Nairaland / General / Strike: NARD To Appraise FG Response To Demands by VERQUEST111: 6:15pm On Sep 11, 2017
The leadership of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) says it will meet on Tuesday to appraise the response of the Federal Government to its demands.
The federal government in a meeting with the leadership of NARD which held on Sept. 6, agreed to pay the arrears of salaries latest by Sept. 8.
Dr Arikawe Adeolu, a member of the National Executive Council of NARD, told NAN in Abuja on Monday that the meeting would allow the leadership appraise the events since its meeting with government.
Adeolu, who is also the General Secretary of NARD, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, said the outcome of the appraisal would determine whether the nationwide indefinite strike would be called off or not.
He said the appraisal was necessary as more than 90 per cent of members were yet to receive their arrears as at 3 p.m of Sept. 11.
He expressed optimism that the arrears would be paid as the federal government claims it has disbursed the arrears to the hospitals accordingly.
“We were supposed to hold a meeting on Sept. 8 but it didn’t hold because the essence of the meeting was defeated
“We thought that government would have paid by then but we got nothing so the meeting has been postponed to September 12; it will be a closed door meeting to carry out an appraisal of events so far.
“The federal government claims that money has been paid to the hospitals so we need to confirm from members across the country is they have received their salary arrears.
“Money is not usually paid directly to doctors; it is sent to the hospitals so what we are trying to do now is to verify whether the money has come into the hospitals for onward payment.
“Today and tomorrow is enough time for this money to be disbursed to doctors if it really has been paid. By tomorrow we should have a clear view of whether this money has been paid or not,” Adeolu said.
Adeolu had earlier said some of the agreements reached with the federal government could not be fulfilled immediately except the payment of salary arrears to members.
The association on Wednesday met with the Ministers of Health and his Labour, Prof. Isaac Adewole and Dr Chris Ngige, respectively.
The purpose of the meeting was to find ways on how to end the strike.
The doctors are protesting the sack of some of their colleagues, non-payment of “skipping’’ entitlement, non-inclusion in the IPPIS platform and non-payment of their salary arrears, among others.
The industrial action commenced on Sept. 4.
Education / Grade ‘A’ University Cut-off Marks: by VERQUEST111: 11:58am On Sep 11, 2017
The Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU) Ile-Ife in Osun state, South West Nigeria and the University of Nigeria(UNN) Nsukka, South East Nigeria, with forty-one (41) other prominent universities owned by the Federal, State and Private individuals and organizations have minimum cut-off marks of between 180-200 for admissions into their respective institutions, the Economic Confidential can report authoritatively.
Cut-off points
In a painstaking search and carefully computed data from Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the National Universities Commission, various tertiary institutions in Nigeria, the computations of the Economic Confidential indicate that these higher institutions are regarded as Grade ‘A’ Universities of choice as they can accommodate students with minimum of 180-200 scores in JAMB tertiary matriculation examination.
Apart from the above, most of them are first and second generation federal Universities and they have set higher standards of education comparable to other higher-grade institutions in the country.
These institutions include but not limited to the following:- University of Benin, University of Ibadan, St Albert The Great Major Seminary(Affiliated to UNIBEN), University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Afe Babalola UIniversity, Ado-Ekiti, Covenant University, Ota in Ogun state, Ekiti State University, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger state, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Bayero University Kano, University of Ilorin and 29 others.
Investigations further reveal that there are other tertiary institutions in the country considered as Grade ‘B’ with minimum cut-off marks of between 150-170 and foremost among them is the Adamawa State University, Mubi, Babcock University Ilishan-Remo, Ogun state; Redeemers University, Ogun State; American University of Nigeria (AUN) Yola; Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, Oyo State; Baze University, Abuja; Kwararafa University, Wukari, Taraba state, and seventy-four(74) other institutions cutting across Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education owned by federal, state and private individuals and organizations.
These institutions categorized as Grade ‘B’ are categorized as first and second generation federal, states and private universities and polytechnics. The private universities in this category use the cut-off marks to woo intending student applicants for their courses apart from sustaining their revenue generation drive to stay afloat.
Furthermore, the investigations also show that there are cut-off marks between 100-145 who still get admissions into institutions of higher learning in the country and are categorized as grade ‘C’.
They are among the 167 universities, polytechnics, Colleges of Education and other institutions owned by federal, state and private individuals and organizations.
They include but not limited to the following: Bauchi State University; Federal College of Forestry, Jos, Plateau State; Federal University Gashua, Yobe state; University of Mkar, Gboko, Benue state; Adeleke University, Ede, Osun state; Catholic Institute of West Africa, Port-Harcourt: Wesley University Ondo; Tansian University Anambra; Ibadan City Polytechnic Oyo; Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Delta State, Trinity Polytechnic Uyo and 156 other institutions across the country.
Economic Confidential search further reveals that Nigerians institutions of this grade have many attractions for a large number of students’ applications for admission due mainly to the fact that most of these applicants are either denied admissions due to low cut-off marks which the two categories “A” and “B” would not condone and certainly admitted by the grade ‘C’ category.
However, using the JAMB’s report of most preferred universities in the country, the Economic Confidential gathered that applicants seeking admission into universities considered academic stability, popularity, affordability, available facilities and quality of lecturers as part of their checklist before making choices in their applications.
The tertiary institutions’ minimum admission cut-off mark was a collective decision of stakeholders in the education sector. The Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede insisted that stakeholders in education sector unanimously agreed on the minimum cut-off marks for the 2017 academic year. He said: “What JAMB did was a recommendation, we only determined the minimum, whatever the various institutions determine as their admission cut-off mark is their decisions. The Senate and academic boards of universities should be allowed to determine their cut-off marks.”
JAMB has also introduced a Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) which has provision for candidates to track their admission and raise queries when they feel cheated. The system allows candidates to check the admission status and accept /reject courses offered whilst being considered by other universities who can have access to data of all applica
Sports / Wenger Revealed Why He Tuned Down Manchester United by VERQUEST111: 9:33am On Sep 11, 2017
Arsene Wenger has revealed why he turned down the chance to manage Manchester United.
The Frenchman has stayed loyal to Arsenal since joining them in 1996, although former United chairman Martin Edwards has revealed that the Red Devils offered him the chance to replace Sir Alex Ferguson.
Arsenal 7/1 to win Europa League
Edwards claimed in his autobiography: "Our first choice was Arsene. Since joining Arsenal in 1996 Wenger had been greatly successful, especially in his first full season in charge when he won the Double.
"And while it's true to say he suffered hard times since, at the time we thought he was the best candidate to replace Alex. Certainly he was my number one choice.
"So we made our approach and Wenger did show a little bit of interest, enough to want to meet Peter Kenyon and me at his house in London to listen to what we had to say."
Wenger has found his position at the Emirates Stadium come under intense scrutiny in recent years but says that, while the United job was "attractive", he never felt the need to quit the Gunners.
“I was always happy here, people were happy with me and I was always happy,” he said.
“I love the values of this club and, for me, a club is about values first. One day it would be a good chat to have with the press to look at the evolution.
“You speak about Man United, the evolution in the last 20 years would be very interesting. A lot has changed but when I came here this club was about values that I love in sport. That is why I am still in the competition.
“I always question myself. Yes, of course, Man United is attractive but am I happy here? The answer was 'yes'.
“It is too long to talk about that but I think it is quite an interesting subject that you know certainly as well as I do, but a lot has changed.
“When I arrived here we were 80 people, today we are 700. Sometimes I cross somebody inside our club who I know, that is quite new. Most of them I don’t know anymore. We have changed a lot.”
Wenger, now 67, signed a two-year contract extension with Arsenal in the summer.
