SSL certificates are an essential tool in the arsenal of any webmaster, but we Nigerians grossly overlook them for reasons that are mostly baseless. Browsing the web, about 8 out of 10 foreign-based websites usually have SSL certificates. While we see it as something you get when you are running an eCommerce store and have a very large budget, it is supposed to the treated as something you get if you are going to be requesting any form of information from your users through your website. Having an SSL certificate means that your website is accessed using the HTTPS protocol instead of the base HTTP protocol. I will briefly explain the advantage of this. Generic HTTP is the protocol through which data is transferred between whatever server hosts your website and the web browser your user is using. This means the HTML, CSS, JavaScript and image files that make up your website are transferred from your server to your clients over the internet using this protocol. This also means data, which is collected from your users using forms, for example, are sent to your servers using this protocol. This is where the difference between HTTP and HTTPS becomes significant. The ‘S’ in HTTPS stands for secure. This means that when using HTTPS, an extra layer of security is added to the data being sent to and from your website. This means you can collect sensitive information such as passwords, credit card details, etc. from your users with relative peace of mind as all data is encrypted during transmission. If you still need some background info, you can continue with this paragraph or you can just skip to the next section where I highlight some very specific advantages of SSL and how to overcome the price issue if you don’t have the cash for Comodo SSL. Let’s talk about why you need encryption. HTTP or HTTPS transfers data between two points over the internet. The first point being your web server and the second, your user’s web browser. Unfortunately, like most communication protocols, your data transfer can be intercepted by unscrupulous elements at any number of points during the transmission process. When using HTTP, once your transfer is intercepted, whatever data is being transferred becomes easily accessible to the hacker. This is obviously a big problem if your user is trying to log in with his password or maybe he is trying to purchase something on your site using his debit card. When using HTTPS, on the other hand, your data is protected by a 128-bit to 256-bit encryption during transmission. This means that your data is scrambled while in transmission and can only be unscrambled when it reaches its destination. Modern encryption technologies are rather difficult to subvert and both you and your users can be rest assured that information sent to and from your website cannot be easily tampered with during transmission. Now to highlight some very specific positive impacts that an SSL certificate can have on your web-based business. • Customer’s Trust: Nowadays, it’s a lot easier to spot websites that have SSL certificates due to web browsers providing very obvious visual cues to users. Browsers are now going as far as to alert users that your site is insecure when they try to fill forms on websites without SSL certificates. Even the least tech-savvy user will probably be a bit suspicious if he is trying to login to your website and Mozilla Firefox displays a nasty alert telling him that your website is insecure and that the information he is about to fill can easily fall into the wrong hands. Besides, for tech-savvy people, having an SSL certificate shows that you actually about the safety of their data. Any way you look at it, SSL will certainly boost customer confidence in your business. • Search Results Ranking: All the big names on the web are now calling for SSL across all sites. This campaign includes Google. As a result, SSL now plays an undeniable part in how well your website performs in Google’s search results. The reasoning is that users will very much prefer to have a secure experience as they surf the web. • Social Media Authentication: This is a new trend that is being mostly ignored by Nigerian webmasters. It basically allows your users to log in to your site using their existing social media accounts. This means instead of having to fill a form to sign up to your website, they can simply connect to their Facebook, Twitter or Google+ accounts and save themselves a lot of stress. This is a feature I am usually on the lookout for nowadays and it sometimes makes the difference between me actually creating an account on some website or just closing the page and trying to get whatever I need on a more user-conscious site. I am sure I am not alone, if for no other reason than the fact that I don’t have to remember one more password. • Accepting Payments on your Website: There are several payment gateways available nowadays that can be easily integrated into your site. These gateways allow you to accept debit card payments on your website, instead of putting your users through the stress of paying to some bank account and then texting you the payment details. However, debit card details are definitely considered sensitive information and no respectable payment gateway will allow you to integrate their service into a domain without SSL. This means you can either have your customers sent to another website to make their payments and then redirect them back to your website when they are done, or you can just get an SSL certificate and save everyone from a lot of stress. However, there is still the major huddle of cost to be crossed. Most Nigerian web hosts offer SSL certificates for prices ranging between #25,000 and #40,000 per year. This might seem rather excessive especially if you have a small budget and you are making do with a hosting package of 6,000. This cost issue has been resolved by most foreign hosting services by offering a free SSL package from Let’s Encrypt with their hosting packages. This trend doesn’t seem to be making its way to Nigerian hosting companies for some reason. I was initially skeptical about Let’s Encrypt, it sounds too good to be true when you tell me I can get a service worth #40,000 absolutely for free. But I transferred my websites to a foreign hosting company sometime last year, got SSL set up on them and till date, I have had no course for regrets. The only issue now is the actual hosting cost. A reasonable hosting package from a reliable foreign hosting company costs about $100/year. Considering our exchange rate and the fact that some of us are surviving on 6,000 hosting packages, it will be a tall order to be expected to suddenly churn out $100; no matter how beneficial the results might be. I am happy to inform you that I have figured out a way to resolve this problem. If you have been convinced you have a lot to benefit from SSL but like most of us, you don’t have a large budget to work with, then drop me a word and I will be sure to put you through. I will tell you how to get a hosting package for between 5,000 to 10,000 depending on your needs. Your site will be hosted on one of the most reputable hosting companies in the UK and for 10,000 you get premium hosting with unlimited disk storage, bandwidth, email accounts and MySql databases. All packages, of course, come with free SSL from Let’s Encrypt. You can also run both PHP and Python on the hosting package just in case you have a fascination for Flask or Django. You can contact me at 08153817868 or vb.ayorinde@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you take your online business to the next level. |
Hi, If you have a blog or other website, you probably understand the importance of https. Having a secured connection helps in a couple of ways. ->It increases the trust of your viewers and adds an element of credibility to your site. ->It improves your rankings on Google search ->You can collect sensitive data like debit card information from your users, securely ->Browsers like Mozilla Firefox usually give warning prompts when users try to fill forms on sites without SSL That being said, SSL is traditionally kinda expensive and the Nigerian web hosts I know don't support Let's Encrypt which issues free SSL certificates. ![]() I recently invested in a hosting package that allows me to host an unlimited number of websites which is being underutilized by the three websites I personally manage, and I am planning on adding a couple more websites to the package. So if you need secure, reliable, unlimited disk space, bandwidth, MySQL and email accounts with free SSL certificate, feel free to contact me here or at viktallbay@gmail.com or 08153817868 Note: -> You only pay after you get your cpanel login details ![]() -> This package doesn't come with a domain name, but I can help you configure an existing domain name to point to this hosting package. So, get in touch quickly as I am only planning on adding a couple websites so I don't consume too much server resources. |
Prophets and priests in the old testament were servants of God. Christ came to this world to redeem us back into kingdom, to make us sons. You all might have fun arguing about if you servant or not but I have absolute confidence I am a son. |

Hi guys, I just want to share something i got today with you; Jhn 1:1-9 Jesus came to redeem us into the light. The Light is the 'life' which is in God, and this 'life' is meant to be the Light of men. Jesus is this Light, when a man is redeemed by Jesus he becomes a Son of God and Jesus is also a Son of God(the first). Therefore every Son of God is also a part of the Light and they have to bring the knowlegde of the Light into the darkness which comprehended it not. Every man who is not yet one with the Light (i.e not yet a Son of God, not yet a believer in the name of Jesus) is a part of the darkness. The primary assignment of those in the Light is to expand the Light and reduce the darkness through whatever means. Different Sons of God have different purposes on earth, but it all goes down to one thing; reaching out to those in the darkness and bringing them into the Light. This is very important because the darkness cannot comprehend the Light even when the Light is shining; and the light must aim to conquer the darkness completely. Therefore it is not enough for Sons of God to just be successful in life, it is not enough for the light to radiate through them, they must make conscious efforts to absorp the darkness and convert it to light. Conclusion: Sons of God must always get more Sons into the kingdom with whatever they do in life. You dont neccessarily have to be a pastor but whatever you do must increase the Light and bring more people int the kingdom. Thank you |
