Foreign AffairsBiden Administration Announces Largest-ever Oil Reserve Release by Vixlot(op): 7:28pm On Mar 31, 2022
The White House on Thursday announced plans for the largest-ever release of oil from the United States’ strategic reserves.

It said in a fact sheet that it would release an average of 1 million barrels per day for the next six months, resulting in a total release of about 180 million barrels.

The move comes as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine causes oil, and thus gasoline, prices to skyrocket. Many buyers are rejecting Russian barrels, creating less overall supply and increased demand from elsewhere.

This has caused headaches for the Biden administration, which was already grappling with high consumer prices that have fueled GOP attacks. Oil supply had not rebounded to meet demand following coronavirus lockdowns, keeping prices elevated.

The move on Thursday follows prior releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, including 30 million barrels earlier this month.

“These barrels will be a wartime bridge to additional U.S. production and other production that we expect later this year,” a senior administration official told reporters, noting that the plan was coordinated with U.S. allies.

The official said that the joint efforts would supply “well over” 1 million barrels each day to the market.

The announcement was part of a broader plan released on Thursday that the White House said would address rising domestic gas prices. President Biden is scheduled to deliver remarks later Thursday about the efforts to reduce gas prices.

Additionally, the administration is putting pressure on oil companies to ramp up production on federal lands where drilling permits have been approved but unused.

The White House fact said that Biden would call on Congress to approve legislation that would “make companies pay fees on wells from their leases that they haven’t used in years and on acres of public lands that they are hoarding without producing.”

The senior administration official described it as a “use it or lose it” policy.

Such legislation, however, would face high hurdles given Democrats’ extremely slim majorities in Congress and the Senate’s 60-vote threshold for most votes.

The White House also said that Biden would authorize the use of the Defense Production Act to support the production and processing of minerals for batteries used in clean energy and electric vehicles, part of an effort to transition the U.S. to clean energy overtime and reduce dependence on oil.

Specifically, it will boost production of lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite and manganese for large-capacity batteries.

The Defense Production Act gives the president the ability to boost production of certain supplies.

The White House has grappled with how to address rising gas prices and broader inflation over the last several months, which officials say will be exacerbated by Russia’s war in Ukraine and resulting sanctions on Moscow.

Biden earlier this month announced plans to ban U.S. imports of Russian energy, and European nations have also pledged to reduce their dependence on Russian gas and oil.

Polls show the public increasingly concerned about inflation, including rising gas prices. An NBC News poll taken before Biden’s trip to Europe last week showed that 83 percent of Americans worry that Russia’s war in Ukraine would increase the price of gas and other goods and services.

The White House has tried to point the finger at Russian President Vladimir Putin, dubbing the surge in gas costs “Putin’s price hike.”

But Biden’s approval rating dipped to the lowest level of his presidency in the NBC poll, and it found that 63 percent disapprove of his handling of the economy in particular, suggesting that the American public is taking out frustrations about gas prices and other inflation on the president.

Last year, the U.S. consumed about 20 million barrels of oil per day.

Oil is traded globally, so the market is shaped by the entire world, not just the U.S. While global factors, rather than White House actions, have been largely responsible for the price hike, Republicans nevertheless doubled down on their criticism of Biden’s energy policies in the wake of Thursday’s announcement.

“President Biden has once again resorted to tapping into the nation’s oil reserve to try and cover up the ramifications of his disastrous anti-American energy policies,” Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) said in a statement.

Frank Macchiarola, senior vice president of policy, economics and regulatory affairs at the American Petroleum Institute oil lobbying group, acknowledged in a statement that the move could provide “near-term relief” but said that it is “not a long-term solution.”

PoliticsNLC To Wike: You’ll Kill All Workers In Nigeria, We’ll Not Support You by Vixlot(op): 5:44pm On Mar 31, 2022
The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has vowed never to support Governor Nyesom Wike’s presidential ambition.

The State NLC said that the Governor does not take care of civil servants and pensioners in the State, wondering if the former minister wants to kill all the workers in Nigeria by aspiring to take over at Aso Rock.

The Rivers State NLC chairman, Mrs Beatrice Itubo said this during an interview on Rhythm 93.7 FM Port Harcourt, accusing Wike of subjecting workers and pensioners to untold hardship.

The NLC Chairman pointed out that offices in public schools, the State secretariat and hospitals, were empty because the Governor had refused to employ fresh staff.

“We have seen what is happening here in Rivers State. Pensioners have not been paid their gratuity since the inception of this administration. Workers have not been promoted since the inception of this administration,” she said.

“Everywhere in the secretariat, even the schools and hospitals are empty. No workers, people are not employed,” she stated.

She said that everybody in the State was aware of what is going on, adding, “So, do you need a soothsayer to tell you? All of us know as well as I do,” vowing that personally, there was no way Wike is getting her support.

Foreign AffairsIntel Gap That Caused The US To Overestimate Russia's Capabilities by Vixlot(op): 4:31pm On Mar 29, 2022
Gen. Tod Wolters, commander of US European Command, said there “could be” an intelligence gap in the US’ intelligence gathering that caused the US to overestimate Russia’s capability and underestimate Ukraine’s defensive capability in the current Ukraine crisis.

Wolters made the comments during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday.

When Sen. Roger Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi, asked if there was an intelligence gap that caused the US to overestimate Russia and underestimate Ukraine, Wolters said “there could be.”

“There could be and as we’ve always done in the past, when this crisis is over with, we will accomplish a comprehensive after-action review in all domains and in all departments and find out where our weak areas were and make sure we can find ways to improve, and this could be one of those areas,” Wolters said.
On Ukrainian advances: Wolters said he believes Ukrainian forces will be able to stall the Russians in the east of the country, but not that he believed they could push the Russian forces back.

He also said that 70% to 75% of Russia’s forces are “devoted” to the Ukrainian invasion “from a Russian perspective at this time.”

Foreign AffairsTrump Says Putin Made A 'big Mistake' Invading Ukraine by Vixlot(op): 7:27am On Mar 27, 2022
Former President Donald Trump on Saturday repeated his praise of several authoritarian leaders, calling Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Un "smart."

During a rally in Commerce, Georgia, Trump referred to those authoritarian leaders as strong, saying "the smartest one gets to the top."

Trump said China's Xi was smart because he "runs 1.5 billion people with an iron fist," while he called North Korea's Kim "tough." Both Xi and Kim have been widely condemned by the international community for human rights abuses.

Trump also repeated some praise for Putin, while distancing himself from previous remarks that seemed more fully supportive of the Russian leader.

"They asked me if Putin is smart. Yes, Putin was smart," Trump told a crowd of rally-goers.

After acknowledging that Putin had made a "big mistake" in attacking another country and its people, Trump said the Russian leader's massive buildup on the border ahead of the invasion appeared to be a "great negotiation."

"That's a hell of a way to negotiate, put 200,000 troops on the border," Trump said. "That was a big mistake, but it looked like a great negotiation. That didn't work out too well for him."

Trump previously called Putin "very savvy" after the Russian president declared he would recognize two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine as independent days before invading, which drew criticism from both Democrats and Republicans. Trump later attempted to walk those comments back and has condemned the invasion.

During Saturday's rally, Trump also suggested President Biden was weak in comparison to the authoritarian leaders, and said the president "should recuse himself from anything having to do with Ukraine" because of his son's business dealings in the country, which became the subject of GOP attacks during the 2020 presidential campaign.
