PoliticsRe: Questions For Sanusi Lamido Sanusi by Utaroz(m): 1:18pm On Aug 22, 2009
If the Swiss decide to open a bank in Nigeria, most depositors would prefer to bank with them. Banking business thrives on public confidence and trust. Once these are compromised, the bubble bursts. Let us demand for the highest level of banking standards and stop being distracted by tribal sentiments.

trap203:
NIGERIANS MUST BEWARE OF PROPAGANDA!

Why this talk about EFCC and arrest and detention?

What crimes are the bank chiefs supposed to have committed?

“The CBN accused the sacked bank executives of excessively high level of non-performing loans, attributable to poor corporate governance practices, lax credit administration processes and the absence or non-adherence to the bank’s credit risk management practices,” reads a news report.

Are these also cases for the EFCC now? With all the brazen stealing going on at all levels of government in Nigeria?

The CBN says the Liquidity Ratios of the banks ranged from 17.65% to 24% as at May 31, 2009, while the regulatory minimum is 25%. While don’t you help them attain the minimun threshold, as they’re not too far from it, without behaving like a bull in a China shop?

Please note that the bank chiefs are in most cases the majority owners of these banks. Ibru and Akingbola founded their banks.

These banks are not federal parastatals.

It’s true that central banks have the powers of intervention all over the world, but are sparingly used; mostly in cases when banks are not able to fulfil their obligations to their depositors and creditors. Not to do what Sanusi is presently doing, to dispossess Nigerians of their legitimate properties and award them to members of his Fulani race.

Bankers in the West who plunged the global economy into recession with their reckless investments were not arrested. Most are in fact still at their posts and have started turning their banks around.

Are we all illiterates in Nigeria?

What are banks for when not to give out loans?

Here in Europe, every of our puchases, from household entertainemnt appliances like flatscreen TVs to our cars, are financed by banks. And when you lend out so much, some of the loans will not perform. Because of the recession and the attendant high jobless rates, many European banks are in fact now saddled with hundreds of billions of euros of consumer debts, non-performing loans.

These issues of non-performing loans are just being sensationalised because the schemers know that Nigerians are gullible people.

Which banks anywhere in the world don’t have bad debts?

While I don’t want to hold brief for the debtors, that a company partly owned by Oba Otudeko, for example, has a non-performing loan at a bank does not make him an undesirable element. Businesspeople have investment in many companies, some of which fail.

It goes like this: because Mr Obi Adeyemi Abubakar is a successful businessman, Smart Alec, an entrepreneur with a brilliant idea, approaches him to co-promote his venture. And they both form a limited liability company, say A & A. If unluckily, A & A fails and ends up with a load of debt with banks, you can’t expect Mr Obi Adeyemi Abubakar to pay the debt with his other assets, which have nothing to do with the new venture.

That is the way it’s all over the world.

While Chrysler and General Motors are owing billions, their major/institutional shareholders, who also own shares in other companies cannot be expected to pay the debts of the two automakers with their other assets, which are not connected with Chrysler and General Motors.

And since these are limited liability companies, the assets of the companies are the only eligible assets for confiscation in case of loan default. That is elementary business practice which any educated Nigerian, educated enough to have access to the Internet, should know!

On the issue of Transcorp; this government has repeatedly sabotaged the company because it’s owned by Southerners. All efforts by the company’s management to improve its fortunes were sabotaged by the regulatory agencies.

And when the government finally decided to reverse the sales of Nitel to Transcorp, why has it not refunded their money (500 million US dollars), which they know was borrowed from Nigerian banks? Immediately, they reversed the sale of Nitel, they appointed a Fulani man as the MD. Now they want to sell the company piece-meal to investors because they also cannot manage it.

The true intention of Sanusi is to change the ownership structure of Nigerian banks. He says he wants to call in so-called core investors to shore up the capital basis of these banks. But there is a catch to it. He would first as a punitive measure deplete the original shareholders funds by using them to pay the non-performing loans given out by the banks. Which in essence means that they want to sell the banks for peanuts to their preferred Fulani investors.

Please let us think! Time to start resisting Fulani colonialism is now!
The caption for your write-up was quite an irony. While warning Nigerians to be wary of propaganda, you went ahead and dished out a beautiful propaganda piece, whipping up every known sentiment in the book but unfortunately, with scant faith to facts. I dont intend to join issues on tribal grounds, but it is apparent those CEOs were not running the banks professionally. Yes, one of the primary functions of the bank is to drive economy through the disbursement of credit facilities. However, this must be guided by some strict rules since the funds in their custody belong to depositors. These rules were not adhered to. Some of the banks granted facilities above the obligor limit while most didnt bother to follow the due process.

The risk of letting the sleeping dogs lie would be to allow this sore to fester into cancerous proportions. The CEOs must learn that being custodians of people's money, they have the responsibility to safeguard it and not hand it to anyone who happens to ask for it. This exercise will make bank chiefs to be more prudent and disciplined in their credit decisions.
Arrests and detention is a routine measure during fraud investigations and there is nothing special in the case of these five people. It is only the guilty that need to be afraid of indictment. Those in glass houses should not throw stones. The banks that got a clean bill are not fulani owned. I'm sure if you are lending out your personal money, you'll exercise some caution and ensure to a large extent, that you limit the chances of default.

Let us not view every attempt to sanitize this polity through the prism or tribalism.  embarassed If the Fulani, Kanuri, Idoma or Ijaws are better fund managers, I'd be glad to leave my money in their care!

There really must be so much angst against religious leaders of today. Even the thread on the high scale fraud in the banking industry didnt attract this much attack & controversy.

Christianity EtcRe: Queen Of Sheba Took Off At The Arrival Of Bishop Oyedepo by Utaroz(m): 5:45pm On Aug 21, 2009
Much as we try as human, our wisdom can never comprehend the workings of God. We may chose to believe in His works through men or we may chose not to. This controversy has been existing for millions of years, since before the time of Christ. Theologians, astrologers, scribes and great men of intellect have had at one point or the other, to analyse, interprete and criticize the activities of God through his prophets. Even the Jews doubted Jesus (some till this day) and they have their facts and postulations to prove that. embarassed

I can only advise those fighting in defense of men of God being regularly bashed in public forums like this, to save their energy for better endeavors, while those who delight in proving how they (meen of God) are all a bunch of no-good charlatans, should try and resist the temtation of judging people, especially those who claim to be from God. sad sad

If Jesus were walking the earth today, some of us on this forum will argue that no DNA test has been done to prove his claim to God's parenthood. May every man be led by his own convictions, but enough on this campaign of calumny already!!!
PoliticsRe: Akingbola Defies Efcc; How He Escaped To London by Utaroz(m): 4:53pm On Aug 21, 2009
BAC:
Guys , it is too early to come to conclusions. if the man travelled to London on friday do you expect him to be back in a few days?

It is not good to spoil people's image. I am sure this man is a man of integrity working in an environment polluted by crime. Some are commenting on his residence in Ghana, If you have to opportunity to have residence abroad I am sure you will do the same. But as you don't have keep your mouth shut, if not God can never promote you to that level

so guys leave the guy alone. To run a bank is not easy. That the debtors cannot pay the money they owe does not necessarily mean the bankers did not follow due process. And at the end of the day bankers are there to take risk.

So keep your mouths shut. and watch,
Bros, I dont know the depth of your understanding of the banking profession. The CBN as a regulator, and through the provisions of the banking laws, found these people wanting in the manner they disbursed those credits. There were also cases of conducts inimical to the banking profession alleged against them. If your man is a person of high integrity (as you appear ready to die for), now is hardly the appropriate time to travel to UK (via Ghana). He is answerable to numerous customers who entrusted their monies to his bank. He has every opportunity to vindicate himself but chose to travel unceremoniously thereby drawing attention and more negative publicity to himself. cheesy cheesy cheesy grin grin grin cheesy cheesy

It is not easy to run a bank, we know; that is more reason why it should be left to those who should run it well. There is hardly any call to spew curses at people for speaking up about an issue that affects the financial system of a nation. undecided undecided huh huh
PoliticsRe: John Nwodo Arrested By Sss For Inciting Army To Interfere In Politics by Utaroz(m): 8:36am On Aug 21, 2009
An ex minister like Chief Nwodo understands the full implication of his statements. Those statements of his did appear like a call to action. The questions are;

Has he exhausted other advisory means to the present government on the means of curbing the deteriorating security situation? huh

Would he in all honesty make those suggestions if he is in the mainstream of this present administration? undecided undecided

He may be speaking from sincere convictions but being a thorough-bred politician, it may not be impossible that he was also using the forum to throw some indirect barbs at those who schemed him out of relevance. cheesy

Just imagine for one moment, if Lamido Sanusi came in as CBN guvnor in the hey-days of Nuhu Ribadu. cheesy smiley grin And with a sincere government in power, They'd have between themselves, rid the country of these greedy monsters in less than two years!

Let's shed every personal sentiment and appreciate the passion of well meaning Nigerians. Sanusi means well. How the law enforcers treat the defaulters is another matter entirely.

Akingbola has already obtained the permission from a Federal High court in Lagos to challenge his sack, undecided

Let's watch the thickening plot as the drama unfolds wink
BusinessRe: Petrol Station Attendants; The New Money Makers by Utaroz(m): 6:38pm On Aug 18, 2009
I have observed over time that the capacity of my car tank differs in each gas station & location. While the margin is relatively thin at Lagos & FCT, it tends to expand as I travel eastwards - Aba, Onitsha, Owerri, P.H, Enugu, Uyo etc. ;DPrices of petrol in these parts of the country are negotiable. You will see the signpost advertising at N65 per litre but if you are naive enough to assume it is the actual price, you may encounter an unprecedented embarassment. cheesy

The gas stations in these areas also come with very creative names, Jo-jo Oil, Odinga Pet, Nwakanma Oil etc. grin

If you come with a jerry can to these places, minimum deposit is N200 flat, then pump price will average N70!

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS cheesy grin wink
EventsRe: How Do You Tell Him That You Hate Your Engagement Ring by Utaroz(m): 6:00pm On Aug 18, 2009
If he loves you enough to wish to marry you, he'd be glad to change the ring to something you are comfortable with. I believe the issue here is not the value of the ring, but the design?   huh

But i'd expect a smart bloke who has wooed his chic over time to have an inkling on her tastes in jewelry, undecided
Christianity EtcRe: Is It Ok To Pay My Tithes To Different Churches? by Utaroz(m): 3:08pm On Aug 18, 2009
There is no call to let off steam here. The question was neither asking for the validity, nor the rationale for tithing. The choice has been made already (and the controversy on tithing have been seriously over-flogged in the past here) , so let us stick to the question raised.

@ poster: I dont think it really matters whichever church one pay his tithes; so long as it is get's to the Lord's storehouse.
CelebritiesRe: Breaking News! Pete Edochie Is Freed At Last by Utaroz(m): 2:45pm On Aug 18, 2009
It's great celebrating the Return of The Iroko, but the bleak fact is that 3 people have been reported kidnapped in the past 4 hours already. Unfortunately, they may not receive the same prominence enjoyed by the Edochie saga.
