Politics / Bazia Added No Value To Wike’s Cabinet – Rivers by Weneda(m): 8:30am On Dec 28, 2020
Dennis Naku , Port Harcourt
THE Rivers State Government said on Sunday that the appointment of a former commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Dr . John Bazia , did not add value to Governor Nyesom Wike’ s cabinet.
The state Commissioner for Information and Communications , Paulinus Nsirim, stated this in a statement replying comments credited to Bazia against Wike published in Sunday Punch .
Bazia had in the interview accused the governor of monopolising contracts and making his commissioners ’ redundant as well as shouting them down during state executive council meetings.
But Nsirm said Bazia ought to have been grateful to Wike , having been without a job for eight eights ( 2007 to 2015 ) after he failed to return to the State House of Assembly due to his alleged frosty relationship with the then Speaker, Rotimi Amaechi , even as he said Bazia ’ s appointment did not improve the fortunes of the PDP in the state .
The statement read in part , “ Governor Wike rehabilitated John Bazia , gave him another chance in the PDP house in 2015 , by appointing him as commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, even after his ineptitude as head of the presidential campaign in his local government .
“ His ( Bazia ’s ) tenure as commissioner was also largely uneventful , uninspiring and neither added any meaningful value to the cabinet nor improved the fortunes of the PDP in any remarkable way .
“ So, when it was time to invite him a third time , Governor Wike wisely followed the advice of this famous quote by writer and philosopher , C . JoyBell ; ‘ Don’t let a thief into your house three times . The first time was enough. The second time was a chance . The third time means you ’re stupid .”
Nsirim said the governor ’s accusation that Bazia collected 80 per cent of the “ kolanut ” offered to traditional rulers during a presidential campaign in 2015 was true , saying the former commissioner struggle in vain to deny it .
Nsirim continued , “ Indeed the debtor character of John Bazia was revealed and the records set straight by the very man he himself confessed of collecting a loan from , Mr. Lesi Maol , a Rivers oil magnate and Managing Director , Giolee Global Resources ,” said.
Nsirim further said it was only when a counter- threat to arrest Bazia that Wike got wind of it and “ The Rivers governor benevolently paid off the loan to avoid any further embarrassment to the state government . ”

I don't feel real or human, I feel like a thing people use for their entertainment. I hate society, I wish I was dead honestly

Politics / Kanu Sounds Tough, Warns South-east Govs Over IPOB Vigilantes by Weneda(m): 6:53am On Dec 28, 2020
Tony Okafor , Awka
THE Indigenous People of Biafra on Sunday warned South - East governors not to work against its newly launched security outfit ; the Eastern Security Network.
It accused the governors of a motive to incite the army and others against ESN .
The group in a statement by IPOB ’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, warned the governors to desist from such act or be prepared to face catastrophic consequences resulting therefrom .
The secessionist group also warned local vigilantes in the zone set up by state governors not to allow themselves to be used to carry out what it called evil agenda or have themselves to blame .
It said both the governors and community leaders would be held responsible for any form of attack on any of its security personnel .
IPOB advised the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to stop dissipating energy towards stopping ESN , but rather channel their strength against Boko Haram, bandits and terrorists rampaging the North .
The pro- Biafran group maintained that ESN was not a Biafran Army but a vigilante group set up to defend the people of the old Eastern region against terrorists and criminals responsible for the growing insecurity in the region .
The statement partly read, “ The game plan is to orchestrate crisis between the vigilante groups and ESN to pave the way for Nigeria soldiers to attack ESN personnel .
“ We , therefore , wish to warn all local vigilantes in every state of Biafra who have been or may be contacted or are being recruited by the masterminds of this evil agenda through the traditional rulers and President General of any community or town in Biafraland to attack ESN operatives to have a rethink . Embarking on such unholy mission is suicidal.
“ Anyone , vigilante group , community , traditional ruler or President General, political elite or anybody under any guise who will connive with the enemy to expose or attack ESN in their locality will live in eternal regret of such satanic mission . It ’s not a threat but a promise .
“ We want to make it clear that leaders of any community in Biafra land where any ESN personnel is attacked will pay dearly for such attack . ”
The statement added , “ We specifically warn Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State not to push us any further against the wall. He cannot sacrifice Biafran freedom on the altar of his imaginary presidential ambition . Umahi must retrace his steps now and not test our resolve to protect our land .”
When contacted , the Anambra State Commissioner of Police , John Abang , said he would not want to speak on the matter.

Politics / ASUU Strikes Aiding Boko Haram’s Goal, Says PGF DG by Weneda(m): 11:13pm On Dec 27, 2020
The Director -General of the Progressives Governors Forum, Dr . Salihu Lukman, has described the seemingly unending power tussle between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities , as the greatest disservice to Nigeria’ s public education system .
Lukman noted that there was enough blame to go around on both sides if the blame game was to be relied upon .
He , however , said , amidst the accusations , counter-accusations and the destructively long strikes, the nation ’ s public education system and our teeming youths have been the worst for it .
This was contained in a statement titled , “ ASUU and Indeterminate Power Struggle – The Boko Haram Logic ,” which he signed and made public in Abuja , on Sunday .
Lukman said, “ Many respected Nigerian academics have publicly celebrated the point that ASUU has never lost any struggle against the Nigerian government , whether military or civilian . These are being said without any remorse or acknowledgment of the damage ASUU strikes has done to the Nigerian education system .
“ That we are even thinking that closure of universities and our schools can produce any form of victory with reference to any form of outcome demonstrate our nasty state of mind , which brings us closer to the Hobbesian reality that civilisation would have long resolved.
“ How can anyone with a child whose dream and aspiration should include being educated , celebrate in any form the closure of schools ? What difference is such logic from the Boko Haram objective of abolishing western education?
“ It is very sad that it is common knowledge now that in the last twenty -one years, ASUU was on strike for a record period of more than four years . Worse still is the fact that we have people who claimed to be public intellectuals that present such a reprehensible scorecard and by any standard a scandalous credential as achievement is sickening .
“ At this rate , we may as well accept that Boko Haram terrorists are also public intellectuals . In any event, who is a public intellectual ? Aren ’t Boko Haram terrorists engaged in critical thinking , research , and reflections ? If their mission is to abolish western education, how farther away from that mission is the activity of any group that causes the closure of our universities for nine months in one academic calendar ?
“ If our universities are closed for nine months , what does that mean to the remainder of the education system ? Assuming that secondary students are able to pass their exams , will they gain admission into universities ? Where will space come from when existing students have not graduated ?”
He further noted that to make proposals aimed at resolving the dispute based on an assessment of who was right and who was wrong would be unhelpful .
The PGF DG said, “ It is important for everyone to take responsibility. Nobody is right and everyone is wrong. Neither ASUU nor FG is right . Both ASUU and FG are wrong . The best way to demonstrate this is with reference to the agreement that ASUU members are celebrating.”

Politics / Obasanjo: How I Survived Dimka Coup. Olu Bajowa Saved Me by Weneda(m): 10:53pm On Dec 27, 2020
A former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Sunday, narrated how he survived the February 1976 military coup d’etat, involving Lieutenant Colonel Buka Dimka.

Obasanjo said it was General Olu Bajowa (retd.) that indirectly saved him from being killed in the coup.

The former Head of State gave the revelation at the celebration of the 80th birthday of General Bajowa held in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.

He described Bajowa, a former Commandant, Command and Staff College, Jaji, as a respectful and cultured man.

During the ceremony, the former President told the audience a story of how he was indirectly saved from being killed during the coup.

Obasanjo said, “I want to say something about Olu – either he knew it or he didn’t know. When Dimka coup came, if Olu had not been what he is, I would have gone with the coup.

“Olu is very respectful. He is very conscious of our culture. He had a child, a boy, and wanted to name the child after me. He had to call me early in the morning, that morning Dimka struck.

“And because Olu said he was coming, I had to wait a little bit. I waited beyond the time I would have gone out. Olu then came, he made the request and I granted the request.

“So, I was a little bit late in going on the route that I normally took to work. And Reinumuje went ahead of me and they thought it was me and they shot his car. They shot his car, Murtala was shot. Indirectly, that is how Olu Bajowa saved my life,”

Describing Bajowa as a performing soldier, Obasanjo revealed that Bajowa performed very well when he (Obasanjo) drafted him to go and lead 11 Battalion during the nation’s civil war.

He emphasised that any job that Bajowa could not do, no one else could do it.

Earlier, the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, had called on owners of local radio stations in the state to dwell more in educating and disseminating information in local languages.

He made the call while inaugurating a new radio station in commemoration of the 80th birthday of General Bajowa (retd.) at Okitipupa. The station is founded by Bajowa.

The governor commended General Bajowa for the role he played towards the development of the Southern Senatorial District of the state.

In his address, Bajowa explained that the aim of establishing the radio station was “to complement the effort of government in reviving and prompting Ikale, Ilaje, Ijaw-Apoi and Ijaw-Arogbo culture, tradition, custom and by extension the Yoruba heritage, which are now becoming abandoned or extinct.

“We also identify ourselves with the government effort to make information an important tool for social development and dissemination of the benefits of democracy at the grassroots level.”

Druise:
I think i am in a lot of trouble.

I live and work with a prominent family in nigeria here.

So it happened this christmas, that the last son of the family came home with his wife and children, from abj.

I primarily enter the family as a cleaner, but cause of how i am, i am soon introduced into the family business, and works in their office, lives with them and was considered by all as one of their son, cause actually i have become one.

I am 22, tall for my age, with a quite slender and masculine frame and some cute face (i don't consider myself handsome, but people strongly treats me like i am)

So, it happened that i went out with my boss junior brothers wife and one of her inlaw, to get somethings in the market, and was just surprised at the drama that ensued.

Before then, she has develop the habit of always looking directly into my eyes while speaking to me, and once i look back, she put on some smile, which to avoid embarrassment, i made a point to always return.

So while in the market, you will think she is my wife, with the way she caresses and talk to me in public, not even minding that her inlaw is around, she became excessively flirtatious, caresses me without caution, and i was dumbfounded, but i overcame the shock, and tried my best to respond, and we became friends.

She is a jovial woman, small in stature and slender, having some aura of mystery around her, must be between 28 and 31.

I do like it if some one openly display a show of affection towards me, and this woman does, even at home it is no longer new that she is quite attracted to me, as she never failed to show it even in her mother inlaw and husbands presence.

I am quite a bold young man, and my presence in the family is well felt, which earns me a good respect by all, hence no one really makes it a big deal that i am this affectionately close to their wife, cause i do return her love (she showed a deep affection towards me, and not wanting to offend her, i do return it, which is the biggest mistake of the year).

It continued like that, that even the younger girls, in the family that are trying to get my attention and we are just getting used to each other, decided to stay clear and regard us instead.

It's so obvious that when she wanted to make her hair for christmas, she specifically asked me to accompany her, although, girls are around that may do that, she categorically stated that she wants me to. While going, i caught her husband throwing a glance at us, expected him to be offended, cause i do sometimes feel maybe they are quarrelling and she wants him to be jealous, but it came as a surprised to me that the husband became so close to me, after noticing how close i am with his wife (before, he only regard me from afar, avoiding a direct communication with me).

I never really mind all these show though, cause i am man enough to stand up to any challenge, incase someone is not pleased, so i played along with her, regarding her as the sister i never had, but i have really fallen in love with her.

But, something is off.

she is trying hard to seduce me, and this a path i no longer wish to thread.

When it comes to women, i am innocent, never having offered anyone s*x, cause i am strangely discreet, i find it very difficult to be turn on just by anything, except the person truly loves me, but not ready for marriage, i have never really been looking for a lover, so i have remained how i am.

this woman turns me on perfectly, cause she isn't ordinary (i likes anything extra-ordinary) and i am easily turned on by it.

But this is a forbidden fruit, which i can never taste of.

I have been moody since yesterday, to avoid talking with her, but she stayed up late into the night outside with me cause she literally thought it was a quarrel i had that got me upsets, but she left when she could not have my audience.

Today, she has been trying hard to get my attention, making unnecessary body contacts and trying to establish an eye contact with me, which i have been avoiding.

My problem now is breaking free from this woman, cause i do understand the consequence of what i have gotten myself into.

Any suggestion will be welcome pls?
I read ur story and this foriegn movie "A fall from grace"directed by Tyler Perry comes to my mind. My brother don't try it with Delilah

Politics / Rivers State Government Takes Possession Of Kidney Island by Weneda(m): 9:04pm On Dec 24, 2020
The Rivers State Government has secured the enforcement of her interest in the acquisition of 45 percent equity stake in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 11 and Kidney Island in Port Harcourt.

Accordingly, Kidney Island, which was once used as Shell Petroleum Development Company operational base in Port Harcourt, now belongs to the Rivers State Government pursuant to a certificate of purchase registered in the Lands Registry as No. 6 at page 6 in Vol. 46, Port Harcourt.

The certificate of purchase was issued by the order of the High Court of Rivers State on July 23, 2019 and September 25, 2019 following the purchase of the facility.

It will be recalled that the Supreme Court had on November 2020 reaffirmed Rivers State Government acquisition of SPDC interest in OML 11 and Kidney Island when it dismissed the oil firm suit which sought to set aside the judgment made against it in 2019 in favour of Ejama-Ebubu community.

The Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Zaccheus Adangor, SAN made this known on Wednesday while addressing journalists after sealing off Kidney Island in execution of the judgement of Rivers State High Court.

"You will recalled that sometime in 2017, the people of Ejama-Ebubu secured judgement against SPDC and its subsidiaries in the sum of N57.7Billion Naira for the damages done to their environment arising from the oil spill from the Trans-Niger pipeline.

"After that judgement, Shell refused to pay the judgement sum and thereafter proceeded to levy execution by attaching the moveable properties of SPDC. But those were found to be grossly insufficient to settle the judgement sum.

"Subsequently, they (Ejama-Ebubu community) approached the court to seek the leave of the court to attach the immovable properties of SPDC and the court granted them that order. Following the grant of that order, there was a court order for sell of some of the properties of SPDC including Kidney Island and the acquisition of Shell interest in OML 11."

Professor Adangor said after the court order, a public auction was held by the officers of the Rivers State Judiciary and the State Government bided successfully for the purchase of Kidney Island and Shell interest in OML 11.

"So we are here to execute the judgement of the High Court of Rivers State and secure the enforcement of the interest acquired by the Rivers State Government."

The Attorney General stated that the Rivers State Government successfully executed the enforcement as Shell in all fairness did not resist the enforcement.

"It was lawfully purchased through public auction ordered by the court pursuant to a court judgement, hence everything went in accordance with the due process of the law.

"The Rivers State Government successfully executed the enforcement and in fairness to Shell, there was no resistance during the exercise."

"I was on ground to ensure that everything was done smoothly and in accordance with the law."

Also speaking, a representative of the office of the Deputy Sheriff, High Court, Port Harcourt, Mr. Livinus Akere said the exercise was to take vacant possession of Kidney Island auctioned on the 13 August, 2019 and OML 11 in Ejama Community of Eleme Local Government Area.

Recall that in September 2019, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike had announced the acquisition of SPDC 45% interest in OML 11 oilfields and Kidney Island in the State.

The governor following a court order to auction SPDC assets in the suit against Ejama-Ebubu community, had directed the Rivers State Ministry of Finance Incorporated to make a bid of USD 150,000,0900.00 supported by a Bank Guarantee and cash payment to the Deputy Sheriff in the sum of N1 billion, the later payable to the Judgement Creditors while the former is escrowed.

Politics / Wike Restates Need To Establish Enduring Reward System For War Veterans by Weneda(m): 10:01am On Dec 19, 2020
*launches emblem with 20 million Naira

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has restated the need for government to institute an enduring reward system for war veterans to justify the ultimate sacrifices that they make in keeping Nigeria safe and united.

The governor said officers of the armed forces will be emboldened to continue to put their life at great risk in defence of the territorial integrity of Nigeria when they know that there is a permanent reward system established to cater for them or their families.

He stated this at the 2021 Emblem Appeal Fund Launching to mark the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration which held in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

The governor explained that most people do not quite appreciate the enormity of the hardship and trauma families go through losing their breadwinners who have volunteered to be part of the security agencies.

Governor Wike, said if not for the solders and other security agencies who put their lives on the line daily to protect the rest of the citizens, perhaps insurgency in some of the country will have been worse.

He stated that one of the reasons why some policemen were targeted and killed during the #EndSARS protest, was merely because they prevent crimes in society.

"Soldiers go to war, many of them come back wounded, many of them die in the battle field. During the civil war, just to keep Nigeria one, people died. So you don't understand what it takes for someone to volunteer and say that I want to be one of those who will protect our territorial integrity.

“Government must find something to put permanently on ground, so that it will give them that assurance that, yes, indeed it's worthy to die for the country."

The governor also assured that his administration will continue to offer members of the State Branch of the Nigerian legion necessary support that will cushion economy hardship on them.

Governor Wike, used the occasion to redeem the sum of One Hundred and Seventy One Million Naira (N171,000,000.00) he pledged to the Nigerian Legion for the scholarship of their children.

He also donated 20 million Naira to launch the emblem and enjoined the 23 Local Government councils in the State to donate One Million Naira each to support the launch.

On his part, the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo said the Emblem Appeal Launching offers another opportunity for well meaning individuals and corporate bodies to support the veterans for their sacrifices and also to boost their morale to elicit optimal performance.

Dr. Danagogo said that the Wike administration had over the years invested generously in promoting the welfare of members of the state chapter of Nigeria legion.

He stated that Governor Wike recently gave N20 million Naira each to widows of the six soldiers and four police officers who were killed by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) militants who hijacked the #EndSARS protest in Oyigbo.

Rivers State Chairman of Nigeria Legion, ACG Justice Chichi noted that Nigeria is still immersed in the fight against Boko Haram, bandits and other forms of insurgency and the security agencies are operationally ready to confront them as a commitment to protecting sovereignty of Nigeria and to ensure safe climate for steady economic growth.

He thanked Governor Wike for the several supports given to the legion to serve as their major benefactor, and appealed to him to fulfil the pledge of fund for the scholarship scheme meant for children of the war veterans.

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has described two former Peoples Democratic Party members, John Bazia and Michael West, who recently decamped to All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, as political neophytes with slippery character.

He said the two men who served as Commissioners in his cabinet during his first tenure, became disgruntled because he did not retain them.

The governor while speaking on a live television programme in Port Harcourt on Friday, said the decision of Bazia and West to decamp to the APC was of no political consequence because they were politically irrelevant.

“What are the qualities of people that defected? The two people, Michael West and John Bazia who knew them in my cabinet? Have you ever heard them speak on behalf of PDP before? Have you ever heard them speak on behalf of our administration? “

He further said: " You knew the position of Chidi Llyod when he was in APC. Ask the former Commissioner of Transport (Michael West), he contested PDP primaries with me and got only three votes, but because of politics of carrying everybody along and the money he spent I decided to accommodate him. He was Commissioner of Transport, ask him his contribution to the administration.”

The governor explained that during his first tenure he almost sacked West as a Commissioner for taking 13 luxurious buses belonging to the State government to Calabar for a spiritual programme and also diverting funds generated by taskforce on transport into his personal accounts.

“I called the Commissioner for Transport and asked him of his whereabouts. He told me he was in Calabar to see his father, the Olumolumba. I was amazed, and said; you took our 13 buses to Calabar without permission. I would have sacked him that day. People prevailed on me to manage him till after the election.

"Taskforce were collecting money and paying into the Commissioner for Transport private accounts. I called in the State Executive Council meeting and ask him; how would you pay state money into your private account? I managed him till the end of my first tenure . You expect me to bring this kind of person to my cabinet ?

The governor said the reasons given by West for his resignation from the PDP was that they didn't allow him to head his ward executive committee of the party.

“So how can we give somebody we know that will be leaving the party party EXCO? So that when he is defecting, he will say has defected with entire EXCO. He thinks he is more smarter than any body? These are neophytes in politics. We all kept eye on them.”

Speaking on former Commissioner of Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, John Bazia, Governor Wike revealed that while serving in the State executive council, Bazia caused him so much embarrassment.

"During the 2015 presidential campaign, the President brought Kola to the Traditional Rulers. You can't believe what happened. The Chairman of Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council called me that the chiefs are waiting for their Kola. I was amazed and said which Kola, you have not received it ? They said no. The then commissioner of Information who was the chairman of the Sub committee of our campaign said they gave the Kola to John Bazia . Do you know what Bazia did ? He took Eighty percent (80%) and brought 20 percent of the Kola to the traditional rulers.

“The then Commissioner of Information got angry and slapped him and called him armed robber. Everybody was angry and compelled him to bring the Kola . What an embarrassment.”

Governor Wike, also narrated how he had to personally intervened and pay off 40,000Euro debt Bazia was owing.

He explained that his administration has done several projects in both Tai and Asari-Toru LGAS where the two decamped Commissioners hail from.

The governor described as laughable the allegation that he was constructing seven flyovers in Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor LGAS. He declared that he will be constructing additional three flyovers in Port Harcourt to ease traffic congestion.

Politics / Wike Signs 2021 Budget by Weneda(m): 9:31am On Dec 11, 2020
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has signed into law the 2021 Appropriation Bill and promised that it will be implemented in providing basic infrastructure for the good of the State.

Signing the 2021 Budget at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Port Harcourt on Thursday, Governor Wike said his administration is working assiduously to sustain the tempo of development that has continued to stand the state out in the federation.

He assured those who have wondered why the on-going projects in their local government areas were not mentioned when he presented the budget to the State Assembly that such projects are already captured as special projects and will be completed.

"So many people have asked why there are no projects in their area. We could not have, in our budget speech, named all the projects. But within the budget, there are many projects and those that cannot be named, we have to put them under special projects.

"Everybody should be rest assured that no local government will be left out as long as the implementation of this budget is concerned. What is important is that we will do all we can to make sure that this Appropriation Law is fully implemented, particularly as regards basic infrastructure that we are supposed to provide for our people."

Governor Wike said infrastructural revolution in the state is already appreciated across party divide particularly with comments from the chairman of Senate Committee On Work, Senator Adamu Aliero.

"Today, when we went for the 26th meeting of National Council on Works. Senator Adamu Aliero said he wants to tell other states to emulate what's going on in Rivers state.

" He said that as they were coming, they were so satisfied with what they have seen and Babatunde Fashola, who is the Minister of Works and Housing, said he does not want to talk about the development in the state so that I will not play politics with it. People are seeing the good works we are doing."

The governor commended members of the State Assembly for the expeditious passage of the bill into law, which indicates their love for the continued development of the state.

"It is not easy to pass these bills into laws in such a short time and I want to commend your efforts. If you're not interested in the development of the state it will not have been possible.

"We have always said that it is not only for the Executive to see that the state moves forward, it is also for the Legislature and Judiciary. We are lucky that our in state that the arms of government are working very closely, and doing their own work.

"People should talk about how Rivers State will move forward. I've told anybody to challenge us, and tell me one local government where there is no state government project. Let us work together and you'll see our state will be a different state."

In presenting the bill for signing, the leader of the House, Hon. Martins Amaewhule said the Assembly gave speedy attention to the bills because they will further make life better for Rivers people when implemented .

Speaker of the house, Right Honourable Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani assured that the Assembly will continue perform its function to complement efforts of the Executive in providing secure state for the people.

Politics / Wike Tells FG To Fund East West Road From Sovereign Wealth Fund by Weneda(m): 6:05pm On Dec 10, 2020
Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has advised the Federal Government to include the East – West road among the critical infrastructural projects being funded from the coffers of the nation’s Sovereign Wealth Fund.

The governor, has also noted that the Federal Government’s directive stopping State governments from funding the construction or rehabilitation of failed federal roads is inimical to the effective development, management and maintenance of road infrastructure across the country.

He made this assertion in his opening address at the 26th meeting of the National Council on Works in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

Governor Wike, said the theme of the meeting: “Infrastructure Development, Job Creation and National Economic Growth” fits to the generally held view that road infrastructure plays a critical role in enabling economic development, poverty reduction and inclusive progress.

Governor Wike pointed out that the East – West road which is too important to the economic prosperity of the South-South region and the nation has been under construction for over 15 years, yet a completion date is still not in sight.

He urged Federal Government to urgently consider funding the East-West Road from the Sovereign Wealth Fund to guarantee its completion by 2022 as being taunted by the Minister of the Niger Delta.

The governor observed that presently the Federal Government appears overwhelmed with the construction and provision of too many road projects across the country. He then suggested that it would have been better for the Federal Government to complete most of the on-going roads before embarking on new ones.

Governor Wike, advised the Federal Government to reconsider its directive stopping State Governments from funding the construction or rehabilitation of failed federal road which if not promptly fixed will upset economic growth in the affected States and challenge the wellbeing of citizens.

“It makes progressive sense as a development strategy therefore for State Governments to reconstruct such federal roads with reputable contractors on behalf of the Federal Government and get refunded after due verification of the price and quality of work done.

“The Federal and State Governments need to consult and collaborate regularly to accelerate the delivery of road infrastructure to advance and realize the hopes and aspirations of our people for development and decent living.”

Governor Wike explained that the State government is presently constructing six flyovers a federal government road to ease the perennial traffic congestions on the problematic intersections of Port Harcourt – Aba expressway.

“Let me therefore appeal to the Federal Government to continue to collaborate with the State Governments on road development by allowing States to fix federal roads with the assurance of a refund.”

The governor stated that his administration has consistently dedicated over 65% of the State budget annually for the construction of new roads or the reconstruction and or maintenance and rehabilitation of existing roads across the State, including federal roads.

“The result is the unprecedented delivery of close to 900 kilometres of roads, bridges and flyovers spread across the length and breadth of the State, including some of the far-flung communities that have now been linked by roads for the first time.”

Minister of Work and Housing, Babatunde Fashola said the covid-19 pandemic brought to the fore the importance of human mobility to the health of any economy with the urban poor appearing to be the worse hit as a result of the lockdown.

According to him, part of measures adopted by the Federal Government to kick-start economy recovery processes was to focus on agriculture including the resumption of construction work in 26 states with its attendant multiple effects on local economy.

Mr Fashola explained that against the former practice of flexible pavement connection module that was cost intensive, but his ministry is ready to unveil the rigid design manual which is cost effective and will guide construction activities in the country.

Chairman of senate committee of works, Senator Adamu Aliero who advocated the setting up of infrastructural bank as an alternative source of funding of federal road projects said it has become practically difficult for the Federal Government to fund the 711 roads captured in the federal budget.

Rivers State Commissioner for works, Elloka Tasie-Amadi said it has become more imperative for present generation to plan for the future and end the perennial road infrastructural deficit expletives today.
