The United States has said in a statement that Russia “does not recognize the independence of Ukraine”, as it said Moscow has so far mobilized 70 percent of troops it needs to launch the offensive.

The Hisbah Board of Kano State in northern Nigeria says it is illegal to compete in the beauty pageant.

The commission’s chairman, Sheikh Muhammad Harun Ibn-Sina, who made the announcement in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, said competing in the beauty pageant was a form of teaching women to be modest.

He was speaking just days after a young Kano State girl, Shatu Garko, won the 44th beauty pageant.

Shatu, 18, defeated 18 other women at a ceremony on Friday night at the Landmark Center in Lagos.

She is the first hijab woman to win the competition in history and this is the 44th time of the competition which is called Miss Nigeria in English.

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has vowed to reveal the identities of sponsors of insecurity in the state on January 3.

He said 18 suspects arrested by security agencies have named their sponsors.

He promised to reveal their identities and roles at a stakeholders meeting.

At least over 5,000 inmates escaped from Nigerian prisons this year 2021 alone.

According to reports, from January to November, 2021, there were 15 attempted prisons attack, with eight successful.

The most recent was the attack on a prison in Jos, Plateau State, in which it was reported that at least 262 inmates escaped, after the attackers clashed with security forces and were defeated.

But a source in one of the country’s prisons told the BBC Hausa Service, there was negligence on the part of prison officials.

“The first thing I see is negligence on the part of some of the prison staff. And secondly there is negligence on the part of the government especially the governors in enforcing the verdict,” the source said.

Hausa film (Kannywood) actor Sani Garba SK has passed away in Kano on Wednesday after a long illness.

Well known Kannywood producer Abdul M Amart has confirmed to the BBC the actor’s death.

He died at the Muhammadu Abdullahi Wase Hospital in Nasarawa on Wednesday evening.

“Sani SK has been hospitalized for almost three years, but his illness has worsened recently after he spent five weeks in hospital,” Amart said.

Amart added that he was originally suffering from diabetes, which later led to diseases such as kidney, liver and high blood pressure.

Rumors of Sani SK’s death have been widely circulated in the past, with him sometimes denying the claim.

“On the day of his death, he underwent a kidney transplant,” said producer Amart, who is in charge of the care of the deceased.

As the U.S. marks one year since the first shots of COVID-19 vaccine were rolled out last December, some 28% of adults still remain unvaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Now, as the country surpassed 800,000 confirmed deaths from the disease, an analysis by the Peterson Center on Healthcare and the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates 163,000 deaths could have been prevented by vaccination since vaccines became widely available in June.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned citizens, including traditional rulers, politicians and religious leaders, to refrain from engaging in any activity that could lead to lawlessness in the country.

Former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, especially in the north.

Senator Kwankwaso feels that letting the crisis take time and not taking action is why it is now seeking the help of the authorities.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria (EFCC) has said it has uncovered a governor of a northern state who embezzled N60 billion from his state coffers.

The commission made the announcement in a monthly press release titled EFCC Alert.

The EFCC, which quoted its chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa as elaborating on the issue in an interview with a magazine published by the commission, said the identified governor belonged to a state in the North Central region although he did not give his name.

“I can tell you for free that the new department we opened on intelligence is working hard.

“It has uncovered several things. One of them is a governor in a North Central state, where they have discovered that in the last six years (one person) has withdrawn N60 bn in cash.”

The governor of the U.S state of Kentucky said at least 70 people have died as a result of Friday night’s hurricane.

Reports from Northern Nigeria’s Katsina State said a commissioner has been killed by bandits in the State.

Reports from northern Nigeria’s Sokoto State said gunmen have set ablaze a bus carrying at least 42 passengers.

The passengers were reportedly from Sabon Birni Local Government Area of the state migrating to other parts of Nigeria, due to the intensification of bandits activities in their area.

Witnesses told the BBC the incident took place around 9am on Monday.

At least 18 people have drowned in Kenya after a bus on a public holiday overturned on a bridge and flooded.

3. The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions yesterday summoned the Adamawa State Controller of Corrections (CC) to produce a former governor of the state, James Bala Ngilari, before the committee on Tuesday, next week.

Ngilari, who was standing trial before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for embezzling state funds while he served as governor in 2015 was jailed in a correctional facility in the state.

4. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested three suspects at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) while attempting to smuggle 1,144 Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards out of the country.

Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has reiterated the government’s decision to declare bandits in the country, especially in the North West terrorists.

He made the remarks on a Channels political program on Wednesday, December 1.

“In terms of security and the situation in Nigeria and the threat posed by banditry, kidnapping for ransom, instability, and theft, we can see that it is a problem.
