Nigeria's official delegation sent to Mexico to cheer to victory Nigeria's world boxing council heavyweight champion Samuel Peter was reportedly to have been deported to London without their luggage. The delegation comprised, Mr. Ogbonya onovo, a Deputy inspector General of Police, MR. olusegun Efuntayo, an Assistant Inspector General of Police, as well as all the members of the Akwa Ibom state Government. Differerent reasons were adduced for the deportation, First, is the large contingent of delegates; twenty four people which the Mexicans considered larger than what was originally approved by the organizers of the fight. Another reason was that the Nigerian delegation unilaterilly decided to transit through spain to Mexico without visas. Thirdly, most of the deportees allegedly also did not have hotel reservations in MEXICO CITY. Are the Mexican immigartion justified for there action? Is it right to deport a Person without allowing to carry luggae? What is the relationship between Nigeria and Mexico as regards visa ? What do you think the Nigerian foreign affairs ministry should do now? |

Such is the mans confidence. Such is the Bulls tenacity. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bull I present today is none other than the Nigerian ace Daniel Amokachi . Born on December the 20th 1972 "Amotaxi" as he is also known was unveiled to Africa and the rest of the world during the Eagles 2-0 victory in 1990 against the Elephants of Ivory Coast. 60 days later he became the youngest player at that time to participate in the 1990 African Nations Cup where he stunned both friend and foe with his aggressive yet spectacular play. (1) When I remember Amokachis overall style then today, I best compare it to a woman's skirt that is long enough to be respectable but short enough to be interesting, make that very interesting. Unlike other Eagle dribblers whose work product could be called um, masturbatory for lack of a better word Amokachi's could never be called the same since self gratification mostly resulted in spectacular goals. Records may come and they may go, some are all huff and no puff while some deserve a raised eye lid. Well raise 2 and chew on this because Nigeria has only lost 1 non friendly Team A game in which Danny boy started and played a full 90 minutes ! The Bull first started off in Nigeria's Pepsi league where he roamed the wings for the Kaduna Ranchers Bees at an amazing 16 , annoying both defenders and goal keepers with his persistent aggressive style of play and love affair with the back of the net Our Bull had so much grace he could have easily have danced through many a China shop and not break one thing! On April the 27th against the Benin Republic during the ANC qualification game he would score his first of a dozen brilliant goals for Nigeria when he tagged their "onion basket" in the 27th minute. Other notable monsters would be the 17th minute bulala against Uganda in Surulere in 1992, the 87th minute "full stop" against Algeria in the 4-1 rout also in Lagos a year later and the breath taking "bang bang double trouble" versus Burkina Faso in 96 where he made the Stallion Goal Keeper retrieve the ball from his net twice in 2 minutes But then we are getting ahead of ourselves here aren't we ? I say this because the winged Pegasus out of Africa for the young Tiv boy named Daniel, came calling in form of the scouts for the Belgian Club Bruges and not from the tea sipping FA. Here again Amokachi played handsomely and one could seriously question what drained him more - the bitter weather with the stoic Flemish hospitality or what the defence threw against him every Sunday. Hoping that you al chose option number 1 you can now understand how he felt when those same tea drinking scouts I mentioned above did come calling ! When they came they came from Everton, drank Guinness instead of Earl Grey, and liked what they saw very much. When they presented the Nigerian not just with their clubs resume but also with a list of Nigerian restaurant menus-all within spitting distance of the grounds-Amo was Britannia bound. Here he slid into the ease of his new role designed by Coach Joe Royle like the smooth uninterrupted singular motion of a meguards arrow leaving its quiver and soaring to meet its bulls eye ! Soon budding friendships with people like King George Weah as well as his play on the field would make both fan and scout sit up straight and pay attention when the Bulls name was mentioned, be it for real or just for charity. He was certainly among Africa's best ! At the 1994 WC in addition to Yekinis net entanglement and Baggios " I blew it" stances Amo's hands and knees crawl to the corner flag celebration against Bulgaria in the Cotton Bowl remains among the dominant hightlights of the competition. (2) Anyway Everton was just what the Doctor prescribed and provided the spring board that Amokachi needed ! Playing along other hungry top notch forwards the team first sputtered then roared into full gear and by 1995 was a double edged sword that based her attack on sheer spunk and borderline reckless bravado. Amokachis "double trouble 2" in the FA semi final when he would bomb the The Hotspurs into submission with 2 unanswered monster goals still makes Everton fans cross themselves when they talk about the Bull. Who can forget his cheekiest almost childish of all grins while ferrying the FA cup around Wembley on his head as if he was fetching water from a stream with a size 7 bucket back home ? I for one cant ! Anyway I could drone on for as long as the weeks has days about Amo and we would still arrive at the humble fact that while there are many who play in the FA out of Africa there are but a handfull Africans who have held argubaly the most precious of the UK's trophies in their bare hands - Go and c Unchecked Fury, AMOTAXI's game for lack of a better term was just plain "sexy" In the 2 monster games against their main rival Ferbenache armed with Uche and Okocha Amokachi single handedly maimed the other "giant" by scoring what till today they call the soap" goal" in Turkey. It was that slippery and would have been enough for the fans but considering Amo had just banged in what they dubbed "the leg of Allah goal" just moments later, they lay dazed and confused ! Oh BTW he just happened to be lying upside down, AIRBORNE ! His regal staus remained throughout 1998 by which he was the Super Eagles top scorer during the same year WC qualifications. Despite medical advice from Istanbul he played through still soft scar tissue from an injury suffered in Turkey, starting a rift between himself and the club. To make matters worse his Eagles crashed out and things got worse when Amo hurt his knee so badly that the initial dignosis put not just to end his career on the field, but on the walkway where he modeled part time as well It would be impossible to try and track the various headlines we have all read linking Amo to some far out remedy or treatment for his knee. It would be even harder to try and weed out those with merit and those with out. However all we know is that he tried everything and never gave up hope. While the finger waggers and so called experts all begged him to retire he refused and continued to play for those who would still give him a chance! However the knee problems persisted and sooner than later Amo would do the right thing and focus on rehabilitation 100% . In 2001 he shocked the world when days before the critical game between Nigeria and Sudan he suddenly appeard at the Eagles camp claiming to be ready to roar. While thousands of fans saw it different he was still unable to crack Amodus line up and was soon all over Europe and the UAE shopping his services. It would not be Europe but the US that would finally ensnare the Ex Nigerian captain when the Colorado Rapids would annouce his signing and where Amotaxi cracked the THE 1st ELEVEN after one practice. Amazing ? Not if you remember part 2 of the Indian chant: Da Bull a coming better not looking down Da Bull a stomping, steppin out of the clouds Da Bull A killa, Put em in da ground Listen America Da Bull a coming listen for the sound !

Members of the honorable forum i have an appeal forwarded to me by a visitor to the forum. He seeks my advise, and i have therefore deemed it fit to bring to the forum for a wholistic debated abd advise. Thanking you while i await your advise. Below are the decision of the ECO, You have a your payslips from your employer as evidence of your claimed income. These payslips cover a period of six months. All the figures on these are identical and appear to have been produced at the same time. This leads me to doubt the authenticity of them as not as not every month has the same number of working days. You have not provided any othereveidence to substantiate your earnings and i am not satisfied that you have satisfactorily confirmed that your income is as claimed. Therefore on the balance of probabilities i am not satisfied you will be maintained and accomodated in the UK without or having recourse to public funds or are able to meet the cost of return or an onward journey as required by paragraph, 41[VI] and[Vii] of HC395 You state that you earn N155,367[621 Pounds] a month. You state you earn other income from a building block industry but no evidence of this has been submitted. Your bank statement shows a total of N3,869,879 [15,479]was credited to the account in 6 months from August 2007 to February 2008. This represents over two years salary to you. You have not provided eveidence of the origin of these funds. This indicates that the account has been artificially inmlated so i am not satisfied that it represents a true reflectionb of your financial circumstances. This also leads me to doubt these funds are available for your trip. Therefore i am noty satisfied that you will be maintained and accomodated in the UK without working or recourse to public funds or are able to meet the cost of return or amn onward journeyas required by paragraph, 41[VI] and[Vii] of HC395 |

A Chelsea win will be a sweet one. Arsenal always thrive when the odds are against them but for chelsea that has not lost a premiership game at stamford bridge for close to four years then one would give it to the blues to carry the day. |
Thank God Alao Akala is returned as Governor, otherwise hell would have been let loosed if a re-election or his office treminated. Am sure ibadan residents would prefer a verdict like this if not for anything but peace. |
Former South African President Nelson Mandela has met a group of men and women with whom he was on trial during the struggle against apartheid. Mr Mandela was an accused on three occasions during that period, including the famous Rivonia Trial, when he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Twenty surviving defendants met the ex-President in Johannesburg. The historic reunion was part of the celebrations for Mr Mandela's 90th birthday later this year. It has long been Mr Mandela's wish to be reunited with the survivors of the trials that were landmark events in the 1950s and 60s. Now they have been able to share their memories about the early efforts to end white domination in South Africa. 'Struggle continues' Of the more than 150 men and women who went on trial for treason with Nelson Mandela in 1956, only 25 are still alive. Now in their 70s and 80s, many of these well known activists are increasingly frail. Dennis Goldberg, who was among those in the dock with Mr Mandela at the Rivonia Trial in 1964, paid tribute to his former colleagues. "The people I met are people who selflessly committed themselves to building a free South Africa with justice and democracy, and a better life for all our people. And that struggle continues," he said. The reunion was made possible with the help of Sweden which gave extensive support to the anti-apartheid movement from 1960 onwards. Mr Mandela will turn 90 in July. He appears to be in reasonable health, but now makes far fewer public appearances.

The ailing Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro is a living legend from every indication. So much has been said and written about this strong man that history has recorded him even in his lifetime as one of the greatest political figures ever to betraddle the global leadership stage. Historically Castro led other comrades-in-arms to launch a revolution in Cuba in 1959. The 81-year old Castro has since become a hero at home and abroad for his survivalist inclinations and charismatic fiery anti-imperialist speeches. Comrade Castro in his youthful radical exuberance, five decades ago, toppled the corrupt regime of President Fulgencio Batista in 1959. The Cuban revolution immortalised heroes like late Che Guevera. Comrade Castro for decades defied American-led political machinations and called the bluff of many American Presidents. Their many efforts to either topple him or kill him failed as the bearded Communist immortal marched on. And in April 1961 America through the CIA masterminded an invasion using Cuban dissidents (mostly based in Miami) in the famous "Bay of Pigs" which collapsed disgracefully as Castro’s revolutionary Army humiliated the invaders, killing many and taking about 1,000 prisoners. Attempts to lace Castro's beloved cigars with deadly explosives did not work neither did the plot to cause him some embarrassment by causing his beloved beard to fall off yield anything. Almost ten American Presidents, a whole generation, has come and gone with Castro defying every of their sinister plots to dismantle his entrenched communist regime. Some of these Presidents of the free world had died in natural circumstances but Castro has survived the odds though age and revolution-related weariness are having their toll on him right now. Under Castro Cuba has had mixed fortunes. At least in the areas of health and education Castro has succeeded in bequating to the Latin American nation a nation of above-average literacy rating and sound health sector. The Cuban academic infrastructures are in good hands and they produce quality materials while their health sector (manpower and facilities) are reputed among the best in the world. Castro's fifty-year reign did encounter economic recession in the early 90's leading up to many fleeing the island for America and elsewhere. Even Castro's own daughter joined the bandwagon of self-exile! As the economic fortunes of the citizenry nose-dived with hunger and starvation gripping many Castro's regime appeared to be at the end of its tethers but it managed to survive. The two national parallel currency policy went a long way to pauperize the masses creating a room for the rich and poor to be further polarised. Trained as a lawyer Fidel Castro launched the revolution to free poor Cubans from the Batista dictatorial stranglehold; he risked all to be in control in order to help the downtrodden regain their dignity and have a better life. But things did not quite work out as he had planned with opposition from America distracting him most of the time. Two weeks ago Fidel Castro, indisposed, used the Communist Party's 'Granma' newspaper to convey an important message to his compatriots. According to the great man: "To my dear compatriots, who gave me the immense honor in recent days of electing me a member of parliament , I communicate to you that I will not aspire to or accept -- I repeat not aspire to or accept -- the positions of president of the Council of State and commander-in-chief, This is not my farewell to you. My only wish is to fight as a soldier in the battle of ideas. I shall continue to write under the heading of 'Reflections by comrade Fidel.' It will be just another weapon you can count on. Perhaps my voice will be heard. I shall be careful". Last Sunday, true to his promise of quitting power definitively, his younger brother Raul Castro was "elected" the President by Cuba's National Assembly, a rubber-stamp legislature. The 76-year-old former Defense Minister, Fidel's brother and designated successor Raul Castro has been acting as president since emergency intestinal surgery forced his brother to delegate power on July 31, 2006. Raul Castro has raised hopes of economic reforms but he is not likely to make bold political steps or changes to the one-party state. Fidel Castro will remain influential as first secretary of the ruling Communist Party. Famous worldwide for his long speeches delivered in his green military fatigues, Castro is admired in the Third World for standing up to the United States but considered by his opponents a tyrant who tolerated little dissent and suppressed freedom. At home, supporters point to Cuba's advances in health and education for all its citizens. But critics, led by the United States and the hundreds of thousands of Cubans who left home to live abroad, say he turned the Caribbean island into a police state and that his policies wrecked the economy and brought untold hardship to the masses. The Castro to Castro transition in Cuba has surprised only a few given the fact that Raul was an insider in the revolutionary regime of Fidel. As powerful Defense Minister he provided the security network and blanket with which the Castro regime was covered and immunised from external agression. Besides he was favoured by an elder brother conscious of the past and present. Now as President the young hawks in the government like the Foreign Minister will have to wait for the old generation to be incapacitated by ill-health or natural death before grabbing power. As the "Maximum Leader" retires befittingly from politics this is not only wishing him many more years on earth but long live the socialist revolution in Latin America. Cuba has survived many foreign plots because of Castro and post-Castro the country will definitely survive some more. As the mystic man in Havana said in his quit message to the nation: "Fortunately, our Revolution can still count on cadres from the old guard and others who were very young in the early stages of the process". |

In his statement, Fidel Castro said a recent trip to Argentina and last week's anniversary of the Cuban Revolution had caused him "days and nights of non-stop work" and put him under "extreme stress". Resulting intestinal bleeding, he said, meant he needed an operation which would require several weeks of rest. "Since our country is threatened by the US Government under circumstances such as these," the statement said, Mr Castro had delegated his functions as president and first secretary of the Communist Party to his brother Raul, who is 75. A major celebration had been planned for 13 August - the veteran leader's 80th birthday - but the event has now been postponed until December The end of an era |
