The World Health Organization on Thursday said that more than 400 people have died from yellow fever in Africa and over 3,000 cases reported in Angola. Few more cases have also been reported in Kenya and China (carried by travellers). However, Uganda has had 30 cases and witnessed seven deaths. WHO also said "Seven countries (Brazil, Chad, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Peru and Uganda) are currently reporting yellow fever outbreaks or sporadic cases not linked to the Angolan outbreak,". WHO and other groups are trying to help Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo fight worsening outbreaks of the deadly virus. However, they say it will be difficult to control the spread of the virus. "As the borders are porous with substantial cross border social and economic activities, further transmission cannot be excluded," they said. Yellow fever is carried by mosquitoes which can be mild. It's a relative of dengue, Zika and chikungunya but is far deadlier. Symptoms include fever, headache, jaundice, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. It can also cause similar bleeding symptoms. Read more at www.ihealthng.com/2016/06/yellow-fever-death-toll-passes-400-in.html?m=1 |
Breastfeeding according to new research helps to improve the long-term heart structure and function for preterm infants. Research also suggested that breastfeeding helps reduced risk of asthma, childhood obesity, childhood leukemia, eczema, and ear infections in infants. The team of researchers (Dr. Adam Lewandowski, of the Cardiovascular Clinical Research Facility at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and colleagues), enrolled 102 adults in their early to mid-20s who, since birth, had been part of an earlier study that assessed how different infant feeding practices influenced health and later enrolled another 102 adults within the same age bracket who were born at full term for comparison. The researchers found that adults who had been born preterm had poor heart function and reduced heart volume, compared to those who had been born at full term. They also found out that preterm adults who had exclusive breastfeeding as an infant had better heart volume and function than those who had formula-feeding. Liberia has been declared Ebola free by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the fourth time since the epidemic began in December 2013. This declaration came 42 days after tests showed no trace of the virus on the last infected person. However, Liberia will now enters a 90-day surveillance period. Liberia was first declared Ebola free on 9th May 2015, with new cases re-emerging. The most recent flare-up was traced to a woman who had been exposed to the virus in Guinea and travelled to Liberia with her children. Liberia has witnessed more than 10,600 cases and 4,808 Ebola deaths since it's first announcement in March, 2014. ihealthng..co.ke/2016/06/who-declare-liberia-ebola-free-for-4th.html?m=1 |

WHO defined female genital mutilation (FGM) as a procedure that involves partial or total removal of the female external genital or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Normally done between the age of 15–49 years by a traditional circumciser using a blade. They remove the clitoral hood and clitoral glans, the inner and outer labia and closure of the vulva. About thirty (30) countries which includes Africa, the Middle East, certain ethnic group in south America and Asia practice FGM. Also With the growing migration, many girls and women who live outside their country of origin may be at risk of being subjected to FGM in Europe, Australia and North America. It is estimated that more than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) and about 3 million girls are still at risk of undergoing female genital mutilation every year. Types of FGM Type I (Clitoridectomy): This involves the partial or total removal of the clitoris and/or its prepuce. Type II (Excision): In excision the clitoris and labia minora are totally/partially removed with or without excision of the labia majora. Type III (Infibulation): Also known as pharaonic type this procedure involves the narrowing the vaginal orifice with creation of a covering seal by cutting and appositioning the labia minora and/or labia majora, with or without removal of the clitoris. The appositioning of the wound edges consists of stitching or holding the cut areas together for a certain period of time to create the covering seal. A small opening is left for urine and menstrual blood to escape. This type of FGM is mostly practiced in Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan. Type IV: This type consists of all other procedures to the female Instruments for non-medical purposes, such as pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterization. NOTE: Around 90% of FGM cases include either Types I (clitoridectomy), II (excision) or IV and about 10% are Type III (infibulation). CONSEQUENCES OF FGM Consequences of FGM include: *.Severe pain *.Bleeding *.Shock *.Difficulty in urinating *.Infections *.Injury to genital tissue *.Death *.Pelvic infections *.Development of cysts, abscesses and genital ulcers. *.Infection of the reproductive system *.Stress disorder. *.Urinary and menstrual problems *.Infertility *.Defibulation and reinfibulation *.Painful sexual intercourse. *.Scar formation *.Vesicovaginal (The continuous discharge of urine into the vagina) development After sexual intercourse the male partner might also experience pain and complications. According to WHO women who had undergone FGM, had significantly increased risks for adverse events during childbirth, and has a negative effects on their newborn babies. WHO estimated in 2006 that an additional 10–20 babies die per 1,000 deliveries as a result of FGM. Culled from ihealthng..com/2016/06/effects-of-female-genital-mutilation-fgm.html |

When someone is bitten by mosquito, the affected place swells up and starts itching but most time the person does not understand the reason behind the swell and the itching around the affected area. NOTE: Mosquitoes (male & female) feed on nectar. Only the female mosquito feed on blood for protein for her egg production. Now the real reason for that is because while the mosquito draws blood with its proboscis, it also injects its own saliva, which contains an anticoagulant that prevents the blood from clotting around the proboscis after which the body sees the saliva as a foreign substance and thereafter create histamines (an organic nitrogenous compound involved in local immune responses) which make the blood vessels around the affected area to enlarge and create an itchy wheal or itchy bump. Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a skin condition, in which cell death causes the epidermis to separate from the dermis. It also affects the mucus membranes. SJS is usually a reaction to certain medications or due to infections and is more common in adults than in children with women at high risk. Symptoms Stevens-Johnson syndrome begins with a fever and flu-like symptoms, followed by a painful red or purple rash that looks burnt and Blisters on the skin, mouth, nose, and genitals. Other symptoms include: *.Facial swelling *.Hives *.Tongue swelling *.Skin pain *.Shedding of your skin *.Sore mouth and throat *.Fatigue *.Cough *.Burning eyes Causes of SJS SJS can be caused by medications such as allopurinol (Anti-gout), penicillin (Infection), barbiturates (sedative), Ibuprofen (anti-inflammatory), Sulfa drugs (Furosemide), azithromycin (antibiotics), Lamotrigine (anticonvulsant), Valproic acid (bipolar disorder), Naproxen (Anti-inflammatory), Cocaine, Amoxicillin (antibiotics), Erythromycin (antibiotics), Ginseng, Ciprofloxin (antibiotics), Carbamazepine (neuropathic pain, seizure), phenytoin (anti-seizure), Phenobarbital (antiepileptic), Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (antibiotics) and Radiation therapy. Infectious causes *.Otitis media *.Herpes *.pharyngitis *.Upper respiratory infections *.Epstein-Barr virus *.HIV *.Mycoplasma pneumoniae *.Hepatitis *.Cytomegalovirus infections. SJS risk factors *.Viral infections *.Weakened immune system *.Family history of SJS *.Gene (HLA-B 1502) common among Southeast Asians, Chinese and Indian descent. Treatment *In treating SJS the first thing to do is to stop the medication that might have caused it. *Replace fluids and nutrients: A significant amount of fluid have been lost from the body because of the skin loss. So therefore an SJS patent will probably be given fluid and nutrients for the body to stay hydrated and to rebuild the skin through a nasogastric tube *Eye care: Series of eye problem have been associated with SJS, so its important to visit an ophthalmologist. *Wound care: The dead skin will be carefully removed and a medicated dressing is placed over the affected areas. Prevention of SJS If have already been treated of SJS be careful so you don't get it again. *Know and avoid the drug that caused the SJS or any other drug like it. *inform your doctors you've had SJS. *Wear a medical alert bracelet. According to a new study, Ignoring a child's cries may result in better sleep for the infants and parents. The study which suggests a behavioral technique known as "graduated extinction" involves letting a baby cry until they fall asleep which leads to longer sleep duration for the child and their parents. The research was conducted as a randomized, controlled trial, which involved 43 infants aged 6-16 months and their parents (All infants had been experiencing night-time sleep problems from around the age of 6 months). The parents of 14 of the infants were required to use the graduated extinction method or Ferber method which involves ignoring a child's cries, checking on them only at specific times with increasing intervals. for 12 months. The idea is to teach the child to accept that nobody will come to their aid when they cry, which will reduce their crying and improve their sleep. The parents of 14 of the infants used a "gentler" technique called "bedtime fading" which involves gradually delaying a child's bedtime each night for 12 months. The idea is that this will make a child drowsier and more likely to fall asleep. The parents of the remaining 14 infants acted as controls and did not use any of the sleep behaviour interventions. However, the researchers found infants of parents who used the graduated extinction technique fell asleep an average of 13 minutes earlier each night than those in the control group, and they woke up less frequently during the night. Also the levels of cortisol from saliva samples of infants, proves that there were no significant differences in stress levels between the groups and there were also no significant differences between the groups for parental stress and mood. The Study was recently published in the journal Pediatrics. "It's natural for parents to worry about having their babies cry at bedtime," says Michael Gradisar Ph.D., an associate professor in the School of Psychology at Flinders University, Australia who is also a co-author of the study. "While it's well documented that sleep deprivation can cause family distress, including maternal depression, we're hoping these results will add another element to how parents view their responses and how they manage their own and their babies' sleep behaviour." The authors also noted that many parents remain concerned about using the graduated extinction technique, but their study showed the method is not harmful. Gradisar and colleagues say their findings suggest that graduated extinction and bedtime fading may be beneficial for infants and their parents, though further studies are required to confirm their results. "We hope parents of children 6-16 months can become more aware of bedtime fading which helps babies fall asleep at the start of the night. It may not resolve awakenings during the night so if a child is waking up several times a night, then there is now some more evidence that graduated extinction is a technique that may not be harmful to their child." Snoring is the resulting sound which may be soft or loud and unpleasant caused due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. Snoring increases as age increases. This was proven by an epidemiology study which stated that at least 30% of adults and perhaps as many as 50% of people in some demographics snore and one survey of 5,713 American residents identified habitual snoring in 24% of men and 13.8% of women, rising to 60% of men and 40% of women aged 60 to 65 years. And it is believed that snoring during sleep may be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea(OSA). Men are more likely to snore than women, and overweight people snore more often than others, Signs and symptoms *Sleep deprivation *Irritability *Daytime drowsiness *Decreased libido *Lack of focus. * Impairment of lifestyle It can also cause psychological and social damage to sufferers. And research have also revealed a positive correlation between loud snoring and risk of heart attack(about +34% chance) and stroke (about +67% chance) and Loud snoring have been associated with the development of carotid artery atherosclerosis. Snoring vibrations are transmitted to the carotid artery, which causes snoring-associated carotid artery damage and atherosclerotic plaque development, atherosclerotic plaque rupture and ischemic stroke . Causes of snoring Snoring is caused by the constriction of the airway which is due to the following: *.Throat weakness *.Obesity *.Sleep apnea *.The coming in contact of the tissues at the top of airways *.Obstruction in the nasal passageway *.Alcohol *.Sleeping on the back *.Mispositioned jaw Treatment *.Lose weight(to stop fat from pressing on the throat) *.Sleep on their side *.Quit smoking(smoking weakens and clogs the throat) *.Use nasal strip or nasal spray *.Use anti-snore clothing and pillows *.Use an oral appliances *.Use didgeridoo ( it strengthens the tissues of the throat, and can also provide good exercise for the respiratory system) *.Use Mandibular Advancement Splints ( an MAS advances the lower jaw slightly and thereby pull the tongue forward) *.Use a continuous positive airway pressure machine(a CPAP helps to keep the airway open by pumps a controlled stream of air through a flexible hose to a mask worn over the nose or mouth) *.Exercise Regularly (increases the muscle tone of the upper airway) Also in an attempt to control snoring, one may have to consider surgery. Such surgical procedure include *.Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP): UPPP is an attempt to widen the airway by removing the uvula and pharyngeal arches and partial removing the soft palate. This procedure is considered to be performed under general anaesthetic and it has an adverse side effect such as nasopharyngeal regurgitation, voice changes, persistent palatal dryness and a partial loss of taste. *.Cautery-Assisted Palatal stiffening operation (CAPSO) or Palatal Stiffening: This procedure involves the burning out of the palate causing fibrosis and consequent stiffening of the soft palate. It also helps to remove the longitudinal strip of mucosa along the soft palate or uvula. CAPSO can be continuous until the snoring stops. *.Laser-Assisted Uvuloplatoplasty (LAUP): This procedure involves vaporising the free edge of the soft palate and uvula using a laser. This procedure can be repeated the number of procedures varies. An LAUP patient may require up to four (4) sessions. NOTE: The tonsils are not removed with this procedure and the post-operative pains may be severe. *.Radio-Frequency Ablation (RFA): This Procedure involves the heating of the soft tissue between the rate of 77 °C and 85ºC which results to the tissue being scarred. This procedure is usually carried out on an outpatient basis and it takes up to 20 minutes. However, RFA requires the patient to undergo several treatment sessions. *.Pillar Procedure: In this procedure small woven implants are placed in the soft palate, stiffening the palate and reducing vibration that can cause snoring. This Procedure is said to be minimally invasive treatment for snoring and OSA and is done in less than 30 minutes. Medication The combination of pseudoephedrine and domperidone can help in the treatment of snoring. Culled from ihealthng..co.ke/2016/05/facts-about-snoring.html?m=1 |
