Several injured as Police control crowd with teargas

Delegates and supporters have been teargassed as security operatives struggled to control entry into the venue of the ongoing All Progressives (APC) National Convention at the Eagle Square in Abuja.

Several persons sustained injuries in the ensuing stampede.

The two entrances into the Square, through the Office of the Head of Service axis as well as the Federal Secretariat car park axis, were jam-packed with hundreds of supporters and delegates that tried to make their way to the venue.

At the Head of Service axis, the crowd overpowered the policemen on guard and pushed the gate wide open and dozens of people, including those who were not accredited, poured in.

The police resorted to teargassing everyone before managing to close the gate and resume admitting only persons accredited despite the rowdiness.

PoliticsAPC Convention: Aspirants Defy Buhari, Refuse To Embrace Consensus by Vixlot(op): 7:21am On Mar 26, 2022
Some aspirants vying for various positions in the All Progressives Congress, including those seeking the office of the national chairman at today’s convention have refused to step down.

This is contrary to the appeal by the President, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), that those who would be voted into offices should emerge by consensus.

It was learnt that as of 9.30pm on Friday several aspirants were still meeting at various locations in Abuja. Saturday PUNCH learnt that national chairmanship aspirants continued to meet for the second day with no agreement.

One of the aspirants, Saliu Mustapha, said he was still in the race, adding that consensus should be all-inclusive.

In a statement on Friday by the Director-General, Saliu Mustapha Campaign Organisation, Bala Usman, the aspirant said no consensus had been reached as far as he was concerned.

The statement read in part, “Our campaign organisation has received several calls from multitudes of party stakeholders, friends and associates regarding the upcoming convention of our party and the decision of Saliu Mustapha as an aspirant, especially in relation to the unravelling issue of a possible consensus arrangement.

“Indeed, we recognise consensus as one of APC’s acceptable leadership selection methods, which is completely legal and constitutional. However, we are convinced that for consensus to abide, it must be all-inclusive and devoid of any vestige of imposition.

“This is why Mallam Saliu Mustapha, together with all the other aspirants, would continue to engage to review the options before them and agree on a common and mutually beneficial decision. Until this is done, nothing has been decided yet.”

However, the APC said the much-expected Unity List proceeding from the wide consultations on consensus to pick party leaders would be out on Friday. Nonetheless, it was learnt that the list was delayed as governors continued to debate over the list.

The party reaffirmed that consensus remained its preferred mode of choosing its leaders.

Fielding questions from our correspondent at the party’s world press conference held at its national secretariat on Friday, the Chairman of the National Convention Media and Publicity Sub-committee, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, said the unity list would be out soon.

He said, “From what we have from the regions, the unity list will be ready today (Friday). It will be submitted. If you are talking of consensus, you must have a unity list, because that’s the whole essence of consensus.

“If you’re having consensus, you would have people who have agreed, aspirants who have agreed, stakeholders who have agreed, and the constituency that has agreed, and in that case, that name automatically will be adopted. That’s just the meaning of the unity list.”

However, speaking on Channels Television Politics Today, Sule said a former Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Adamu, had been adopted as the consensus candidate for the office of the national chairman.

PoliticsThere Is No Consensus Arrangement, Says Candidates Will Slug It Out-Fayemi by Vixlot(op): 9:27pm On Mar 24, 2022
Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has said he is not aware that President Muhammadu Buhari endorsed some candidates for the All Progressives Congress.

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has said he is not aware that President Muhammadu Buhari endorsed some candidates for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Convention.

There has been crisis in the ruling party over the endorsement of some persons for National Working Committee (NWC) positions of the APC.

Daily Trust had reported how President Muhammadu Buhari’s choice of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman created rift in the party.

But as parts of move to settle this, Buhari met with governors at Aso Rock on Wednesday after which a final agreement was reportedly reached on consensus.

A governor from the North West told Daily Trust that there was no objection when the endorsement of Adamu was raised. He said the issue of the national secretary was also resolved.

A top source, while corroborating the governor’s statement, said during the villa meeting, the governors aligned themselves with President Buhari’s position on Adamu.

“They aligned with the president’s position on Adamu as the national chairman while all other positions are as per the zoning earlier approved by the president,” the source said.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, said a truce has been reached to fill the NWC positions through consensus.

He said the PGF was in support of the chairmanship candidate being backed by President Buhari although he refused to name the candidate.

But speaking at a high-level policy dialogue organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), on Thursday, Fayemi said he was not aware of any agreement on consensus.

He said while it is within the rights of Buhari to have preferred candidates, he was not aware of that.

Fayemi said this while responding to one of the questions asked during the interactive session.

“As for your question on whether the President (Muhammadu Buhari) has anointed anyone, I have no knowledge of that. But the President is well within his rights to have a prefer candidate… if his candidate wins, fine; if his candidate loses, fine,” Fayemi said.

Asked to clarify his thoughts on the convention during a brief chat with journalists after the programme, Fayemi simply said, “You heard what I said.”

PoliticsTinubu Donates ₦1 Billion To LASU For Leadership Development Centre by Vixlot(op): 9:14pm On Mar 24, 2022
Presidential aspirant and Chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has donated a Centre of Leadership Development worth one billion naira to Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, announced the donation at the 25th convocation lecture of LASU on Thursday.

The theme of the Convocation Lecture was: “Global Trends: Nigeria and its Place in the World. Do We Love Ourselves Enough”.

Tinubu was represented at the event by Dr Obafemi Hamzat, Deputy Governor of Lagos State.

Speaking at event, Tinubu urged government support for strategic industries that would employ young people and unleash their productive capacity.

He said that government backing of strategic manufacturing and industries would open the door wider to youth-owned start-up businesses.

“National industrial and employment policies must jump from the pages of documents and come to real life.

“This will help to reform the society to improve the economic prospects of young people in it.

“We need a new more convivial way, a way that gives you the right start at a fair chance of durable prosperity.

“This is the moral duty of progressive government to resurrect a flagging economy; to do what the private sector can not do by itself,” Tinubu said.

He added that no longer should our national compass remain pointed towards poverty instead of prosperity and towards lack, instead of abundance.

“You graduates today should not live half lives or to subject your tremendous talents and aspirations to an economic condition that does not allow their full vent.

” That you now graduate from this exemplar of learning and knowledge means the right answer is within you.
