A woman has been caught by the Nigerian Prisons Services officials, NPS, while trying to smuggle Indian hemp into Ikoyi Prisons. The woman's husband is an inmate at the facility, so she attempted to take advantage of humanitarian service providers and inmates’ relations’ visit, during which people are allowed to bring in things for inmates. The woman allegedly concealed the illicit drug, which weighed about 930 grammes, in four big tomato tins. She was caught when officials at the gate insisted on a thorough check of every item brought into the prison. When the tomato tins were opened, Indian hemp, a phone, and a sim card were discovered. The Deputy Controller of Prisons (DCP), Ikoyi Prisons, Tolu Ogunsakin, has begun an investigation to determine if the woman's husband was involved in the matter. https://lailasnews.com/woman-caught-trying-to-smuggle-indian-hemp-into-ikoyi-prisons/ lalasticlala

Nollywood actress Fortune Marshal has revealed that her ex-husband used voodoo to marry her. According to the Nigerian-based Ghanaian/Jamaican actress, her ex-husband was emotionally and physically abusive towards her. Speaking with Sunnews, the mom of two said; “I started acting since 2008 in Ghana. I came to Nigeria in 2009 and joined the industry in 2010. I was a product of domestic violence. I dropped out of the university in my second year due to financial difficulties. It was also the year I got pregnant for the man who got me through voodoo (charms). Life wasn’t easy for me then. I had to do odd jobs to cater for myself because the man wasn’t helping but rather abusing me physically and emotionally. “I was under his spell until God saved me from him. We had two kids; he took them from me; for many years I didn’t see them until two years ago. I went and took the younger one in his absence. I have one son with me presently. For now, I don’t want to think about re-marriage, I just want to focus on my career, myself and my son, because we need a lot of catching up to do. Maybe after that, I will give my heart another chance to love.” On if she decides to give marriage a second try, Marshal said it will be a person she shares “same values and visions” with her. “Most times I tell ladies, there is nothing like Mr Right when you share the same value and vision with a man, then you are compatible,” she stated. https://lailasnews.com/my-ex-used-voodoo-to-marry-me-actress-fortune-marshal/ LALASTICLALA

Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has denied reports of him pitching camp with Atiku Abubakar against Lagos APC governorship candidate Babajide Sanwo-Olu's election. There were reports claiming that the governor was using his close ally, Tokunbo Afikuyomi, to campaign against Sanwo-Olu and APC. Governor Ambode in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, said that he would never take any action to undermine the prospects of the party in the ongoing elections. Read the statement below The statement reads: “The attention of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has been drawn to a report in today’s edition of The Nation newspaper, Friday March 1, 2019. “Specifically, the contentious report, which was published on the newspaper’s front page without any by-line, insinuated that Governor Ambode might be working with an opposition party through a former member of the Lagos State Executive Council and Commissioner for Energy & Mineral Resources, Mr. Wale Oluwo. “The report also attempted to hold the Governor responsible for the alleged activities of Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi because he supported the governor’s gubernatorial ambition during the primaries of the All Progressives Congress in October 2018. “The governor wishes to make it abundantly clear that, having declared publicly his acceptance of the decision of the party on the primaries, he has not and will never take any action to undermine the prospects of the party in the on-going elections. “It is human to aspire, and the capacity of each individual to manage the negative outcomes of a legitimate aspiration differs. But that should never be the basis to link His Excellency to whatever action of certain individuals who might have shared his vision in the past but have proceeded to pursue their own interests as adults and citizens without any influence from or recourse to the governor. “Governor Ambode’s decision to stand by the party that has given him the platform to serve Lagosians meritoriously is based on the principle of justice, responsibility and loyalty. “He has everything to gain from the victory of the party’s candidate Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Governor of Lagos State on March 9, 2019, and he looks forward to handing over the affairs of the state to the candidate of the APC come May 29th. “It is therefore disturbing, unfair and sad that a respected medium such as The Nation, which enjoys the goodwill of members of our party and is appropriately positioned to verify the falsehood of these fictitious and sponsored hatchet job chose not to observe the journalistic dictum of “if in doubt, leave out” in the breach. “In this circumstance, His Excellency hereby makes use of his right to a rejoinder and demands an apology for the unjustifiable aspersions cast on his person by wrongly presenting him to right thinking members of the public as a disloyal saboteur trying to frustrate his party’s campaign and electoral victory. Nothing can be further from the truth. “Governor Ambode has consistently appealed to those who sympathise with him that the best way to express solidarity is to vote for the candidates of the All Progressives Congress on Saturday March 9, 2019 in order to ensure that his own legacy is preserved and the gains of the past four years are improved upon “As we move towards next Saturday’s important election, Governor Ambode urges Lagosians and party faithful not to allow fifth columnists pretending to be overzealous crusaders frustrate our onerous efforts to take Lagos State to the next level. “The governor says as he did in the run-up to last Saturday’s presidential poll, he will leave no stone unturned and spare no effort in ensuring that the party’s flag-bearer in the governorship election, Mr. SanwoOlu and all the 40 APC candidates in the House of Assembly poll are duly elected on Saturday March 9. https://lailasnews.com/ambode-denies-working-for-atiku-against-sanwo-olus-election/

An isolated Indian tribe armed with bows and arrows has killed an American tourist who illegally ventured to their island home, police said on Wednesday (Nov 21) in India's Andaman islands where contact with indigenous people is banned to protect their way of life. John Chau, 27, was surrounded and killed by tribal fighters, who fiercely defend their island paradise on the Andaman Sea, official sources told AFP. Chau paid local fishermen to take him to North Sentinel Island which is out of bounds even to the Indian navy in a bid to protect its reclusive inhabitants who number only about 150. Chau was hit by a hail of arrows as soon as he set foot on the island, an official source told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. "He was attacked by arrows but he continued walking. The fishermen saw the tribals tying a rope around his neck and dragging his body," the source said. "They were scared and fled but returned next morning to find his body on the sea shore." OUTSIDERS NOT WELCOME Indian police said a murder case had been registered against "unknown tribesmen" and seven people arrested in connection with the death. "The investigation in this matter is on," senior police officer Deepak Yadav said in a press release. Indian media said the fishermen told a preacher in the main town, Port Blair, about the incident and the preacher contacted Chau's family in the United States. The case has cast a rare spotlight on the indigenous people in the islands deep in the Indian Ocean who live shielded from the outside world to safeguard them from 21st century diseases. Chau had a tourist visa to enter the Andamans, where access to some restricted zones is given, the official sources said. But it is illegal to go within three miles (five kilometers) of North Sentinel island. Chau had made several trips to other Andaman islands before offering money to fisheremen to take him to North Sentinel, the sources said. "He tried to reach Sentinel island on November 14 but could not make it. Two days later he went well prepared. He left the dinghy midway and took a canoe by himself to the island," one of the sources said. HOSTILE HUNTERS A spokesperson for the US consulate in Chennai said they were aware of "reports concerning a US citizen in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands". "The welfare and safety of US citizens abroad is one of the highest priorities of the US Department of State," the mission said in a statement to AFP without further comment. The Andamans are also home to the 400-strong Jarawa tribe who activists say are threatened by contact from outsiders. But tourists have previously bribed local officials in a bid to be able to spend time with them. Tribes such as the Sentinelese, who are believed to number about 150 people, shun all contact with the outside world and have a record of hostility to anyone who tries to get close. In 2006, two Indian fishermen who moored their boat to sleep were killed when the vessel broke loose and drifted onto the shore, according to Survival International, a tribal rights advocacy group. The Sentinelese hunt and gather in the forest, and fish in the coastal waters. The island was hit by the huge 2004 tsunami that swept across the Indian Ocean but not much is known about the impact it had on the reclusive inhabitants. However after the tsunami one member of the tribe was photographed attempting to fire an arrow at an Indian Coast Guard helicopter. Indian authorities make periodic checks on the tribe from boats anchored at a safe distance from shore. https://lailasnews.com/isolated-indian-tribe-kill-american-intruder lalasticlala

The All Progressive Congress, APC has mentioned that the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje cannot be substituted for in the 2019 election over his bribery allegation. Also, a high-ranking member of the state chapter of the party claims the dollar bribes were donations made for political campaigns in the state, Premium Times reports. An online newspaper, Daily Nigerian, had a month ago, released video footages captured with a spy camera showing Governor Ganduje allegedly receiving $5 million bribe from a contractor. On whether the embattled governor will eventually be dropped as APC’s Kano gubernatorial candidate in view of published video clips, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, told PRNigeria that Mr Ganduje remains the standard bearer of APC in next year’s governorship election. Mr Issa-Onilu, who clearly pointed out that the party lacks the power to change or arbitrarily substitute a bonafide candidate, added: ‘’The INEC guidelines on the selection or replacement of candidates are explicit. It doesn’t confer power on political parties to whimsically, arbitrarily or recklessly just substitute a candidate on frivolous grounds. “It is only when a candidate dies, voluntarily withdraws from contesting an election, or a court pronouncement that a candidate can then be substituted or replaced, if you like. So as things stand, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, regardless of the unfortunate development is and still remains APC’s Kano guber candidate. Don’t forget that the governor has sued the publisher of the online media for defamation of character,’’ he concluded Meanwhile, a top party stalwart in Kano State who pleaded anonymity told PRNigeria that political parties in Nigeria collect donations and commissions from individuals and groups to fund electoral campaigns and mobilisation of members for political rallies. The politician, who claimed to be actively involved in APC fund mobilisation in the state, said: “There were agreements reached as early as 2016 on preparation for likely bye-elections and re-elections in 2019 where suggestions were made to accept donations and commissions from patrons and contractors in the state who are beneficiaries of government’s gesture. “These donations are not for Ganduje, but for the party. They are to be deployed into funding the party’s activities and campaigns for the re-election bid of Mr President, the Governor and other APC aspirants for 2019 general elections. “Political donations and payment of commission are common and legitimate means of appreciation and reward for patronage. Even in media organizations, generous discounts and commissions are provided up to 30 to 40%. Ganduje has therefore done nothing dishonourable and scandalous as other state governors are also beneficiaries of financial gifts, rewards and donations from people who can afford to give.” Another insider in the party and top-functionary in Kano State Government, who equally spoke to PRNigeria in confidence, said though Mr Ganduje may have been caught receiving bribes, he has delivered beyond expectations as Kano governor and remains the most credible flagbearer of the party to guarantee a landslide victory in the next year’s governorship election. “The governor has executed several beneficial projects across the states. If at all he hasn’t performed excellently, will President Buhari have applauded him in Paris? Nothing can be more significant than Mr President assuredly commending Ganduje on a diplomatic trip.” Mohammed Garba, the Kano State Information Commissioner, was however asked by PRNigeria to verify the claim of the governor’s supporters and aides that he only collected donations and not bribes. But the commissioner declined to speak on the matter, saying it will amount to court contempt as the issue is already a litigation case. https://lailasnews.com/ganduje-cannot-be-substituted-cash-received-not-bribe-apc/ lalasticlala

Tunde Akinsanmi, lead vocalist of popular music group, Styl Plus, has officially dumped the band to pursue a solo career in music adapting the new name Tunde T Dot. He made this announcement on Thursday at a news conference in Abuja. Tunde, who disclosed that he was now signed onto PEC records in solo capacity, said he no longer wished to be known on stage as Tunde Styl Plus, but Tunde T Dot. According to him, the decision to change the name was based on the need to pick a name that would reflect his new direction as a solo entity in entertainment. “I have never really had a stage name. It has always been ‘Tunde Styl Plus’ which obviously was because I was part of a group. So, going forward, I would like to be referred to as Tunde T Dot,” he said. Explaining his reason for dumping the award-winning Styl Plus, Tunde said: “I stopped performing with Shifi and Zeal (of Styl Plus) in 2012 over lots of disagreements back then. It was such that we no longer talked to each other. Over the years, we have come to terms with our new positions.” He, however, assured his fans that his going solo does not foreclose the possibility of working with his former band mates, albeit in a new arrangement. “All that ‘beef’ (quarrel) has been quashed. We are looking at the possibility of a reunion in the future in what may be described as a super group.” https://lailasnews.com/tunde-dumps-styl-plus-goes-solo-with-new-name-tunde-t-dot

President Muhammadu Buhari, in his response to the a question posed at him, has mentioned that Kano State governor, Umar Ganduje is a responsible leader despite allegations of the governor receiving bribes putting his position in question. The embattled governor has been in the news over the past few weeks after the publisher of Daily Nigerian, Ja'afar Ja'afar, alleged that he regularly received bribes from contractors handling projects in the state. In a series of videos in Ja'afar's possession, the governor was alleged to have received a total of $5 million in installments from a certain contrator on several occasions. Five different video clips have gone viral on social media showing the governor accepting bundles of dollar notes from the yet-to-be-identified contractor. The president has been notably silent over the issue since it first broke last month, but was questioned about it while meeting with the Nigerian community in Paris, France on Monday, November 12, 2018. According to a report by Channels Television, when one of the participants asked the president what his government was doing about the allegations, he deflected by praising the governor for "doing so much". He said: "I commend the governor for doing so much. He once invited me and I went to Kano. The good projects started by Kwankwaso in education and healthcare, Ganduje completed them. "He completed the projects and now the people of Kano are enjoying the benefit. I think that is very responsible of him." There has been public outrage in Thailand after a 13-year-old Thai boxer died during a charity bout, reviving calls for a ban on fights between children in the brutal Muay Thai martial art. Thai boxing is hugely popular in the country and many fighters enter the sport at a young age in search of fame and fortune. But the involvement of kids who sometimes start under 10 years of age in bouts that use kicks and elbows to the head — often without headguards — has stirred frequent criticism. More so as the young fighters are often family breadwinners from poor families and bouts are subject to frenzied ringside gambling. Anucha Tasako collapsed after his opponent delivered several blows to his head at a bout in Samut Prakan province, near Bangkok, on November 10. Smartphone footage shown by local media captured the grim moment he hit the canvas as assistants quickly rushed into the ring to help the motionless Anucha, who fought under the alias Phetmongkol Sor Wilaithong. He later died from a brain haemorrhage, according to police. Domestic media said he had been fighting since he was eight and had competed in more than 150 bouts. His opponent, Nitikron Sonde, is around the same age, police said. He took to Facebook to express his sorrow at the death. “I regret it,” he posted on Tuesday, “but I have to do my duty to win so I can make enough money to sponsor myself through education.” Neither fighter was wearing protective headgear. A bill to prevent minors aged under 12 from taking part is under consideration. The draft bill is likely to gain support after Anucha’s death. Outrage and anger poured in as news of his death spread, with some blaming the referee for not stepping in sooner to end the fight. “He could barely stand. Why didn’t the referee stop the fight but let him continue to be hit until he was knocked down,” one Thai Facebook user said. Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports was quoted in local media saying he would submit the draft bill “as soon as possible”. But some defended the practice of starting fighters young. “I don’t agree with the draft law to totally ban boxers who are under 12 years old because 99 percent of the famous Thai boxers and Olympic winners began fighting when they were young,” Tawee Umpornmaha, 59, a Thai Olympic medalist, told AFP, describing the boy’s death as an accident. “I began at 12 with more than 200 fights. The question is do we have proper safety measures? We must give importance to safety measures including field doctors,” he said https://lailasnews.com/outrage-as-13-year-old-thai-boxer-die-in-ring/ lalasticlala

A cannibal who walked in a police station holding a human leg told cops, I’m tired of eating human flesh, a court heard yesterday. Nino Mbatha, 33, is said to have handed in part of a human leg and a hand to police at the station. This development led to an investigation that uncovered more remains in a nearby house. Officers were then led to a woman’s mutilated body under some rocks in Estcourt, South Africa. Mbatha, Lungisani Magubane, 31, and Khayelihle Lamula, 33, have been charged with the murder of 24-year-old mum Zanele Hlatshwayo. Mbatha, who is also said to be a traditional healer, has also been charged with "handling human tissue". Prosecutors say Magubane and Lamula went to Mbatha for a good luck charm and he told them the ancestors insisted that blood needed to be spilled. Lamula then found Zanele drunk and she agreed to get into his car, unaware that he planned to use her for rituals. The Pietermaritzburg High Court heard that Lamula then picked up Magubane and Mbatha and drove them all to a secluded spot where Mbatha killed the mum and ate parts of her body. All three suspects have pleaded not guilty to all counts. The woman’s body was found in August 2017 after one of the suspects reportedly led community members and police to where it was hidden. Police spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbheke said the suspects were arrested after Mbatha walked into the Estcourt station with the human leg. She said: When he was questioned, he produced part of a human leg and a hand. Further investigation led police to a house where they were met with a foul smell, and more human remains were found. A second suspect was also arrested in Estcourt and a third in the Amangwe area. More body parts were found. A fourth suspect Sithembiso Sithole, 31 was arrested and charged, but reportedly killed himself in jail awaiting trial. https://lailasnews.com/im-tired-of-eating-human-flesh-cannibal-says-as-he-surrenders-to-police/ lalasticlala

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, on Tuesday cleared the air on the emergence of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, his Muslim running mate for the 2019 governorship election in the state. The governor, who received in audience the people of Sanga Local Government Area who were at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Kaduna, on a thank-you visit for picking their daughter, said the choice of his running mate was based on competence and performance. He explained that under his administration, there was no room for religious or sentiments in deciding who to appoint into any office in the state, the Punch reports. “Muslim-Muslim ticket is not a religious ticket but a competent and performance ticket,” the governor said. El-Rufai had told critics of the Muslim-Muslim ticket that the Government House was not a place for worship but where people work. The governor added that most of his Muslim-Muslim ticket critics were those who did not vote for him in the 2015 governorship election in the state. “The people that have criticised me most on this are people who never voted me in the first place. So, are they not supposed to be celebrating it? “In their own opinion, I have made a wrong choice. Then, why are they mourning?” he asked. Earlier, the paramount ruler of Numana in Sanga LG where Dr. Hadiza Balarabe hails from, Brigadier-General Aliyu Yamma (Rtd), said the choice of their daughter had given them the hope of being in government. He sad successive administrations had forgotten the people of the area as far as participation in government was concerned. “The governor couldn’t have made a better choice than the selection of Hadiza. “We now feel a sense of belonging in Kaduna government. We are just like Black Americans in Kaduna State,” he said. https://lailasnews.com/why-i-chose-a-muslim-running-mate-gov-el-rufai/
