Food / Re: Latest Prices Of Bags Of Rice In Nigeria by unikwa: 5:20am On Oct 18, 2019
Buhari closed the borders because of rampant smuggling.
Because Nigeria's ports are very difficult and expensive, a lot of importers ship their goods to neighboring countries. They pay lower tariffs to clear their goods.
Those goods are then smuggled into Nigeria without paying a kobo to Nigeria.
Buhari is losing a lot of money to this smuggling. He must think closing the borders is a way of raising money.
Goods that can be cleared for N2m in Cotonou, would cost about N5m to clear in Lagos.
What Buhari needs to do is reduce the tariff to the same level as neighboring countries are charging. Otherwise, the smuggling would continue.

Travel / Abuja To Warri Railway Contract Awarded - $3.9bn by unikwa: 4:19pm On Oct 16, 2019
The government of Nigeria yesterday signed a contract with state-owned China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC) to build a major new railway linking the capital Abuja to the port city of Warri, a distance by air of approximately 440km.

The project is valued at $3.9bn, Nigerian media reported, adding that it would be a public-private partnership, with Nigeria providing an equity stake of 15%, CRCC an equity stake of 10%, and the remaining 75% borrowed from Cina’s Export-Import (Exim) Bank.

The project includes the construction of a new port at Warri, reports said.

CRCC will operate the railway and the port to recover its investment.

Heading south from Abuja, the line will pass through the city of Baro. A branch line will be built to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

Announcing the contract, Nigeria’s transport minister Rotimi Amaechi said CRCC was in charge of all rail projects in Nigeria.

CRCC Limited is a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation, which has many subsidiaries.

“The entire railway for now in Nigeria is constructed 100 per cent by the CRCC,” reports quote him as saying. “I think that the good working relationship we have had with the CRCC is the reason we have not been able to engage other companies.”

9% tax on top of VAT, on top of 30% business tax, on top of ...
Then the banks will impose their own charges at every turn.
All these taxes end up being passed on to the consumer, who is already struggling to put food on the table.

The Buhari APC campaign promise was to reduce poverty. But it seems they are drivers of poverty.
No wonder Nigeria has become #1 in the world with the most poor people.
Nigeria has more poor people now than China, and India.

Fix Nigeria's borders, and people won't be patronizing foreign borders.

When goods are sent to a Nigerian border, the headache is too much in the clearing stage.
I've heard that it takes longer to clear goods from Nigerian port than it takes to transport it from its origin.
At Benin Republic however, clearing goods from the ports is almost like visiting the post office to collect your parcel.

Buhari has the power to clean up Nigeria. Why doesn't he do it?

Crime / Nigeria's Porous Borders by unikwa: 10:20pm On Sep 19, 2019
Nigeria is plagued with a lot of problems.

One of the big issues is the neglect of its borders.
Wide open borders encourages smuggling. When goods are smuggled into the country, Nigeria loses a lot of money in uncollected tariffs.
Also, open borders allows bad people to just walk across from other countries. These bad people are said to carry out all kinds of criminal acts, which affects the nation's economic development.

If Nigeria is serious about security and wants to grow as a nation, a wall must be built on the border.
Here is president Donald Trump building America's borders...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3hjFU9rNNY

China has a wall around its entire 21,000 km border.
Nigeria's border is a mere 4,000 km.

Time to start thinking about building Nigeria's borders.

Cashless Policy: Reps demand halt of CBN’s new charges on bank transactions

The House of Representatives has asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to immediately suspend the implementation of the new aspect of the cashless policy on deposits which has taken effect today.

The lawmakers took the resolution after adopting a motion brought under matters of urgent national importance by its spokesperson, Benjamin Kalu.

The CBN had announced that from Wednesday, September 18, certain cash deposits and withdrawals from individual bank accounts are to attract additional charges.

In a circular to all deposit money bank (DMBs), the Director, Payments System Management Department at the CBN, Sam Okojere, it said henceforth 3 per cent processing fees would be paid for withdrawals and 2 per cent for deposits of amounts above N500,000 for individual accounts.

The apex bank also said corporate accounts will attract 5 per cent processing fees for withdrawals and 3 per cent processing fee for lodgments of amounts above N3 million.

The CBN said the charges would be in addition to already existing ones on withdrawals and is aimed at encouraging its cashless policy.

The new directive has already started generating heated arguments in the polity.
‘Negative impacts’

But reacting to the new policy, the lawmaker said the implementation of cashless policy in Nigeria so far, has led to a significant decrease in deposit mobilisation and credit extension by Nigerian Money Deposit Banks.

“The implementation of cashless policy on withdrawals has negative impacts on micro, mini, small, and medium enterprises which are clearly the engine room for growth of the economy and employment generation, thereby throwing many of them out of business and sending more Nigerians into poverty, forcing more traders and micro investors to carry cash about with its attendant security challenges,” Mr Kalu said.

“While the impact of the cashless policy on withdrawals is still starring us all in our faces as well as other numerous burdensome charges by Nigerian Money Deposit Banks heavily impacting on businesses, the Central Bank of Nigeria deemed it necessary to impose the implementation of cashless policy on deposits, without due consultations with all shades of stakeholder who will be impacted by the policy.

“This overbearing burden aimed at closing down majority of micro, mini, small and medium businesses in Nigeria is also aimed at enriching Nigerian Money Deposit Banks owned by a privileged few, without any known financial contribution to the consolidated revenue fund of the federation,” he added.

The lawmaker said he was concerned that the Central Bank of Nigeria “did not consider the people as the as prime, important and in deed the centre piece of policy-making, even as Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As Altered) provides for the security and welfare of the people as the primary purpose of government”.

The House called for the immediate suspension of the policy.

The House also mandated its Committee on Banking and Currency to interface with the CBN “to ascertain the propriety, relevance and the actual need for the implementation of that aspect of the cashless policy at this time considering the prevailing economic situation of the country and to report back to the House within 4 weeks”.

Business / Bad News: New Bank Fees Introduced by unikwa: 6:58pm On Sep 18, 2019
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in its recently released circular on the implementation of the cashless policy has stated that in addition to already existing charges on cash withdrawal, charges will now apply on Naira cash deposits in Lagos, Ogun, Kano, Abia, Anambra, Rivers states and the FCT.

This directive from the CBN is effective 18 September 2019.

The CBN also confirmed that Nationwide implementation will take effect from 31 March 2020.

Please see below the applicable charges;

Account Type --- Withdrawal/Lodgment limits --- Processing fees for Withdrawals --- Processing fees for Lodgments

Individual --- Above N500,000 --- 3% --- 2%

Corporate --- Above N3,000,000 --- 5% --- 3%

So, the govt takes 30% of a company's income as taxes.
Then when you go to deposit the money in your bank account, they take another 3%.
Anytime you withdraw the money, they again take another 5%.
All of these charges on top of sales taxes, VAT, property tax, etc.

This is legalized stealing by the govt.

This kind of thing discourages people from investing in Nigeria. There should be no extra charges for depositing your money in the bank, or for withdrawing your money. The only time you should encounter fees for money transfer is when you do wire transfers, etc.

If you impose too many taxes, as you're doing now, investors would simply pack up and move to other countries where taxes are more favourable. Nigeria is being hostile toward business.

Nigeria ranks 146 in 2019 World Bank ease of doing business. Instead of trying to improve this horrific ranking, they instead are piling up even more bad policies against business.

Forget e-border. Just build a physical barrier.
The great wall of China is 21,000 km long. If China managed to build such border, surely Nigeria could build border wall that is just 4,000 km.

The same thing is going on in the USA, where president Trump wants a physical wall. The opposition party however, the Democrats want no border, or pretend e-border. That is because E-border is a joke. It won't work, and it's costly to maintain.

This is like trying to prevent car drivers from speeding by using electronic monitoring. Speed bumps however, work without any further effort or expense.

I don't think he is flaunting the car. He is just driving his car. Is it a crime to drive your car now?
Osinbajo was a multi millionaire (USD) before becoming VP. So a $80K car is normal for someone of his caliber. I doubt you would appreciate seeing him in a Toyota Camry. If you were a multi-millionaire, what type of car would you drive?
There are richer people who own private jets. Are you opposed to them?
Politics / Re: Solar Power Plant In BUK Inaugurated (Photos) by unikwa: 3:52pm On Sep 03, 2019
These are things this administration is tackling that people generally don't give it credit for. For political reasons of course.
This solar plant is a great long-term project. Nigeria is improving, one step at a time.

The article is not complete. Nothing about the cost, or about batteries.
I hope modern batteries like LiFePO4 (LFP) were used. They could last 3,000+ cycles, compared to Li-Ion, Lead-Acid, AGM, etc that only give about 500-1,000 cycles. http://www.hecobattery.com/photo/hecobattery/editor/20130708180232_87378.jpg
Also LFP allows up to 80-100% DoD without damage. While older tech can only do 50% max.

In addition to solar projects in Universities, Buhari is also building solar in markets around the country. I like the idea.
The only problem I see is that future administrations would not replace the batteries when the time comes to do so. Ultimately, the whole thing would collapse. The only good solution is to let private contractors maintain it. A contractor would keep it working, because it generates income for him.
Crime / Know Your Rights by unikwa: 4:06pm On Sep 02, 2019
Nigeria as a nation needs law-enforcement officers to deal with the crime wave that seemingly has gripped the nation.
Unfortunately, the officers themselves sometimes go too far, and end up becoming law-breakers themselves.
So where do you go to get justice, when those tasked with protecting your rights, take advantage of you?

The key is to know your rights. Arm yourself with information on what to do when you fall victim.

Do you know what to do:
- if a police or army officer takes undue advantage of you?
- if airport official mistreats you?
- if your bank takes money from your account, and refuses to give it back?
- if you're a taxi driver and a customer refuses to pay?

Nigeria likes to copy western countries. But they do not provide the amenities western nations provide.
The UK adds tax, and VAT to purchases. However, the UK has good roads, underground trains, 24/7 electricity, good hospitals, police, unemployment compensation, etc.
Nigeria just taxes, but offers no public services.

If Buhari is looking for money, start from cutting senators' salaries. What do these senators do to deserve such huge pay? A Nigerian senator earns more than the US president. Ridiculous!!

Technology Market / Grid-tie Inverter Technology by unikwa: 11:53pm On Jun 07, 2019
In developed nations, I marvel at the incredible stability of power supply, water, road infrastructure, etc. These nations understand what drives prosperity, and they ensure those things are never lacking.

Nigeria has had 50+ years to fix it's power problem. Yet the country continues to lag behind. Issues that have been solved in other countries generations ago, still plague Nigeria.

Kudos to the country for at least, taking the first step toward privatizing power generation. Govt has proven it cannot handle electric power generation. So private investors have to take over. An example is AEDC, which presides over power in Abuja, Nassarawa, Niger, and Kogi. Sadly, despite privatization, power interruptions still persist.

I believe that these power companies being monopolies is not a good thing. Competition should somehow be built into the system, whereby businesses compete for customers. Imagine if Nigeria only had a single bank. Or a single telecom company. Those companies would screw customers over with impunity.

Just as you can port your phone number between telecom networks, you should similarly be able to buy power from different providers with ease. When a business sees that it's loosing customers, it would naturally be forced to improve its services, or go out of business.

One of the newer developments in electricity generation is grid-tie inverter system.
Traditionally, the government, or a big company generates the power. The power is then distributed to consumers through a network of distribution channels. This remains the strategy in Nigeria to this day.

With grid-tie technology however, any individual can generate power, and sell it to the power company. The individual is then paid for the power generated. This payment happens by the power meter slowing down, or even turning backwards.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8vi5netiLU

So instead of making power generation a multi-billion Dollar affair, Nigeria should build a grid-tie infrastructure to enable ordinary Nigerians become a part of the power generation network. Those that can do solar would do solar, and/or those that can do wind can do wind. With as little as N60K, you can install a 300W solar panel plus inverter, and start to sell power to the power grid.

To put things in perspective, let's assume 10 million homes across Nigeria install an average of 3,000 Watts of panels.
That amounts to 10,000,000*3,000W = 30,000,000,000W = 30,000 MegaWatts.

Assuming solar panels can produce 80% of it's rated output, then 30,000MW*0.8 = 24,000 MegaWatts.
If combined with wind, power can be generated at night, and on cloudy days as well.

Nigeria currently struggles to generate 5,000 MegaWatts nationally. Meanwhile 10mil homes have the potential to generate 24,000 more megawatts through a grid-tie inverter system.

There are two important issues that plague this state...

If you visit the Tanke Oke-Odo area, internet is so bad there that you'd be lucky if one webpage loads for you. It should not be that way.

Also, the roads are horrible. Totally taken over by erosion. To move half a km could take 30 minutes. That is how bad the roads are. Nobody is even asking for tar on the road. Just smoothen the roads to alleviate people's suffering.
