Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Senator Seriake Dickson, on Thursday slammed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for failing to restore democratically elected government in Rivers State.

Recall that President Tinubu had, on 18th March 2025, announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State for an initial period of six months.

The President also announced the appointment of retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas as the state’s administrator to oversee the affairs of the oil-producing state.

Speaking during a media chat after President Tinubu addressed the joint session of the National Assembly to commemorate Democracy Day and 26 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria, the former Bayelsa State Governor expressed dismay that the President, in his nationwide address, failed to reinstate Governor Fubara and his deputy, as well as members of the State House of Assembly.

He said: “Let me start by saying Happy Democracy Day to all Nigerians — even though one might ask: are we truly happy?

“Democracy is supposed to inspire hope, but what we saw today in the Senate was a direct assault on that hope.”

Senator Dickson, who was visibly angry about the imposition of emergency rule in the oil-producing state, which is controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), described President Tinubu’s decision on Rivers State as a forceful takeover.

“And today, it was very annoying that the Senate President chose today, Democracy Day of all days, to read the President’s own democratic communication to the National Assembly, making appointments into democratic institutions in Rivers State, when today we expected that he should announce the restoration of democracy.

“The President has said he is not working for a one-party state — well and good — but all the body language and all the strategies of the President and his party are indicative of the fact that they want a Nigeria of sycophants.

“They want a Nigeria of people who say yes to everything. And the National Assembly cannot be that.

“The National Assembly, the President of the Senate, and the President of the Federal Republic need to know that once you’ve caged the National Assembly, you have caged democracy.

“And you cannot come and then make beautiful speeches on the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly claiming that you are democratic, claiming that you are not working towards a one-party rule.

“The best way to show that the President is committed to democracy is to respect the rights of everybody — to free speech and free participation — and most importantly, most poignantly, restore as quickly as possible democratic rule in Rivers State that was unjustifiably taken away,” Senator Dickson lamented.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday said the All Progressives Congress, APC, is open to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Tinubu said the APC is open to receiving Wike whenever he decides to switch into the ruling party.

He spoke while commissioning the Arterial Road N16 (Shehu Shagari Way) from Ring Road One (Nnamdi Azikiwe Way) to Arterial Road N20 (Wole Soyinka Road) and some other roads in Katampe District.

The president said with Wike, APC “will continue to be in a joyous mood” while the party’s rivals would continue to “writhe in pain.”

Wike is currently a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

PDP is having leadership issues which date back to the build-up of the 2023 presidential election.

President Bola Tinubu has advised his Minister of Works, David Umahi, to ignore the criticisms surrounding the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project and concentrate on his given assignment.

According to the President, those criticising the road are ignorant of their utterances, urging them to explore alternative options if they think paying tolls to use the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be too expensive for them.

He made the remarks while speaking at the launch of the reconstruction of Deep Sea Port Access Road in Lagos on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

"I bring to you, David, don't listen to those critics. They don't know what they're talking about," Tinubu said.

"If they don't like the road or if it's too expensive for tolling for them, they could go to Idumota.

"Our own is to affirm our commitment as an administration to deliver enduring infrastructure across our great nation. Forget all the misconceptions, you're a thinker and a doer, a great professional David. I'm very proud and honoured to have you in our team," he stated.

Current INEC Chairman, Prof Yakubu Is As Worst As Iwu, APC Wouldn’t Have Won in 2015 Under Him - Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has criticised the current chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, alleging that the All Progressives Congress would not have been registered or won the 2015 general elections if Yakubu had been in charge at the time.

Speaking on Arise TV on Tuesday night, Amaechi praised former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, for ensuring a transparent electoral process that led to the APC’s registration and eventual victory in 2015.

He said, “The current chairman of INEC, if he was the chairman of INEC in 2015, we would not have won. That’s an important point. May God bless (Attahiru) Jega. Because the ground rules were clear. The current chairman of INEC can only be compared to Iwu.

“When we were to register APC, Jega opened the door and we complied with the registration requirements. He got APC registered. The current man, if you comply with all these, he would not register you.”

He further alleged that INEC under Yakubu is already showing signs of bias.

“Already, INEC is biased. So, the only thing I can tell you now is that, looking at the way Nigeria has run the election, even the Option A4 led us forward. At least a lot of transparency. You were sure of what was going on. Then we came back to meet people like Iwu and others and the current one and things got worse.

“So, you don’t know whether to say we are progressing or we are regressing. There’s a state capture using the electoral institution as a machine.”

Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has blamed the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election on the choice of former governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Tunde Bakare, serving overseer of The Citadel Global Community Church, has asked President Bola Tinubu to accept advice and “stop playing God”.

Speaking on Sunday during his state of the nation broadcast at the church in Lagos, Bakare said the president should implement a “coordinated programme” to steer Nigeria out of its current crisis.

The cleric said Nigerians have prayed long enough for the country to improve, while he dismissed further calls for prayers as nothing more than a “mere religious ritual”.

He said Nigerian leaders need to act urgently to prevent the country from descending into a mafia state.

Killings and abductions by gunmen are on the rise across the country, with Plateau and Benue states among the hardest hit.

“People of faith have prayed to the point of weariness, and any call for prayer now appears to be a mere religious ritual,” Bakare said.

“Some have concluded that we have prayed long enough and that unless certain pragmatic steps are taken with immediate effect, the rage of the poor may engineer social, economic, and political worst-case scenarios.

“Only by confronting our reality with honesty and courage can we begin the work of resurrection – not just of our nation, but of our collective broken spirits.

“To avert the full-blown breakdown of law and order in our fragile democracy and the intervention of our already battle-weary armed forces, I offered timely counsel to the Nigerian government and led prayers for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday, January 12, 2025.”

Bakare said he used the prayer session to offer counsel on how leaders can steer the nation through its challenges.

“Dear Nigerians, the past few months since that admonition have shown that those responsible for steering the course of our nation lack the humility and character this moment demands of leaders,” he said.

“Instead, what we have seen since the beginning of the year is a descent into tyranny and the brazen abuse of power.

“Those entrusted with power appear determined to destabilise what is left of our political institutions and have committed themselves to obliterating the guardrails of constitutional governance.

“I urge you, Mr president, to think deeply and reflect on these words: ‘No man is wise enough nor good enough to be trusted with unlimited power’. Please, stop playing God!”

The cleric condemned the senate’s suspension of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the Kogi central senator, declaration of state of emergency in Rivers by Tinubu, and subsequent ratification by the national assembly.

“It is clear that our so-called leaders are determined to turn Nigeria into a mafia state,” Bakare said.

The two main contenders in the ongoing institutional immorality Olympics are the executive and the legislature.”

Bakare called for psychological tests on politicians seeking elective office.

The cleric said Nigerian leaders should coordinate nationwide survival interventions, stabilise the economy, reengineer debt profile, facilitate structural reforms for geo-economic industrialisation, spur inclusive economic growth and development, and build an economy.

“To execute this mandate, these visionary leaders should oversee the establishment of what I called the consolidated value investment and development fund (COVID Fund) when the pandemic brought the economy to a halt, a situation we are yet to recover from five years after,” he said.

“This fund, which I will now simply call ‘The Fund,’ is not based on volatile factors such as the price of oil. It rejects the logic that Nigeria must be trapped between the rock of loans or handouts and the hard place of a solely extractive economy.”
