Op if i may ask, what exactly do you plan to do with the coconuts and how much will a 250 trees fetch per annum?
I plan to sell them sir and I see it as a cash crop investment. Manufacturers in Lagos and Kano alone travels as far as Ghana to import coconut. The value chain is huge brother!

Good Morning Sir!

You an Angel sent to me! What you said is absolutely correct. It kind of funny! I never watered/water it aside the Rains! Can you imagine!

My thinking is that it roots are deep in the ground so it can source for water by itself! Lol

I actually told the neighbor who gave me the Coconut I planted and she told me to tie a Rope around it and that that was what her mother told her to do. You need to see her Coconut Tree with hanging Coconuts bunches/clutches! But she told me when water it a lot. Though I never believe in the rope tying stuff but I think the watering works.

I know there must be a scientific reason for the shedding and your explanation just nailed it.

I got salt plenty for house and I am a chicken farmer too (Low Scale) so I can readily get manure.

I will apply as soon as I get home for the weekends.

Many Thanks Sir!
Appreciate your visiting my thread smiley Do you know if everyone/ compound plants coconut tree, it could solve some family needs? Have a pleasant holidays

Wow! This is great. How can you be sure that it is actually dwarf coconut when buying from a nursery?
Where in Ogun is the dwarf breed supplier friend of yours?

How many acres of land have you planted the 250 trees on?
What is the risk of bush fire in that area?

We planted some coconut trees around the house in the 1990s. Within 15 to 20 years they grew too tall and had to be cut down. Risk of falling over to damage the house or fence.

They were supposed to be dwarf but grew very fast. The fruits were bountiful though and was a shame having to chop them down.

Have you considered a coconut co-operative?
Have you also considered oil palm?

Thanks.
Thanks for visiting my thread and your interest.
I know his house and the seedlings came from the coconut trees in his compound.
Also you can know through the shape of the dried fruit. Some hybrid seedlings have big seeds. But for a newbie, I will advise you buy from different nurseries so that, he/she won't be a victim of wrong seedlings.

Planted them on 3 acres with spacing of 5.5m. the threat from bush fires are always high during the dry season. One need to work with his farm neighbors to reduce it's occurance.

Coconut trees rarely collapses on building, because if they do, all the coconuts on sea shores(Badagry) would have all be gone now with turrent of winds lashing at them from the sea.

I have written to them in Ogun State and I got a response. I am trying to get my acts right first.

Yes I have considered oil palm. Super gene interests me most. Planning of adding some to a section of my farm.

Thanks smiley

OP u do realise this is a long term investment right? Cos coconut starts producing fruits after 10 years.
Yes I know. That is the reason I went for dwarf and hybrid seedlings which can start fruiting within 3-4years max. Also people in oil palm plantation also waits.

The idea is long term investment!

Good one Op. May your Labour not be in vain.

Please I have one solitary Coconut Tree in my compound. Planted 15-05-2019. Started flowering last year November (2021).

The Flowering was okay (Seven Clutches in all) but the small Coconuts hanging on the bunches ALL fell off save only 4. I thought may be it was still a young Tree

This year now, seven Flower Clutches have emerged and the same thing is happening.

What could be the cause? And what can I do?

I am not around now, I will get you pictures of what I am trying to say in a while.
Good morning Dear,
I perfectly understand what you are saying. It is not that it a young tree parsay, due to lack of nutrients and water to carry the load. So the tree had to shed fruits to take what it can carry. I did experienced this too.

I travelled home in September this year, I observed that, the local folks that have coconuts usually tied ropes and red clothes to stop this shedding of fruits (their beliefs) and to them, they said it works.

How to solve this problem is by digging a ring round the coconut, measuring 1 and the 1/2 feet's away from the tree. Apply 250grs of edible salt(#100) in a ring form, apply enough manure(either dried cow dung or chicken waste); water it very well . You can be doing this twice in a year and observe the effects. Also, most coconuts fruit in dry season and requires alot of water. This might sound funny,if you have rusted zincs/irons put them by the base of the coconut and water.

That is the reason most coconut farms are sited close to the sea, river or marshy areas for maximum productivity

Alternatively if you have money, you can buy fertilizer with 15-15-15 mark and apply 20gr in a ring form (first 3month)

TravelRe: Why Do Nigerians Become Less Religious When They Travel Abroad? by umuna(m): 10:44pm On Dec 28, 2022
SReporters:
By Jett-Iyke Amaechi

I asked a friend that traveled abroad when he told me about the decline in his spiritual life.

"Or is it that they don't allow you pray over there? Tell me."

The abroad guy responded, "No, it is not so. You are allowed to pray here.

But when you get here you will realize that a lot of things that we perceive to be spiritual are not.

They are a product of failures, from government and ourselves.

You will meet a system and an ideology that will challenge your previous beliefs.

Imagine that here, you don't pray to fill gas, own a house, a car, go to school or have your children attend one of the best schools.

But in Nigeria, sometimes you even pray to have your three square meal per day."

"The thing tire me." I replied.

Then he continued, "You don't even pray to get a job.

There are agencies saddled with that responsibility and they do their best to get you a job in 2 months.

And once you get that job your life becomes a product of leverage, the one we acknowledge as grace in Nigeria.

But this grace doesn't come from above, it comes from the government.

Your child can even go to university and graduate without paying a dime.

As the child begins to work, the government will gradually deducts his fees from his salary in a way that it won't even affect the child.

Under such atmosphere, if it's you, you will change and behave like me.

You won't even suspect your uncles, you will know they have no hand in your failure or success.

I don't suspect my uncle's anymore. Infact, I even call them on phone now.

We are closer than before. Life is really a mystery.

A traveller is wiser than a gray-haired man.

But I will advise you, you know the government we have, do your best and come to this place.

You will thank God you did."

At this instance, I was weak. " So our government had made us to hate our uncles like this when we should have loved them.

Oh! As I have become an uncle now, tomorrow my nephews and nieces will hate me thinking that I'm responsible for their failures.

When I'm innocent. God forbid! Some of our uncles may be dying in silence of their innocency.

God will help them.

So, our government made us pray about every issue of life no matter how small and jump from one prayer house to another.

It shall not be well with them." I concluded.

" I think you now understand," We ended the call.

I was in deep thinking of what to do.

"Should we all leave this country and runaway? No, all of us aren't meant to travel overseas." I muttered those words.

But you that read to this point, what do you think?

https://www.solutionreporters.com/2022/12/24/why-do-nigerians-become-less-religious-when-they-travel-abroad/
Because half of the prayer points have been solved by government in that country!

I have actually be very interested in Coconut farms. I understand there are dwarf coconuts with only three years gestation period and a plat can bear about 160 fruits a year. Please I need more information about the latest breeds with similar or better features than the above. I once contacted a farm in Ibadan but not sure I still have their contact. Please share your experience and valuable pieces of information.
I have seen dwarf of 2 years but it is not possible for you to get 160 fruits in a year. But one thing I know of, as the tree matures with good care, it's fruiting might increase. For example, my practice tree in my compound started fruiting 3 and half years. During it's first year, it gave 3 coconuts only. 2nd year we got 16. The 3rd year we got 36 coconus. This year agot 45 coconuts.

Buttom line: as they age, it brings more fruits and you have to fertilize and apply manure.

I am also in Ogun state and I am planning on purchasing 2 plots next year although I was hoping to rear goats on them.

How long does it take for the coconut tree to start yielding?

I bought these two I'm going to plant on my other site and the dude said they are dwarf
If they are dwarf as he said, 3-4 years max.

Thanks for your response. The plant is to fetch us some revenue whist waiting for the coconuts. Another purpose of the plantains in the farm is to provide shades to the young coconut trees.

Even the villagers where my farm is located, makes jest of me for taking this part, they believe it will take time. I am not disturbed because I see it as a long time investment. Some people do fix money for a long time too na! cool

How about 2 coconut trees planted side by side. One proudest fruits while the other remains barren, what could be the reason?
Hmmm. The specie matters in this situation. The coconut planted are they both dwarf type? Because if they are both the dwarf type, they will both produce. But if they are the specie that takes longer and taller, it will not fruit because they are both competing for food(nutrients in the soil).

I have come across this scenario in a friends family compound at Ijebu Ode. They have older coconut trees in the compound, and because the mum and sisters don't bother to check when ever some coconut falls from the trees, those coconut ended up germinating. I even harvested some last month from this dwarf trees.

I will try and post a picture of this scenario 2nd week of January 2023 God willing for you to see that, it sures boils down to the specie planted.

You're absolutely right dear. It will take 3to 4 years before they start fruiting. atimes with abundance of water nutrients, fruiting could start early.

But there are some coconut plants that don't produce fruits. I know of someone that planted coconuts in his main house and rental house which was just on the next street. The one in his main house never bore fruits while the one in the rental house bore hundreds of coconuts till the tree wore out. The tenants just dey enjoy free coconuts cos the landlord no too get wahala. We were told that it the male and female coconut seeds are identical (just like pawpaw) and one won't know the difference till they get to the fruiting stage.
Well that is not true. The soil conditions of the one that was not bearing fruits cold be a factor, building shading the coconut from sunlight and at times all they need is manuring and edible salts(yes) etc. Some species of coconut could take 10-12 years before it starts fruiting and if they are not taken good care of, it could take longer time before gestation period.

Attached are pictures of what I am trying to explain to you. This pictures are from the coconut in my compound.

It's possible too in Kaduna. Southern Kaduna has about 51.2% population going by the last census. Why do you think all the parties join forces to attack Obi everyday, Obi and LP they call structureless? APC and PDP have employed very smart, intelligent and experienced elections forecasters and strategists, and those people have told them the damage LP can do to their presidential ambitions. While NW and NE is going to be a strong fight with APC, PDP and to a lesser extent, NNPP, APC and PDP have zero chances of winning SE. On the other hand, LP is doing well in SS and making inroads in SW and NC. Considering there are 3 strong candidates + 1 contesting, you should understand why the various propaganda against Obi.
