The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, on Wednesday, clarified its position on the death of one of its resident officer who allegedly died of COVID-19 at Kano Orientation camp.
Vanguard had reporter earlier that the officer, whose name was withheld, was posted to the permanent orientation camp in Kano a few days before he developed COVID-19 symptoms and died on Tuesday.
The deceased officer reportedly went to the Kano camp where he represented Shuaibu Ibrahim, the director-general of the NYSC.
However, NYSC’s Director General, Shuiabu Ibrahim in a programme by Channels TV monitored by Vanguard, explained that all prospective corps members for the three-week course underwent the COVID-19 test, conducted by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), as a prerequisite condition for admission into any of the 37 camps nationwide.
The DG denied that the deceased officer died at the Permanent Orientation Camp at Kano while urging members of the public to debunk the rumour doing the round.
“First and foremost, it’s not true that the resident officer died in camp. In line with the COVID-19 guildeline, all prospective corps members and camp officials that were invited for the orientation exercise were tested. It’s mandatory that all must be tested, and only those negative are allowed to the camp while those positive are taken away by the NCDC for treatment and that’s what happened.
“The staff concerned just like other prospective corps members and camp officials underwent test and when is positive, he’s taken away by the NCDC staff to the Kano State Isolation Centre. So, that’s where he (deceased officer) passed on,” he said.

Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church in Lagos , Pastor Tunde Bakare , says his ambition to become the President of Nigeria is a lifelong dream .
Bakare , who didn’ t specify whether he would be running for president in the 2023 elections, said he believed he still has a quota to contribute to the development of the nation .
The cleric spoke on Tuesday night in an Instagram Live Chat with popular journalist , Dele Momodu , monitored by
The PUNCH .
Bakare was the running mate to Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd .) in the 2011 presidential election . The duo , which ran under the banner of the Congress for Progressive Change , lost to former President Goodluck Jonathan and his deputy , Namadi Sambo of the Peoples Democratic Party .
Buhari later ran again and won in 2015 with Yemi Osinbajo under the banner of the All Progressives Congress. Change was the mantra of the ruling party in 2015 .
But Bakare said, “ Rather than getting the change , it appears that we have been shortchanged . ”
The cleric said he has not given up on his presidential ambition but added that his was not an inordinate ambition .
He said, “ In an ideal situation , every Nigerian is entitled to his or her dream and we must find a way of liberating that office that any Nigerian who desires to be in the office or to be the president of Nigeria should be at liberty to do so.
“ I express my own desire but it is not any inordinate ambition and it is not that I must kill and maim in order to get there . I have something to offer my country , God giving me the opportunity and the people saying so, I desire to still contribute my meaningful quota to the development of my nation . It is a dream I have had as a little boy and it has never left me but I am not pushing neither am I forcing myself on people .
“ Remember something about the presidency in Nigeria, those who pursue it too hard hardly get it , those who put everything into it hardly get it and those who are qualified like MKO , he won the election , they didn’ t let him get it . Chief Obafemi Awolowo has been described as the best president Nigeria never had .
“ I will tell you it was the time Muhammadu Buhari stood publicly and said I will no longer offer myself for public service ; it was after that that he got it . So, there is no inordinate ambition here that it must happen at all cost . If God gives me the opportunity , I will serve my nation but may the best candidate win in the net election and may God bring the best and brightest candidate emerge and steer the ship of our nation .”
Bakare also said he did not sign any agreement with Buhari, indicating that the latter would hand over power to him in 2023 .
“ As a servant of God the Most High , President Buhari and I have never discussed it not once . I say that publicly today and if anybody has anything to the contrary, he can bring it to the open . We have never said it . He had never said to me , I confide in you , you are the man I would , no, not once , I express my own desire.
“ And if you care to know, this is not the first time I said it . I said it in Lisabi Grammar School in 1973 . Ask my classmates , they will tell you I said one day , I will be the president of Nigeria .
“ In 1984 , I mentioned it to Pastor Adeboye , he is still alive . Before I proposed to my wife in 1982 , I said it to her that one day I will be the president of Nigeria . It was something that I had seen as a little boy that I have something to offer my country and this country can be better than this and I will do my best to give it the best shot but it is not driven by inordinate ambition , ” he added .
The cleric further said himself and Governor Nasir El - Rufai of Kaduna State have not sat down to sign a pact to run a joint ticket in the 2023 presidential election .
Bakare said the next president of Nigeria could come from the South -East geopolitical zone but the candidate must join a major political party because politics is about numbers.

The Inspector -General of Police , Mohammed Adamu , was one of the top government officials who welcomed the President , Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd) , back to Abuja on Tuesday .
There has been anxiety over Adamu ’s continued presence in office after he attained 35 years in service on Monday .
On Tuesday , reports made the rounds that he had handed over to the most senior Deputy Inspector- General of Police .
But a competent police source who does not want his name in print said there was no truth in the reports .
Like on Monday however, the IGP was said to have still reported for work at the Loius Edet House headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja .
After attending to his official duties , Adamu joined other top government officials at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport , Abuja to welcome the President .
Buhari had last Friday left Abuja for his hometown , Daura , Katsina State , for what the Presidency described as a four - day official visit.
On Saturday , he revalidated his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Daura .
He was joined by 10 state governors elected on the platform of the party ; the President of the Senate , Ahmad Lawan ; and a former President of the Senate , Ken Nnamani .
Apart from Adamu, the Chief of Staff to the President , Prof Ibrahim Gambari ; and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory , Mohammed Bello , were among government officials who received the President at the airport .
The police source said, “ There is no truth in the reports that IGP Adamu has handed over to anybody .
“ He worked throughout today ( Tuesday ) in his office and proceeded to the airport to receive Mr President in the evening .
“ If he had handed over , it just makes sense that the person he handed over to would have been the one to receive the President at the airport . ”
The Force Public Relations Officer , Frank Mba, a Commissioner of Police , did not take his call on Tuesday evening when our correspondent made attempts to get his reaction .
The Presidency too has yet to issue a statement on Adamu ’s fate.

The outgoing Inspector -General of Police , Mohammed Adamu , has reportedly handed over to Deputy Inspector General of Police , Operations, DIG Sanusi Lemu, as the most senior police officer .
Adamu who attained the statutory retirement age on Monday was said to have asked Lemu to oversee the administration of the Nigeria Police Force pending the appointment of a new IG by the President .
The IG came to the office briefly earlier today to transfer the authority to Lemu .
A source said, “ The IG has not officially handed over power to DIG Lemu ; he merely asked him to take over as the most senior DIG pending directives from the Presidential Villa. Adamu is still nursing the hope that he may get tenure extension. ”
Lemu was appointed the DIG Operations last November following the retirement of DIG Abdulmajid Ali.
He holds a BA ( Ed ) in Political Science and has attended several professional courses including : Intermediate Command Course, Senior Command Course, Peacekeeping Training Course.
He is a member of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies , Kuru, Jos .
The Niger State -born cop has held many Command positions including the Commissioner of Police , Kaduna and Bauchi Police Commands .
Until his promotion as DIG , he was the Assistant Inspector- General of Police in- charge of Zonal Headquarters ( Zone -12 ) , Bauchi .

The Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike has criticised a former Chief of Army Staff,
Yusuf Tukur Buratai, accusing him of ‘Bias’ over his refusal to allow the state have its own security outfit.
Wike , in a statement sent to POLITICS NIGERIA, cited the arrest and detention of recruits of the Rivers State Neighbourhood Watch Safety Corps who were undergoing training at the National Youth Service Corp orientation camp at Norwan in Rivers State by the Nigerian Army on the directive of the then Chief of Army Staff.
“So many States were setting up their own security outfit, the Chief of Army Staff, (General Buratai) allowed it. He never for one day said look we cannot allow this. But, he allowed it. When Rivers State by law set Neighbourhood Watch to give intelligence to security agencies, the former Chief of Staff, General Buratia came into politics. Even when we wrote to the Army, we wrote to the Police. The police and Department of States Services were the one training the people.”
He urged the new Service Chiefs to bear in mind that though they were appointed by the President, their oath of office and oath of allegiance is to obey the Constitution of Nigeria.
The governor described as erroneous President Buhari’s claim that the security situation in the country has improved far beyond what the situation was when he assumed office in 2015.
“Things have gone very bad. Everybody knows that insecurity has reached the level where everybody was saying change the service chiefs. If it was good, nobody will call for their sack. Even in his party, the APC said the insecurity has gotten to a level we cannot bear again.”
Governor Wike pointed out that despite the withdrawal of $1 Billion, estimated to be above N450 Billion from the Excess Crude Account to procure armament to fight the insurgents, security has continued to deteriorate.

The Presidency on Monday said no date has been fixed for the appointment of a new Inspector -General of Police .

The incumbent IGP , Mohammed Adamu , was expected to leave office on Monday , having attained the statutory retirement age .

However, Adamu was in office till past 6 pm on Monday and attended to a large number of visitors .

Findings indicate that he did not hand over to any senior officer as expected.
The PUNCH reports that the President was supposed to convene a meeting of the Police Council which has the mandate to appoint a new IG.

Findings , however, indicate that the council which comprised the President , state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission , merely adopts whomever is appointed as IGP by the President , contrary to its prescribed roles .

Speaking on Channels television ’s Sunrise Daily, Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu said he was not aware of the imminent announcement of a new police chief .

He stated , “ The President returns to Abuja ( from Katsina) on Tuesday . He should be on his desk by Wednesday . I don ’t know when he will do this . One thing I can assure you is that in places sensitive like that, there is no vacuum that will subsist, so therefore , the system will take care of itself . ”

Shehu also stressed that the appointment of the next IGP will not be based on ethnic considerations.

“ The President will rather have an Inspector -General of Police who will make you and I safer , protect life and property than one who is more pronounced by his tribal marks ,” he noted.
Shehu said it is impracticable for top security appointments to be made based on factors such as ethnicity or regions .

The spokesman added that the appointment will be based on who can best help to protect lives and property across the country .

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he did not leave ‘weak ’ successors in office when he left Aso Rock in 2007 .
He stated this on Sunday during a virtual interview with academic and historian , Toyin Falola , monitored by
The PUNCH .
The ex -president was reacting to accusations by critics that he installed the late Umaru Yar ’adua and Goodluck Jonathan as president and vice -president respectively after his eight -year rule.
Obasanjo was Nigeria’ s president between 1999 and 2007 under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party. He handed over power to Yar ’adua , a two -term governor of Katsina State , who died in office as president , three years after he was elected in 2007 .
Upon Yar’ adua ’s demise in May 2010 , Jonathan, who was then his deputy , was sworn in as president in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria .
The PUNCH had reported that Jonathan later won the 2011 presidential election and returned to office but handed over to the incumbent President , Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd .) , in 2015 after he ( Jonathan) lost his re - election .
Many Nigerians have since criticised Obasanjo for bringing the late Yar ’adua into office despite knowing his medical history . Obasanjo has also been censured for bringing Jonathan, whom some critics described as ‘ weak’ , into Aso Villa .
But speaking on Sunday , Obasanjo said he distinguishes between objective and mischievous criticisms but discards negative criticisms .
The former president said he did his homework very well to crosscheck Yar ’adua ’ s medical condition before he ran for president .
He described as “ absolutely nonsense , total nonsense” , claims that he installed Jonathan and Yar’ adua in power to weaken Nigeria’ s democracy . “ How should somebody in the like of me deliberately do something to weaken the country that I fought for? The country of my birth , the country that I want to be great ?” the ex -president asked .
When asked whether he was aware that the late Yar ’ adua was sick before he supported his candidacy , Obasanjo said, “ Let me tell you the story of Umaru Yar ’ adua. I knew he was ill and before I put him forward , I asked for his medical report which he sent to me and I sent it to one of the best doctors of our time and a good friend of mine who died only last year – Professor Akinkugbe .
“ I said look at it because it is confidential and he said to me that from this report, this man has had a kidney transplant and it is successful, he is no longer under dialysis . And if you have a kidney transplant and it is successful, it is as good as if you didn’ t have a kidney transplant at all . I accepted that and Umaru Yar ’ adua contested within the party and he contested within the country and came up .
“ In the process of the campaign , I remember that he had to go for a medical checkup abroad and he was not around for a campaign here in Abeokuta . I called him because the rumour was that he had died. I called him on my telephone and put it on speaker. I said , ‘ Umaru , are you dead or alive?’ and he said, ‘I am not dead , I am alive’ .
“ Within a couple of days , he came back and reported that he was checked up and he was well . That was the position of Umaru Yar ’adua and if anybody in his right sense will think that what I have done in that position was not right , I leave him in the hands of God. ”
Obasanjo further said the PDP needed a running mate for Yar ’ adua during the 2007 presidential campaign . He said the party agreed to produce a vice -president from the South -South geopolitical zone , noting that former Rivers State Governor , Peter Odili , was a stronger choice than his then Bayelsa State counterpart , Goodluck Jonathan, but Odili had a case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission .
“ Now , we needed a running mate for Yar ’adua . There were two possibilities – the first possibility was Peter Odili . Peter Odili was a much stronger personality than Goodluck Jonathan but Peter Odili had an EFCC issue which made him to be dropped and once he was dropped , the next man was Goodluck Jonathan and Goodluck Jonathan had all going for him . He was not a strong character as Peter Odili , I will admit that, but he was not a pushover ; he had been a deputy governor , he had been a governor and his state was doing fairly well .
“ I don’ t know what else anybody will say because the deputy president had to come from the South and we had agreed that it would come from the South -South , ” the former military ruler said.
