I have said it before and I will say it again. The only way to get anything out of our corrupt leaders is to use violence and threaten their cozy comfortable existence. They want to be left in peace to enjoy their ill gotten money and that is why they are trying to buy off Boko Haram, just like they bought off the Delta militants with amnesty. If only Nigerians can come together and start using the same tactics to demand regular power supply, better roads, hospitals and schools this country will change dramatically. Our leaders are not only thieves, they are also bloody cowards.

A 15-year-old Nigerian girl, Modupe Ellen Awoyemi, has been named in a list of 24 victims of the Friday, July 22, 2011 terror attack in Norway.

Awoyemi’s name appeared among those confirmed by the Norwegian police at the weekend during the tragic events which happened at Utoya and Oslo.

Although information about Awoyemi were sketchy as at press time, it was found that she was a resident of Drammen, a city in Buskerud County, Norway.

Already, a facebook page titled: Norway Victim - Modupe Ellen Awoyemi - Rip - 22.07.11 has been opened to accommodate condolences for Awoyemi for which scores of such have already poured in less than two days.

• Senators divided on law seeking their transfer to Nigerian prisons


Senators yesterday sang discordant tunes over the fate of about 16,400 Nigerians languishing in prisons across the United Kingdom (UK).

Some Senators wanted the National Assembly to pass a resolution which would compel the Federal Government to bring the prisoners back home as the UK Government spend £1.6m to feed the prisoners per day. Others countered that the nation’s economy cannot accomodate such influx.

This came up during the debate on a bill for an Act to repatriate Nigerian convicted prisoners serving various jail terms in the Common Wealth countries sponsored by Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN).

Senator Benedict Ayade told the Senate that “in the United Kingdom alone, Nigerians serving various prison term are 16, 4000 in number and it cost the UK government about 1.6 million pounds per day to feed them.”

Senate President David Mark expressed unhappiness at the number of Nigerians serving jail terms in the UK alone.

He said: “There are safeguards in the bill, but I am shocked to hear that there are 16,400 Nigerians in various prisons abroad, this is a thing not to be proud of, we don’t know the authenticity of the figure, but it calls for concern. The lesson is that we should improve our prisons for the purpose of reformation, it is not right to transfer the responsibility of reformation to other nations.”

Leading debate on the bill, which seeks to amend the transfer of convicted offenders (Enactment and Enforcement) Act, Senator Ndoma-Egba who sponsored the bill which was read for the first time on July 20, 2011 stated that the bill was to give effect to the Common Wealth scheme on convicted offenders between Common Wealth countries.

He added that the bill was seeking to amend the provisions of the extant Act by removing the consent and verification procedure of returning convicted prisoners to serve their term in Nigeria.

Ndome-Egba noted that the present Act is replete with some deficiencies that if not adequately addressed would jeopardize its execution, adding that it was the recognition of the inherent shortcomings in the extant Act that necessitated the need to amend it.

To effectively streamline the law, the Senate Leader insisted that Sub-section 5(1)(d) and Section 8 of the Nigeria Constitution, seeking the consent of the convicted offender and which has to do with the consent and verification of the convicted offender of the principal Act were to be amended respectively.

Senators opposed to the bill insisted that the financial implication of transferring prisoners back home would be too much for the country to shoulder. They also said that apart from the action being an infringement of fundamental human right of an individual, they also said that nobody would be convicted abroad especially the UK and would like to serve his jail term in Nigeria even if it was just a week.

The bill was however referred to Committee on Judiciary, Human Right and Legal Matter when constituted.

What was the job of succeeding National security advisers, Inspector generals of police, Ministers of defence, Interior ministers, Directors of SSS and other security agencies? What were they doing when this deadly satanic sect were recruiting, training and purchasing dangerous arms and ammunitions under their noses. Were they sleeping or busy stealing public money that they forgot they were getting paid to secure us.Wahalahi, it is plainly a failure of Intelligence! My fear for Nigeria is that we don't even seem to understand that WE ARE NOW A COUNTRY AT WAR! Boko whatever they are called has declared war on the federal republic of Nigeria. Like the United States, we are now fighting terrorism. The fight against terror redefined George Bush presidency. His eight years were spent chasing al-Qaida anywhere they were or perceived to be. The cost was enormous; billions of dollars, corpes of young men and women serving in Afghanistan and Iraq were daily brought home from the war front. A lot of restructuring took place and America has become a country where every hand is on deck to report any suspicious movement or action. Everyone is a stake holder in the fight against terror. When asked if America is now safe, Condoleeza Rice, the then national security adviser could only say that America is now safer. If the fight against terrorism is that daunting for the United States, we can imagine what we have on our plate. It is getting clearer that Boko Harram has ties with the notorious al-Qaida. Now that they have declared that Aso Rock is their number 1 target, we should now that this touts are hell bent on destroying the nation. If not for the timely interception and vigilance of some men of the Nigeria army penultimate Saturday,Boko Haram could again have succeeded in taking about 700 explosives into Abuja to do what they know how to do best. Sad enough, our intelligence has to be right 100 percent of times,Boko Haram has to be right only once.

Recently the names of some former governors of Borno, Gombe and Bauchi have been linked with dealing with this sect at one time or the other. They should be quizzed to know more about the sect, what they stand for, who are the sponsor and masterminds. Of course terrorist always have God fathers, money bag that do the finances. All the recognized accounts of the members and their sponsors must be frozen to incapacitate their finances. This is not the time to siddon look. Neither is this a time to play party antics. The president and his security council should treat this as a national emergency. The national assembly must approve extra funds to tackle Boko Harram if need be. Our intelligence agencies must be restructured and be well coordinated. America responded with the ministry of Homeland Security.

The buck should stop at somebody's table. I am not a security expert, but I think the Security Council should have a position, ether to negotiate with the terrorist group or go all out to rout them. Whatever is the government's position, we need to act fast. The general public by now should be given a security number to call if anyone has vital information, even promises of monetary reward is not out of place. Everybody must be vigilant. These are not the times to sleep like the dead. We have to be conscious of strange men and things around us. Suscpicion is allowed in emergencies like this. The solution to Boko Haram is simple - first President Jonathan must fire IGP Ringim for failing to secure Nigerians; then he should contract out the operations to the United States government and let the Marines come in and clean house. Icheoku thinks Iran is supplying Boko Haram their weapons and that the not too long ago Iranian weapons seized in Lagos ports were destined for Boko Haram in Maiduguri. Moreso may be it is about time the current National Security Adviser is replaced and the president bring back General Muktar who seems to understand the language of violence better - OBJ's mantra of fire for fire. what these Muslim lunatic Boko Haram group deserves and desires is an Odi or Zaki Ibiam treatment. Anything short is kid's gloves and they think the government is not serious. Maitasine sect was once dealt with summarily and that is exactly what these Islamic beasts need. But regrettably, President Jonathan lacks the raw guts needed to put an end to this nightmare on Maiduguri Streets. Trace their weapon source to see if this menace is the threatened "Nigeria being ungovernable should Jonathan win" which Adamu Ciroma's Elders Forum made before the election. Meanwhile where is the Emir of Bornu on this? What about Sultan of Sokoto, IBB, Atiku and other supposed northern Nigeria leaders speaking out. In hushed tones and silent whispers to high pitched decibels, information filtering in from every angle surmises the concluding stages of the appointment of the erstwhile columnist and chairman of the editorial board of the Guardian newspaper Mr Reuben Abati. Reliable sources indicate that the former columnist is gearing up to assume his new position as the mouthpiece of Mr Jonathan's new administration. I am however at a loss whether to wish Abati well or to use this piece as a subtle warning to him for choosing to pitch his political tent with this administration.

Reuben for many years had stayed the course as a prolific and dexterous writer, highlighting the ills of society caused by successive governments and oftentimes appearing to take sides with the proletariats and the forgotten segment of society. He no doubt mesmerised us with his weekly columns on Fridays and Sundays; a space he so judiciously utilised to bring the attention of the nation to pivotal issues. His captivating and often well researched articles made reading his pieces a delight. He made the pen mightier than the sword and brought enlightenment into our homes. Abati in his own way fought successive governments not by political protests or strikes neither by instigating violence nor through arm struggle. He fought with his words, his analysis and his convictions. Abati brought realism through his thoughts that are meticulously laid out paragraph by paragraph. He awakened our consciousness to the splurge and extravagance of high office holders. Through his pen he highlighted the plights of ordinary Nigerians and the anomaly called Nigeria. Reuben indeed brought some sort of panache to Nigerian journalism.

Reuben could not be more critical than during the emperor's reign Mr Obasanjo, he lambasted and chided the Obasanjo administration at every opportunity. He wrote metaphorically, paradoxically and satirically throughout the long reign of the emperor. Abati through his columns represented an idealism that had died out or dying out in Nigeria; the idealism of enthroning dignity and honour above gain and aggrandisement. His critical evaluation of issues militating against the progress of a people that have been deprived and robbed by their own leaders; was a breath of fresh air to the many millions of Nigerians hoping someday for a permanent end to the gnawing poverty and utmost deprivation inflicted by a fragment of society occupying the upper echelons of power. Abati opposed through his articles corrupt officials and bad leadership models. He accentuated his belief in quality and participatory democracy. He campaigned for an egalitarian society that every Nigerian could and should be proud of. Abati endeared many readers to the Guardian newspaper because of his no- holds- barred comments and fearless analysis of nagging issues. His vituperation and opprobrium on leadership profligacy and ostentation elevated his status among the suffering masses strewn across the length and breadth of Nigeria as a crusader and upholder of justice and equity.

Abati's new position however portends grave concern for many observers that have followed him through his writings and columns over the years. I thought this man upheld certain philosophies in life that made him different from the regular Joe seeking to eke-out a living. Through his analyses these many years I thought he was a different breed with verve and vim for rationality and ethicality. Abati has closed ranks with the very people he criticised. He is now a political player in the murky waters of Nigerian politics. He is become a mouth piece to excuse inanity and perfunctory styles and systems of governance. Reuben no longer will seek the interest of the downtrodden and the oppressed of society. Abati's decision to be the mouthpiece for Jonathan's administration in my opinion is belittling and uncomplimentary to his past performances as an ace writer and intelligent columnist. Abati's new position I believe, will render him a pariah at the expiration of four years. His career as a journalist after this administration will never command the kind of followership and adoration he presently enjoys. Abati has chosen the wrong crowd to mingle with. He has chosen to swim in a politically shark infested waters; one only hopes he does not get badly bitten.

Perhaps Reuben needs be reminded of some of his predecessors that have made the same leap as he is determined to make. Each of those government mouthpieces always leave with their image either in tatters or just hanging by the teeth of their skin. Segun Adeniyi's experience in the just concluded administration will be a perfect apposite for Reuben's new penchant. Segun was caught in a moral dilemma when high level perfidy, intrigue and treachery began to play out at the height of Yar'A dua's government. Segun became a stooge for government; he had to save face by leaving the country for further studies. Segun's high sounding moral after his stint with the last government is simply medicine after death.

Perhaps Mr Reuben's inclusion in this administration could signal a new dawn for this political dispensation. Abati's perspicuity and erudition as a political commentator could come to the fore in engineering this administration towards creating political and social Eldorado for the countless Nigerians living in absolute abjection and petrifying squalor. One is also not ignorant of the fact that political commentaries are not tantamount to political achievements. Will Reuben create the needed rapprochement between the people and the state? Will he explain away frivolities and incompetence? Only time will tell.

Every man's price is simply determined by what is at stake I suppose for Reuben it is becoming a mouthpiece for the Jonathan administration. I cannot wait to see Ruben's justification and explanation of government failures and philistinism when it starts to play out. As it is often said "He who pays the piper must determine the tune".

I realise that every single individual in life desires to make progress and leave their mark in the annals of history but also important is how we choose to meet that end. How Reuben chooses to make progress and put himself in the chronicling of history is entirely Reuben's choice. One thing is certain, a large segment of society will miss his columns that he had for many years captivated us with. With Reuben moving on with his new assignment one can only hope that at the end of four years our man would have so changed this administration that he himself will not become the victim of his own vituperations and captiousness.
