Residents have resorted to using buckets of water to battle a raging fire from an oil spillage in Buguma, Rivers State as the fire is moving towards residential buildings.

The spill is said to have been caused by a faulty valve.

The oil spill is believed to be from a burst pipeline and has been spilling its content for the past three weeks.

The pipeline is said to have ruptured due to continued security raids on illegal oil refineries in the area.

Some supporters of the FCT Minister, in Ikwerre Local government area, who are also supporters of the former council Chairman, Samuel Nwanosike, have protested and issued a stern warning to the Police against reopening the Secretariat that was burnt by poltical arsonists last year.

The current Chairman, Hon Israel Abosi had earlier visited the Police and expressed deep dissatisfaction with the continuous barricade of the council secretariat.

Ikwerre Council Secretariat is the only one still not opened after the attack on over four Council Secretariats in Rivers State last October.

Residents of Aleto and the Council Boss of Eleme LGA in Rivers State, Hon Brain Gokpa have blamed the Federal Government for its inability to complete the east-west road where an incident occurred which led to the drowning of an Expatiate on the Aleto bridge, for which the remains have been recovered.

A report indicate that the incident happened while the driver of the Hilux Vehicle was reportedly trying to escape from kidnappers who targeted the vehicle along the Eleme axis of the East-West Road.

The Aleto Bridge very close to the Refinery has since been physically distressed with fear of total collapse someday.

Despite the repeated calls for its repair, the Federal Government was yet to take any meaningful action.

The east road which runs across the Aleto Bridge is a critical route for several multinational companies operating in the area, but it has been neglected by the government, leading to countless losses of lives and property at various times preceeding today's incident.

Speaking on the incident, Chief Gokpa said, "This accident is avoidable. It is a direct result of the poor state of the road, which has been neglected by the federal government despite our repeated appeals".

Chief Gokpa also emphasised that the government's inaction is not only costing lives but also undermining the economic development of the region. "It is unacceptable that despite the presence of several multinational companies in the area, the government has failed to provide a safe and reliable road network," he said.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has also visited the scene.

The details of the Expatiate remains sketchy as at press time. But there is an unconfirmed report that the deceased was among the Expatiates brought in by Gov Sim Fubara to revamp the Songhai Farm project in the State.

Leaders from the Orashi Region in Rivers State where a former governor of the State, Sir Dr Peter Odili hails from, have apologized to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike on behalf of their Son.

Gov Sim Fubara of Rivers State has dismissed the existence of the lawmakers loyal to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, insisting that only the lawmakers led by Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo are the recognized ones in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
