In the midst of turmoil in the Nigerian Education sector resulting in total shutdown due to strikes by ASUU, ASUP, NASU, LASU, SHASU, PASUMA, and other university unions, the ASUU Chairman has dealt a collective slap to the face of Nigerian students by procuring a Private Jet.

What does this tell us as Ghanaians, especially our struggling musicians who will borrow money and clear all their savings to go to South Africa or London for a music video just to showcase the red London buses?

Earlier in the week, the news on social media was the hijacking of Iyanay’s twitter account by hackers. However news reaching FNN claims that Iyanya the Kukere master whose account was hacked by unknown hackers has been requested to pay 10 million naira for the recovery of his account.

These hackers go by the name Social Kidnappers. Well currently Iyanya and his manger cannot have access to their accounts and have called on twitter management to come to their aid which have been really fruitless.

Luckily for FNN one of the hackers contacted our reporter to deliver this message to him. “Tell Iyanya to pay the sum of 10million naira or he should forget the account or he come and sleep with four of us”. We asked if they were male of female hackers, we got no response.

Asking why they decided to frustrate the Swell head singer, they replied “Iyanya own is too much always showing off his chest and licking his lips we have warned him before through NBA but he has refused. So we think this will be a befitting punishment for him”.

Although the police in has refused to make a comment, but a source at the station said that the “since the police has no jurisdiction on the internet, there is nothing they can do”.

In an interesting twist of events, airline operators in Nigeria are threatening to move their operations to Ghana over the imposition of new tariffs by the country’s aviation regulatory body the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The airline operators want to locate to Ghana in a bid to stay in business.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has imposed a new fee of $4, 000 on foreign registered and $300, 000 on Nigerian carriers per trip.

The move has angered airline operators in the country who say the latest development is not in tandem with global practice.

Weeks after some local airline operators in Ghana threatened to pull out of the country over unfavorable conditions in the aviation sector, their counterparts elsewhere in Nigeria are threatening to do same and in this case locate to Ghana.

In the case of Ghana’s airline operators, the high cost of aviation fuel as well as a growing list of local operators being given the nod to operate among others was reason for their threats to pull out.

For their Nigerian counterparts however, the imposition of a new tariff by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority of $4, 000 and $300, 000 for foreign registered and Nigerian carrier per trip is the reason for the threat.

The latest imposition means airline operators will be charged that amount for every take off they make.

The new fee will also affect private jet owners who engage in unscheduled (charter) operations.

Aside this fresh charge, the operators are also to pay navigational, landing and parking charges, passenger service charge and 5 per cent of the total revenue made if the flight is chartered.

Industry players in Nigeria say the development will see airline operators move their operations to Ghana where the charges are not only moderate but reasonable.

Two local airlines from Ghana, Starbow and Africa World Airlines were recently given the nod by Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority to operate in the country another local airline Antrak is also expected to be given the nod soon.

Starbow is yet to announce when it will begin plying that route will Africa world airline is expected to commence in October.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has filed a suit in the Federal High Court, Lagos challenging the reluctance of foreign and Nigerian registered airlines to pay some stipulated fees for their operation.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has cited Glo Mobile Network for increasingly being used for international SIM box fraud in Ghana.

Statistics from the NCA indicate that there has been a dramatic increase in fraudulent SIMs from around 2,500 in January, 2013, to nearly 30,000 in August, 2013.

This has put Glo in the lead with the highest number of fraudulent bypass activities, terminating international call traffic on other mobile operators’ platforms, thereby causing huge financial losses to the government and other operators.

However, officials of Glo say it is not Glo, as an institution, which is perpetrating the fraudulent activities but that they are the handiwork of fraudsters who have taken advantage of the low congestion, high speed Internet connectivity, low cost of charges and the freebies offered by the company on its platform to its clients.

Moreover, the officials of Glo say the company is losing more, as it is not gaining anything from the international calls but have to pay other operators who end up receiving those calls purportedly emanating from Glo.

They described SIM box fraud as the telecom ‘galamsey’, eating deep into the revenues of telecom operators.

SIM box fraud is an illegal process in which some unscrupulous persons in Ghana connive with partners abroad to re-route international calls and terminate them through a local phone number in Ghana to make it appear as if the call is a local one and, therefore, pay lower rates.


NCA Source

A highly placed source at the NCA told the Daily Graphic that the authority was in discussions with Glo Mobile to ensure compliance with laid down policies and directives regarding the menace.

“Our team of investigators uncovered that out of the number of SIM bypass activities exposed, Glo Mobile’s share of the fraud accounted for more than 80 per cent since May, 2012,” it said.

It indicated that the NCA recently directed Glo to disable within one hour “all SIMs detected by the authority or other mobile network operators which are being used for the fraudulent activities”.

It said Glo was also directed to ensure that only registered SIM cards verified by the NCA were activated for use.

It said the work of the NCA anti-management task force, in collaboration with the police, was yielding improvement, with the trend showing a gradual reduction in SIM box fraud on the part of the other operators, with the exception of Glo.


Experts

Industry experts the Daily Graphic spoke to described the level of SIM fraud as unprecedented, considering the fact that Glo’s current market share of telephony service was 1,633,379, representing only six per cent of the total market share.

They wondered why Glo Mobile, the latest entrant into the Ghanaian telecom market, with the smallest market share in terms of the 3G mobile technology, could not manage its subscriber base such that a large number of its SIMs could be used for fraud of such enormous proportion.


Glo Response

Responding to the issues, officials of Glo told the Daily Graphic that the company was more interested in stemming the menace of SIM box fraud than any institution could imagine.

According to them, the fraudsters were taking undue advantage of the fact that the network was new, with a low clientele, high-speed Internet connectivity, low cost of charges and freebies.

They said the NCA was aware of the efforts Glo had been making to deal with the problem, including de-activating identifiable SIM cards even before that came to the attention of the NCA.

“We have a system to monitor fraudulent activities, including SIM box fraud, but we are not firmly entrenched on the market to deal with these fraudsters,” they said.

The officials added that the fraudsters had become very sophisticated, with some generating manufacturer identities that could make it difficult to trace the sources.

They asked for punitive measures on fraudsters to stem the tide.
