I just saw this topic. Really sounds interesting. Thanks to the amended constitution of last year, labour issues are better dealt with now. I just wonder why people do not seem interest in this area but u hear people complain daily of being victimized in the work place. Companies thrive of the ignorance of their employees and when faced with a law-suit from a bold person, they are quick to initiate out of court settlement in the interest of their image. |
@BB, I understand your anger oh. Its really annoying but this is Nigeria for you and our over adherence to useless customs and traditions. The truth is that young men need to start standing up and take a stand on issues in their family way before the issue of marriage arises. My father told us of how when his people fought him when he got born-again. he refused to comply with some native traditions and was almost treated like an outlaw (adherence to tradition was even worse during his time oh). He said the town union people refused to attend his wedding but they were not missed as his fellowship brethren in uni and his xtian friends more than made up for their absence. But the truth is that he became known for his stand on issues to the extent that when my elder sis did her wedding, they removed everything on the list related to alcohol and other native rites as they knew he would never comply. As it stands, my fear is that this poor girl may end up having the mum's story as the date of the trad wedding has been cancelled. She has left her mum's house and she is heavily pregnant. She stands the risk of living with the man without being married all in the name of issues should be resolved first and then the babies start popping and before you know, no wedding is conducted. |
Thank you to every person who contributed here. @fhemmy, Heavy in this context means she is pregnant. @ ifyalways, You know, in as much as couples are usually adviced to make their own decision and be firm about it, there are issues that tend to be way out of their hand. We are still very cultural in this country and we have to respect some norms and traditions i think even if just for the sake of peace and the future. I believe that it is the white wedding that a couple has so much influence over any decision they take as to venue, etc. However, it is not so easy when it has to do with traditional wedding. This is the reason why in most cases where even the father does not want to be involved in the child's wedding due to sepeartion, an uncle in the family represents him. @MBJ, Yea i know it is the daughter's day but i feel the mum's pain so much. Why is he the father all of a sudden acting all concerned about the daughter's life. He never cared about the children. It does not matter if he never cared for their mum but at least his kids. This was a man that left immediately she gave birth to the third child who happened to be a girl all in the name of the woman only having girls for him. That is not the main issue now so i am not even delving into it now. But you know, this woman had to drop 2 of her girls for a while at the SOS Village because she was ill and she could not cope with the responsibilities as at then. I was talking to a lady just the other day whose father sent her and her two daughters packing but who once in a while after so much bickering sends them money for their fees. At a point she said that she would stop collecting and rely on God to raise her kids. I told her to collect any money or anything he sends to her as it is not a favour but his responsibility. I also reminded her that in the future after all her suffering, the man may come back apologizing bla bla and its still people that would advice the kids to forgive "after all, he is still your father". She would now be the one at the losing side. Nonsense. @CC, You are correct oh. If the girl insists on her mother's people performing the marriage rites, she may be the subject of ridicule. This is not just the issue of venue but the family that would handle everything from the giving of list to collecting the bride price. Tradition is so annoying. In the future, her in-laws if they happen to be bad people would taunt her and remind her of how she has no roots and no family. It would even expose her family deficiency which i even feel should only be exposed to her husband. His people may not even recognize her and God forbid but what happens in the unlikely event of anything happening to her husband. It is terrible indeed!. This is why i advice the father's people to handle the ceremony but it should be done in Lagos as the idea of the mum hiring a canopy and doing her thing would not work in the village as the umuada would have a field day mocking her, gossiping and ridiculing her and her strength may fail her once again. Thank you everyone. |
Good people of the family section, please matured advice is needed here. My cousin's mum, never got married. She cohabited with a man for about 14 years without the man performing any marriage rites on her. They just "assumed" they were married until the man woke up 14 years later after 3 girls and walked out of the marriage. He went ahead to marry another woman (did all the necessary ceremonies even church wedding). My aunt was disillusioned, she was not working and the task of raising these kids rested o her shoulders. She had high pressure with other sickness and it was only by the mercy of God that she is still alive today. This all happened a couple of years back. The issue at hand now is that the first daughter is set to marry. According to the culture of the woman, since the man never married the mother, the kids automatically belong to the woman's family. However, the reverse is the case where the daughter's fiance comes from. His people are insisting that the wedding be done in her father's place as doing it in her mum's place carries the implication that she is a bastard with no roots. Her father is ready to do arrange the traditional wedding in his place but her mum is considerably livid. If the wedding is done in the father's place, the mum cannot attend since she is not recognized there so the mum is so angry as to why the father is now all of a sudden showing up after so many years. He never paid the moneys social welfare asked him to pay for the upkeep of the kids years back and she really had to struggle to raise them. The daughter on the other hand is caught between both parents who are now hurling insults at each other. Meanwhile, she is heavy and her bp is high at the moment. Her mum is so bitter with her to the extent that they had a huge disagreement which made the girl pack and leave the house to an undisclosed address as the mum further called her fiancee to curse him if her ever thinks of housing her daughter without marriage. Though i seek the advice of matured people here, my own suggestion however is this. She should talk to the mum, reassure her of the fact that she loves her and appreciates her role in her life. Further explain to her that doing the wedding in her dad's place is just a matter of fulfilling obligations blablabla. Soothe her and play on her emotions and she would relax. Better still, the trad should be done in lag and with that no body can stop her from attending though its still the dad's people who would handle everything. Your suggestions are highly welcome. |
@Quart, get a lawyer and sue the company. Thankfully, we now have an improved National Industrial Court which specializes in labour matters and they are seriously looking for cases to undertake. |
I got the inspiration to post this topic when someone told me just the other day about a friend who was offered employment on the condition that she would put in at least five years in the company before thinking of resigning. All this had to be in writing so as to make it "binding" on both parties. I also heard about a chairman of a company who made his top management staff sign an agreement that if they ever think of leaving his company, for 10 years, they would not venture into the kind of business he does. The question that begs for an answer is how legal are these agreements. In short, how legal are the many clauses included in a contract of employment which we hurriedly sign. This is terrible because most job seekers who are desperate just sign this offer letters without actually taking time to study them. However, i n the cases whereby an employee signs erroneous agreements, how binding is it on him in the event of an occasion arising. Also, we see situations where an employee is cheated or where an employer does not keep to the terms as provided in the labour Act and as usual many people suffer untold hardships since they lack sufficient knowledge in this area. I would like to address questions connected to employer/employee relationships. The laws governing same, which court has the jurisdiction to address issues of this kind, how to seek redress when cheated etc. If you have any issue, we can deal with it here together. We could offer solutions, advice, suggestions etc. We would not be emotional but we would use the instrumentality of the law in proffering solutions in this regard. Caveat- This is not restricted to the complains of an employee but also works vice-versa. An employee also has obligations he needs to fulfill so employers of labour are also welcome to this thread .Hope people get interested in this. |
Hello everyone. How are we holding on? .@Babs2011, thank you so much for that information, @Modath, wow! That was highly educating. Geez, the kind of things you learn in this our pursuit to healthier living eh. I used to think before now that loosing weight was just all about eating right and exercising. It is a study on its own oh, what with all the things you learn like adding weight during TOM only for you to loose the water retention thereafter etc. I have learnt a lot and i am still learning everyday mostly from personal observation sef. @HG, Pele oh Auntie mi. Trust you are well rested oh. Oya back to our level 3 kia kia. Am i teh only one that loves level 3 absolutely, unlike that wicked level 2 . Jilian kpa kpa said there that she wants us to feel like we are about to die @Mightlove, Thank God oh, I thought i was the only one in that boat. Now i know better. I got to go hide my scale sharp sharp and get my measuring tape .Log Day 2, level 3 JM |

@Hour-glass I'm here ma . Yes oh, I started level 3 yesterday and was so happy. Level 2 is actually a killer mhen.@Modath, Thank God for that mighty deliverance oh. It is well. Greetings to mighty-love, ronky, babs2011 and the rest of the crew. Such strong motivation i tell you. I have made one crazy observation. When i strength train, i usually feel lighter but the scale tilts forward. If i have like a three day period when i do not work out and maybe indulge, the scale then drops. I wonder if the drop is due to the loss of the muscles being built. Abeg experts help me oh. |
@ Modath- Ha . Trust me, i tried those quick fixes fad diets lots of times and it is certainly not worth it. |
Thanks Babs and HG. I actually eat healthy with my meals consisting of lots of veggies and fruits with at least one carb meal on some days. The cake was my birthday cake actually . So i had to enjoy without guilt but did not go over board. ![]() |
Thank you so much HG. Yes oh, many more maintainenace years ahead. GenBuhari- Thanks a whole lot too. Had some cake yesterday. Told myself that i am not under bondage jo . This is a life style change and i am not aiming to loose weight for any special occassion so if i can afford to have little cake and then continue with my healthy eating. Please was i wrong here? . |
Amen oh Mighty-Love. Thank you so so much. @Babs Thanks a million too. |

I so love the month of March too. Guess its because its my month too .@Ronky where u dey. Abeg oh, i love your consistent workouts. Exercise log Day 2 level 2 JM 30 day shred. ( i honestly believe level 2 is the hardest in this dvd oh) |
@Ronke, 1000 skips is very doable oh. I started with jump rope when i did not have any work out dvd and going to the gym everyday was an impossible feat so i just skipped away. I started with 100 skips five times making 500 and it just got easier.@Mightlove, thanks oh. The change is awesome. I so wish i can share pictures cos i believe i have slashed half of my body .@HG, Mighty congrats oh. You sure one of my many inspirations. If you see the way i am hungry for any information that pertains to weight loss eh! its amazing @all, please congratulate me oh. This is my 6th month of abandoning soft drink totally . Not even tasted the thing sef and i am so not interested . The funny part is that there is no urge for it at all though there is free food and drink for lunch at work. The best part of this journey is how our body adjusts with time and all the cravings gradually leave us except at that time of the month. I used to be a kfc chicken fan and everybody in the office knew me for it. When i started this journey, i told myself that when i get to 68kg, i would treat myself to it. I got to 68, went past it and am 64kg at present and still have not bought it because there really is no urge for it. Sounds weird though |
He can not sue in his own capacity because it is not a personal wrong doing or grievance. Anyway watch out and see as the events unfold. Maybe you would understand better then. |
Thought i had already explained that well. He cannot sue the CBN because he lacks the right to sue on behalf of everybody as it is not only his interest that is at stake. Simple!. |
OMG!!! this is so sad. Chuks why did you have to go this way. You were so hardworking with a bright future. You always wanted to live to see sanity return to our land. Goodbye |
The term locus standi actually denotes the legal right of a person to institute proceedings in a court of law. The fundamental reason why locus standi is of utmost importance is underscored by section 6(6) CFRN which states thus: “The judicial powers vested in the courts established under the constitution shall extend: ‘to all matters between persons, or between government or authority and any person in Nigeria, and to all actions and proceedings relating thereto, for the determination of any question as to the civil rights and obligations of that person”. This principle was further laid out in a very popular case involving Senator Adesanya v. the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria where the Supreme Court further buttressed this principle and also held thus: “……What this therefore means is that a litigant must show that the act of which he complains affects rights and obligations peculiar or personal to him. He must show that his private rights have been infringed or injured or that there is a threat to such infringement or injury”. In cases involving public law litigations, an ordinary individual does not have locus standi. The reason is that such litigations involve public rights and duties which belong to or are owed to all members of the public including the plaintiff. It is only where he has suffered special damage over and above that suffered by the public generally that he can sue personally. (Fidelis Nwadialo – civil procedure in Nigeria). The implication of the foregoing is that it is only the Attorney-General of the State or the Federation that can sustain this kind of suit. Another rationale behind this principle more so as it affects public litigation is that if every individual has the locus standi to just approach the court and sue the government on any matter, it would mean that the only job the government would be able to carry on would only be court-related as there would be multiplicity of suits and any individual would be able to sue the government on any frivolous matter. Late Chief Gani Fawehnmi had most of his matters struck out in court because of this very principle. However, things turned around when he became an SAN. As an erudite lawyer that he was, he was able to convince the court that since he swore to protect the sanctity of the constitution as an individual during his swearing in as an SAN, he can sue anybody including the government whose action contravenes any section of the constitution and the court agreed with him. |
He can not sue as a citizen. The case would be dismissed immediately and he knows it sef. I would try to do a short note on locus standi in order to educate everyone of its importance in instituting an action. |
Hi all, Thanks Hour-glass for that inspiring piece. At times it gets tiring jo and we just can not get to lacing our bots and wearing our work-out wear especially when we seem to have reached a plateau. @Modath I tried Jillian's BFBM about twice but i did not really enjoy it cos it was so tasking esp after doing the 30 day shred. log for yesterday 1,000 skips, 50 bicep curls with dumbbells, 50 squats with dumb bells, 150 of other strength training exercises with dumb bells( don't know their names). Isn't it just awesome when people who know us keep saying stuff like " you have lost half of your body". "what did you do, please give me tips" and you get to give that very fake smile without saying a word .Just the other day i went to see a branch manager who i am so familiar with in respect of one of the bank's cases. The man was so cold and officious and i was wondering why. As i was about to leave, he said "Ehen there is one , (called my name) who usually comes here in respect of this case, how is she?". I just smiled and said she is fine and standing in front of you. With his mouth wide open, he was amazed beyond reason and started the usual bla bla bla, what happened to u talk . |
Annoying attention seeking lawyer. Even a law school student knows that this case is dead on arrival . How can he establish that he has locus-standi to institute the case in the first instance. |
Pls i indicated interest a while back but i have not gotten the account details yet. Thanks. |
Thank you so much hour-glass and Modath. Was just worried cos this change just occured during this period of loosing weight. Would try the recommended exercises. Log Day 5 level 1 of Jm 30 day shred. |
I am in please. |
Hello everyone, hope we all had beautiful weekends. Mhen, back to JM 30 day shred level 1, i actually thought that after completing the level 3 that level 1 would be so easy but i was so wrong. I still sweated terribly during the work out. Meanwhile ladies pls i need a lil bit of advice oh. I lost weight in my bust and it is beginning to sag a bit though i always used sports bra for my exercises . Please what exercises are recommended to firm the bust biko. |
Yeah, whenever i get to court or visit the prision and get to see the inmates, my heart always reaches out to them. I always feel pained at the condition in which their environment is. It is sad to be in court and see your fellow human being being sentenced to death or to some years in prison. However i feel so angry right now. These bandits never have mercy when they are operating on their victims save the innocent ones who happen to sufffer for crimes they did not commit. Just imagine me being robbed this morning on my way to work by three of them . It is both so painful and deeply traumatising but i thank God for everything. To the robbers, may God have mercy on you!. |
Hello everyone. Trust we all had a great weekend. Exercise for yesterday Billy blanks Taebo(cardio)- 40 mins |
In Nigeria, if you want to serve a notice on a person that can not be found that is a legal process, you have to go to court, file what is called a motion for substituted means giving reasons why personal service is not possible. The judge grants the motion and you could then paste it at the last known addy of d person,go with the court bailiff, take a pix and file proof of service. If you do not know the last known addy, then u request through the motion to service in a national daily. |
