Quite unfortunate but It has been the way of the world like you rightly pointed out. Empires are forged from human strength. Strength of the weak. Barbaric slavery has been replaced with an even more receptive civilized slavery. Knowledge gives power and wealth, parameters that define who's captive and who's free. While I don't agree with the medium of development achievement by the Emirate I do understand that at every point in time in human history there will always be people, the weak who'd be preyed upon because of their lack of knowledgethat which makes us free men and a predisposition to survival first.
Let us not cry too much for the bereaved cos if we looked closer to home we'd see a replication of the ''Dubaiesque treatment'' if not by us, then by our kinsmen in the manner we treat our househelps.

Abeg joor! All these westerners!! Their focus is now on China. Wait until Africa begins to develop . . . . . .

The lessons I've learnt from all these is that infrastructure development is done by cheap labour. Egypt did it with the Jews, Europe and America did it with Africans, Dubai is doing it with indians and the like and so on and so fault. . . . . .

Question is who will Africans use when our time comes??

Nigeria once had it in sight but missed the mark due to tribal sentiments. If we get another chance our cheap labour will be from within us cos we got the population and unskilled manpower unlike the Emirate has never been in short supply. We have a blueprint already of this-the NLNG project in Bonny during its first 3 trains employed alot of unskilled manpower and gave jobs to the many unemployed! If we can set aside nepotism and greed for once we can have a set timeline and plan to replicate the Dubai feat with an even less hostile environment unlike the Emirati desert.
Its doable and by us.

Article is crap jare.
I don't know why Europeans and Americans want to have it all their way in every country they go to.
Dubai is cool. Just go there, take a chill pill, enjoy the efizi, and hightail it back home. Arabs generally are not the best people to work for, but they're okay so long as you understand them and ride out their excesses.
If you're in doubt, just try working with some Asians (Indians/Chinese). Then  you go learn say Jim Reeves once sang fuji grin
Dubai is cool in the short term(now) especially for the visitor who comes and goes and the Emirate has done above well for her citizenry, but the challenge of sustaining the growing populace from within a very hostile environment ( water resource) will test the will of the builders of this once arid land.

@Elowa,

I can go on to hammer on our being multi-tribal as a reason for the various mis-step but the truth is we missed the mark just after the British left. Those with nationalistic ideas( which is evident in Dubai) got trapped somewhere along the lines in tribal and ethnic sentiments. The chaos we witness and are yet to begin to address is a fallout of founding fathers who missed it and children who would rather not learn from their fathers mistake. We don't have a plan for anything and how we expect to succeed is utter folly.

The write up has got Ethiopians running around the Emirate as nannies as well cheesy

What I kept wondering about while reading through this article is what the governments of these countries are doing diplomatically to take care of their citizens. It is really sad.
Yes it is, but for them it is a workable blueprint to much desire success. As you'll find the majority of Emiratis care less about how they've become wealthy overnight as all they need and desire is granted by their governement. It is the same blueprint Hitler used, give the people what they desire and you have almost total control of their mind.

Reminds me of a saying, ''the more things change the more they remain the same''. while whatever has gone on ain't right, it is the way of the world. Today the GCC's (Dubai especially) have found a way albeit exploitative and nefarious to build their dream nation via the strength of the weak asian, yesterday it was the immigrant Americans and Brits oiling the foundation of their respective nations through the sweat of black slaves, people just like your today asian slave worker. Nothing really has changed and the exploitation of the weak will continue in this life.

Innosson products are unbelievably high quality. I was amazed at the caliber of products they had. I have been in those cars myself, and have been in different parts of the world driving different cars. I guarantee you that the quality of those cars will rival any car maker in the world. His young company is impressive and we should be proud of him. Quality is not his problem, patronage from Nigerian government and Nigerian people is and if i were him, i wil shop around and invade other willing african countries with those products. We should Celebrate Everything Good that comes out of Nigeria not condemn it.
Reading through these posts, i can see ethnic sentiments and biases. Its not about the man, its about All of Nigeria and the pride we take in ourselves. SHAME ON SOME OF YOU ETHNIC PIGS.
Instead of rambling and name callingwhich frankly tells alot about the caller why not channel your energy towards promoting Innoson intelligibly by giving us hard facts about mileage-to-fuel ratio, how its suspension & transmission systems works equally as good as what is in the market, even better; statistical facts like these will more than move a pessimistic Nigerian to try the product, or you don't think so? People's natural instinct and allegiance to a product is first to quality; naim make u go hear even a lower class Nigerian respond with an ''e go last if i buy am?'' retort. So my friend it ain't all about putting out a Nigerian product just for the sake of it, its about meeting and surpassing already exisiting standards in the market that will gaurantee sales and longevity of Innoson. If e good like you say it is, I expect Ekenedilichukwu, Young Shall grow, and the lot of them to give it a go, after all charity they say begins at home, abi?
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Government Patronising Nigerian Products by Vavavoom(m): 9:19am On Aug 04, 2010
Horus:
The Nigerian Gouvernment is right to patronise Nigerian products. There are no Nigerian restaurants in Chinatown and there certainly is no Chinese Food restaurant in Chinatown owned and operated by a Nigerian family. If a Nigerian person tried, the business would be shut down, before it started. Why??, Economic Violence. Every group of people understands practices and strategically utilizes the concept of economic violence, except Nigerian people. In fact the economic violence that we, as Nigerian people, practice is economic violence against ourselves. Economic violence is the art and science of using the exchange of money for goods and/or services as an aspect of ethnic warfare, survival and prosperity. The Chinese will not support a Nigerian business over their own, because they are not interested in ethnic suicide. The Chinese are logical, as self preservation is the most basic of human instincts. So not only will a Chinese person not support a Nigerian business over a Chinese business, they take it one step further and plant their business in a Nigerian community and implement plans to take Nigerian people's money. This ideological posture is pure and scientific economic violence. Replace Chinese with any other ethnic group besides Nigerian, and the picture becomes clearer. The above is not a condemnation of Chinese, Korean, Arab or white businesses at all. It is a condemnation of Nigerian people who have forgotten The "Nigerian First". Every ethnic group has mastered this concept except Nigerian people. It is in my interest to come from a powerful people. Therefore, my interest is committing economic violence on behalf of Nigerian people. That means purchasing a Nigerian or African person's service or product "first" before I purchase any other race's service or product.
Of course if the product is good every Nigerian that can afford will patronise, not rocket science my friend. Nigerians work to earn money and shouldn't be expected to throw it all away in the name of I-like-my-country. If e good we go buy

It tastes like Cardboard in Nigeria . . . same goes for Wallis Icecream, Uncle Soyo, Milo, etc. However, if you purchase the foreign versions of some of these products, you will immediately taste the difference
I think brand identity should count for something, abi na only profiteering we go dey do here? Everyone finds it convenient to blame the government on every thing but fail to take responsibility for what's under them. Quality shouldn't shrink and must not be compromised otherwise patronage realistically will go south as well. Nevertheless, government has a role in offering tax breaks to companies that strive to keep quality going even in difficult times. Where's is the balance?

The annoying thing is we don't even need to innovate, just to copy and improve on what has been! Yet we have scums in leadership who'd rather feed fat from the till that apportion and use right what is meant for quality education. So sad.

It is the duty of any reasonable government to maintain and improve manufacturing standard.
An investment in quality education should gaurantee that, but we are in that period of care-free corruption, that point where quality and emancipative education isn't valued as  much as stashing dollar notes in Swiss banks. The syndrome of short-sightedness amongst the ruling classpartly due to an indocile following public has stagnated the nation in this place overt dependence on other nations for quality goods and services.
We can find a way to improve on a bad product if we resolve to put education first. Goods, efficient and worthy ones can hardly be qualitative if discovered flaws in their first instance of production are not corrected in future produce. Imporvement is waiting on us, we just need to make the choice to desire and work for the best.
PoliticsRe: We Are Eager To Send Pdp Away, Says Tinubu ! by Vavavoom(m): 2:51pm On Jul 29, 2010
In a country where we don't have statistics of how many people are qualified to vote prior to election one would think these should have been settled long ago:
1. Census to determine how many we are exactly &
2. How many of that lot are qualified to vote.

The multiplier effect will be monumental.
Easy and transparent tallying of votes.
Constructive planning and common sense distribution of scarce wealth to ease weightier matters.
platform for future project scalability, learnings and reviews
Easy means of monitoring birth control( 9ja smaller than Califrornia has an estimated half the population of USA!), as well as movement within towns/villages/district,
Means of providing the much needed security as biometrics should be inclusive in the system.

Voter reregistration is good/welcomed but in this period of election will only serve the purpose of the incumbent-folks who want to win at all cost.
Data collated during census can be used as a reference to checkmate future elections if well developed.
If only the opposition would seek to fight the required battle and place their energy and wits in the right way then corruption will be gradually minimnized.
But in a country where sincerity of purpose is lacking and where class corruption is the order we we'll keep hearing the likes of Tinubu and co utter the usual words-to-appeal public conscience without any groundwork that will bring about concrete positive change in their lives.
PoliticsRe: Why I Formed New Political Party —soyinka ! by Vavavoom(m): 3:38pm On Jul 23, 2010
Okay, good and much needed. Forming the party is one thing grounding and grooming the required people to remain within the created structure and policy is another. Especially in a country of ours where trust between the governor and the governed is non-existent. If the DFPF can find a strucuture under which winning or wrestling power from the ruling PDP ain't the major goal but offering altruistic opposition at primarily the council levels in the forthcoming elections it would have achieved much. What they haven't in money they can give by shadowing the ruling party and therefore check their excesses.  They must aspire to be a party that the average Nigerian can identify with, apsirants who'd meet their people wherever and whenever we call, people we can risk our lives for by peaceful protest when they call on us to do so. Welcome DFPF!

NO SIR!!!!!

The principals in the cases we presented only got found out when the actions became public knowledge

God did not know about Lucifer till he started his rebelion.

G.O did not know till EFCC found him out. If God didnt know Lucifer was gonna rebel, how would you expect G.O to know Akingbola was stealing prior to EFCCs investigations

is G.O Central Bank?

as for Adam and Eve, God got to know when they were hiding their unclothedness? why didnt God shout their names when they were about to eat the fruit? The disciplinary action was after they got found out

G.O got to know after the thing became a public thing and yes, the man was derobed
saying G.O should have known when he was stealing when he isnt the director of banking supervision is erroneous
Maybe you should check the meaning of omniscient before typing the bolded part next time.

wow!, the battle between free capitalist and tread-carefully socialist.
Both parties mean well, just differ in your core interest.
The capitalist are right when they say other developers can and are free to look inwards mainland Lagos and carve out a niche for themselves. I think the onus lie with the socialist to look for such and make their case with such developer(s). Why hang a man when he sees and pursues a well publicize risk with his fortune? Perhaps the reward for his risk are even greater?
If I have learn't anything from the sub prime it is that some measure of control/regulation (institutional) must be in place to prevent any economic system of practise from a complete meltdown. Socialism has its benefits so too does Capitalism. Both parties should harness the advantages from their system with the other and a winning solution will emerge.

I knew a man once who said, "Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back''- MDM from Gladiator.

On the passing of his friend and co-gladiator, Maximus said, Whisper to them that I live only to hold them again, for all else is dust and air- Gladiator

My favourite in the Gladiator series: When a man sees his end he wants to know there has been some purpose to his life, Marcus Arelius. Knowing his passing was near, he called his one and only trusted General, Maximus D. Meridius to seek counsel on what Rome should become, of course Commodus(Jaoquin Pheonix) had other ideas, one of the best movies of mine.
