You can use Africhange or Lemonade. I find them to be safe, reliable and have fairly stable exchange rate.

Dear Seniors,

Please i need your advice and guidance on how easy/fast it is to get passport renewed in Canada.

I am due to start my 1 year program in September at UNB Saint John. However, my passport will expire 1st week of february 2023 hence my Visa expiry date is tied to it.

I want to ask if i can start the online renewal process before I leave Nigeria so I can get an appointment once I resume or I should wait till I get there before starting the process. Also, how easily can one got to Ottawa from Saint John?

Many thanks.
Since your passport is expiring in less than a year, I will advise that you simply renew it in Nigeria before you start coming. Alternatively you may wish to book an appointment at the embassy before your arrival, ensure the appointment date falls within your second month of arrival (if you intend to leave your passport in the embassy), that way you can use your passport for all the processes that will require passport presentation within your first month of arrival.

Do consider the need for you to travel to Ottawa for the renewal application and the protracted wait time. You may be lucky to get your passport ready within three months of application. Remember you also need to pay 50CAD (in the form of money order to the embassy) in addition to the regular passport fee you will pay online (108USD).

Wishing you all the best

Singapore a simple, peaceful, lovely and friendly country the number one most powerful passport in the world was visa-free to Nigerians, till Nigerians took it for granted due to drug trafficking and crime, there was no week without a Nigerian caught doing a criminal act. In 2014/2015 the privilege was taken away, visa-free was cancelled, and my PR application was denied. Communities with a lot of Nigerians were required to vacate. Malaysia the closest country became the hotspot. I almost lost my job, my work visa was limited to 12 months to be renewed yearly. My ex-boss was a big help to me, if not I would have been kicked out for just being a Nigerian. Till I left that country every time I receive my salary I get a call from my bank to verify the payment that was made. Almost got my account locked & closed because I wired money to Nigeria. So so many ill-treatment for just being a Nigerian. So if you’re comparing race and denying a country then you’re mistaken. These are just a few things I experienced due to the reputation and the stigma attached to the name Nigeria. So when you ask me “Where are you from” don’t expect Nigeria from me.
Like I said if you haven’t LIVED outside North America or UK you can't understand how the name Nigeria is costing people. Canada did a great job curbing and limiting the influx of migrants that’s why there’s limited discrimination and you can easily see Nigerians working in Banks or financial institutions in Canada.
The talk about our future generation, I choose not to discuss that, my honest truth: the future generation of Nigeria is Fked.
Only people who have experienced it will understand. It is sad that in South East Asia, it got to the level where if you identify as Nigerian, the next question was if you are from the North or South of Nigeria? So Sad!

I've always identify as a Nigerian, and I don't judge those who refuse to identify as Nigerians. The treatment is always different if you are staying in South East Asia. I remember when I first entered Malaysia for my PhD, a friend told me that when random ppl ask him of his Nationality he claim to hail from Somalia or Sudan, and he really looked like a Sudanese .

The experience of awful treatment of Nigerians in South East Asia has brought out the racism in me towards Asians. I can't stand those people at all.

Although, am fed up with how things are going in my motherland and how the world see us, am still very proud of Nigeria and I will continue to be a good ambassador of my Nation.

Go on their appointment portal again, you will see some appointment-free days (30th March and 22 April)

WinterDreary:
Hi all,

Trying to renew my Nigerian passport. but it looks like appointments are all booked into May. I really need a passport before end of April for travel. Is there a chance the embassy attends to people who didn't book on that specific day? I'm thinkin of just going to Ottawa and seeing if they'll attend to me this April. However, my appointment is for May. Don't know much about how things work there. Is this possible?

As for the GCMS, you will just have to wait. Or you may try sending another one via https://www.getgcms.com. (I used it and I got my GCMS in less than 35 days)

GCMS or email from VO are the only two ways of identifying one's VO (that I know of).

But I believe your webform should be good enough.

Smithsonian12:
Thanks a lot Tyola! Appreciate the wishes too.
This is such huge relief.

For the GCMS, I sent a mail to CAIPS (the agency I used), this is my third or fourth follow up and they're quite prompt to respond (usually within 48hours), stating that they are also shocked by the delay from IRCC. They confirmed that they've received all my details and are waiting for response.

I don't really know my VO as I've never received any GCMS notes or updates that showed this. Is there any other way to know one's VO?

Hello all
Been reading this group a..... Didn't get most of the usual ghost updates or any communication. Also requested GCMS but it's been more than 4 months and nothing yet.

However, between when I submitted and now. I have changed employers and relocated outside Nigeria because of work, I've tried sending several webforms with no response, I tried again recently and was directed to mail Accra VO which I have done but no response still, has anyone successfully updated their employment record and address while waiting? How did you go about it please?
1. You may not see any ghost update. That is fine

2. GCMS don't usually last that long. You may want to check with the agency you applied through to be sure they received your documents, proof of payment of GCMS request fee and to be sure they have submitted your request to the responsible agency in Canada

3. Regarding change of address, provided you have raised a webform informing ircc and/or sent email to your VO (if you are sure of the VO), then you have nothing to worry about.

I was in the same situation, I never received response to my webform or my VO on my change of address. Yet, I received my ppr while I was outside the country, sent my documents to the nearest vfs (outside Nigeria) and I got my COPR.

So don't be disturbed, I'm wishing you all the best.

They are supposed to send you an IME for the infant. Nevertheless, you can schedule an upfront medical examination for the baby and then send the information sheet to AVO (or better upload on web form).

Good day house, please I would like to know if medicals are required from a 7month old baby? I had my baby in march during the lockdown and notified CIC ...however the baby's document has been sent for update but no response yet..
Meanwhile I and hubby are done with our biometrics since 2019
Yes, the baby needs medical screening.

Did you receive forms to fill out for adding the baby? Is the baby's name (&UCI) in your list of dependents?

This journey is truly an individual race that requires patience and hope.
AOR 2019 getting PPRs in Q4 2020? One thing is sure, one day AVO will deliver.

Meanwhile, for a reputable organization like IOM Abuja their response time and webpage is disappointing. I booked my medicals on a bank holiday (29th October) and they can’t even confirm via mail if I’ll be attended to.
I'll advice you email them via iomabujamedicalbooki@iom.int &/or fukonu@iom.int to confirm your booking.

I once booked via their online booking platform, received an email confirmation. Few days to the screening I decided to contact them via phone to double check my reservation, only for me to be told that they couldn't find my reservation, that I should make new reservation via email.

I wish you all the best

Raise a webform and request to add new born. A mail from CIC will include updating your family info forms, medicals and making payment after which you upload all those forms in your CIC profile. You can proactively complete medicals (book for medicals now if you haven't) and obtain an international passport before it is requested, so the process is seamless and time isn't wasted
Although you've been responded to earlier, I will like to share my experience with you

1. My AOR was on 08/12/2019. The last time I checked (in 05/05/2020 via CSE) all the four indices (Eligibility, Security, Criminality & background) were all valid.

2. Had a new born baby on 30/08/2020

3. Raised web form on 03/09/2020 (Although not necessary, I did attached my newborn's image)

4. On 11/09/2020 IRCC sent me a congratulatory message and an email address to which I was instructed to send specific information to. Note that the email address belongs to CPC Ottawa (my VO)

5. I sent them the email address, attached only the baby's image (at this stage no document was requested from me).

6. CPC Ottawa responded (16/09/2020) by sending me two categories of forms to fill (IMM5405 & IMM0008), requested for the baby's passport, birth certificate, evidence of payment of her processing fee (CAD225) & her passport photograph.

7. Meanwhile, I have since applied for baby's passport, it took a week to be ready. I have already collected her NPC birth cert.

8. I paid the processing fee using Barter Flutterwave virtual dollar card.

9. Filled the forms accordingly

10. Raised web form, attached all six documents (IMM0008, IMM5405, Int passport data page, Birth Cert, passport photo & Receipt of payment)

11. After two days they updated my account by adding her into my list of dependents and sent me Instruction of Medical Examination for the baby carrying her UCI.

12. Booked for Medicals in IOM Abuja.

13. Did medicals last Monday (19/10/2020), received new MEP the following day (20/10/2020) before returning home.

I guess taking things stepwise makes the process easier, clearer and faster. I've read on different fora, how it took some people months to have their new born added into their applications. Thus, I advise you go through the process in a stepwise manner.

Congratulations on your newborn.

iwinosajack:
Did i say it is “relevant to PR decision “? No! What i am saying is that the vo will scrutinize the reference letter from the HOD to make sure it’s from the school authorities.
NaijaGoingMaple:
That's not relevant to PR decision if the applicant satisfies the requirements. However, should paid study leave count as work experience? My take.. if employed to undertake a research Masters, then it may qualify. Otherwise, you can't have job description as a grad assistant different from your current study. Here the Masters was even done in another school which could call to question the acceptability of the job experience, School "A" may not employ you, and your supposed work experience (Masters) from School "B"
iwinosajack:
Were u working as graduate assistant & studying part time at the other schoolhuh

The question is not whether you were paid during the period but did u also perform the duties?? Had it been that you got ur msc from the same school u are working at or within the same country, that can easily fly.

Mind u, the vo is gonna scrutinize the reasons why an organization that spent so much money to train u (with the expectation that you will come back to work for them) would actively support u to become a pr in another country immediately you returned from study leave. That scrutiny will go beyond ur HOD.
Amanee:
This has a huge fishy stink

You better stick to the truth
I've been working in a university for almost a decade now. University job is not solely teaching, but it also covers research and development. MSc study is part of his research duties to the university. Based on the rules and guidelines of working in a university, he has worked for three years. He is not doing anything fishy.

The main responsibility of a graduate assistant is to ensure he runs his/her research towards earning an MSc degree within the first three years of employment. Some universities will even terminate your appointment if you fail to earn an MSc within the first three years. Although he/she is on study leave, such a person is expected to affiliate his/her publications to his Uni. This covers his duty of "conducting research" If he has assisted in teaching during his first few months or when he comes for holidays (In my Uni we don't allow grad assistants to teach), his HOD can add that to his duties in the reference letter. He is expected to conduct any duty assigned to him by the HOD (for example while studying, depending on the level of understanding between the staff, you may be asked to assist with editing articles for journals hosted by the department, assisting with preparation for conference to be hosted by your dept, etc)

In recap, while he is filing for promotion, the years he spent on study leave will be counted as part of his years of experience, that is why NUC recommended that an academic staff on study leave could be promoted once while on fellowship. Thus his three years is part of his years of experience.

Asking to get pof from mfb. that's not right as it is not allowed. I already reported it
Uncle/Aunty Kiari, can you justify your source please?

I know people that are currently PRs and have used their fixed deposits from reputable MFB as POF.

By the way, MFBs are financial institutions too, recognized by the law.

What matters more is that the MFB must have a standard website & an active social media account (e.g Twitter). Thus it makes it easier for IRCC to do the necessary verification.

Please be extremely sure of information before dishing it out on platforms. Some ppl prefer using MFB due to higher interest rate when compared to conventional banks. Similarly, there are lots of profitable small and medium scale investments in MFBs.

But when someone says I'm harsh when I wasn't, it was only right I inserted harshness in my response to him so he can know the difference next time. Those words were consciously inserted there.
It's painful to be misunderstood cos one let his need for sweet words get the most of him.

I make an effort to knock into your thick heads things people have been screaming about since ages that didn't get in from when they were being said. Second time in a week a post about paying in money is making it there and you think it is funny or harsh cos people are told the brutal truth about their intended steps? Delays in people's PR processing and refusals don't care about your feelings or your imagination of one's response as being harsh. Just right on top of the two of yous convo, are people talking about VOs and how they can be reading but you think we will be here to sweet talk and pet your fraudulent ways? Don't hurt/delay or attract extra unnecessary scrutiny to my application.
I'm trying to make a fight and you fell for it? Solomon.
Continue to be as honest as you can, but at the same time learn to be polite. There is no need for insults (your quote "knock into your thick head). It is uncalled for. We must learn to respect one another please.

Please don't reign insults on me, I don't have energy to reply insults. Am a peace loving person. Note that am just trying to be my brother's keeper.

As for the OP, kindly find ways of sorting your issues. Although it may not be my business, but try to iron things out with your dad (aside from your POF issue), life is so short. Don't wait until it is too late. Wishing you all the best.

I have applied to the banks already and it takes a fews day for the bank(s), more than 1 bank, to execute. Unfortunately, Monday and Tuesday has been declared as public holidays and I am a bit worried of not getting the required letter before my deadline
If you have an evidence to show that you've applied to the banks for the ref letters, you can raise a CSE, attach the evidence and any form of document (newspaper scan, internet link or related) confirming that Mon & Tues are public holidays in Nigeria. Request for more time to be able to process the letters.

If you have no any form of evidence that you've applied, still go ahead and raise CSE. It is better than not doing anything.

Do you have any idea why they requested for a new bank letter?

@Enajegbe, their is no way to tell if your medicals has been extended or you need remedical. You have these options

1. Raise a web form asking if you need to redo medicals or is it extended?

2. Raise GCMS and check the categorisation of your medicals. Their is a category that is often (not always) given 6 months extension after expiry. Their is the other category that will surely need to redo medicals before issuing ppr.

3. Just go ahead and do new medical, raise CSE and attach evidence of new medicals

4. Stay put, be patient and wait for IRCC to direct you on next line of action (which could be PPR).

If I was in your shoes, I will stick to option 4, when I get really tired and disturbed I will opt for option 3.

BTW Option 1 is the least reliable option.

Wishing you all the best.

Hi Heph, congratulations on the progress you've made so far. Don't feel frustrated,
your security check should be over anytime soon. Luckily for you, your file is in a VO that is recognised to be "active" not "slow". I blv this covid situation is contributing to the longevity of your security check. I've read on canadavisa that the time taken from clearing security check to ppr is normally weeks (or even days for some lucky ones). So, hang in there, you will get the long awaited email as soon as ircc starts sending out pprs.

Probably you've lived in numerous countries before, I learnt that having multiple pcc's (say >2) also prolong security check. Nonetheless, congratulations. Your application has made very good progress.
