The 4th World Youth Congress will bring 600 of the world's most dynamic young activists in the field of sustainable development to Québec from 120 different countries. The congress offers a unique opportunity to meet and work alongside young people who are really doing things and going places. This event sets a new standard for international youth events, and will be the largest and most inspirational gathering of its kind for young people taking place anywhere in the world in 2008. There is a strong role at the Congress for young journalists, cultural performers (e.g. dancers / actors / film makers / musicians), as well as for those with an interest in sustainable development, but less personal experience in this area. Delegates will join forces with young Canadians to undertake hands-on community action projects across Québec, and will help shape international policy by documenting and showing governments what young people are doing to achieve the MDGs. The congress will be take place from the 10th to the 21 of August 2008 Check this site for further details http://www.wyc2008.qc.ca |

It is still possible to enter a country with just a day to the expiration of your visa but not in some countries like canada. There was a case of a friend who had two days left in his visa b4 travelling to canada , at the port of entry he was almost returned home if not he declared asylum. Your personality will definitely determine your stay sometimes irrespective of your visa. In countries where your visas are given at port of entry the bta on you determines the longevity of your stay as barbados, cyprus, qatar, jordan, latvia |
Timaya was last week seen chasing a girl who came with her boy friend at the banquet reception for the vp's dad in yenagoa. The girl i was told didn't know who he was, if not for a journalist guy from one TV3 in LAGOS WHO was the go between. The girl later called the journalist guy asking if truly thats was timaya .but she made a confession to say that she will rather have a fling wit the journalist than flirting Nigerian musicians |
Abagana was a very humble young man who started from zero, but made fame and fortune from comedy. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. I sympathise with the family, commitee of comedians and friends. I do hope there wll be a kind of memorial by comedians in the country. RIP |
Undoubtedly Chelsea players at the nations cup have been outstanding. King of the pack- Didier Drogba, following in that order is Ghana'a Michael ESSIEN ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, kaloue and MIKEL have been outstanding , all have scored Up chelsea |
Without aking anything away from your postion , the players of the super Eagles have been disappointing. Mikel Obi is over rated, but the truth must be told, he's A first team player with Chelsea FC, who is toe blamed for the hype. Ferguson and Mourinho, man u and chelsea for dragging who to sign him from norwegien club. Berti vogts can't qualify Nigeria to South Africa 2010. Prevention is better than cure |

Apam and Okonkwo have no business playing in the highest level for Nigeria. I still believe Nigeria play in the finals irrespective of who plays outside this 2 guys. |
What a way to lose to a team that you've lost to in closeto a decade. Sad as it may be, Arsenal will suffer similar defeats in the coming days from Man u at Old traffod and Chelsea at Stamford bridge. Arsenal fans please tell your captain Gallas to be more professional on the field of play, his bullyish style on some this young guns will be detrimental to all titleambitions this season. |

I have a better reason for you to apply for a uk visa. You want to know contact vikiviko2002@yahoo.com |
Not in all cases, i have seen people who applied for studeny visas, even after paying 10,000 they still get appeals or refusals. The use of fake documents sometimes cannot be expantiated by the Ecos, how can they reconcile a case where someone presents a bank statement from a Community bank and its said to be fake. As i know some of this community banks are not on the website. So the issue of verifying is deemed to be impossible, whereas they have fonenumbers and addresses that the embassy never checks. What obstacle do you expect to face in applying what you learn into your daily work? The letter should also include one pitch for a story idea on how to expose or prevent corruption in the public or private sector of Nigeria. Its a wonderful book for men aspiring to the top. People are always skeptical and uniformed about books like this because its a psycho philosophical book. |
With the success of the various conventions by various churches in December, don't you think the Church is a viable platform to transform Nigeria's tourism potentials. If you were at any church convention last december ,please share your experiences with the forum. I attended the EXPERIENCE, and it was a great success considering the mammoth crowd, quality music, personalities that attended and security. Will tell you more about the last Experience. Later |

IT was a big Christmas surprise as the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) released its executive summary of tourism events during the Christmas period. The big evangelical churches pulled over 15 million people to their retreat grounds and kept them there for seven days generating N90 billion (about $890 million). For a country just launching its Tourism Master plan, it's a welcome news that for once there were figures to show there was active domestic tourism even though it was of religious kind. Outside oil and the movies that have made Nigeria popular worldwide, the Nigerian Evangelical Churches are the fastest growing Christian organisation in the world. They are popular all over Africa and in the West. One of the churches, the Redeemed Christians Church of God just opened a new headquarters in Floyd, Texas. These churches are so popular worldwide that they have branches even in countries without Nigerian Embassies. According to Director General NTDC Otunba Segun Runsewe the "Holy Ghost Congress" at Ibafon near Lagos of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) attracted over three million people from 34 countries, 14 African and 20 non African Countries spending over $10 million on accommodation and feeding in seven days, by the foreign delegates and about N22 billion (about $200 million) by the domestic delegates on accommodation, feeding, souvenirs, olive oil, cassettes etc and transportation. Runsewe also said that the "SHILOH" by the Winners Chapel another evangelical church attracted 4.5 million people for its annual congress at Otta near Lagos in Nigeria's southwest. Winners Chapel has the largest church building in the world, which seats over 50,000 adherents. It also has a very modern Covenant University and its leader Dr. David Oyedepo flies around in a private jet. "Shiloh" attracted delegates from 35 countries 12 African and 23 non African countries that spent eight days. The foreign delegates spent just $1.5 million on accommodation, while the Nigerian delegates spent about $630 million on accommodation, transportation, souvenirs, olive oil and so on in over eight days. Figures from the retreat of another mega church The Deeper Life Bible Church and Christ Embassy were not made available by the agency. Another Christian organisation though not accepted by the Evangelicals as one of their own" The Synagogue Church" attracts about 60,000 foreigners every year from Korea, South Africa, and The Scandinavian countries to its Lagos based centre. Also The House on the Rock with its mega Musical concert called , THE EXPERIENCE attracted over 10,000 foreigners. The capacity at the TBS was over 300,000. Foreigners fROM VARIOUS COUNTRIES GRACED THE OCCASION.Notably renowned American preacher TD Jakes. The figure from NTDC confirms what has been an unofficial belief that the mega churches annual congresses attract more people to the Lagos Area in December than any other gathering in the world. Scary figures you may say. |

The Committee to Protect Journalists’ (CPJ) year-end analysis indicates that it has been the most deadly one for journalists over the past decade. With eight more deaths than last year, 64 journalists were killed in connection to their work and a further 22 are being investigated. Deaths rose across Africa as well; last year two lives were claimed while ten were during the course of 2007. Behind Iraq, the second highest number of journalist murders (7 deaths) took place in Somalia. CPJ Executive Director, Joel Simon remarked on the country’s “increasingly deteriorating environment” and that “journalists in Somalia face great risks every day.” In one case, prominent journalist, Mahad Ahmed Elmi, director of Capital Voice radio in Mogadishu, died after being shot four times in the head. Mounting to this incident was the death of HornAfrik Media co-owner Ali Iman Sharmarke. A remotely detonated landmine took his life upon leaving Elmi's funeral. Two journalists also died in Eritrea and one in Zimbabwe in 2007. A final list of journalists killed in 2007 will be released by CPJ on 2 - Nadjikimo Benoudjita, editor of the private weekly Notre Temps, in Chad, who was arrested and charged with "inciting tribal and religious hatred" last week, was released on 17 December until further summoned. Alongside the editor’s pending troubles with the court, the paper is also facing a dim future: the police officers informed Nguémadki Dkimasngar, the weekly's editor-in-chief, of the information and public security minister's decision to order the "pure and simple closure of the newspaper." -Two Egyptian citizens were sentenced to a six-month custodial sentence in Sudan on 16 December 2007 for insulting the Islamic religion. The charges are rooted in the book, The Prophet's Wife Eats Her Children Up, (referring to Al-Sayeda Aisha, the prophet Mohammed’s wife) which was distributed by the journalists, Abdel Fattah El-Sadany and Mahrous Mohammed Abdel-Azim, during an international book fair. The trial and sentencing were executed quickly with the absence of defendant lawyer. -The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) reports that the Zimbabwean government’s proposed amendments to the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA), the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) and the Broadcasting Services Act (BSA) on 14 December 2007 will not augment the right to freedom of expression or of a free media. Despite reconstituting the Media Commission of the country, journalists still need to be fully accredited by the state and must also have a clear criminal history and the right to information held by public officials remains absent in the country. -The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is calling for the immediate release of French journalist, Gwenlaoen Le Gouil, who was kidnapped on 15 December 2007 by two unknown men in Puntland, northern Somalia. It is reported that they are demanding a ransom of US$ 70,000. In the backdrop of a particularly dangerous year in the country, Gabriel Baglo, Director of IFJ Africa office said “this abduction underscores the threats facing journalists in Somalia, which have reached an intolerable level.” - On 13 December 2007, the Ministry of Justice of Liberia briefly closed down Stone FM, a local Harbel community radio station for two days. All reporters, including a child broadcaster who was on-air at the time, were ordered to leave the premises after a squad of officers of the Liberian National Police engulfed it. The station was charged with broadcasting “hit messages” against the government and authorities of the Firestone Rubber Plantation in an alleged effort to spread employee involvement in a recent Firestone strike. Broadcasting resumed following the intervention of freedom of expression advocates. -Tunisian journalist Slim Boukdhir is responding to the poor conditions he is being held in following a recently issued one-year jail sentence with a hunger strike. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said, "The speed of the trial and the journalist's prison conditions are all evidence of hounding by the regime to silence its opponents. We call on the international press to campaign for Slim Boukhdir.” - The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services (MIBS) has banned Radio Lyambai in Mongu, Zambia, from broadcasting call-in programmes and thus, as Henry Kabwe, chairperson of the Media Institute of Southern Africa said, preventing "listeners from expressing their views on critical social, economic and developmental issues in Western Province. It is, therefore, an unforgivable attack on the Zambian Constitution's guarantee of freedom of expression.” The closure dates to 30 November 2007, when Juliana Mwila, the ministry's director of press and planning, ordered for the programmes to stop while the station was under investigation for allegedly having failed to handle calls professionally, "becoming a platform for confrontation, controversies and a channel of insults and misinformation," as Mwila phrased. - Resonating with the increased international focus on rescinding insult and defamation laws, six lawsuits for insult and defamation were brought against journalist Wael El Ibrashi, chief editor of Sawt El-Omma, an independent newspaper in Egypt on 10 December 2007 by businessmen and managers of several companies. Hearings will take place on 28 January 2008 and 11 February 2008. - On 11 December 2007, managing editor and founder, Ibrahim Souley and Soumana Idrissa Maiga, of the bi-monthly L'Enquêteur in Niger were released on bail following 72 hours of detention after a libel complaint was filed against them by the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning. A Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) correspondent said L'Enquêteur published a series of articles in its 19 November issue that referred to mismanagement occurring at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. In reaction, the Finance Minister filed a complaint against the newspaper. |

What is it about Festac 77 that remains in the Nigerian memory? Or, what is the legacy of Festac that the Nigerian nation has internalized and made its own? Limited as this view of Festac is, it is still a subject of great significance for the nation, and indeed, of universal interest. Because of its complexity, we plan to trim the subject down even further, Prior to the staging of Festac, there was a lively press discourse on the huge sums of money estimated to be spent on structures and facilities. It was the view of many, that Festac would exhibit, in the main, half nude dancers, a show devoid of meaning in an age of science and technology. Once the performances took off, there was, definitely, no such complaint of the selection of events presented at the fringe Festac at Unilag. We should remember also, that some effort was made to take Festac out of Lagos to the rest of Nigeria. The Durbar event at Kano in Northern Nigeria was, of course, one of the central attractions of Festac. But even the small minority cultural communities were encouraged to organize fringe Festac activities through the state councils of arts and culture. Please share your memories of Festac, send in pictures if available. |
