Touchdown!!! grin

I played Megaman recently just to refresh it's stupendous difficulty in my mind cheesy

I can't even think of any really difficult console (retail) game in the last decade. The only games i might find challenging nowadays are DLC, i.e Super Meat Boy.

Come on, Ninja Gaiden is a "two day" game.
+1. And I Approve this messagegrin

After seeing it on my friend's SNES back then, a decade or so later I picked up the ROM. Damn! Good times

Super Meat Boy? I don't know what those guy where thinking but it was spot on! Currently playing Outlands.

Hmmm, perhaps 'www' then? coz its what I'm using for my signature image and every post I need to add an image.
But he's got the tags though, so whichever works for him.
WebmastersRe: How Do I Add Pictures On Nairaland Posts?! by WebMonk(m): 11:46am On Jul 10, 2011
you need to use SMF's image tag:

(img)http://htttp://full-url-of-the-image(/img) <<--------------replace '()' with '[]' to see it in action.

and voila! done.
WebmastersRe: Lack Of Jobs Or Lack Of Quality Graduates For The Jobs by WebMonk(m): 9:26am On Jul 09, 2011
Chances are the good ones are too few and spread apart that for every competent web professional a client might meet, he/she is likely to meet a dozen quaks (DIY bookers, Frontpagers, etc). Fastforward some useless/redundant/non-objective cheap projects later, the client STILL has a need want for it, but most likely has a skewed expectation/perception of what a true professional should charge.  Let's say a client was used to crappy designs for some cheap price. The day he meets a professional who charges what the client might call 'heaven and earth', he will either bite or bail. A client once said 'nobody charges that high in this day and age'. I'm sure he was referring to how easy it was to pickup a DIY book, and certainly not how to deliver a project with specs from beginning to end.

There are jobs out there. its just they mostly pay so low even qualified graduates shouldn't touch it with a 10 meter pole.

LiteratureRe: Do Nigerians Read/Buy Comic Books? by WebMonk(m): 3:28pm On Jun 09, 2011
@OP. I say go for it. Yes, access is an issue, but I believe if well done people will make time for reading nigerian comics. Now we've got a fairly decent internet penetration and a more savvy audience to leverage on. Things are different, and I believe ripe for nigerian comics to go mainstream (with effort)

I've done some searching and have seen some really serious attempts at nigerian comics. You just need to make sure you'll see it to the end.

WebmastersRe: The Lonley,stingy,greedy Web Developer/programmer by WebMonk(m): 4:41pm On Nov 29, 2010
@OP

Its typical human nature. Quality granted, if I can do it all, I chop alone. Sadly, like Yawatide has guessed, I did guess along the (average) price moving around is 25k. I've even seen someone do a promo for branding facebook pages for the same amount!!!

For large projects, what is on paper is never the case. Chances are the peeps awarding the project have their "cut" inside that as well. One might have to pursue numerous "departments" with "moolah" to push your cheque out.

And lastly, the type of clients that know true quality (how you define this is also debatable) are so few and too far apart for most developers/designers to care. do now, chop, clean mouth, go.

As for collabs, they are there, albeit it a few, but pie has to be big enough for both parties

WebmastersRe: Domain Name, Web Hosting And Design For N6,500 ? In Nigeria? by WebMonk(m): 4:24pm On Nov 09, 2010
Can't be helped man. Or rather, we'll just have to wait till clients know better and truly wise up.

Was in a similar situation. Had a meeting with the coy (I was referred to), and after the usual Q & A and seeing my past works, they started asking for demo, as there were other 'designers' who would be designing something to present. Great.

I calmly told them that I don't do demos, as nothing designed on the spot would beat a design that is well informed, and that I would simply send them my proposal, highlighting the benefits of choosing me (for which i added a CMS and some value adding modules for their biz)

Long and short, I haven't heard from them, and I don't expect to, as given how unregulated and unrecognized our industry is, someone will bid so low and bring out something instantly gratifying they will almost rather work with that and 'spread the wealth'. Sadly, that never works long term. Why they would rather go through the same process again a few months later (we need a new website, the last one doesn't cut it), is beyond me. The last designer, who holds access control to the hosting server that has their emails, is unreachable (wonder what that tells me?)

Just one of those things.
WebmastersRe: Of What Use Is A Website To A Hair Dresser by WebMonk(m): 6:18pm On Nov 01, 2010
@Poster:
Just in case you're not reading between the lines, here's what (I think) they're saying.
Here you are with a client THAT's WILLING TO PAY, even though you offered him for FREE (?), and is so forward thinking he wants a website people can access from their homes for home service (!!!!), and EVEN GAVE YOU INTERNET(!!!!!!). IN NAIJA!!!!!! What do you think he is seeing?

and now, the only thing that's required of you is to brainstorm on transitioning this idea into a profitable reality.

Think it or not, these are the real projects move you forward as a professional, not those that want you to whip out a new social networking site. Imagine how that guy will respect you if you pull it off (and connections referrals he can give you ). you would have CONVINCED one nigerian of the very tangible benefits of having a website. Geez! that's where the hard work is!!

And with that, 2 tips:

1) have a mobile version in mind (if people access). that way, mobile users can use the site as easily as normal users, I don't think i need to emphasize the number of blackberry users in lagos & abuja alone. heck, almost every babe has one now, and whoever bought it would most likely pay for the internet service. Are you still with me?

2) Read my ebook on handling web projects with clients . You owe it to this golden client, and to yourself as a challenge.

WebmastersRe: Apart From Joomla: What Other Cms Do You Work With: ? by WebMonk(m): 9:24pm On Oct 22, 2010
Back in the day, I used exponent-cms, particularly because its templating structure gave me freedom to express myself (CSS styling). However, security was a concern at the time, as a vulnerability that took too long to patch forced me to look elsewhere. In the end, I chose WordPress (flexible structure and small file size). More importantly, the reasons why we choose any of these is what I want to address.

As per Open Source and Personal CMS

Open Source CMS is good, and getting increasingly better. However, in response to their popularity, they grow into a[b] bigger, broader, more complex platform[/b]. Wordpress, Joomla and the rest now have extensions ranging from eCommerce to forums to event planners and so on. As with anything increasingly more complex, there's an associated level of overhead that goes along with managing it. Whether the project's requirements warrant such is another discussion altogether. While this "One size fits all" type of CMS is targeted at the kind of people (front end users) who aren't concerned with a technical know how, there will always be projects that need something 'tailored' to spec. This is where personal CMS (and, of course, their developers/designers) come in.

Sometimes having your own CMS can lead to a solution that is[b] better suited to your needs, is faster, much more lightweight (specific), easily extensible, and much faster to deploy[/b]. Of course, I say this in line with the specifications for the project. You'll know something is amiss if you find a site has joomla installed ONLY to power a contact form.

And lastly, there are still a lot of people who want a site they can simply manage on their own effectively, in the light of the fact that a certain level of tech savvy is required to navigate certain Open Source CMS. Having something really simple and flexible beyond just 'skinning' could go the extra mile in showing you understand their needs as a professional. That's what inspired me to create kolejo, because a website isn't should be easy to use

PS: my opinion on the matter. no hating
