^^ Thanx. But how about a tip or two in the same vein? It doesn't have to be detailed, but enough. I will wait a bit and see how the thread goes before commenting further. |

Like a ghostly zombie that will not die, this issue still plagues me. Clients want scripts and more "interactive bang" for their buck, but they're not even willing to upgrade their browsers from IE6. These days no one even develops a script with IE6 in mind, but with our nigerian counterparts, we're very far off. I'm really up to the neck in this issue that I'm going redirect all "defaulters" to www[dot]whichbrowserforme[dot]org When I stumbled on this site, I had a small grin on my face - perfect. Truth of the matter is, we've all got to push for more people to drop that cankerworm of a browser. |
@tomX:^^ Wow, nice. @Poster: In addition to tomX, you could get a flash obfuscator that scrambles the actionscript inside a flash (swf) file, to protect the URL of the actual flash animation from being revealed by flash decompilers |
imrandbest:Chances are you have a DB/Table previously created that's preventing a new installation of wordpress (this would be the case if you have more than one instance of wordpress, in parallel or consecutively). Check you Databases/Tables. (Usually the Fantastico creates a new database for each instance of wordpress.Even if you deleted the files manually, chances are the db (for the first/previous) will still be there.) |
interesting topic. I saw the ad. and after scanning through everything, I hissed and closed d window. They expect one guy to do all that? Yes, and there are people who can, but they definitely did not gain all that knowledge by looking at their screen and sitting diddly squat. Blood, sweat and tears were traded for that knowledge, and it won't come cheap. especially to a company which, like others have said, would probably not see that much in value, and pay accordingly (but then again, few companies in nigeria do, with no regulation and all). Me personally? I've been there (to a certain scale), done it (heck, most of us have), and I DON'T like it. If i'm going to be swiss blading all my skills, I prefer reporting to ME. This, I believe, globacom does not understand: the kind of people who have all these skills (that they are looking for) won't use them for someone else. I mean, would you, seriously? Then again, someone else will always take it |
^^@hostmot Exellent contribution to the thread. Offtopic, besides using table-less format for your website, Commenting in your mother's tongue really has me inspired this early in the morning. |
@Topic - Maybe they could have a podcast service? I listen to CNN podcasts on the hour every hour (when I can), mostly on my way to work. This actually beats sitting down to sieve through news when you can have a compressed "best" of the new per hour (as a 2MB file). People might argue how many people will patronize such, but If they redesigned their site, i see no reason why they can't do podcasting. |
It shouldn't. Not even the slightest "non belonging" slash . Defeats the goal of separating code from layout. But is damn-as-hell-convenient when done the first time. I've fumed over this in similar scenarios, CMSes in particular. At the very least, the top level elements should not be included in the Database. |
like someone said, bellanaija is a one of the few success stories because of one factor and one factor alone (IMO): Value. If i want to know about what's happening in naija's celebrity society, I know i'm getting good quality content @ bella naija. Having said that, if you have good value, a thorough planning and some due diligence will do wonders. |
Redirects ok. I'm using a Nokia E63 on Wifi to access your site. You might want to shorten the size of the page to about 4-5 posts You can also test for mobile compatability via http://www.ready.mobi . It's a site that tests mobile sites to W3C standards. You can test for a variety of phones via the site from top manufactuers such as Nokia, Samsung, Sagem, and Motorola Hope this helps. Well done.

Awesome!! My patience is paying off!!! Looks like Sony will have the last laugh (b4 you start flaming, I have an x360 picking dust from RROD) |
I love the idea of the image of the phone browsing the mobile version of the site (If that's what you intended). but doesn't it feel repetitive? Browsing on your phone to send SMS - just joking all in all, a neat design. like yawa said, awaiting the HTML version, |
An experience I believe can benefit everyone who holds the web at heart. (This is not a preaching sermon - just read it for what it is) I took the day off to locate a company that handles prometric exams. Their location was stated on their website, but going somewhere for the first time always poses a challenge. On getting there, I whipped out my phone to call the company for further directions. To my dismay, poor network connection (between mine and that of the company), so i can't get through. I needed to try another number, and i wasn't with my laptop to check their site for it. That's when the idea to browse the company's website via my phone comes to mind. Brilliant! I should be able to get the second number and call them. Problem solved. And that's where the problem starts, First of all, I disabled loading images (Saves cost) on my phone browser, so what usually happens when you enter a site designed with Firework tables? Other than HTML text, you get NOTHING. The navigation text were images with NO alternate text, So I couldn't use the navigation on the site to point me to the contact detail page. After trial and error (and some extra charge) I find what I'm looking for. But it doesn't have to be this way. We live in a time where people who can't find what they are looking for in one place will find it elsewhere. Too many options. We want information, and we want it now. An increasing number of such people won't be using desktops, but mobiles. My experience is just one of the thousands that I believe happen everyday. who doesn't access facebook mobile? Recommendation? Use <LI> tags to define your navigation. Even if images are disabled it'll still show the text as a link. Alternate text for images is a must too. It's simple and we all know it, but it would have made one major difference for me today if the webmaster behind the site had mobile browsers in mind. With more web enabled phone we should strive to make our sites more mobile friendly (and for the record, I'm guilty as well, though to a lesser extent) PS: Again, read it as it is, not who's saying it. |

@yawa Reminds me of a similar discussion on why ugly sites sell better, to which the summary that my memory can only supply is that it creates a sense of (for lack of a better word at 2.38am in the morning) intimacy/trust. EG: " This guy's site shows it was designed by somebody, not some large company that won't even blink before ignoring me on my wallet size". Of course, I say this on a limb, since we have no idea how the site is. But since you say it's that bad, then I think the aforementioned reason/purpose is defeated, yes? Or perhaps he was trying the simple approach? Weird things sure happen on the road to simplicity/minimalistic. He could have taken away, and taken away, until there was nothing left. ![]() @Topic: I think it depends on what you call "simple". A simple website isn't about the minimal sum of it's elements/part. It's just the by-product of a well thought out process that conveys a set of options to the user in the most user friendly, graphically appealing and efficient manner. that said, the wealthiest clients could have the "simplest" websites, barring the exceptions of course. Has anyone got lost on Youtube? ![]() EDIT: Also depends on the Web Designer/Developer the rich people pick. |
You could also add a map on how to get to the palms, courtesy of Google Maps. Here's the link. I just got a phone today this was the first added content i saw using Google Maps. It helps for tourists/people who need directions, considering that GPS is slowly becoming mainstream. That's my contribution. Good luck, and please make us proud. |
I rarely do this, but I'll say your site rocks. lovely clean layout. the only issue i have is the navbar text on its side. it's more legible if it's swapped horizontally. My opinion. |
Seun:I read your post. True. However, what ever hitches the article pointed out (which can be fixed, given 'liberal creativity', as he stated) do not in a any remote significance taint the benefits of using CSS for layout. tables have their place, and grasping CSS isn't exactly for the tabular oriented, but as someone said but it's the solution, not the problem My Sample 3-Column-Layout-Code |
dinozzo:BAD GUY. How much? Just joined the xbox360 train. Playing Assasin's Creed. Beautiful! |
smartsoft:perhaps, perhaps not. and please, try to get my screen name correctly, no additions. Okay? @hanen: U type too fast. Compliment. |
Some thoughts: 1) First off, I would say design (graphic wise) starts as an art, and ends as an art. Some have the gift (inherent in them), while others have the calling (They might start off on shaky ground, but with effort/time refine themselves). So you can say most of them are still finding their feet. And given how everyone wants to make a quick killing in the industry, why would anyone spend more time learning design when a client is looking for creative services for as low as 10k? 2) Another thing one should consider is the starting-end point. It is more likely for someone, who started out as a graphic designer and ended as a web designer (converting to HTML) will always have a more appealing layout than someone who started with HTML/coding and then moves to a graphic program like Photoshop. 3) One man's meat, you know the rest. Be prepared (If it still happens) for people to dig into your portfolio, website, and come back with mud slings and evil grins. ![]() |
Abt time someone posted this.however, omnipotens has summed it up. I learnt this the hard way early during my uni days. now i don't hit a keystroke until we're in agreement and paid.I guess that is what happens when clients need the services of a profession that is yet to be respected |
@justkunmi Just read your posts. I give up. The flaws are too hard to ignore after the Bourne Hype has left my system. So if i close one eye, it's a good movie. @Ex Inferis Don't even think about it. It's going to be a MegaBomb Flop. The trailer just killed whatever hopes i had for the movie's success. Any true dragonball fan doesn't have to even watch the movie to know this. So sad. How can PICOLLO be white? HOW |
1 - first off, i think the pink/red color background is too tense. If you could use a much lighter shade i'm sure it would be better 2 - You should always use a preloader so that your entire flash movie is preloaded in your visitor's system before it plays. 3 - The "Jaggedy" animated text gets distracting after a while. I suggest something more calming. 4 - If you have a better picture, use it. I don't think the one you have there right now properly conveys you as a musical artist (I first thought of you as painter until i read your content). The splashy background might also be another reason for this misconception. Remember: There's never a second chance to create a first impression. more grease to your elbows. |
The minute i saw this, i wondered if i was living in a parallel universe - what have I been using to go to work everyday when something like this The least they could have done is to add some watermark text to the image stating "concept image" or something like that. , or has anyone seen it? let me not assume ![]() |
A president who knows how to use the internet to his advantage in a way that manages to impress me. I hope some people (who don't know by now), the importance of having not only a website but one that achieves goals and results. Another example of such is Queen Rania's Video Blog Campaign |
Nice - The header text could be white though. |
