This section explains how you can apply to come to the United Kingdom to take part in voluntary work. There is no provision under the immigration rules for voluntary workers to come to the United Kingdom. The information in this section is a concession outside the rules that has been made to support charity work and youth mobility. As a voluntary worker there are strict rules on the type of work you can come to the United Kingdom to do and the length of time you can spend in the United Kingdom. The voluntary worker category is a short-term immigration category. You will only be given permission to stay in the United Kingdom as a voluntary worker for a maximum of 12 months. At the end of this period you will need to return home. There is no limit to the number of times you can come to the United Kingdom as a voluntary worker, however you must not stay longer than 12 months on any visit and you must not plan to live permanently in the United Kingdom. If you are currently in the United Kingdom under a different immigration category you will be able to extend your stay to undertake voluntary work if you meet all the eligibility requirements for the voluntary worker category Eligibility A passenger seeking leave to enter to undertake voluntary work must be able to show that: ♦ the activity is purely voluntary and does not involve taking up a salaried post or permanent position of any kind within the charitable organisation or entering into any arrangement that is likely to constitute a contract of employment (see Note on National Minimum Wage Legislation, point (ii) below); and ♦ the activity is either for a charitable organisation listed in ANNEX B or a registered charity or recognised body (see below) whose work meets the criteria set out in this instruction; and ♦ the activity is unpaid, or is not likely to be subject to payment of the National Minimum Wage [see note below on National Minimum Wage exemptions for voluntary workers and residential members of religious and other communities, which are registered charities, whose work involves providing care] and directed towards a worthy cause; and ♦ it is closely related to the aims of the organisation; and ♦ it is fieldwork involving direct assistance to those the charitable organisation has been established to help; and ♦ that there are satisfactory arrangements for the passenger’s maintenance and accommodation in the United Kingdom; and ♦ that the passenger intends to leave the United Kingdom at the end of their stay. NB Those who enter in the category may not during their stay have recourse to public funds, or engage in any work other than the voluntary activity for which they have been admitted. You want to volunteer to work in the UK, read my next post. |
There is nothing unusual about presidents dying in office. William Harrison was the first US president to die in office. The last was John Kennedy. In all, there have been eight sitting Presidents who died by way of illness, natural causes or assassination. Franklin D. Roosevelt for instance died of cerebral hemorrhage. In Nigeria , four chiefs of state have died in office: Johnson Aguyi-Ironsi was murdered in 1966; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was killed in 1966; Murtala Mohammed was assassinated in 1976; while Sani Abacha died under mysterious circumstances, in 1998. Whether they were deposed, resigned, or assassinated, the rumor mills have always been rife with conjectures about the health and sanity of Nigerian leaders. Yar’Adua is not an exception: there are lingering questions about his mental and physical state. Ever since he came to national prominence, there have always been speculations about his health. In recent days, there has been news account of his being flown to Germany for medical treatment. No one knows for sure what the matter is, leading some to speculate he has incurable cancer of the lung, disease of the liver (cirrhosis) or kidney problems. In the early days of his tenure, it was derisively said he was flown overseas to be treated for the common catarrh. Outside of the walls of the presidency and his doctors’ office, no one is sure of what ills the President; what’s for sure is that the President has had periodic health challenges. But what if he dies or become incapacitated by his health problems? Following the order of succession -- and in order not to create leadership vacuum -- the Vice President takes over from the President in the event of death, incapacitation or any other reasons prescribed by law. Simply put: Vice President Jonathan Ebele Goodluck is mandated by the Constitution to take over the President’s responsibilities in case of foreseen or unforeseen situations. The 1999 Nigerian Constitution is very clear on such matters. Chapter V1 for instance states that: Whenever the President transmits to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives a written declaration that he is proceeding on vacation or that he is otherwise unable to discharge the functions of his office, until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary such functions shall be discharged by the Vice-President as Acting President (145) The Vice-President shall hold the office of President if the office of President becomes vacant by reason of death or resignation, impeachment, permanent incapacity or the removal of the President from office for any other reason in accordance with section 143 of this Constitution (146). |
New details about President Umaru Yar’adua’s health have emerged, pointing to a carefully-managed power struggle in the Presidency at Abuja Reports gather that after suffering swellings all over his body over the weekend of Saturday April 12 2008, Yar’Adua was flown out to Germany yesterday night after he barely managed to perform a widely publicized budget signing ceremony from his private residence in the presence of Goodluck Jonathan and a few officials. Only the State House camera crew were allowed to cover the event. But prior to his departure from Nigeria, according to Aso Rock sources, the president handed over to the National Security Adviser, Major General Sarki Mukhtar (Rtd), the all time powerful Chief of Staff, General Abdullahi Mohammed (rtd) and the Secretary to the Federal Government, Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe, thus bypassing the official number two man, Goodluck Jonathan. Mr. Jonathan is nothing more than a “social prefect” in Aso Rock, his main duties having been mostly tailored to appearing at social functions to represent his principal. Also there have been speculations that the core Muslim Northern power bloc is not well-disposed to Jonathan taking over as president, in case Yar’adua becomes incapacitated and unable to carry out official duties. A document in limited circulation, sighted by Saharareporters, is explicit about the possible course of action should Yar’adua die of his current ailment: Mr. Jonathan is expected to resign as Vice-President or he will be forced to do so. Though Presidency sources downplayed the latest health crisis as some “allergic reaction”, knowledgeable medical sources claim that Yar’adua’s current condition can only be managed for some time, but cannot be cured. It is gathered that his German doctors have communicated this to him since last year. There is no information about Yar'adua's whereabouts in Germany, but a source said that he is likely to be with attending physicians at the Department of Nephrology, Deutsche Klinik für Diagnostik, Wiesbaden, Germany. He arrived Germany today -Tuesday, April 15 2008 and checked into the hospital in Wiesbaden at 12 noon. He is expected to return to Nigeria by the weekend. What happens if the unexpected happens? |

Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida is one of the most controversial figures in Nigeria’s history. Despite having been out of power for fast approaching 15 years he still elicits as many column inches and honourable mentions as he did when he was Head of State. Babangida is a complex multi-dimensional character. His antecedents as a political leader are well known. The purpose of this article is to shed light on his early life and on the days before he became a household name in Nigeria. Babangida was born to Gwari parents on August 17, 1941 in Minna, Niger State. His parents were Muhammad Badamasi and Inna Aishatu Babangida. He was the eldest of six children and was not born into an affluent environment. Of those six children, four died as infants and his sister Hannatu is his only surviving sibling. His father Muhammad was born in Wushishi in Niger State and later migrated to Minna. In 1950 he began his primary school education at the Native Authority School in Minna where his classmates included another future Nigerian army General and Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar. The two men’s relationship went further. When Babangida's father died in Kontagora in 1955 and his mother also died shortly afterward, Babangida and his sister were sent to live with relatives. They lived in the same household as Abdulsalam Abubakar. While still at primary school, Babangida had his first brush with the military world when army recruiters came to his school as part of a recruitment drive to encourage northern youths to join the army. They encouraged Babangida and his classmates to join the Nigerian Military School (then known as the Boys Company) but his family decided that Babangida was too young to enrol. He would get another chance later. After leaving the Native Authority School in 1956, Babangida gained admission to the Government College, Bida, in 1957. Once again army recruiters turned up to speak the students on the merits of a military career. This time he took the bait. Babangida and 15 of his school colleagues (including Mamman Jiya Vatsa) sat the entrance exam for admission into the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) in Kaduna, and 11 passed. Babangida’s school graduating class from 1962 reads like a “who’s who” of prominent Nigerian army officers. Professor Jerry Gana was a subsequent alumnus of the school. Babangida and Vatsa enrolled at the NMTC on the same day (December 10, 1962), with Babangida passing out on April 20, 1963. Babangida found his niche in the army. While at the NMTC both Vatsa and Babangida met a diminutive, quiet young Kanuri man from Kano whose life would continually mesh with theirs for decades. The man they met was called Sani Abacha. Babangida received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian army in 1963 at the age of 22. Together with his classmates from the Government College, Bida and his coursemates at the NMTC, Babangida formed a formed a formidable cabal of coup plotting officers that would dominate Nigeria’s political and military evolution for the next four decades. Starting with his classmates from Bida, this cabal was enlarged to include other like minded officers such as Muhammadu Buhari, Sani Abacha and Paul Tarfa. After attending the NMTC he proceeded to the Indian Military Academy from where he graduated in April 1964. His ever present friend Vatsa also attended the Indian Military Academy with him. Upon his return to Nigeria he was posted to the 1st reconnaissance squadron in Kaduna. His commanding officer was the blue blooded son of the Emir of Katsina, Major Hassan Katsina. This squadron and the 2nd reconnaissance squadron in Abeokuta would later evolve into the Nigerian army’s armoured corps, in which Babangida was to be a pivotal figure, and which played crucial roles in future military coups. Babangida served as a member of the Nigerian army units sent to quell the disturbances taking place in the Tiv region. While serving under Katsina, a pivotal event occurred in Kaduna which changed Babangida’s life forever. On January 15th 1966 a group of young army Majors overthrew the civilian government of Tafawa Balewa. Elsewhere in Kaduna a young and charismatic instructor at the NMTC who was acquainted with Babangida murdered the Premier of the Northern Region Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello. Babangida’s next course was at the Royal Armoured Centre in the United Kingdom for the young officers’ course, which he completed on April 24, 1966. When he returned to Nigeria, he was promoted to Lieutenant. Several of his colleagues and contemporaries such as T.Y Danjuma, Muhammadu Buhari and Shehu Musa Yar’Adua were also promoted by the military government of Major-General Aguiyi-Ironsi. However the political temperature was close to boiling point. The atmosphere in the barracks was volcanic as the army factionalised along regional lines with northern and Igbo officers accusing each other of plotting the annihilation of the other. Although at the time he was convinced that the January coup was a sectionally motivated coup by Igbos against the north, in a subsequent interview, Babangida later admitted that the Majors’ coup: "was not an Igbo based thing as far as I could imagine but the execution of the coup was poorly done and made people to think that it was one sided. I could recall Nzeogwu saying that some chaps in the south let him down because they had not been able to carry out the instruction the way he wanted them."[1] On July 28, 1966 northern officers mutinied at the Abeokuta garrison. Within days the mutinies spread nationwide and northern soldiers murdered their Igbo colleagues in reprisals for the murder of northern leaders and soldiers during the January Majors’ coup. Babangida was among the mutineers. Further details regarding this coup will follow in a forthcoming book by this author, but it suffices to say that Babangida’s new commanding officer Major Ukpo Isong was murdered during the mutiny by men from his own unit. |
Nigeria’s foreign policy needs to be redefined. Such definition must take into consideration Nigeria’s goals, cultural imperatives, and convolute our nation’s foreign policy with those of our allies without disadvantaging Nigeria for the benefit of other nations. Our foreign policy must be defined in terms of the goals our nation need to officially seek to attain abroad, the culture and values that bring about those objectives and the instruments necessary to pursue the goals while taking into account other nation’s prevailing foreign policies that may be established against our national interest. The essential tripods of our foreign policy strategy must be linked together such that they add value to our nation. Unfortunately for Nigeria, our foreign policy is static, unprogressive and is not benevolent to most Nigerians. In terms of helping citizens abroad, for example, an American can bet his life on getting help if he runs into any American embassy to seek solutions to a problematic situation. America embassy will willingly render help to her citizen first and deal with the situation later. On the other hand, a Nigerian citizen visiting his embassy for help will likely be given every reason possible not to render help in a foreign land. A Nigerian seeking help in a foreign land will most likely be left hanging. Perhaps, it is not surprising why a citizen of one nation is patriotic while a citizen of another work against the interest of his nation; why a citizen of one nation exhibits political fervor while citizen of another nation shows political apathy; and why a citizen of one nation is very passionate about his country while the citizen of the other looks for every available moment to make caustic statement about his country. Nigeria’s foreign policy is always in question whenever Nigerians are treated in an inhuman manner either within Nigeria or outside of Nigeria by foreign nations or companies. How did Nigeria react to British Airways removal of 136 Nigerians from its flight for what ever reason? How would Britain, America and Russia have reacted in such a situation? Another issue germane to foreign policy is the role of SSS. In Nigeria, while the SSS ought to be the eyes and ears of government as an important component of our foreign policy, instead, some members of this distinguished body are found in beer parlors discussing, in almost graphic terms, their current operations while foreign agents are taking notes. I guess beer parlors are the best place our nation’s enemies can understudy our societal secrets and foreign policy moves. Nigeria’s foreign policies have historically exhibited stagnancy, political favoritism, sometimes involve political cronyism, clueless diplomats who have no idea of their functional responsibilities which is to represent Nigeria well in times of joyous ceremonies, defending the nation in hostile environment from a hosting nation, protesting citizens’ human right abuses in the countries where such human right abuses take place, chastising nations that flout citizen’s human rights and feverishly defending Nigeria’s national interests. President Yar ‘Adua must review our foreign policy stands, re-define our nation’s international interests in terms of particular geographic areas of interest, provide a solid foundation for citizen to defend Nigeria’s national interest even if shedding of blood is necessary, re-constitute our nation’s diplomatic core with professionals not cronies, redefine our foreign policies in terms of foreign trade, internationalism and regionalism. By re-defining our national interest, the country will awake in her citizens, patriotism which has been dead for quite some time. Foreign policy is commonsensical and has within it strategic diverse policy objectives. Even an ordinary engineer such as myself can understand it from a pragmatic, patriotic and benevolent point of view. Foreign Service is a call to duty on behalf of Nigeria. It is either that President Yar ‘Adua will re-engineer our nation’s foreign policy and our Foreign Service team or Nigeria must vigorously demand a re-engineering and a real overhaul of our foreign policy strategies from him or the next globally informed patriotic president, that is if we can find one. So far, our foreign policy strategies are not persuasive even to ordinary Nigeria. Nigeria needs serious help in this area. |

The level of poverty, lack of social amenities, unemployment, curruption are problems characterised with most developing nations. We are a nation bedevilled with so many ills, but one thing remains unchangeable Nigeria is a country blessed with so many multiplicities, diversities and interests. We are still a nation surviving after so many problems, am sure some day we shall rise above our impediments. The average Nigerian needs to change his/her mentality about what Niheria will do or has not done, in your own little way do something for your home, family, friends, comunity, village, office, comapny and society. Nigeria will benefit if every Nigerian is responsible to his duties. The policeman, the journalist, NEPA official, LASTMA, KAI,Judges, everybody has a role to play in the new Nigeria dream. What role are you willing to play? |

Silverbird Television STV, current affairs programme Head to Head anchored by Ogechukwu Emezue is a cutting edge political interactive discussion programme that is sometimes interesting. But what i find out disheartening about the programmeis the style, qulaity of questions and presentation of the presenter to his invited guest. The other day, he was interviewing the governor of Ekiti state, he took so much time asking irrelevant questions but only asked the governor a 15 seconds questions about developments in Ekiti state. What do you think of the programme ? |

The basis for saying there is nothing good about Nigeria is the fact that the basic amenities of life are not available, poverty, unemployment, curruption, injustice, electoral malpractices, Nepa failure ans so many others. But the truth is Nigerians are by virtue of all these ills amongst the most intelligent and knowledgeable persons on the face of the earth. Everybody must not work in a bank, mega corporations , government to be succesful, you can carve a niche for yourself , that is why appreciate Nigeria musical talents and soccer ambassadors. There is one thing good about Nigerians We never give up. The instinct to survive am sure is natural but i can confidently say there are only few nationals of variopus countries that have the capacity of the average Nigerian. Your research Mr Vicjustice should proffer solutions, don't give people the opportunity to say rubbish about Nigeria here. I love Naija |
This Marriage Thing Sef Marriage today is not what it used to be. Let me rephrase that: marriage is not what I thought it was. It is not what I think it should be. And no, I am not yet married. Marriage is supposed to be a bond between a man and a woman, held by love. When you are getting married, you are supposed to be getting married to your best friend, your soul mate, your other half. For men, you are supposed to be getting married to the woman who has your rib in her, the woman who has your missing rib. And for women, you are supposed to be getting married to the man whose rib you have in you. When ‘marriage’ comes to mind, people often think of love, romance, happiness, eternal bliss, love, love, love. A man gets married to what he considers a beautiful woman. He expects that she will undergo physical changes, especially after having his children. Her stomach might get a little rounder; her thighs might get a little chunkier; her feet might get bigger. Hmm, it will only be a matter of time before gravity descends on her breasts. So he expects all of this, but he does not foresee one of her butt cheeks to equal the size of their jumbo pillow. He does not foresee her stomach to be bigger than his beer gut. And while, he expected her feet to grow a little bigger, he did not ever think they would grow big enough to fit his shoes. And her breasts? Let’s just say it can go for miles. The thing seems to be longer every time he sees it. They used to have a great sex life, but now she is too busy catering for the children to satisfy his needs. By the time she comes to bed, she smells of maggi cubes and curry. Her hair consistently remains undone. He is not quite sure if she is taking out the weave on her head or fixing a new one. The whole thing is a mess. Her nails are as sharp as a razor blade. He has the evidence to prove this on their bed sheets which are constantly sliced by her toe nails. And when was the last time she shaved? She has taken the word, ‘natural’ to a whole new level. Whoever told her he wants to be in bed with a grizzly bear? Before they got married, he promised to stop drinking and smoking. He is yet to quit either. He smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish. One day, he will drink himself to stupor and smoke himself to ashes. He comes to bed smelling like an ash tray dumped in a cheap bar and expects her to wear lingerie to bed? He has to be high on something. These days, she has no interest in sex anymore. Well, she still has interest, but she refuses to subject herself to such degradation. She would rather utilize Mr. Denzel, her three-hundred dollar vibrator. He is worth every penny she spent on him. Too bad he is not tax deductable. He probably thinks of someone else while he is inside her anyway. He probably closes his eyes while he is on top of her. He probably cannot wait to burst a nut, so he can get out of her. He probably only does it because he needs to – not because he wants to. Why will she want to have sex with such a man? She believes he is very selfish. Why else will he expect her to work several hours a day, come home and take care of the kids, help them to do their assignment, prepare dinner, and then be in the mood to satisfy his needs in bed? When she is in the mood, she is too tired; when she is not tired, she is not in the mood. And when she is in the mood and not tired, she would rather be with Mr. Denzel. At least, she is guaranteed to have his time for more than five minutes – unlike some other people she knows. She does not know why he keeps complaining about the money she sends home to her mother. Has she ever stopped him from sending money to his own mother? Does he know what her mother went through when her father left them for another woman? There is nothing he will say that will make her stop sending money to her mother. She works hard for her money, and she has every right to spend it how she wants to. Besides, she has always dreamt of the day she will finally be able to show her mother some appreciation for all she went through when her father left them high and dry. And now this man thinks she will stop spoiling her mother because some husband said she should? Please. I may not be married, but having observed a lot of marriages and found in them nothing that thrills or excites me, I have realized that one problem with marriages is habit. Marriage becomes a game of habit. Who says you cannot attend a friend’s night party because you are now married? Who says you cannot spend an entire day at Six Flags and scream your hearts out on every ride? What stops you from going to a poetry parlor? Oh, that’s right. You are married now. You can only go to work, come home, eat egwusi soup, watch TV, do whatever you do in bed, and sleep. Then you wake up in the morning and repeat the cycle. There has got to be a better way to be married because this current marriage thing sef…e get as e be oh!! |

Irrespective of what people say Nigeria remains a goldmine, people are making it big time here. The other day i saw my first bank share certificate, japaul and dangote, the margins are too good to be true. It is easier to be succesful and wealthy legitimately in Nigeria than anywhere in the world. go ask Dangote. Agreed curruption is a bane but it is must common to all men and society. Developments are ongoing in virtually the 36 states, the roads today in Lagos are better , check Adeola ODEKU RD, Ajose ADEOGUN in V/I. Cross Rivers state is now a tourism haven, the tinapa project, obudu ranch are develoments. Perhaps individaully we have failed ourselves, if every Nigerian can devlop and grow at its maximum capacity the society as a whole will be better. It should be on all stages. The one thing that we have to consistently keep doing is to, as much as possible, build our own capa-bilities. We have businessmen who can compete in the global market. We have schools that can produce the kind of skills that the global economy requires. We must stay focused on these areas of our national lives. I believe that it's the way forward for us. We are not going to tell the world, 'stop and let us catch up' |

My own view on this is that our entertainment industry at this point does not need all of this unneccessary hype,if an artist is good,it will always show in his results and in his works,so there is no need for industry god fathers. Or wot do y'all think? |
All too soon we have arrived at yet another conference organised by the section on business law aimed at raising the standard of business law practice in Nigeria. The theme for this year's conference is law and development in a globalised economy. I have said it repeatedly that our aspirations as a country will only be fulfilled when we plug into the global economy. And one major instrument to achieve this is the law. A cursory look at the subjects slated for discussion will reveal that the commanding heights of businesses in Africa are infrastructural development and legal and regulatory issues, because these are the vehicles that translate otherwise mundane concepts into reality. We can ask ourselves a few rhetorical questions, what if Nigeria had uninterrupted power supply, what if we had excellent highways, railways, transport systems, what if what if what if. The principle here is that development is driven by man and it is the ability of man to move in the easiest and quickest fashion from one location to another that impacts directly on the level of development any nation can achieve. Nigeria can be a business hub not only for this continent but for itself because if we had highways and railways linking one part of this country efficiently with another, it means business people at all levels can move their wares, themselves and create this extensive network and bee hive of activities that can guarantee growth. Yet in this busy atmosphere we dream of there must be order and that is where the law comes in. It is this link between law and development that this conference tries to establish. It is therefore not difficult to see why interest in this conference has gone well beyond these shores. Nigeria occupies a unique place in Africa and we must never shy away from the role to lead the continent. When the SBL held the first conference in 2006, we knew immediately given the level of interest and attendance that there was hunger for knowledge in this country. Last year, we widened the horizon to include Africa and the hunger even became more severe and so this year, we have decided that we might as well go global. It is our firm intention to establish this conference as the best and most prestigious business law conference on this continent. At the time of writing this piece we have received nearly a hundred and fifty registrations from abroad and this of itself is a clear testimony of the high esteem in which we are held. We cannot therefore afford to devalue ourselves. As I did on previous occasions, I encourage all Nigerian lawyers to attend and especially make a plea for senior lawyers especially from the well established law firms to sponsor juniors so that we can all begin to taste of this international standard that we so frequently talk about. Abuja 2008 will be a bee hive of intellectual feast, social interaction and business networking. As with the IBA there are a number of social activities that are lined up and many of these will showcase our rich cultural heritage. The famous play KURUNMI Play by Ola Rotimi will be one of the highlights of the social events. The chairman's dinner on the closing day will feature Afe, Atanda dance movement and band and Sammy Needle. What this tells you is that we all are in for a swell time. One last thing, don't forget to bring out the best your wardrobe has to offer because it is also an opportunity to show off to the world. And another final thing, remember to be good hosts to our foreign visitors, because this conference should also showcase our traditional African hospitality. |

The united states have 52 mega states, while uk lack s behind in terms of size. I love the US for so many reasons, free society, land of opprtunities, entertainment. UK is ok but strict. If we compare Nigerians who live in both countries, people who live in he us are free and open, while uk people are secretive and conservative. have not visited any of the 2 places. |
