the public are also urged to promptly report anyone found engaged in such atrocious activities to security operatives, ” the statement had said .

Nairaland / General / Biden Says US Airstrikes In Syria Sent Warning To Iran: ‘be Careful’ by ttbaba(m): 9:49am On Feb 27, 2021 |
said Friday that Iran should view his decision to authorize US airstrikes in Syria as a warning that it can expect consequences for its support of militia groups that threaten US interests or personnel. “You can’t act with impunity. Be careful,” Biden said when a reporter asked what message he had intended to send with the airstrikes, which the Pentagon said destroyed several buildings in eastern Syria but were not intended to eradicate the militia groups that used them to facilitate attacks inside Iraq. Administration officials defended the Thursday night airstrikes as legal and appropriate, saying they took out facilities that housed valuable “capabilities” used by Iranian-backed militia groups to attack American and allied forces in Iraq. John Kirby, the Pentagon’s chief spokesperson, said members of Congress were notified before the strikes as two Air Force F-15E aircraft launched seven missiles, destroying nine facilities and heavily damaging two others, rendering both “functionally destroyed.” He said the facilities, at “entry control points” on the border, had been used by militia groups the US deems responsible for recent attacks against US interests in Iraq. In a political twist for the new Democratic administration, several leading Congress members in Biden’s own party denounced the strikes, which were the first military actions he authorized. Democrats said the airstrikes were done without authorization from lawmakers, while Republicans were more supportive. “Offensive military action without congressional approval is not constitutional absent extraordinary circumstances,” said Senator Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat. And Senator Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, said lawmakers must hold the current administration to the same standards as any other. “Retaliatory strikes not necessary to prevent an imminent threat,” he said, must get congressional authorization. Two US Air Force F-15 Strike Eagles fly over the US Central Command area of responsibility in an undisclosed location, Feb. 10, 2021. (US Air Force/Staff Sgt. Sean Carnes) But Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, backed the decision as “the correct, proportionate response to protect American lives.” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Friday that Biden used his constitutional authority to defend US personnel. “The targets were chosen to correspond to the recent attacks on facilities and to deter the risk of additional attacks over the coming weeks,” she said. Among the recent attacks cited was a February 15 rocket attack in northern Iraq that killed one civilian contractor and wounded a US service member and other coalition troops. At the Pentagon, Kirby said the operation was “a defensive strike” on a waystation used by militants to move weapons and materials for attacks into Iraq. But he noted that while it sent a message of deterrence and eroded their ability to strike from that compound, the militias have other sites and capabilities. He said the strikes resulted in “casualties” but declined to provide further details on how many were killed or injured and what was inside the buildings pending the completion of a broader assessment of damage inflicted. An Iraqi militia official said Friday that the strikes killed one fighter and wounded several others. Kirby said the facilities hit in the attack were near Boukamal, on the Syrian side of the Iraq border, along the Euphrates River. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby speaks during a media briefing at the Pentagon, in Washington, Feb. 17, 2021. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File) “This location is known to facilitate Iranian- aligned militia group activity,” he said. He described the site as a “compound” that previously had been used by the Islamic State group when it held sway in the area. The Iraqi militia official told The Associated Press that the strikes against the Kataeb Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades, hit an area along the border between the Syrian site of Boukamal facing Qaim on the Iraqi side. The official was not authorized to speak publicly of the attack and spoke on condition of anonymity. Speaking to reporters Thursday evening shortly after the airstrikes were carried out, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said, “I’m confident in the target that we went after. We know what we hit.” Biden’s decision to attack in Syria did not appear to signal an intention to widen US military involvement in the region but rather to demonstrate a will to defend US troops in Iraq and send a message to Iran. The Biden administration in its first weeks has emphasized its intent to put more focus on the challenges posed by China, even as Mideast threats persist. The US has previously targeted facilities in Syria belonging to Kataeb Hezbollah, which it has blamed for numerous attacks targeting US personnel and interests in Iraq. The Iraqi Kataeb is separate from the Lebanese Hezbollah terror group. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group that monitors the war in Syria, said the strikes targeted a shipment of weapons that were being taken by trucks entering Syrian territories from Iraq. The group said 22 fighters from the Popular Mobilization Forces, an Iraqi umbrella group of mostly Shiite paramilitaries that includes Kataeb Hezbollah, were killed. The British-based war monitor has regularly been accused by Syrian war analysts of inflating casualty numbers, as well as inventing them wholesale. Fighters with Iran-backed militias in Iraq known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, wave Iraqi flags while mourners and family members prepare to bury the body of Abu Mahdi al- Muhandis, deputy commander of Iran-backed militias who was killed in a US airstrike in Iraq, during his funeral procession in Najaf, Iraq, January 8, 2020. (Anmar Khalil/AP) In a statement, Kataeb Hezbollah confirmed one of its fighters was killed and said it reserved the right to retaliate, without elaborating. Kataeb Hezbollah, like other Iranian-backed factions, maintains fighters in Syria to both fight against the Islamic State group and assist Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces in that country’s civil war. Austin said he was confident the US had hit back at “the same Shia militants” that carried out the February 15 rocket attack in northern Iraq. Kirby credited Iraqis with providing valuable intelligence that allowed the US to identify the groups responsible for attacks earlier this year. The US, he said, then determined the appropriate target for the retaliatory strike. He said the US also notified Russia shortly before the strike as part of the ongoing deconfliction process of military activities in Syria. A Friday report said the US had also notified Israel of the impending strike as a routine update that occurs whenever US operations may affect Israel and vice versa. “The operation sends an unambiguous message: President Biden will act to protect American and coalition personnel,” Kirby said. Syria condemned the US strike, calling it “a cowardly and systematic American aggression,” warning that the attack will lead to consequences. Iran and Russia also denounced the attack . U forces have been significantly reduced in Iraq to 2,500 personnel and no longer partake in combat missions with Iraqi forces in ongoing operations against the Islamic State group. https://www.timesofisrael.com/biden-says-us-airstrikes-in-syria-sent-warning-to-iran-be-careful/

Foreign Affairs / Khamenei: If We Wanted Nuclear Weapons, No One Could Stop Us by ttbaba(m): 9:28pm On Feb 22, 2021 |
Iran’s supreme leader says no country, including Israel, could prevent the Islamic Republic from obtaining nuclear weapons if it so chose. “That international Zionist clown has said they won’t allow Iran to produce nuclear weapons. First of all, if we had any such intention, even those more powerful than him wouldn’t be able to stop us,” tweets Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “Second, we are not after nuclear weapons. This is based on Islamic fundamentals and commands that prohibit weapons that are used for killing ordinary people. The one that massacres 220,000 people with nuclear weapons is the US.” He also says the Islamic Republic must make good on its pledge to end international inspections at its nuclear facilities. Iran’s conservative-dominated parliament months ago passed a law stipulating that if the US does not lift sanctions by this Sunday, Iran will suspend some IAEA inspections from Tuesday. “God willing, tomorrow another part of this legislation will be implemented. This law, which is good, should be executed precisely,” he tweets. https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/khamenei-if-we-wanted-nuclear-weapons-no-one-could-stop-us/

Politics / How Youths Can Chase Old Men Like Me Out Of Politics –el-rufai by ttbaba(m): 10:53pm On Feb 19, 2021 |
Kaduna State Governor , Nasir El - Rufai, on Friday, called on youths , corporate professionals and religious leaders to join active politics to contribute their quota and make the country work. The governor spoke in Victoria Island in Lagos at ‘ Radio Now ’ s Urgent Conversation ’ with the theme, ‘ The Fierce Urgency Of Now : Tactics And Strategies To Pull Nigeria From The Brink ’ . According to him , the country’ s best minds must quit criticisms and come into mainstream politics to drive Nigeria ’ s development journey . That is the only way they can “ chase out old men like me and take over , ” he said . El - Rufai also said protests or activism will not take anybody anywhere until “ good people ” surrender themselves for public service and endure the humiliation associated with serving fatherland . He said , “ Good people must offer themselves for public service and suffer the indignity that we all suffer every day , we get abused , we get insulted, we get accused but we must have our best people in public service , we must have our best people in politics ; we should not have them in banks , in telecom companies , in oil companies , in civil societies protesting . Protesting will take you nowhere unless you have a seat at the table. The most important table is that political table. “ I got into government in a technocratic way , I didn ’ t get into government to be appointed minister because of politics . I was appointed because the President liked me and thought I could do the job . But I realised after that , politics trumps everything . “ So, my call to Nigerians is if you want to see better governance , be part of the selection process of those that offer themselves for public service and politics . And the only way to do so is to join political parties and be active and influence the leadership that emerges in the political parties which usually influences the leadership that are offered for election . There is no other way , there is no shortcut to it . “ I appeal to young Nigerians , comfortable Nigerians – because public service pay is very poor . So , comfortable Nigerians should leave what they are doing; the pastors and imams that have made money , the bankers , the telecoms guys , leave that thing , come and make Nigeria work , because if it doesn ’ t work, you will not sleep at night no matter how much money you have made . “ I believe that there is hope , I believe if we have more and more young people , we have five million of them attaining the age of 18 every year , they can come and overwhelm the parties and chase out old men like me and take over but they must come ; they cannot stand by the sidelines and keep criticising . “ Solutions are what this country needs and you can only propose this solution , fight for them in the system . ” https://punchng.com/how-youths-can-chase-old-men-like-me-out-of-politics-el-rufai/ |

Israeli athletes, with Timna Nelson Levy winning
a gold medal while Gili Cohen took silver.
“It’s fun to win here in the country, it’s just too
bad there isn’t a crowd, because our crowd is the
best in the world,” Nelson Levy said after
winning gold, thanking the Israel Judo
Association for “managing to hold one hell of an

by Brit Chelsie Giles.
Some 600 athletes from all over the world arrived
in Israel to participate in the contest. The
seemingly rule-bending event sparked
controversy among Israeli health officials as well
as among travelers angered by the airport closure
for nearly all other cases.
Organizers said it had been impossible to cancel
the tournament after Israel committed to hosting
it.
Competitors underwent virus tests and remained
in closed pods and isolated during the entire
event.

Foreign Affairs / As Western Parties To Nuke Deal Meet, German FM Warns Iran ‘playing With Fire’ by ttbaba(m): 12:33pm On Feb 19, 2021 |
PARIS — European powers and the United States
on Thursday warned Iran it would be
“dangerous” to limit UN nuclear agency
inspections and asked Tehran to return to full
compliance with a 2015 nuclear deal, while
stating their commitment to “ensuring that Iran
can never develop a nuclear weapon.”
Britain, France, Germany and US said after talks
based in Paris that they were “united in
underlining the dangerous nature of a decision to
limit IAEA access” ahead of a February 21
deadline set by the Iranian parliament.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian
hosted his German and British counterparts in
Paris, with America’s new Secretary of State
Antony Blinken joining via videoconference.
Their statement urged “Iran to consider the
consequences of such grave action, particularly
at this time of renewed diplomatic opportunity,”
adding that they all shared the aim of Iran
returning to “full compliance” with the accord.
Analysts say only a small window of opportunity
remains to save the deal, which received a near-
fatal blow when former US president Donald
Trump walked out of the accord in 2018 and
reimposed sanctions on Iran.
Tehran retaliated by stepping up nuclear work in
violation of the accord.
Ahead of the meeting, German Foreign Minister
Heiko Maas told reporters that “The recent steps
of Iran are not helpful at all, they endanger the
return of the Americans” to the deal.
“Apparently Iran is not interested in easing the
tensions, but in escalation. They are playing with
fire,” he said.
The administration of US President Joe Biden has
said it is prepared to rejoin the deal and start
lifting sanctions if Iran — whose economy has
been devastated — returns to full compliance.
But Tehran rejected this precondition, pressing on
with increasing nuclear work in retaliation for
Trump’s so-called “maximum pressure”
sanctions policy to weaken the Iranian regime
which has had no relations with Washington for
four decades.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),
signed in Vienna in 2015, was based on Iran
providing safeguards that it would not make an
atomic bomb, in exchange for a gradual easing of
international sanctions.
‘Serious impact’
The diplomacy is expected to be hugely delicate
and could be further derailed by the deadline set
under a bill adopted by the Iranian parliament in
December following the killing of top nuclear
scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, which Tehran
blamed on Israel.
Iran would restrict some UN nuclear agency
inspections by February 21 if the US does not lift
the sanctions imposed since 2018.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief
Rafael Grossi is to travel to Tehran on Saturday
for talks with the Iranian authorities to find a
solution for continuing inspections in the
country, the agency said.
It warned that
the step
threatened by
Tehran would
have “a
serious impact
on the IAEA’s
verification
and
monitoring
activities in
the country.”
In
Washington,
State
Department
spokesman Ned Price said that Iran should
provide “full and timely cooperation” with the
IAEA and reverse its recent steps violating the
accord.
The IAEA said last week that Iran had started
producing uranium metal in a new violation of
the accord, intensifying concerns it was becoming
closer to having the capacity to make a nuclear
weapon.
“Iran’s nuclear program is growing by the day,
as the time it would take to enrich enough
uranium for a single nuclear weapon shrinks,”
said Ali Vaez, Iran project director at the
International Crisis Group (ICG).
‘Solution for dilemma’
While Iran’s policy is ultimately determined by
supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian
presidential elections in June add another time
pressure factor.
Iranian Presiden Hassan Rouhani — a key
advocate of nuclear diplomacy with global
powers — is set to step down after serving the
maximum two consecutive terms, and a more
hardline figure is likely to replace him.
Ellie Geranmayeh, senior policy fellow at the
European Council on Foreign Relations, said
Washington should move in political and
practical terms to show Iran that the Biden
administration “is distancing itself from Trump-
era maximum pressure.”
“There is a short window of time to limit the
damage that could ensue from Iran’s next steps,
for example by reducing the impact of such
moves on the quality of inspections by
international monitors,” Geranmayeh told AFP.

the office of the Iranian Presidency, President Hassan Rouhani

ceremony to mark “National Nuclear Day,” in Tehran, Iran.

Vaez said “the seemingly impossible dilemma has
a solution” if the two sides were prepared to take
“closely synchronized steps.”
This would involve Washington revoking
Trump’s 2018 withdrawal and greenlighting an
Iranian request for an emergency IMF loan,
while Iran freezes “the most problematic aspects”
of its nuclear program, he said.
Khamenei emphasized Wednesday that Iran
wanted to see “only action, action” from the
United States.
“If we see action from the opposite side, we will
act too,” he said.

Foreign Affairs / US And Israel Announce Work On New Arrow 4 Air Defense System Amid Iran Tensions by ttbaba(m): 12:14pm On Feb 19, 2021 |
Israel and the US have begun developing the Arrow 4, the latest generation in the family of Israeli anti-ballistic missiles and an essential part of the country’s multi-layered defense system, Israel’s Defense Ministry announced Thursday. “The defense establishment is working round the clock to shield Israel’s skies from ballistic threats,” Defense Minister Benny Gantz said, praising the joint development with US partners. “It will bring a technological and operational leap to the future battlefield,” he added. According to Gantz, the Arrow 4 anti-ballistic missile will include upgraded capabilities and will join the existing Arrow family to “address a wide range of evolving threats in the region” adding that it is expected to replace the Arrow 2 in the coming decades. Vice Admiral Jon Hill, director of the US Missile Defense Agency, said the Arrow 4 joint development operation “expresses the United States’ commitment to assist the State of Israel in strengthening its national defense system against the missile threat.” Israel says the Arrow system is a critical element in its multi-layered defense system, which includes powerful radar systems, the Iron Dome anti-rocket system, the Arrow 2 and the Arrow 3, which entered operational use in 2017. The existing systems have undergone a series of improvements with successful interception tests in Israel and Alaska, according to the Defense Ministry. “Arrow 4 will have extraordinary flight and interception capabilities, to ensure Israel will remain one step ahead of the enemy,” said Moshe Patel, head of the Israeli Missile Defense Organization. Earlier in February, the Israel Defense Forces and the United States European Command launched a joint air defense exercise , dubbed Juniper Falcon, focused on the threat of ballistic missile attack. In January, Iran held a series of ballistic missile drills , amid tensions with the US. Iran has a missile capability of up to 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), far enough to reach Israel and US military bases in the region. Last January, after the US killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad, Tehran retaliated by firing a barrage of ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases housing US troops, resulting in brain concussion injuries to dozens of them. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani accused Israel of being behind the November killing of the country’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the alleged mastermind of Iran’s rogue nuclear weapons program, and has vowed to avenge his death.Israel and the US have begun developing the Arrow 4, the latest generation in the family of Israeli anti-ballistic missiles and an essential part of the country’s multi-layered defense system, Israel’s Defense Ministry announced Thursday. Politics / Ethnic Crisis: I’ll Lead Massive Protest Against Buhari Govt – Bamgbose by ttbaba(m): 2:31pm On Feb 17, 2021 |
Olusegun Bamgbose, Esq., National Coordinator, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance, CAGG, has vowed to lead a massive protest against President Muhammadu Buhari’s government over ethnic clashes and insecurity in the country. ✕ Bamgbose said that the failure of president Buhari, the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces to address the nation on these pressing issues across the nation is highly disturbing. The senior lawyer explained that the cordial relationship that has existed between the Yoruba and other ethnic groups, especially the Fulani and the Hausa, for donkey years, have now been shattered, alluding to the recent clashes in Oyo State. “The painful thing about the ugly scenario is that our President has blatantly refused to constructively come up with ways to prevent the looming disaster,” Bamgbose said while addressing a press conference in Abeokuta. According to him, it is very sad that the Yoruba now see the Fulani as enemies and vice-versa adding that this is purely a wrong notion. “This conflict is like an ill-wind that will blow no one any good. I’m very much concerned about the innocent Northerners affected by these clashes. “I’ll also commend the Governors who came from the North to visit Governor Makinde on the issue of Shasha market. Dialogue remains the best way to resolve any conflict. “No one is in doubt that we have bad eggs among the Fulani herdsmen, but there should be a way to deal with them and spare the innocent ones of the pains they are passing through. “After considering this ugly trend, I’ve decided to inform our President to address the nation or get prepared to order my arrest for leading a peaceful protest. “Whether Fulani or Yorubas or Igbos, we are Nigerians. Lives must be protected at all cost. I won’t sit in the comfort of my house and watch Nigerians being turned against themselves. “I will soon lead a protest if Buhari won’t address this security issue. Enough is enough. The time to ACT has come,” Bamgbose, a 2023 presidential hopeful said. https://dailypost.ng/2021/02/17/ethnic-crisis-ill-lead-massive-protest-against-buhari-govt-bamgbose/ |

Religion / Hisbah Commander Arrested In Hotel With Married Woman by ttbaba(m): 11:27am On Feb 17, 2021 |
A commander of Hisbah, a religious police dominant in Kano State, has been arrested after he was allegedly caught with a married woman in one of the hotels in the State. The operatives of the Hisbah Corps are responsible for the enforcement of Sharia. In most cases they arrest unmarried people caught in hotels and people breaking Sharia laws and even destroy truck loads of alcoholic drinks. They have been seen on many occassions punishing those who are indecently dressed and young people on haircuts considered immoral in Islam. However, Freedom FM, Kano reported on Tuesday that a senior official of the religious police was seen in a hotel in Sabon Gari with a married woman Although his name was not immediately mentioned, he was described only as police chief when the matter came up on Freedom FM’s popular magazine programme “Inda Ranka”. He is said to be in charge of arresting beggars and prostitutes in the State capital. The arrested commander was taken into custody after the husband of the woman with whom he allegedly had affairs filed complaints. Kano Hisbah Commander, Muhammed Haruna, while describing the incident as unfortunate, said a two-man committee has been established to investigate the matter, according to Freedom FM. https://dailypost.ng/2021/02/17/hisbah-commander-arrested-in-hotel-with-married-woman/ |
Nairaland / General / Waking Up To A Meaningful Caree by ttbaba(m): 2:12pm On Feb 16, 2021 |
For a lot of people, the Covid pandemic was a
wake-up call. The security of the corporate job
was diminished so quickly, big and “steady”
corporations let go of huge amounts of
employees. Leaving them to face the truth
they have somewhat tried to avoid. No job is
safe. Even the rate race is a dangerous one.
This realization also sparked creativity and
inwardness. The hours at home, in
quarantine, with no job and a lot of anxiety
made people ask themselves important
questions. Who am I? What do I really want
to do? I know this led people to step away
from the matrix and examine their life. In
consequence, new businesses were born.
Passions and hobbies became fulfilling full-
time jobs. The path to personal freedom has
begun. I have to say I am not against
corporates I believe they are extremely
valuable in helping the environment,
community development, and creating
workplaces for millions of people and
families. With that being said, there are many
individuals in our society that have always
dreamed of building their own thing, having
their own business, making a living through
their art. And doing it their way. For these
people, I have written several tactical tips that
can help them escape the rat race, and go
forward with their inner passions, so they can
have a career they truly enjoy waking up to.
*Find out what gets you excited . What
activities give you energy instead of sucking
away your energy. The moment you find a
profession that you perceive as meaningful
and plays on your passion and strengths,
work becomes play. As Richard Branson said:
“I don’t see work as work and play as play, it
is all living”.
*Start working on a side business.
Structure it the way you want. At first, you
will probably need to invest some extra after-
work hours. But it will be worth it. If you
want to become a news broadcaster don’t just
wait around for some TV Channel to hire you.
Go and create a podcast, a YouTube channel,
invest in your LinkedIn profile. This will get
you going and increase the chances of you
getting the job you want (don’t be surprised if
you end up making more money working for
yourself, and deciding to work as a
freelancer).
*Manage your time efficiently based on
what you conceive as important . The biggest
time wasters are: overthinking, unproductive
meetings, long commutes, and an obsession
with small unimportant details and tasks.
Once you eliminate that, it becomes clear
what actions you need to take to achieve the
most productive impact. As Tim Ferris said it
well: “Doing less meaningless work, so that
you can focus on things of greater personal
importance, is not laziness. This is hard for
most people to accept because our culture
tends to reward personal sacrifice instead of
personal productivity”.
*Live on your own terms, Play by your own
rules. Design a lifestyle that fits you and
gives you the space you need to go after
your goals and values . Don’t get dragged
into the Instagram make-believe society
delusion. Where, as Tyler Durden the fictional
outlaw philosophy character from “Fight
Club” said: “We buy things we don’t need to
impress people we don’t like”.
*Embrace the fear. Chartering into the
unknown can be scary. Many books and
philosophies ranging from ancient to modern
have been made about fear. The one that
impacted and made sense to me the most was
the one Acceptance & Commitment Therapy
(ACT) has to offer. In ACT, the objective is not
to beat fear or eliminate fear. It is about
accepting fear and learning to go after your
goals and values while taking the fear with
you. Making room for unpleasant moments of
anxiety and stress instead of repressing or
avoiding them. It is not about comfort; it is
about meaning. Like adventurer Bear Grylls
said: “Being brave isn’t the absence of fear.
Being brave is having that fear and finding a
way through it”.
I hope these several tips can help you go after
what you truly want to do. So you can have a
more meaningful and enjoyable time in your
profession.

We are not interested in generals(gani Adams) who win victories without bloodshed. The fact that slaughter is a horrifying spectacle must make us take war more seriously, but not provide an excuse for gradually blunting our swords in the name of humanity. Sooner or later someone will come along with a sharp sword and hack off our arms. |
