Politics › Muslim Student Body Asks Organs To Suspend Use Of Twitter by VEXT(op): 8:31am On Jun 09, 2021
The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria has asked its area councils, branches, and professional fora in local governments, schools, and higher institutions across Lagos State to suspend the use of Twitter for publicity and other operations.

The society’s president in Lagos, Miftahudeen Thanni, made this known in a press statement on Tuesday.

The organisation’s directive comes after the Federal Government of Nigeria suspended the operations of Twitter in the country on June 4 and a subsequent directive by the National Broadcasting Commission to television and radio stations.

In a notice to its organs, the MSSNLagos said, “Kindly suspend the addition of Twitter handles/addresses and icon(s) on MSSNLagos publicity materials (texts, electronic or printed).

“This notice is hereby directed to the leadership of all organs and hierarchies in the Area Unit. This takes immediate effect.”

Mr Thanni explained that while the Federal Government may not be doing enough in other areas, such as security, the MSSNLagos is convinced that defying the government’s directive suspending Twitter is unnecessary.

He explained that though Muslim students have been victims of human rights violations and harassment through the denial of their rights to wear hijab, the recent moves by the Federal Government are needed.

“No sane organisation would support actions against freedom of expression and association and the Federal Government must avoid policies and actions against press freedom. This is despite that the unity of Nigeria is paramount and must be defended.

“While we believe that social media, including Twitter, can be better regulated beyond suspension, we will defend the sovereignty of Nigeria which should not be toyed with. The double standards employed by Twitter on sensitive happenings of #EndSARS and destruction by IPOB members cannot be ignored.

“As much as we hope that the president acts swiftly on issues of insecurity and shows leadership, Twitter must ensure that its platform is not used to escalate crisis and mobilise attackers of the nation’s infrastructure. We appeal to the Federal Government and Twitter to find a common ground. Until this is done, we will obey the suspension order.

“The Federal Government has to look into restoring orderliness beyond suspension and address other sundry issues affecting Nigeria.

“Like many Nigerians, we are unhappy with happenings in the country. For some time, security challenges have risen at an alarming rate. The country’s education and judicial sectors have been consistently hit by strikes. There are other issues that the FG should consider paying greater attention to.”
Mr Thanni, who reiterated that MSSNLagos is against calls for secession, condemned the killings of people in Igangan area of Oyo State and abduction of students in different parts of the country.

“We are for one Nigeria,” he said.

“The call for secession will further compound the problems of Nigeria and it is not in any way the solution to the challenges facing the country. We are against the removal of any leader through undemocratic means.

“It is high time we all helped the government to tackle some of the challenges it is facing. Things have gone beyond being partisan or excessively regional or religious.

“The killings of people in Igangan is not only senseless but wicked. Rather than join the blame game, we will continue to pray to God to heal our nation and expose those behind the evil deeds. We pray to Him to give us leaders that have the love of the people.”

Politics › BREAKING: Protest In Abuja As Northern Group Demands Referendum by VEXT(op): 2:02pm On Jun 05, 2021
A group of women under the aegis of the Amalgamation of Northern Women Associations, on Saturday, demanded a referendum to allow Biafran agitators to chose whether or not to remain in Nigeria.

The coordinator of the group, Hadiza Adamu, spoke on behalf of other members, during a protest in Abuja, on Saturday.

She said, “Nigerian History has shown that women carry the heavy burden of war and acts of insurrections and terrorism. We have gone through it from 1967 to 1971, our men died and left us with the children to cater for out of nothing, other men that survived simply moved on but we never moved on.

“The aftermath of the war and the sufferings left lifetime scars in our hearts and on our bodies. It is for this reason that we (have) come together today and say we don’t want another war, another insurrection.

“We, therefore, unanimously call on President Muhammadu Buhari as the leader and father of the country; and the leadership of the National Assembly, President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawal; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; to immediately call for a referendum in the country.

“Let people choose to live in peace in Nigeria or leave, any other group or nationality that wants to secede to exercise their rights of self-determination like the South-East has been agitated for decades to be allowed to leave Nigeria peacefully, without resorting to a second civil war.

“Today the Igbo nation has turned the entire South-East to almost a war zone, northerners irrespective of their tribes are no longer safe, states’ infrastructures are no longer safe, service personnel from police to army are not safe, INEC offices and other symbols of democracy in the country are being destroyed on daily basis, our husbands that go to do business in South-East no longer return home safe, our political leaders who travel to the South-East on national assignments are assassinated in broad daylight.”

Politics › Constitution Review: CAN Seek Ban Of Under 18 Marriages In Nigeria by VEXT(op): 8:35am On Jun 04, 2021
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has advocated that 18 years should be the minimum age for marriage in the country.

The Christian body disclosed this at the ongoing public hearing organized by the House of Representatives Special Committee On The Review Of The Constitution in Akure, Ondo State capital.

According to the CAN President, Olasupo Ayokunle, the position was made in order to protect underage citizens from early marriage and abuse.

Ayokunle, who was represented by the Ondo State CAN Chairman, John Oladapo, while presenting the position of CAN at the public hearing lamented that the girl-child has been exposed to series of indecent tradition in some parts of the country.

CAN also advocated the rights of females, to contest or seek appointment based on equal opportunities that secure their active participation in politics.

“It should be made a law that anybody below the age of 18years is not matured enough for marriage across the nation. That’s the submission.

“We recommend that the constitution shall bring clarity and emphasis to recognising and affirming eighteen years as the age of maturity and that for sexual consent.

“Guarantee for the rights of women and girls, females, to contest or seek appointment based on equal opportunities that secure their active participation in politics.”

Crime › Pakistan Overturns Christian Couple's Blasphemy Death Sentences by VEXT(op): 6:51am On Jun 04, 2021
A Pakistani court has overturned a death sentence handed down to a Christian couple for blasphemy, citing a lack of evidence.

Shagufta Kausar and her husband Shafqat Emmanuel were convicted in 2014 for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

But on Thursday, the couple's lawyer Saif ul Malook said the Lahore High Court had acquitted them.

A prosecution lawyer told the Reuters news agency that the latest ruling would be challenged.

Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan, and though no-one has ever been executed for it, dozens have been killed by mobs after being accused.

"I am very happy that we were able to get the release of this couple who are some of the most helpless people in our society," Mr Malook told the AFP news agency.

He said he expected the pair to be freed next week after the court orders are published.

Human rights groups have welcomed the ruling.

"Today's decision puts an end to the seven-year long ordeal of a couple who should not have been convicted nor faced a death sentence in the first place," Amnesty International's South Asia Deputy Director Dinushika Dissanayake said in a statement.

What were the couple accused of?
The married couple were convicted in 2014 of sending blasphemous text messages insulting the Prophet Muhammad to a local imam from a phone number registered in Ms Kausar's name.

But her brother told the BBC last year that the couple were innocent, and he doubted they were literate enough even to have written the abusive messages.

Ms Kausar worked as a caretaker in a Christian school, whilst her husband is partially paralysed.

Human rights groups say blasphemy allegations are frequently used to settle personal scores or target religious minorities

The couple's lawyer told the BBC last year that in their trial they suggested a Christian neighbour they had argued with might have purchased a SIM card in Shagufta Kausar's name and sent the messages in order to frame them.

In April, the European Parliament passed a motion condemning Pakistan for failing to protect religious minorities, focusing on the case of Ms Kausar and Mr Emmanuel.

Blasphemy convictions are often eventually overturned on appeal in Pakistan. Last year, Asia Bibi left the country after more than a decade in prison, having been acquitted by the Supreme Court. The verdict led to violent protests by hardline religious groups.

Urhobo youths in Niger Delta
The UPU opined that the collective peace enjoyed in the nation until now is as a result of the collective peaceful behavorial attitude of all citizens and no single individual or tribe has the monopoly of violence.

The statement said: “The UPU Youthwing takes into cognizance recent security issues in the South-East and we shall not watch while things go wrong.

“We are calling on the Imo State Government, Ohaneze-Ndigbo to call their indigenous security network and the IPOB to order, that all Urhobo indigents residing in the South-East or serving there should be treated as the mother hen with utmost care.

“That the Ohaneze-Ndigbo should give to the Urhobo nation detailed information on the whereabout and condition of an Urhobo indigene serving under the Nigeria Immigration service (NIS )in Imo State as the Chief Provost Officer named OKIEMUTE MRERE .

“That the detailed information and whereabout of the aforementioned should be made public to Urhobo nation by the Imo State Government, Ohaneze-Ndigbo, ESN, IPOB on or before 14days time.

“That failure to do so may attract very serious actions that wouldn’t be beneficial to anyone.

“That as a people we want to restate that we are not part of Biafra and can never be part of Biafra.

“That we are Urhobo ethnic nationality, that we can never be cowed into any unholy alliance that did not seek our consent and approval.

“That we rather continue in one Nigeria than joining a system that we know little or nothing about.

“That the casualty recorded by Urhobo indigenes mostly those whom die through the nussle of the Biafran militia guns is still fresh in our mind.

“That we want an indivisible nation that does not translate to folery and laziness.

“That Urhobo nation is one of the most peaceful ethnic group in Nigeria, that our peaceful nature does not translate to cowardice and any further aggressive attack on our indigene in the South-East shall meet equivalent of same action.

“That we shall not watch any Urhobo indigene being slaughtered under the guise of secessionist agitation.

“We equally call on all Urhobo sons and daughters who are security personnel in South-East to follow the directive of the Ag Inspector General Police Usman Baba, not only defend themselves but look for those criminals and slay them all.

“We therefore call on His Excellency Hope Uzodinma the Executive Governor of Imo State to produce our son Mr Okiemute Mrere alive and healthy within 14days of the above publication.”
