Christianity Etc › Re: What My Boss Told Me About My Religious Belief. by urahara(m): 7:42pm On Jun 16, 2016 |
rejosom: One Tuesday afternoon, I just got back from lunch and decided to rest my head a bit on my desk as it has been a stressful day trying a whole lot of different engineering designs to know which one works better for a novel installation we were going to embark on. My Boss (He is a pastor) apparently tired for the same reason walked slowly into the office I guess trying to stretch out and cool off before going back to look at the last design I turned in.
We exchanged the usual oga and boy greetings and without any warning he asked me 'why do you people pray to Mary? . At first I was shocked but I managed to offer a little explanation citing the wedding at Cana and the Behold your mother bible scenes as examples. But that would not convince him (not that I expected him to be convinced anyway) as he went on to preach to me about having only one mediator between God and Man and all that. Then he added, don't you think that by asking Mary to pray for you instead of of you praying directly to your God, you are only undermining the power of grace of Jesus? I thought about that for a second then I asked him whether he believed that Jesus can heal every disease and he answered in the affirmative. I asked him again if he takes drugs and he said yes, then I asked him if he believed that taking drugs undermined the power of Jesus by whose stripes we are healed. He looked at me for a while and said no, shook his head and said to me and I quote "the power of indoctrination can not easily be broken". I asked for explanation and he told me that I have I have been brainwashed from childhood to hold on to these doctrines (for we talked a lot about Mary and the Rosary) and that he will continue praying fro me to break free from them.
Although I laughed at him when he said that I couldn't help thinking to myself at home 'what if he was right?' 'what if I was brainwashed to believe these thing? Well, trust me I quickly dismissed these ideas for I have witnessed personal miracles through the rosary.
Funny enough few weeks later, I was on nairaland (dmandy was the moniker and it has long been deactivated) and the topic of discuss again was Mary and rosary. After a lengthy discussion on the issue someone asked me if any of my prayers through Mary has ever been answered and I was so and glad as I started telling the tale of a period not quite long ago from that time when I was either going to loose my job and defend my Msc project or abandon the thesis for my job (I was supposed to go offshore and there was no alternative) I earnestly prayed my rosary and decided to go for the job. Long story short, I called my course mates that faithful Monday morning and received the good news, the defense has been postponed for a whole two months. I couldn't believe this miracle.... I sang and thanked my lord Jesus and the His dearly beloved mother for this unmerited favor. To my uttermost surprise, my fellow christian asked me 'Don't you think that was a coincidence?' Ewoo! would it still had been anything near a coincidence if I had prayed in Jesus Name without mentioning Mary or the Rosary. Well, I answered that it was nothing like coincidence but deep down I I had a series of "what if's".
What if he was right? What if all the miracles I have been so proud of were mere coincidence? What if my boss was right and that I came to see the Mary as the mother of Jesus because I was told? what if I came to believe that the bible is the word of God because I was told? what if I was brainwashed to think that my belief is superior to other? What if I was I was born in Sokoto (I am from Imo state), would I be a Christian today? What if I was born in China, would it be any difference? What if ......
Oh never mind, some things are better left unattended to but why? U would always see non catholics as lost and non catholics wand always see u as lost as well. Op all i can say is....... .....!......... Keep pondering |

OnaRegina: When my boyfriend and I go out, I make sure to sometimes pay and don't leave him to pay all the time. I think I pay a lot of the time actually. He earns more than me. However, recently, we went out with some friends and when he tried to pay with his card, there was an issue with the POS machine so I had to pay for him and myself. He mentioned that he would give me the cash later for both of us. When we drove to the ATM later, he took out the complete amount (covering both our bills that I had paid). I noticed that he initially counted out the full amount but later only gave me the money he owed for just his own bill. He had told me in front of our friends that he would repay me the amount for both our bills and besides when he attempted to pay using POS at the restaurant, it was for both our bills. So I dont know why he did that.
Also, in the 9 months we've been together, he has never bought me a gift (not even on my birthday or valentines) and at Christmas, he gave me a book he'd just finished reading as my present. To be fair, I didnt give him anything for christmas but I did give him something for his birthday.
When I travelled, I asked him what he wanted and he said nothing as he didnt want to feel obliged to return the kindness. I found that odd. I wasnt trying to buy him something so he could return the favour. Nevertheless, I bought him a small gift anyway.
I spoke to him about it and told him that while I'm not expecting expensive gifts, giving in a relationship is nice. I suggested chocolates or flowers and he said he didnt know etc.
Are my expectations high (based on the brief background I've just given) or is this sounding like a stingy guy to you? I feel a bit resentful but want to be reasonable about the whole thing.
Thanks for your sensible comments/advice. This one no be small thing o |

Christianity Etc › Re: 5 Questions For Atheists by urahara(m): 2:03pm On Jun 16, 2016 |
cloudgoddess: Atheism does not require acceptance of evolution. But obtaining a proper understanding of evolution leads some people to realize that biblical account of creation makes no sense, which leads to them becoming atheists.
Some Christians with a competent understanding of evolution do still believe in god. It takes a ton of cognitive dissonance but it's possible.
Side note before I begin my explanation: Abiogenesis and evolution are two seperate studies. The basic mechanisms behind evolution have been proven beyond reasonable doubt. We know that evolution is the process that's been driving the diversification of life on earth, since the first life forms appeared.
Abiogenesis, which tells us how those first life forms got started in the first place, is still in the works. But regardless of whether or not one accepts abiogenesis, that still does not leave room for a deity who poofed every animal onto earth in their present forms. We know that is impossible because of evolution alone.
So, now for my answer: For us to recreate abiogenesis as it occured on earth ~3.5 billion years ago, we would both have to know exactly what conditions were present during the emergence of the very first self-replicating molecules (which were far simpler than any modern cell, likely a short strand of RNA with a lipid coat), and then be able to manipulate those conditions in a lab setting.
We have made partial progress on those two steps.
We currently know some of the conditions that were implicit in the formation of life. We know that first, the earth had to cool; in it's beginnings Earth was a harsh, blazing hot ball made from the same nebula that formed the sun, completely hostile and unstable for the delicate chemical reactions required for self-replicating molecules to form.
Then an atmosphere had to form. Current evidence says early earth's atmosphere most likely contained carbon dioxide, ammonia, and methane, and little to no oxygen in it's first stages. Lightening storms and volcanic activity were commonplace.
The results of the Miller Urey experiment, conducted in 1950's gave us good evidence that the molecules that act as the building blocks of life (amino acids & nucleotides), could have formed spontaneously on primitive earth, by the interaction of lightening with it's CO2, methane, & ammonia-rich atmosphere, and hot water (from deep sea hydrothermal vents).
https://www.mhhe.com/biosci/genbio/enger/student/olc/art_quizzes/genbiomedia/0049.jpg
This experiment produced over 20 kinds of amino acids, and has been reconducted several times since it's initial run, consistently producing amino acids of varying quantities.
As I said, research on abiogenesis is still being conducted, and just like everything science has ever discovered, it will take time to get to the point of being able to recreate life "from scratch" ourselves, if such a thing would even be desireable (for example, why start from scratch when we can already copy and edit the DNA of pre-existing organisms? it's like typing a message over and over from the beginning instead of just copying and pasting.)
But slowly we're discovering more and more, and the evidence continues to coincinde with natural physical, chemical laws we are familiar with. In other words, there is still no sign of the formation of the first cells, or the organic materials leading up to them, having been a supernatural event. Cloudgodess making me proud since 10 bc. You have still not answered my question on johnnies thread |

sirthisthickkal: I understand what you mean I really do. it's sometimes difficult to believe what you cannot see, besides like they say "seeing is believing". But if we allow that saying to determine the way we live our lives then we will all be heading towards self destruction and mental darkness. You believe that there is gravity, right? But can we see gravity? No! Yet we believe in it because we can feel or sense it and that is what keep our planet plus the whole universe in a balanced state. We all breath in air to survive, don't we? But can we see air! No! Yet we believe in it because we can feel or sense it and that is what keeps us alive. The almighty God has created many things so that we can know he exist even though we can't see him, when we bleed within days we heal, when we sleep we become unconscious and all of the sudden we come back to life so to speak, when we cram something we have the ability to remember exactly the way it was stored for the next 20 years, I can go on and on. All this evidence. After perceiving this things and we marvel at them, don't you think it would be ungrateful of us if we fail to give the credit to the one who created them? how would you feel if people refuse to give you credit for something you worked hard to create or build for their benefits? no doubt you will fill bad perhaps even calling them ingrates. How much more God. Don't you think he really deserves our praises and worship? Yes of course.
Gracias! Atheists dont believe in god not because they cant see him but because there is no evidence for him or her or it. Thank goodness , if all these processes and abilities u have listed shows that they must be a god . then your god construct who is able to do far more than all these also has to have a god and also be grateful to his god . |

Not all atheist accept the theory of evolution just as not all atheist accept that the earth is spherical. The only common denominator for all atheist is the lack of the belief in a god or gods . |

Dejideji1: Answering that question will lead to an infinite regression of causes. And i feel this is where most Atheist miss it. God is not bound by the dimensions of space and time, God is outside of time meaning he has been existing before time began.
He created time so as to achieve cause and effect so that there will be consequences for every action taken. It's only something that is bound by time that can be created (meaning having a beginning) So God doesn't need to be created.
when we talk about eternity (in religion) it simply means timelessness and that is in heaven, the abode of God. As humans we will find it extremely hard to comprehend since we are operating in a system governed by space and time. And u know alk this because......... |
