First Lady Patience Jonathan says she will assist the women of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in realising their dream for peace and the liberation of their country.

Jonathan made the pledge in Abuja on Tuesday at a dinner she hosted for her counterpart from SADR, Hajiya Khadija Hamdi.

According to her, women need to rise up and fight for peace on the continent.

``Many countries in Africa, including Libya and Sudan, have been plagued by conflicts, so women need to rise and be united to fight for peace on the continent.

``When I heard about the Saharawi women, I was eager to meet them. I promise that we will work together to achieve peace and liberation for the Saharawi people.''

The SADR, regarded as Africa's last colony, is being claimed by Morocco.

Spain, which colonised the territory then known as Western Sahara, withdrew from it in 1976.

Earlier, Hamdi, who spoke through Mr Oubi Bachier, the country's ambassador, thanked Nigeria for its role in her people's struggle for liberation.

``We have held conferences in Europe and other countries, but tomorrow's conference is the first that will be held on the matter in Africa.''

An international conference on Western Sahara is scheduled to hold in Abuja on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the First Lady on Tuesday held a technical session with members of the steering committee of the African First Ladies Peace Mission.

Speaking at the occasion, she said that the issues raised by the sub-committees would be ``properly addressed''.

The First Lady used the occasion to sue for peace in Nigeria.

``Let us patronise Nigeria, embrace peace and project our country in good light, so as to make our people proud.

``Let us live up to the expectations of foreigners that respect us and value our opinions,'' she pleaded.
