Very true. Other than that, considering the rogue tactics they've employed in the past, I wonder if they won't sneak in something under the table for those who have hacked PSPs (conspiracy thought)

Not much of a fan of the Tomb Raider series but what do you think about seeing a new face for the game franchise?

There's a new Lara Croft in town, and she's a 23-year-old gymnast from South London, Tomb Raider publisher Eidos announced this week.

Ever since actress Rhona Mitra first took on the role of Tomb Raider heroine Lara Croft in 1997, Eidos has sought real-life counterparts for its acrobatic archaeologist heroine, and they've helped propel the video game series to worldwide sales topping 32 million. Up until now the British publisher's picks have tended to be models or, like Jolie, movie stars, but Alison Carroll might just be the first Croft to have the physical abilities to do her famously acrobatic opposite number justice.

Carroll boasts 12 years of gymnastics training and numerous honors representing Great Britain in sporting displays. Although her Lara role won't involve any movie work, she'll still be kept sufficiently busy traveling the world promoting the latest Tomb Raider game, Underworld, to allow her to quit her day job -- as a receptionist.

"It's unbelievable how realistic [Lara's] movements are in Tomb Raider: Underworld and it's so gratifying to be able to use my years of gymnastic training to portray such a beloved character," Carroll said in a press release.

Although Carroll's more than able to match Croft kick for kick, she's still undergoing a training regime that includes weapons classes in Eastern Europe, survival technique instruction from British SAS troops, and -- naturally -- a crash course in archaeology.

It is hoowever not a bad idea to keep a couple of browsers on your machine - atleast the most used ones like IE, Firefox and Opera to test designs before they even go online.
Yup. Very true. I test with IE6, IE7 and FF. There are emulators that enable you run 6 & 7 together. For benefit of the thread you can find such using Multiple IEs (Win Xp only)

WebmastersRe: Even Obama's Site Is Riddled With Errors by WebMonk(m): 7:04pm On Jun 20, 2008
i checked it out (Firefox) and everything seems fine (perhaps they have secret military department that check every link on obama and saw your post - who knows?) cheesy

As for quality assurance wise, i'm sure we won't get any progress in that regard until people actually start giving value to their websites

However, negligible errors will always abound, especially when WYSIWYGs are used (i used TotalValidator). The most important thing, i suppose, is to ensure all works well in most browsers, considering that newer browsers tend to suppress these errors (I stand corrected though)
WebmastersRe: Rate My Dating Site by WebMonk(m): 8:58pm On Jun 18, 2008
@poster, i don't mean any ill, but i'm sure if you compare your website with something like yahoo personals, i think you'll get what yawatide was saying.

At the end of the day, a web project boils down to 2 things:

1: Design
2: Function

Combination of these 2? Value That's what the web is all about.

Look at it this way: The audience that you're trying to meet, for the most part, probably already have a dating site that they spend their time on. What do you have to offer them that they don't already have?

The sites that people come to are those that give them VALUE. No one complains about the ads on Facebook because there are other things that Facebook has to offer besides Ads

Jst an advice

WebmastersRe: Web Designer And Developer, Possible? by WebMonk(m): 9:40pm On Jun 13, 2008
So many titles for a similar set of skills. shocked I go remix my own o!

But to the topic, uspry1 has raised many valid points. As per the job issue sha - I'm convinced that if you have da skills you can get the cheese. Most of those Job hirers in the graphics market know what they are looking for. They've seen what jaw dropping graphics can do (ever remember that feeling you had for visiting a site that was wonderful, even if there wasn't much you could do with it?). For the most of it, if need be, they will hire someone else to do the programming. And in developed countries, this is actually the case (division of labour), as opposed to the overabused "master of all trades" mentality due to economic factors. Afterall, ideal jobs are scarce.

I remembered when i went for an interview for the position of a graphics/web designer. Nine people asked questions concerning my skills (conference style - and not your "which HTML tag does what?" kind of questions). I handled every question like a friend waking me up from sleep and asking for my name, simply because i got my hands dirty for 2yrs prior. But i wouldn't have been that good if did both programming/designing at the same time. But give me time to enter programming and imagine how my resume will be like cheesy

Focus on one and the other will follow.
WebmastersRe: Email Retrieval With Php - Help Anyone? by WebMonk(op): 8:50pm On Jun 13, 2008
sbucareer:

Why do you need to reinvent the wheel? Use Outlook Express to access any known email server on Earth. As long as you know the email server config, I don’t see why Outlook cannot retrieve your emails.

About marking read and unread attributes, log into your original email facade and go to setting and configure your server to allow program to retrieve emails and leave the original email in the server.

Unless there is another requirement you are trying to achieve without our direct knowledge, Outlook will be sufficient for your task.
Thanks, but what i actually want to do is to create FROM SCRATCH a php program that carries out an action if it detects a mail, specifically using a cron job to check for set intervals (more like the 1st example), so all actions are carried out on the server without my interaction

But it seems that where i need to go requires me to reinvent the wheel. And e no b small task.

@uspry1:
Yes - i'm familiar with the contact form. i've also done form to email questionaire scripts. Thanks
WebmastersEmail Retrieval With Php - Help Anyone? by WebMonk(op): 7:24pm On Jun 13, 2008
I'm looking for a script or tutorial (preferably a class) that can access the email account of a domain (something like address@domain.com), retrieve unread messages AND mark the unread msgs as read, as opposed to deleting them. Most of the tutorials I've seen use classes that are either old (1999) or use deprecated functions (now everyone's using PHP5), and it seems components like SwiftMailer are for sending mails rather than reading them. Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated. I could have used a webmail based script, but i need this particular function specifically to for an app I'm building, so better to learn from scratch.

Examples of what it could be used for:

- Wordpress can post a blog article for you if you send an email with the article to a specific mail address that wordpress can access automatically. It checks for mail and adds the post if it finds a unique code in the mail (something you specified)

- Similar actions shd be possible for custom CMSes where YOU can schedule routine functions rather than logging unto the site and doing the same (particularly useful if you're somewhere it takes an hour to open your mail or when you're blogging on the move - with your phone)

the possibilities are endless - if i can get the email class up and running - any help? I'm no pro to php so be easy on me.
WebmastersRe: Web Designer And Developer, Possible? by WebMonk(m): 6:48pm On Jun 13, 2008
It's possible - but are you willing to pay the cost?

You'll know deep within yourself that the dedication you put into programming is roughly the same as into designing. I've dabbled fairly deep into both to know this much. It's now up to you to decide how much of your time you're willing to trade to acquire whatever skills (graphical) you think you're lacking in.

But eventually, you'll end up being proficient in both, though one will always be higher than the other. I started from designing and now into programming and i could very much ask myself the same question. But as i hack into it everyday, i know it's possible (and given the hell i went through in CSS - i dare say that it is a programming language in that context grin)

Start with Fireworks. Its beautiful and user friendly, and there are more than a legion of Firework Zealots here on Nairaland. Then, if the obsession for jaw dropping and bandwidth efficient graphics overwhelms your soul - be sure to turn to the dark side - Photoshop!!!https://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/msg/emoticons/vader.gif(i hope i don't start another photoshop vs fireworks war!)

@ poster:

Surely you could have come up with a better topic title than what you have. Rather than helping, the title scares people from doing online business or anything related - which is vital in our time. Its the kind of stuff that force banks to disable the cards for online use, which on the contrary doesn't solve the problem at all. People are suffering from lack of knowledge, and how the people are "sensitized" by that knowledge is pivotal to how they will take action.
