LSE treats certain people as Honored Friends....and a few people here who will have us believe they know what they are talking about insist these schools wouldn't bulge a bit if you showed up on their doorstep with privilege written all over you.

What?....The dude wasn't even interested in studying!...and he got into LSE!!!!!...One of Britain's foremost Universities!...I wonder how many real talents were passed up to secure him his highly earned place!

I'll make 3 points to you-
1. you do not know what you are saying

2. you do not know what you are saying

and 3rd
you do not know what you are saying-

You said you wouldn't think? What you think is irrelevant, you probably think Qaddafi sent his son to Nigeria for school? Do you think he spent his secondary schools learning yoruba? Or what do you think they do at schools people pay 100s of 1000s of pounds to attend?
They train you specifically on getting into these schools and guess what, most of them don't. No matter how much money your father has or donated you wont get into Oxbridge if you don't meet their requirements. Simples, there is no way about it. Prince William himself when he has kids should not even dream of sending them there if they don't have all a*s at Gcse and 4As at Alevels. They are not going to pass up on real talent for anything.
Besides there's a reason why standards are soo high- the courses there are difficult, you are not going to pass the first year unless you are academically equipped. I do agree the surveys can be political, but Oxbridge are not to be compared to anything when it boils down to academic excellence. and no, there are no 'dumb kids' there, not to anybodies standards.

Yeah right!!..You certainly know "a lot" on the things you talk about.

We are talking of money, you are talking of Prince Williams. How much money does he have?

How can you be so lame condemning the respected rankings without any points.
It this how to argue no premise to back up your claim just gave two examples
and for your info Kyung Hee University is in Seoul not Japan.

How can you be so lame believing everything you are given without questions?

Is this how you argue?...that is, what you take as facts is actually from what other people call facts and you take these without questions?

I don't give a toss if Kyung Hee is in Australia, it is completely irrelevant to the point I'm trying to make. Thanks for the correction though.

queensmith: I will agree university ranking is political but it is absolutely absurd to insinuate you will find anybody at Oxford one can consider 'dumb' that is a 'dumb' statement in itself. Oxbridge are possibly the only universities in the UK where the students are rigorously tested, interviewed, assessed, all sorts, there is no way to cheat, lie or scandal yourself through entry is purely based on academic merit. Even with the newly set up programmes to widen participation from poorer schools/backgrounds, oxbridge students/graduates remain top of the range. Damn even their lectures are not to be reckoned with! Please carry that nuisance statement up and out of here.

Thats an absolute ridiculous assertion.

Seriously?

Perhaps you have no idea. But one of the easiest way to get into an Ivy League is when your wealthy dad or grandad just happen to be an extremely important alumnus who at the same time is a big spender. I wouldn't think Qaddafi's son was really that smart and have passed all sorts of rigorous tests to get into LSE. A few million bucks donation skips all that!

You probably wouldn't find stupid people graduating from an Oxbridge and they probably remain some of the best Western Universities there is. That said, i remain suspicious of surveys that puts those Universities down as best in the world.

It is much easier for a University to pay lets say Financial Times a few bucks for a nice place in a survey ranking...than for FT to go through all the trouble and take on the cost to conduct an objective survey of all the Universities in the World. What's in it for FT?

HiiiPower: If you think these kids would be deported,
then you need to have your head examined.
Most of the universities in the UK are
rubbish. Most graduates (both home and international students)
from these universities can't even write
an essay to save their lives. Don't even expect most of them
to say anything reasonable, most of them are just dumb and they have
first and second class degrees.

UK universities thrive on international students,
they won't deport them.

Finally someone who knows what he's saying!

Could you sir, also send an email to Damian Green just so he knows what your position is on this important subject?

You must be deceiving yourself. If you are 100% right about that, why would people from abroad be paying millions of Naira or foreign currencies to come and study in the UK? Either they are all foolish or being deceived, or either you are blatently deceiving yourself. I like to believe the later is right

So you actually don't believe majority are foolish and are being deceived by clever marketing materials?

I think you may be the one deceiving yourself.

This is a big lesson. If your University gets advertised on the tube, facebook, London buses, Metro, Evening Standard, Nairaland...etc It may be an early warning that your fate may not be too far from those of students at LMU.

That asides, i get a strong feeling that students who have the money can institute a sort of class action law suit against the University. For breach of contract, breach of trust, loss of income, Emotional Distress, Fraud, Conspiracy to commit fraud, Expenses etc etc....something may give!

What are you on about.

See below the criteria for the measurements.

Specialising in Electronics does not place you at the top of the list you know grin

Criteria for world rankings :

1.Teaching
2.International outlook
3.Industry income
4.Research
5.Citations

Again, this wouldn't make much sense unless there's a way to measure and track those variables defined above. How do you assign a certain score for teaching in the UK differently from teaching in Japan? Who decides the right score? If schools in China teach students to perform calculus at the age of 6, how much score is fair to assign that compared with schools that teach calculus to second year University students?

If United States is in a recession and the average student couldn't secure a Job after graduation unlike a student in Iran, should that place US universities below Universities in Iran?

How is research scored? by the quantity of research or the quality or both? If a school published 10 academic papers that could could forever change theories that are grounded in physics and another school published 200 academic papers that could improve food production and men's sexual health....which one is more important? which should get a bigger score? who determines this?

What surveys are conducted? over what time period? how are schools with different syllabus or structures ranked together?

If one ever wondered about the possibilities of comparing apples with monkeys, i can't yet find a better example than the bizarre case of ranking schools across the globe based on an individual's perception of good, bad and ugly.

You do not know what you are talking about.

The UK has some of the best universities in the world other than Cambridge and Oxford.

1. University of Manchester - World Rank 48
2. University of Liverpool - World Rank 181
3. University of Leeds - World Rank 133
4. University of Birmingham - World Rank 148
6. London School of Economics - World Rank 47
7. University of Sussex - 99
8. University of Bristol - 66

The list goes on and on.

Now let us start with our best university of Ibadan which is ranked 2475 not even near to some of the worst in the UK.

I am just trying to correct your wrong impression that only Oxbridge schools are of a high standard.

We have a long way to go.

Most of these surveys are nonsensical, political and trivial by nature. I'd want a really sound argument that puts University of Sussex at 99 and Kyung Hee University of Japan at 351.

Asides a few globally renowned Universities (which always appear in the top 10 anyway) i would argue that there's not yet a logical way to track and provide a fair ranking for up to 7800 Universities that are based on different structures.

Travel / 2000 Students Face Deportation Within 60 Days by violent(m): 9:09am On Aug 30, 2012
More than 2,000 students could face deportation from Britain after the Government stripped a university’s right to admit and sponsor foreigners.
London Metropolitan University has had its Highly Trusted Status (HTS) for sponsoring international students revoked and will no longer be allowed to authorise visas, according to the institution's website.
The move could mean more than 2,000 students being deported within 60 days unless they can find another sponsor, according to the National Union of Students.

The university's HTS status was suspended last month while the UK Border Agency (UKBA) examined alleged failings.
A statement posted on the university's website tonight read: ‘The implications of the revocation are hugely significant and far-reaching, and the university has already started to deal with these.

‘Our absolute priority is to our students, both current and prospective, and the university will meet all its obligations to them.’
The NUS today contacted Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May to ‘express anger at the way that decisions have been made in recent weeks and to reiterate the potentially catastrophic effects on higher education as a £12.5 billion per year export industry for the UK’.
NUS president Liam Burns said: ‘It is disgusting that international students continue to be used as a political football by politicians who seem either incapable of understanding, or are simply uncaring about the impact of their decisions on individuals, universities and the UK economy

This decision will create panic and potential heartbreak for students not just at London Met but also all around the country.
‘Politicians need to realise that a continued attitude of suspicion towards international students could endanger the continuation of higher education as a successful export industry.
‘This heavy-handed decision makes no sense for students, no sense for institutions and no sense for the country.

This situation and the botched process by which the decision was arrived at could be avoided if international students were not included in statistics of permanent migrants.’
An NUS survey carried out earlier this year after changes to international student policies found that 40 per cent of foreign students would not recommend Britain as a study destination.
The advocacy group also said that in recent weeks they had heard from an increased amount of students who now feel unwelcome in the UK.

The picture provides a vivid description of the modern day Nigeria. Chaotic, Confused, Uninspiring, mutilated, depressed, irreparable and abandoned with a completely bleak future!

Why we as a nation, are so cursed, to thrive in such despicable filth despite the land flowing with milk and honey (what milk and honey?) is beyond human understanding.

tendercharles: Its now a normal trend among married ladies, they dont completely replace their father's name with their husband's name. I believe the husband should be in full possession of the woman after wedding but she, still having to use her father name creates a notion that she still 'partly' belongs to her father. I can't allow my wife to retain father's name after our wedding oo. What do you guys think?

"be in full possession"

I guess it just never occurred to me that a man must be in "full possession of his wife": as my experience with this phrase has tend to be limited to the times my amazon book orders arrive late and I've had to email the seller demanding to know when i'd be in "full possession of my books"...or the times i cheer for the bubsy boys for dominating a footy match and being in "full possession of the ball"!

Being in full possession of your wife will assume your wife can be used and tossed by you like all other items mentioned above, No?

We Nigerians reply with sentiments on this forum. When concerns us, we remember culture but when it doesn't we move right ahead.

I remember a thread where one guy talked about how nasty his SIL was to him when he visited her un announced, everyone was screaming blue murder on that thread ....."courtesy demands this and Courtsey demands that."...he should have informed her before coming how rude but BUSYBODY and one DAILYGUY's comments humbled me, they asked if we were so in a hurry to forget about where we are came from?, have we become so westernized that our traditional values have been swept under the carpet?" when did people start announcing their visits before time? What happened in those days when we had no form of communication? If BIL informed his brother isn't it enough already?

these same people talking about how nigerians need to change their cultural views or how our traditional values are fckud up, supported these nairalanders comments indirectly. Is it not the same Nigerian values? Why do we only pick them when it suits our opinion at that point in time?

May God save us all including myself

PS, I'm mobile pardon errors

What rubbish culture? Culture defined by whom? By folks who lived many years ago and couldn't develop their IQs to full potential?...Once upon a time in the same culture, killing of twins was an acceptable norm, shall we revisit that in the name of protecting our culture?

Business / Re: CBN To Introduce N5,000 Note by violent(m): 12:28am On Aug 24, 2012
ekt_bear: So your argument is that:

1) Employees are paid in cash. In other words, employer withdraws huge cash from the bank, hands it out to employees
2) If they are now paid in units of N5k by the employer, then they won't deposit this money in their bank account
3) Banks will suffer liquidity as a result

Is this your argument?

If so, are you sure that (1) is true? Are teachers, civil servants, etc paid in cash?

Again, the whole point to this is to think of possible effects. It may be difficult to say for sure the percentage of people that get paid in cash. My dad for instance still pays his employees in cash. same thing with many of his friends.
Business / Re: CBN To Introduce N5,000 Note by violent(m): 12:24am On Aug 24, 2012
Aren't there plenty of ways for my to do this anyways? Euros, dollars, pounds, etc. USD 50 is like N7500.

Dodgy people will always find a way to do what they want to do, whether this is introduced or not.

Probably. But the cost and ease of obtaining foreign exchange makes it a relatively cumbersome process.
Business / Re: CBN To Introduce N5,000 Note by violent(m): 12:20am On Aug 24, 2012
ekt_bear: Regarding (a), how quickly do you deplete the cash in your own wallet? For me personally, 2 weeks max, and then I visit the ATM again. Surely for you or most people, it will be 1 month max.

Regarding (b), it cannot be the case that the amount of cash Nigerians have in their wallets right now is up to 1% of the total. Most of it is going to be in banks, stored at home, etc.

As an example, in 2009 while talking to a friend who worked at a Nigerian Bank that has now been merged. He mentioned to me that the local branch of his Bank at Apata in Ibadan had only a couple of millions in Cash Assets. Most of this is made up of the salary of teachers and many other mid level civil servants.

In the case that these guys get paid in cash of 5k denominations, the immediate effect on the bank will be manifested in the reluctance of it's most important customers to make deposit savings which will eventually affect the amount it had to make available for small scale lending.
Business / Re: CBN To Introduce N5,000 Note by violent(m): 12:13am On Aug 24, 2012
ekt_bear: How long will N30k in cash last for a "big" Nigerian?

They can go through that in a couple hours.

Like, nobody is going to carry so much cash on their persons that it will last for like 6 months, right?

Time frame is more 1 week to 1 month, not 6 months or a year.

This wouldn't only apply to Nigerian big men alone but even more to mid and low earning folks. It means an employer can afford to pay off salary in a couple of notes..

So a guy earning 60k who got paid in 12 notes will likely be reluctant to take this to a bank and will likely hold on to it for much longer.

Also, it may be convenient for some dodgy Nigerian "big men" to hold their billions in small briefcases as it wouldn't normally attract the unwanted attention of monitoring agencies.
