EducationRe: UNILAG Students To Sue School Authority For Changing Their Courses by Walspring: 2:52am On Feb 20, 2016
janzguy:
Some medical students of the University of Lagos, Akoka,
who were given courses contrary to their choices, have threatened to take the institution to court if it fails to reverse its decision within seven days, starting from Wednesday, February 17.

They said they had petitioned the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahman Bello, the Federal Ministry of Education, the Senate Committee on Education, the National Universities Commission, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, among others, on the development, saying they wanted
favourable response before the ultimatum elapsed.

The students had reportedly met the pass mark set by UNILAG for them to move to 200 level, but most of them
were not admitted into the College of Medicine in Idi-Araba on the grounds that the quota given to the school was not sufficient.

Some of the students and their parents on Thursday protested against the development at PUNCH Place on the
Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, displaying placards, some of which read, “JAMB, NUC, please save our future, save our career, save our destiny, come to our aid,” “This scam must stop, we want our courses at the college of medicine”, “Prof. Rahman Bello, you are a Pharaoh, allow our children to cross to the promised college.”

The petition, which was signed by the principal solicitor for the aggrieved students, Jiti Ogunye, read in part, “We are solicitors to the students of the Faculty of Sciences in the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos State.

“By their performances in their first year course work and examinations, they met the requirements by having a
Cumulative Grade Point Average or cumulative score average of 50 in the groupings of courses for the Medicine
and Surgery, Medical Laboratory, Nursing, and Physiotherapy departments; and a 2.00 CGPA for students in Pharmacology, Physiology and Radiography departments to advance to 200 level and first year in the UNILAG College of Medicine.”

The petition stated further that the school had raised the requirements from 50 per cent and 2.0 CGPA to between 2.5 and 4.11 CGPA after the students had met the initial standards.

“We demand that the university rescind its decision by allowing our clients to register for the various medical programmes in the College of Medicine and commence attendance of classes. If the university fails or refuses to accede to our demand within seven days of the delivery of
this letter, we shall not hesitate to initiate a legal action against the University of Lagos in the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, for the judicial review of the administrative action.”

One of the students, Emmanuel Adebiyi, who wanted to study medicine, said he could not settle for pharmacology, which he was given by the school. He said, “I got 56, 58 and 72 in the three required courses, but I could not advance to 200 level to further my education as a medical student. We are being denied our rights. We appealed to the President to look into this. I was given Pharmacology, which I did not bargain for.”

A Medical Laboratory student, Samuel Sodipe, said he was eventually offered Botany, “which I don’t like.”

Evelyn Ajisafe said the decision of the school had caused “disorientation” of the affected students, adding that they
could not study what they did not apply for.

“At the end of my 100 level, I had 3.9 CGPA, which is above the 2.00 required by the school. I had already bought some materials for the college of medicine. But when the list came out, 19 out of 49 students were selected. I was among those that met the requirements, but not shortlisted. The university said there was a specific quota which we were not told about from the beginning. I want the school authorities to give us our normal courses. We are psychologically disturbed.”

One of the parents, who gave his name simply as Otunba Afolabi, said the claim by the VC that the affected students failed “is a blatant lie.”

“I have been having sleepless nights since this issue started. The school is trying to destroy the destiny of these children. I wanted my daughter to study Agriculture, but she insisted
that she wanted nursing. She tried her best and met the criteria – she had 60, 53 and 58. She had been receiving
lectures when the list came out and her name was not there,” he added.

The UNILAG spokesperson, Toyin Adebule, could not be reached for comment as his line rang out. A text message sent to his mobile phone had yet to be replied to as of time of filing this report.

the school told them earlier that the standard cgpa for crossing to CMUL has been scraped and crossing would be based on ur POSITION in class. instead of the student to be reading, they go around partying and they are now complaining. I support the school.
@mangala14

You must be high or maybe you didn't use your eye glass at all and you read the back of your phone..

You need to read this news again.. Check the bold part

You counter them as if you were there when the school told them about the cut off marks

Leave him. He will learn. You know how many corporations shut shut me down immediately they heard I'm on F-1? Lmao. I had an interview with Charles Schwab, the interview was going on smothly until the lady asked what my status was. Immediately I said F-1 she just said "We apologize... bla bla bla" and cut the line oo. Did not even give me time to explain. I emailed her back, but maybe she will reply me tomorrow sha.

Another one, I have had like 4 interviews with them, but when the recruiter kept talking about visa status, visa status, I knew I was done for. They kept me hanging for like 2 months before they sent me the rejection email. After I had filled form for background check o. Countless of interviews like that.

Anyways, experience is the best teacher. cheesy How are you jare?
For a fool and not for the wise

Western Union has a lower rate around 245-250. If u can send it to someone in the US to hold for u or when u get to the US someone sends it to from naija.
Nice one but in case he didn't trust anyone with his money, then he can be the sender and receiver as well when using western so that when he get to USA he can pick his money himself since it takes 180 days before western union return the money back to the sender if it is not picked up

hello house....please I need your advice, am applying for fall admission at southern Arkansas university, how's the school please?? do you think I can get admitted and visa cos am going for master's in public administration, someone trying to discourage me about going for the course that I may not get a visa maybe because, the vo may perceive it's better to study the course here.....please you advice is needed
You better stop getting bad advise somewhere and focus on how you will tell VO that you truly have passions for the course..

When it comes to visa interview each applicants case/interview are treated different therefore what was used to deny someone does not mean it will be used to deny somebody

Sometimes I wonder when will PMB will arrest GEJ but it won't be possible because I checked the history of our past leaders from Head of states to presidency, no one ever probe each other..

I wish PMB focus and do what is matter now since we Nigerians are getting wiser every seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and yearly because to vote for him and his party will be hard..

If truly we truly we want Nigeria to be great, we need to shut down the National Assembly first and that is the assembly of corrupted leaders

hi guys,
pls i would like to know if its safe to receive my i-20 via regular mailing services and not courier services that charge like dhl, ups. although i heard its not safe since shipment may delay for a month plus.
You can risk it if you stay in Lagos and sometimes it takes 2 weeks or a month (if their head is valid in profojah2 voice) or more than a month but if you don't stay in Lagos do not try taking the risk..

Hello Guys,
Please advice me on this. I got my F1 Visa in December but was unable to travel and the school said I can come in Summer.. But I am not sure I want to go in summer. Whats the probability of getting the Visa if I re-appear again in fall since my current Visa would have expired by August.

Please Urgent !
You don't need to re apply and go for another visa interview again because you have a year grace to enter USA before the 2 years visa expired which means you can still attend for fall semester..

My friend who applied to renew his visit visa through a dropbox was later called to appear at the embassy for interview, when he got there, they asked him why he spent 5 months instead of then intended 1 month hetold them at the interview, he explained to them them that on arrival to the US, he got an admission to do a masters programme and he then applied for a change of status to a student visa and when it was not approved, he had to return home at the 5th month. He didn't want to overstay.
Now, the VO asked him to come back for his passport in 3 months time, by then his visa would have expired. What could be the problem pls for holding his passport that long ?
I think they want to look into what he told them which means they are going to start verification process from now and with 3 months and who knows it might not take longer.

Did they give him Administrative process(ing) form?

Thanks for the information , then i will write the Tofel exam , but do u think is necessary I write SAT... But wat if I take up the conditional Admission is that gonna be a problem at the embassy.
Conditional admission is not a good thing at all just go and write the required exam and get unconditional admission which will boost your chances during visa interview
