Christianity EtcChurch Refuses Black Couple by tyson55(op): 9:39pm On Jul 29, 2012
They had booked their wedding far in advance. The invitations had been sent, the programs printed. But one day before Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson were to be married at the Mississippi church they frequented, they said a pastor told them they would have to find another venue -- because they were black.

There has never been a black wedding at the First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs, Miss., since its founding in 1883. According to Pastor Stan Weatherford, some church members objected so strongly to breaking that precedent, they threatened to oust him from his pastorship.

Rather than risk his job, Weatherford, who is white, said he decided to marry the pair at a black church down the road.
"My 9-year-old was going to the church with us. How would you say to your 9-year-old daughter, 'We cannot get married here because, guess what sweetie, we're black,'" Charles Wilson told ABC's affiliate WAPT-TV.

Outrage over the wedding's forced relocation swept the Jackson suburb of about 5,000 into a media firestorm.
The vast majority of Crystal Springs residents, blacks and whites alike, were "blown away" by the church's decision, said Theresa Norwood, 48, who was born in Crystal Springs and has lived there her entire life.

Norwood said she believes Weatherford should have married the Wilsons regardless of the risk to his job.
"That church was their home," she said. "What would Jesus have done? He would have married them, without a doubt, because it's the right thing to do. We're all God's children."

While the Wilsons were not members of the church, they often attended services there, and Te'Andrea's uncle is an employee of the church, and her father is a member. Charles Wilson told WAPT that the couple had planned to join as members after their wedding, which was held July 20.

Weatherford told WLBT-TV in Jackson that he would have liked to marry the couple as planned, but he decided to perform the ceremony elsewhere as a compromise to ensure that the Wilsons could be married while "addressing a need within our congregation."

Norwood, who is black, said her nephew came to worship at First Baptist Church while he was temporarily living with her, having been evacuated from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The church "made him feel at home," she said, but now she wonders whether he would return there when he visits Crystal Springs.

The church is now holding internal meetings to figure out how it should respond to future requests by black couples to be married there, Weatherford told WLBT-TV.
For her part, though, Norwood, who is dating a white man, said that if she and her boyfriend decide to get married, they will likely look for a different venue.

PoliticsNigeria: Obasanjo, IBB Call For Talks With Insurgents by tyson55(op): 8:46pm On Jul 29, 2012
Two former Nigerian leaders issued a rare joint statement on Sunday calling for talks to end a deadly insurgency by Islamist group Boko Haram, warning the violence could put the nation’s unity at risk.

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, who have been rivals in the past, said in the statement that the killings had become “unbearable” and had led to a nation “gripped by a regime of fear”.

“Unfolding events in our dear motherland, Nigeria, over the last few years are threatening to unravel the nearly a century old labour of our founding fathers and subsequent generations in building a strong, united, peaceful nation …,” the statement said.

Without mentioning Boko Haram by name, they called for “community involvement” in addition to security measures to resolve the crisis, urging efforts from local governments, religious leaders and grassroots organisations.

“Religious leaders, in particular, have an even greater challenge to use the immense virtues of this holy period (Ramadan) to inculcate among the millions of citizens the spirit of mutual respect, humility and forgiveness,” the statement said.
“Ample opportunities are therefore at hand to bring all armed belligerents to table for meaningful dialogue with the authorities for our future and that of our children and grandchildren.”

The statement also said that “for us, and we believe for millions of other Nigerians, the continued unity of this nation is not only priceless but non-negotiable.”

Boko Haram’s insurgency has left hundreds dead since mid-2009. Its attacks have grown increasingly deadly and sophisticated, moving from drive-by shootings to homemade explosives and suicide bombings.

The insurgency has been focused in the mainly Muslim north of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and largest oil producer. The 160 million population is roughly divided between a mostly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.

While Muslims have often been the victims of Boko Haram attacks, recent violence specifically targeting churches has raised fears of reprisals and wider conflict.
Obasanjo, president from 1999 to 2007, is a Christian from the country’s southwest, while Babangida, who ruled from 1985-1993, is a Muslim from central Nigeria.

This will be the Somalia scenario when the old dictator was toppled by the people with similar tactics and using light arms. A well place anti-tank mine or IED can destroy most Russian tanks and BDRMs. More can fall to SA-7's and RPG's. Slowly and surely the regime will start to lose this equipment faster than it can be replaced. Those helo gunships will fall to Stinger missiles of the type the Americans provided the Mujaheddin in Afghanistan many years ago. Many of them from that conflict were never accounted for. Even suitcase nukes have leaked out of Russia during the time of troubles in the nineties and that fact was probably covered up. This will be the meanest, most merciless and animalistic bloodfeast ever seen since the World War. No one will be safe. There are no fronts and no back areas immune from damage from either side.

If this ends good for Assad I'll be shocked.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)John Terry Cleared Of Racism Against Anton Ferdinand by tyson55(op): 2:34pm On Jul 13, 2012
Ex-England captain John Terry has been cleared of racially abusing fellow footballer Anton Ferdinand.

The Chelsea and England defender had denied making the comments to the Queen Park Rangers player during a match at Loftus Road last October.

The 31-year-old told Westminster Magistrates' Court that he had repeated what he thought Mr Ferdinand had said to him as the pair traded insults.

Mr Terry had described himself as "angry and upset" over the claims.

It was alleged he had insulted Mr Ferdinand in a match between Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers, describing him as "black" and using extreme sexual swear words.

But Chief Magistrate Howard Riddle said he had heard a great deal of evidence to show Mr Terry was not a racist.

PoliticsPresident Jonathan Summons Security Chiefs by tyson55(op): 1:47pm On Jul 10, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday presided over an emergency session with security chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The security challenges, especially the Plateau State’s weekend bloodbath which claimed more than 100 lives, was top on the agenda.

Senator Gyang Dantong and the Majority Leader of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Gyang Fulani, died on Sunday when unknown gunmen stormed a mass burial at which they were present.

At the end of the over three hours meeting, the security chiefs shunned reporters. The reporters wanted to know the decisions reached on states, such as Niger, Plateau, Yobe and Borno where the government declared emergency rule last year.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Oluseyi Petinrin, referred reporters to the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.)

Col. Dasuki, who came out about 10 minutes after other security chiefs had left, declined comments. He referred reporters to Air Chief Marshall Petinrin for comments.

Col. Dasuki said: “Is that what the CDS said (that I am the one to talk)? Ok. I am now saying ‘go back to the CDS.’”

When told that the CDS had left the State House, he kept quiet.

When asked about the Jos killings, the NSA replied: “Is that what happened? No, that was not what happened!” He then forced his way through the crowd of reporters. He jumped into his waiting car, with the aid of his security detail and drove off.

The NSA, about three weeks on the job, has been around the troubled states, including Plateau State.

At the meeting were Col. Dasuki, Air Chief Marshal Petinrin; Minister of State, Defence, Mrs. Olusola Obada; Minister of Police Affairs Caleb Olubolade; Minister of Interior Mr. Abba Moro; Acting Inspector-General of Police Muhammed Abubakar; Chief of Army Staff Lt-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika; Chief of Naval Staff Vice-Admiral Ola Ibrahim; Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Mohammed Umar; and Director-General, State Security Service, Mr. Ita Ekpenyong.

PoliticsWe Will Recover Every Fund Looted Via Subsidy – Okonjo-iweala by tyson55(op): 1:51pm On Jul 08, 2012
The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said, yesterday, that the Federal Government would recover the excess payments made to petroleum marketers on subsidy, as soon as the Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede committee completes its assignment.

She revealed this after the second Prof. Barth Nnaji annual lecture at the Enugu State University of Technology, Enugu.

President Goodluck Jonathan established the Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede Committee, on Thursday, to reconcile the findings of the Technical Committee set up by the Federal Ministry of Finance to conduct a detailed review of all subsidy claims and payments made in 2011.

FamilyMan With 30 Kids From 11 Moms Wants Child Support Relief by tyson55(op): 9:24pm On Jul 04, 2012
You have to say this much for Desmond Hatchett: He has a way with the ladies.

The 33-year-old Knoxville, Tenn., resident has reportedly set a Knox County record for his ability to reproduce. He has 30 children with 11 women. And nine of those children were born in the last three years, after Hatchett — who is something of a local celebrity — vowed “I’m done!” in a 2009 TV interview, saying he wouldn’t father more children.

But Hatchett is back in the news this week because he’s struggling to make ends meet on his minimum-wage job. His inability to make child-support payments on such a meager salary also means he’s back in court again and again, most recently to ask for a break on those payments.

“Yes, we’ve got several cases with Mr. Hatchett,” Melissa Gibson, an assistant supervisor with the Knox County child support clerk’s office, said with a sigh.

Hatchett’s attorney, Keith Pope, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Under the law, there’s nothing officials can do to force Hatchett to keep his pants on.

“If there’s something out there like that, I’m unaware of it,” Gibson told The Times, before adding, “It definitely needs to be.”
