Crime / Victim’s Parents Write Deeper Life School, Demand N100m Compensation by Weneda(m): 6:04am On Jan 02, 2021
Patrick Odey , Uyo
The parents of Don Davies , the 11 -year -old victim of alleged sexual molestation in Uyo campus of the Deeper Life High School in Idoro , Akwa Ibom State , have demanded N 100 m compensation for the torture their son was allegedly subjected to in the school.
The parents, Mr and Mrs Archibong , made the demand in a letter they addressed to the principal of the school, entitled ‘Gross child abuse , palpable molestation , serial bullying , criminal starvation , malicious oppression , and dubious maltreatment of Master Don- Davies Archibong ( 11 years old ) by the Principal and Boarding Master , of Deeper Life Secondary School , Uyo . ’
The letter, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent on Friday , was sent through their solicitors, Eagle- Eyes Network Chambers , and signed by David Okokon, dated December 22 , 2020 .
According to the letter , the school was given 21 days to pay the N 100 m compensation .
It read in part , “ We are solicitors to Mr . and Mrs , Iniobong Archibong , resident in Uyo , Akwa Ibom State and herein after referred to as our client. We have the firm explicit and unequivocal instructions to write to you on the above subject matter.
“ It is indeed provocatively heartbroken , morally suicidal and religiously hypocritical that our client ’s 11 -year - old son was torrentially bombarded with physical and inhuman torture of debilitating dimension with resultant castration of his human person , dignity and childhood innocence .
“ We respectfully demand the payment of N 100 ,000 , 000 within 21 days of the receipt of this letter as compensation to assuage the dehumanising , horrendous torture and indignity our client’s son was subjected to and for his medical checkup and medication .
“ We demand that Deeper Life High School, Idoro , Uyo , publish an unreserved apology to our clients in two national Newspapers; PUNCH , THISDAY, and any other two local newspapers circulated within Akwa Ibom State and its environs.”
Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom State Government has pulled out of the investigation into the alleged sexual molestation of the boy .
The state government in a statement by its Information Commissioner , Mr . Ini Ememobong , on Thursday explained that it withdrew from the matter to allow the police carry on with its investigation .
Ememobong , however, said the government was committed to unraveling the truth and appealed to members of the public to exercise patience while the police carried out a thorough investigation .
He added, “ The state government will upon receipt of the report take necessary actions thereto .”

Science/Technology / FG Launches Mobile App For NIN Verification, SIM Linkage by Weneda(m): 1:21am On Jan 01, 2021
Benjamin Babine, Abuja
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has launched an improved National Identity Number (NIN) slip as well a Mobile App.
This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday signed by the Minister’s Technical Assistant on Information Technology, Dr Femi Adeluyi. This is part of the Federal Government’s policy to improve the process of obtaining NIN and linking it to SIM.
The statement read in part, “the highly anticipated Web Service (MWS) Application, called the NIMC Mobile App, and the improved National Identification Number (NIN) Slip are now available for public use. The App provides a secure channel for all Nigerians and legal residents to easily verify and authenticate their identities on-the-go using smartphones.
“It also enables them to link the NIN to their phone numbers. The development of the App and other tools to support the National Identity Number (NIN) process align with the National Digital Economy Policy for a Digital Nigeria. The App offers a built-in harmonization process that allows for its use across other government services including the NCC, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Federal Road Safety Commission and National Health Insurance Scheme, to mention a few.
“On the other hand, the new improved NIN slip is a pocket friendly and an easy to verify version of the NIN. It can be accessed via a self-service Portal, where people who already have been issued the NIN, can log in, download a PDF of the document in colour (if preferred), print and laminate as desired. The current NIN Slip will remain valid and will be gradually phased-out.
“The App is available on the Google Play Store for Android users and App Store for IOS users. Details on how to download and install the App and download the improved NIN slip are available on the websites and social media platforms of the Ministry and NIMC. Users can also download the improved NIN Slip at https://dashboard.nimc.gov.ng.
According to the statement, Pantami has directed NIMC to respond to enquiries and also provide multimedia guides to make it easy for users to obtain their improved NIN slips and install the App.

Jobs/Vacancies / MSME Survival Fund: FG Warns Applicants Against Fraudulent Websites by Weneda(m): 12:44am On Jan 01, 2021
Ada Wodu , Calabar
The Federal Government has warned applicants for the MSME Survival Fund to beware of fraudulent websites demanding for account details so that applicants can get N 50 ,000 .
This was disclosed in a release made available in Calabar by the Project Delivery Office ( the Coordinating office of the scheme ) under the Federal Ministry of Industry , Trade and Investment, and titled ‘Portal requesting for beneficiaries account details to get N 50 , 000 not known to us’ .
The PDO is coordinated by the SA to the President on MSMEs , Office of the Vice President , Tola Johnson .
The statement said, “ Our attention has been drawn to the activities of fraudsters parading themselves as operators of the Federal Government ’s Survival Fund Scheme .
“ The syndicate operating a fraudulent portal with the link https : / /survivalfund -gov -ng .freefunds .xyz /# 1609249530133( https: / / bit .ly / FG -survival -fund ) are asking unsuspecting members of the public to check their eligibility for the scheme by providing their account details on the portal in order to be paid N 50 , 000 grant under the Survival Fund Scheme .
“ It is pertinent to note that the Project Delivery Office ( the coordinating office of the scheme ) does not operate any such portal and beneficiaries do not require to go to the website to verify their eligibility for the federal governments Survival Fund as indicated on the fraudulent portal .
“ The website requesting beneficiaries account details is therefore a scam . The PDO does not operate any such portal and wishes to advise all Nigerians and beneficiaries of the different tracks of the survival fund to be wary and desist from having dealings with the operators of the site .”
It said the authentic survival fund portal remained www . survivalfund . gov .ng and as customary with the PDO , members of the public would be informed about updates on the scheme whenever it was necessary .
The MSME Survival Fund is part of the N 2. 3 tn stimulus package of the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan and introduced to boost the capacity of MSMEs to remain in business.

Happy New year nairalandlers
Nairaland / General / 2020: Nigeria’s Unremarkable Year by Weneda(m): 12:21am On Jan 01, 2021
FOR many Nigerians , the year 2020, which ended with a whimper on Thursday , was unremarkably bleak . In most respects , especially in health , security , agriculture , education , social life and the economy , 2020 inflicted more misery on the people than the brief moments of reprieve it gave. Nigeria was tormented by the ill wind of insecurity, coronavirus and low oil prices , its economy plunging into its worst recession in 40 years . In summary , 2020 would be remembered for all the brutal afflictions it brought on Nigerians .
Right from the beginning, uncertainty engulfed the atmosphere after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in China manifested furiously across the world . The pandemic hit Nigeria on February 27, the index case entering into an unprepared country from Italy. As of early December 31, Nigeria had recorded 86, 575 positive cases with 1, 278 deaths . These figures tell only half of the story , as the pandemic has exposed the decadence in the health system. Many sick people died from their illnesses . The wealthy , accustomed to overseas medical trips , were restricted to the country by global travel bans . In 2021, the second wave of the pandemic is likely to test the broken health system to the limit . The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Tuesday warned of the dangers ahead , lamenting that Nigerians had compromised the non -pharmaceutical protocols successful in controlling the virulent disease.
The year witnessed untold hardship because of the economic lockdown that accompanied the pandemic. Oil prices nosedived catastrophically from low consumer demand , selling for $12. 22 per barrel in April . This instigated economic turmoil . Massive job losses ensued, with the unemployment rate climbing to 27 .1 per cent from 23. 1 per cent in third quarter 2018. Gloomily , the National Bureau of Statistics said 21.7 million persons were out of job, 13.9 million of them youths. Underemployment hit 28 .6 per cent for a combined 55. 7 per cent jobless rate . Aviation, transport , manufacturing , the hospitality industry and the financial sector were the hardest hit . Unlike elsewhere where governments rolled out a slew of palliatives for the citizens , the inconsequential measures were appropriated , as usual , by the rapacious ruling elite.
The hardship could have been avoided or at least mitigated with the right leadership. With the Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd. ) regime’ s incoherent response , the economy entered a second recession in five years in Q 3. In Q 2, GDP declined by 6 .10 per cent . By Q 3, it slid further by 3. 62 per cent , triggering recession . On the back of reduced production, inflation rose to 14.23 per cent in November, a high of 27 months . Foreign exchange rates sharply increased . The Nigerian currency exchanged for as low as N 500 per dollar in December in the parallel market, despite the billions the Central Bank of Nigeria poured in to defend the national currency . At a stage , it was forced to change its policy by allowing Diaspora remittances to be withdrawn in the currencies they were sent home .
To get by, the regime resorted to a woolly deregulation of imported fuel prices , but it still failed to collect trillions of naira in taxes . The central and state governments owed a backlog of salaries and pensions . Debt , with little to show for it , is going up . As of June 2019, total public debt was $83. 9 billion —14. 6 per cent higher than 2018. It represented 20. 1 per cent of GDP , up from 17. 5 per cent the year before , says the World Bank . Domestic public debt reached $56. 7 billion ; the external public debt component was $27. 2 billion . FDI is receding because of insecurity and the poor ease of doing business environment . A 2020 UNCTAD report said FDI flows to Nigeria totalled to $3. 3 billion in 2019, showing a 48. 5 per cent decrease compared to the previous year’ s $6 .4 billion in 2018.
The infrastructure curse bit harder. Most roads were impassable ; the pandemic slowed down reconstruction . Largely , the seaports became a metaphor for all that is wrong with Nigeria. The Apapa ports , which have a potential to fill the fiscal hole created by low oil prices , were mired in neglect. Nigeria loses N 20 billion on a daily basis there , yet the Buhari regime is clueless on how to turn things around positively . That is a shame.
In addition , Nigeria was racked by a high -level of insecurity . Banditry escalated in the North . Sokoto, Zamfara , Niger , Katsina and Kaduna turned to bloody killing fields . Sectarian bloodshed plagued Kaduna . The peak came on December 11 when bandits/terrorists abducted 344 pupils of the Government Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State, reminiscent of the 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls in Chibok , Borno State, and another 110 other girls in Dapchi , Yobe State, in 2018. Boko Haram is still a force of terror, slaughtering people and security agents in the North - East , including the massacre of 76 rice farmers in Zabarmari , near Maiduguri in November . In the North - Central and South, Fulani herdsmen militia continued to ravage the settled farming communities . Along with the COVID -19 restrictions , this disrupted the season among the smallholder farmers . The South -West suffered highly from the spectre of insecurity, particularly kidnapping .
All this worsened the delicate food security in 2020. The Food and Agricultural Organisation said 16 states – mostly in the North – suffered food insecurity . That is part of the wider extreme poverty levels plaguing Nigeria. In 2018 , Nigeria overtook India as the global capital of extreme poverty with over 80 million of its people living below the $ 1.95 a day threshold . In the latest count , 105 million Nigerians are affected by extreme poverty . A high number of Nigerians now live in penury , waking up with hunger and going to bed hungry . With jobs not forthcoming, more Nigerians are destined to plunge deeper into the extreme poverty hole in 2021.
The indelible event of 2020 was the rage of the youth , expressed in the #EndSARS movement to protest against police brutality . It started in Delta State, but spread like a bushfire nationwide. It gained international currency soon after it commenced . It was peaceful initially , a demonstration of the power of the people when they are organised , until hoodlums infiltrated it by burning , stealing and looting private and public properties . The height was the callous shooting of the protesters at the Lekki Tollgate on the night of October 20 by rampaging soldiers . Although the murderous onslaught ended the occupation of the tollgate , it spurned large -scale nationwide spree of rioting , looting and arson . The hoodlums looted and torched government and private warehouses where palliatives were kept ; attacked prisons to free inmates, burnt police stations and murdered police officers everywhere . In Lagos , the state suffered a N 1 trillion economic loss as assets like public service buses , banks and private businesses went up in smoke .
The public education sector was submerged in a flood of strikes . At the beginning of the national lockdown in March , the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on the action alleging the Federal Government ’ s neglect of tertiary education . The union refused to back down when the government reopened the country in August . Unlike their counterparts studying in private universities , the students in public institutions have lost three semesters of study . This is most dispiriting .
On the political front , the Independent National Electoral Commission conducted governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states. In many of the bye- elections , poor voter turnout was evident, a sign of the militarised nature of polling in Nigeria. The despondency in government took centre as Nigeria marked 60 years of independence from Britain on October 1 with commentators lamenting the sorry state of the country. A cleric , Matthew Kukah , is the latest to draw the ire of the Buhari regime for his Christmas homily : succinctly , he said Buhari , with his incompetence , is “presiding over a country with the prospects of a failed state. ” Kukah is on point . Under Buhari , Nigeria is failing and falling rapidly into anarchy on several fronts.
The year 2020 is one that will become part of the collective memory of the people . A pandemic , massive unemployment , un - measurable poverty and nationwide protests focused on the unrelenting and unremitting pain of police brutality , which ended in torrents of bloodshed marked the low points.
But then , what does 2021 look like ? Unfortunately , there is no hope that it has the potential to be a transformative year , one leading to fundamental change in the fabric of the Nigerian society . The wobbling and pussyfooting will continue until 2023 when Buhari ’ s clueless regime ends . After nearly six years in the saddle , it is obvious Buhari is not in control and his regime lacks the basic ideas and courage to bring about the change Nigeria needs . At a time when the country needs decisive leadership and the President’ s close aides seek the levers of power for its sake , it is really a dire time to be a Nigerian .
The option for a better future lies with the citizens . Therefore , Nigerians should take their destinies in their own hands , making the restructuring of the country along the true ethos of federalism the main issue in the 2023 general elections .

Religion / Bishop Oyedepo On COVID-19: Any System The Church Attacks Will Crash by Weneda(m): 11:57pm On Dec 31, 2020
The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide aka Winners’ Chapel, David Oyedepo, says any system the church attacks will crash, The PUNCH reports.

“When the church goes against a man, his destiny is finished. When the church goes against a system, that system will crash,” he said on Thursday night during a physical crossover service at the church’s headquarters in Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State.

Our correspondent observed that the service commenced at 6pm and ended at 08:40pm on Thursday.

The cleric, who spoke on the message titled, ‘We Are On The Way To Our Promised Land’, said the devil is using the Covid-19 pandemic to come after the church.

According to him, there is no online substitute for physical Christian fellowship, adding that the church has changed level.

Oyedepo said, “Men and brethren, there is nothing in Covid-19. One of the governors was making some statements recently and said, ‘We have only had five cases since the noise began. So, where is Covid-19?’

“One governor was also quoted as saying, ‘I saw people at National Identification Card area, no distancing, no nothing and how much more the church of God where there is order?’.

“There is no Covid-19 in National Population Card Centre. There is no social distancing in the market. There is nowhere to wash hands or wash nose and even the officials who are in charge are also buying things there.

“What I think they don’t know is that the church has changed level. When the church launches an attack against anyone or system, that system crashes. Thank God we have prevailed.”

The PUNCH reports that Oyedepo’s comments come amid the second wave of the pandemic and the call for the closure of religious centres to curb the rising number of Covid infections recorded daily by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

Politics / I Never Called For A Coup —bishop Kukah by Weneda(m): 5:05pm On Dec 29, 2020
Adeniyi Olugbemi , Sokoto
As reactions and counter-reactions continue to trail his Christmas message , Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah , has denied calling for a coup .
Bishop Kukah at a media conference with selected journalists held at St Bakhita Secretariat in Sokoto on Monday night urged Nigerians to get the accurate statement rather than relying on different lies being peddled about in his name.
He emphasised that the message was based on his love for the country and has no political or ulterior motive .
“ I am pained and very sad that my emergency critics never see that many innocent lives are being lost on a daily basis . The loss of lives in the last ten years, even before the advent of this administration , calls for concern .
“ The reactions are a reflection of every citizen that make up Nigeria . It is sad that when you drop something in Nigeria , everybody goes back to their enclave and abandon the larger picture . I am someone who never takes offense to what people say about me .
“ What I said was my opinion based on evidence and what has happened in Nigeria , and if you looked into the records, there is evidence that justifies that statement , and if anyone thinks I am wrong, they should come out with a superior position .
“ It is unfair for a journalist or news medium to report that I called for a coup while expressing my personal view about Nigeria, ” he noted.
To those calling him to drop his priesthood cassock and join the political fray , the outspoken cleric said if he was to join politics , it would have been during the time of late Aminu Kano and not now .
“ I have no plan and will never play partisan politics for any reason. Those who link my message to partisan politics are only playing to the gallery .
“ Take , for instance , brilliant Nigerian youths making comments about Chelsea or Arsenal and have never been to England , does that make them players of such club sides?
“ So, why will someone think because Bishop Kukah is speaking therefore he is a politician? People who make this argument are totally ignorant of elementary politics and ignorant of the role of a Priest.
“ The truth is that a lot of us have not seen a priest saying what I am saying . The truth of the matter is , we are all in politics , but party politics for me , no . I am not a member of any political party and I cannot be . If it comes to voting , I do my right .
“ Whatever I said can please or displease anyone, but that is my own opinion and doesn ’t stop others from saying their own opinion. If you think my motive is wrong, say yours .
“ I have no problem with Muslims , Christians , or any other religion but what I don ’t like is when someone is using a religious issue to play politics , it is wrong .”

Health / Covid-19 Second Wave: Fg, N Assembly Consider Uk, Us Flights’ Ban Next Week by Weneda(m): 10:04am On Dec 29, 2020
Sunday Aborisade , Dayo Ojerinde , Joseph Olaoluwa, Bola Bamigbola and Daud Olatunji
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Smart Adeyemi , on Monday said the National Assembly and the Ministry of Aviation were considering banning flights from the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries with high rates of COVID - 19 .
Adeyemi, who stated this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja , said a decision on the issue would be announced next week .
The Federal Government ’s plan may not be unconnected with pressures on it to stop further spread of coronavirus by banning flights from nations with high rates of the virus .
Recall that the President of the Nigerian Medical Association , Prof Innocent Ujah , had in an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday , said travellers from the UK and the US were worsening COVID - 19 cases in Nigeria.
The NMA president stated , “ Government knows that they ( travellers from the UK and the US) are the ones responsible for increase in cases and the results have shown that and government knows what they should do. ”
Although the Presidential Task Force on COVID -19 had on Thursday imposed fresh requirements on passengers from the UK and South Africa , flights from the two countries were not banned.
The PTF only opened registers for travellers from the two countries because of deadlier strains of coronavirus discovered there .
It , however , said there were no new strains of the virus in Nigeria. But there are fears that travellers who obtained fake COVID -19 results could have brought the new virus into the country .
According to worldometers. info , as of 6 : 55 pm on Monday , the US had recorded 19 ,589 ,952 COVID -19 cases with 341, 332 deaths.
The UK had 2 , 329 ,730 COVID - 19 cases with 71 ,109 deaths. Sweden had 396 ,048 cases with 8 ,279 recorded .
As of Sunday , Nigeria had recorded 84 ,414 cases of the virus with 1 ,254 deaths. But deaths from the virus have increased sharply since the second wave started last month .
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control had said after a drop in the death rate from September to November , it went up to 74 this month.
Adeyemi, in the interview with The PUNCH, said the National Assembly and the Federal Government were concerned about the second wave of COVID - 19 .
He stated that the joint National Assembly Committees on Aviation, the Aviation Ministry and agencies in the sector had been holding regular meetings in the past few days on the matter.
He said the meetings were seriously discussing possible impacts of the proposed ban and other associated issues .
Adeyemi said , “ We are still trying to study the situation so as to know the appropriate steps to take . It is a very sad situation no doubt .
“ The National Assembly and the Aviation Ministry are looking at what really should be done on the call to ban some of the flights coming in, not only from the United Kingdom, but also other countries where the pandemic spreads are more severe .
“ The National Assembly Joint Committee on Aviation is discussing with the Ministry of Aviation and we are looking at what can be done and the right steps to be taken .
“ COVID - 19 is of great concern to everyone and it has been proven that it is real . Nigeria as a country has been able to contain the situation because our people are very conscious of the protocols .
“ The fact that we are experiencing the second wave is a concern . So, the ministry and the National Assembly are considering an outright ban of flights from the pandemic prone countries like the United Kingdom, the United States , the Asian countries , Sweden , among others .
“ We have been studying the situation . We would arrive at a conclusion in the next few days . We are looking at the figures , the rate of infection , the manner of infection and government response.
“ We are studying the implications of the outright ban of flights and whether it would be of any importance to the containment of the virus.
“ We have protocols for visitors arriving in Nigeria which we make sure are being strictly observed. Notwithstanding, in the next few days , we would know what to do .
“ The Senate and the House of Representatives committees on Aviation , the Ministry of Aviation, and all the agencies under the ministry have been engaging in regular meetings over the situation .
“ By next week , we would come up with a definite conclusion on whether there would be an outright ban of flights from the affected countries or the next steps to take . ”
When contacted, the Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Aviation, James Oduadu , said a possible flight ban had to be in tandem with neighbouring countries .
He said, “ If Nigeria is going to do a flight ban , it will be in alliance with our neighbouring countries . I assure you that we are monitoring the situation very closely. The government will not do anything that will affect the health of Nigerians .
“ The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority released a notice to air operators two days ago on some passengers coming in from the United Kingdom and South Africa . Apart from that , I am not aware of any ban on flights. At the moment , I am not aware of any flight ban . The situation may change tomorrow, but currently , I am not aware . ”
An aviation consultant, Mr Olumide Ohunayo , told The PUNCH that he was not in support of any ban on flights as long as the guidelines set by the NCAA were still adhered to .
He said , “ What the government has done is to increase surveillance and strict observation of passengers . The protocols are still the same . That of the United Kingdom and South Africa is 96 hours . You are also required to have a fly permit.
“ Although people are clamouring for a total ban of flights . I am not in support of the total ban. In order to ensure that the airlines comply , an additional fine of $ 3 ,500 has been imposed on airlines on each passenger that violates the protocol . I think these guidelines are good for now and we have to increase surveillance. ”
The spokesman for Dana Air , Mr Kingsley Ezenwa , asked the government to continue to enforce COVID - 19 protocols .
He said, “ The best thing should be the enforcement of protocols. A flight ban could hurt the economy at this point in time . For us, we are still keeping to the protocols 100 per cent . From the entrance of the airport to the final boarding and onto the aircraft , the protocols are still there . Travellers are to use hand sanitisers on the flight . ”
In Lagos State , the Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, on Monday raised the alarm that international travellers in the state were gaining access to fake COVID -19 certificates .
Abayomi, at a briefing in Alausa, said the state government was putting machinery in place to apprehend those doing such things .
The commissioner also raised the alarm that there had been an increase in positive cases from inbound travellers .
“ Positivity for inbound travellers is on the rise as Nigerians in Diaspora return to spend Christmas in Lagos . It has come to our attention that a number of people are patronising individuals that sell fake COVID -19 results.
“ We are currently putting in processes to identify both buyers and sellers and we will not hesitate to prosecute them , ” he said.
Abayomi also said 48 per cent of COVID - 19 patients in the state did not know they were carriers of the virus .
He noted that 16 per cent of the COVID - 19 cases in the state had serious symptoms, while one per cent was in critical condition .
He said, “ 48 per cent of people infected with COVID -19 have very mild symptoms or even asymptomatic . Some of them don ’t even know they ’re carrying the virus.
“ No fewer than 35 per cent of the COVID - 19 patients know that they are not well , but they ’ re not that unwell to warrant them going to the hospital. But the 16 per cent of the cases with severe symptoms, and one per cent with a critical condition are all ideally to be managed under supervision in any one of our isolation facilities .
“ Now there is a problem going on in Lagos , and that problem is that most people who have these symptoms will go and treat themselves for malaria first. By the time we get to know about them , it is usually a week afterward. Cough , fever , shortness of breath , weakness, chest pain , loss of taste , loss of appetite and catarrh are not symptoms of malaria. So yes , if you have a fever , I agree if you have body pain , but if you have a cough, and catarrh and loss of smell or taste , and we’ re in a pandemic that is actively transmitting itself in the community , it is likely to be COVID -19 or less likely to be malaria or typhoid.”
The commissioner added that the state had concluded plans to inaugurate 10 oxygen centres to manage critical cases .
According to him, the centres at Maternal and Child Centre, Eti Osa ; General Hospital , Alimosho and the General Hospital Isolo have been completed , while the centre at Primary Health Centre, Aguda , Surulere will be completed next week .
Seven oxygen centres will be completed in two weeks , according to the commissioner.
The centres are located on the premises of General Hospital , Gbagada; Maternal and Child Centre , Ifako Ijaiye; Primary Healthcare Centre, Ibeju Lekki ; General Hospital , Apapa ; Primary Healthcare Centre, Odi Olowo , Mushin and Maternal and Child Centre, Amuwo Odofin.
In a related development, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Osun State , Bishop Amos Ogunrinde , on Monday said the association had begun talks with the state government , following cancellation of New Year Eve services as parts of efforts to prevent spread of coronavirus in the state .
Ogunrinde , in a chat with The PUNCH, said the last might not have been heard on the issue and urged Christians to be on the lookout for another directive.
The Osun State Government had , in a statement on Sunday signed by the Secretary to the state Government , Prince Wole Oyebamiji, said there would not be crossover services in the state .
It also said , “ The ban on youth carnivals still subsists . Also, all social clubs, hotels , departmental stores , supermarkets , event centres and allied centres are to henceforth operate at half of their capacities and observe COVID - 19 protocols .”
But Osun CAN chairman said the government took the decision to stop crossover services in order to check people .
He stated, “ It is not the wish of the governor to stop crossover services . CAN leadership and government we are holding dialogues on the matter .
“ We believe government will give another instruction regarding the crossover services . We are holding dialogues with them and I believe our governor is a listening governor .”
When contacted, Chairman , Osum Muslim Community, Alhaji Mustafa Olawuyi , said government ’s decision to stop large gatherings was in the interest of the people .
On its part , the Ogun State Government said it would look into the appeal by CAN in the state over the ban on crossover services .
The government said it would hold a meeting with stakeholders to discuss the workability of the request by CAN .
The CAN had written a letter to the state government over the directive suspending crossover services and carnivals for the New Year amid the spike in COVID -19 cases nationwide.
The Special Adviser to the governor on Public Communications , Remmy Hazzan, in an interview with The PUNCH on Monday confirmed that the government had received CAN ’s letter.
He stated , “ The government is looking at it . You will understand that we are on holiday . By the time we are back to the office tomorrow, we will meet with all these stakeholders and we will be able to come up with way and manner in which this can be accommodated . ”

Education / Deeper Life High School Suspends Solomon Ndidi Over Molestation Of Pupil by Weneda(m): 6:30am On Dec 29, 2020
By Harris Emanuel
The management of the Deeper Life High School has suspended the principal of the school in Akwa Ibom State, Solomon Ndidi, over the alleged molestation of one of the pupils.

Distraught mother of the junior student of Deeper Life High School, Idoro near Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, Deborah Okezie had in a Facebook video which went viral on social media platforms alleged that her son was starved and also molested by some senior pupils of the school.

According to her, she went to the school sometimes last month and saw that her son, once a boisterous and healthy-looking chap has completely emaciated.

She stated that after prodding him, he alleged that the principal of the school moved him to the senior pupils’ hostel for bedwetting, disclosing that the senior students seized that opportunity to abuse him by pushing their hands and legs into his anus even as they vowed to kill him if he ever reports the incident to the principal or his mother.

Continuing, she said when she reported her findings to the principal, he pledged to move the 11-year-old boy back to the junior hostel but did not do so.

Apparently disturbed by the Facebook post, the state government immediately swung into action by setting up an investigation team to unravel the alleged abuse.

Governor, Udom Emmanuel, who ordered the state Commissioner for Education, Dr Enobong Mboho, to probe the alleged abuse, pledged that no stone would be left unturned in getting to the root of the alleged dastard act.

Also piqued by the ugly development, the management of the school suspended the principal of the school, Solomon Ndidi, to allow an undeterred probe into the matter, assuring that no one found culpable would be spared.

The statement said, “We want to assure the general public that investigations into the case have commenced and no culprits, whether staff or students, will be spared if found culpable at the end of the exercise. As an interim measure and to underscore the seriousness we attach to higher superintending values, the school principal has been suspended summarily even as further investigations continue.

“We firmly assure the discerning public that the overall outcome of the investigations will be made known and appropriate disciplinary actions will be meted to all culprits in this unfortunate act that admittedly threatens to cast unnecessary aspersions on a unique institution that has been a shining example to all over the years.”

Politics / How Nigeria Can Leverage $500bn Cloud Market To Push National E-id Card by Weneda(m): 3:10am On Dec 29, 2020
By Prince Osuagwu
Nigeria recently kicked off a quest to replace the plastic identity cards it issued to citizens from 2013 with a digital identity.
Although the process of obtaining the identity is froth with several inconsistencies and has elicited criticisms, the digital identity is expected to save the country some foreign exchange, address national security, encourage access to financial services as well as build investors’ confidence in Nigeria’s recessive economy.
The identity will be issued to all Nigerians who have attained the age of 16.
According to Mckinsey, Nigeria is second when compared with six other countries in emerging economies. Digital ID coverage could unlock economic value equivalent to seven percent of GDP in 2030 in the adoption and its usage.
This would in turn positively impact the Gross National Product (GNP) which is the value of what Nigerians earn here and abroad because there is reliable data to drive economic decisions.
Antecedents
However, experts are not losing sight of the failure of the previous national identity card adventure.
After nearly four years of enrolling millions of Nigerians, less than 10 percent of enrolled were actually issued a national ID card. It could happen again, they say.
The transition to digital ID is expected to be concluded by 2022. There are also high expectations that the government is ready to invest massively in enabling technology to drive the project.
In that regard, cloud computing may well be the primary infrastructure that it may need to prioritise.
At the basic, digital identity includes attributes such as a unique identity number, social security number, name, place, and date of birth, citizenship, biometrics, and more, as defined by national law.
The United Nations (UN) and World Bank ID4D initiatives set a goal of providing everyone on the planet with a legal identity by 2030.
So far numerous new national e-ID programmes (including card and mobile-based schemes and unrelated to ID2020) have been launched or initiated.
Examples of such projects are in Algeria, Belgium (mobile ID), Cameroon, Ecuador, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Italy, Japan, Senegal, Thailand, Turkey, Afghanistan, Denmark, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, and the Maldives.
The growing push for digital identities also means that countries are positioning themselves to benefit from investments in cloud computing.
“Building a national identity architecture that does not depend on cloud technology will not service a modernising nation,” said Busola Komolafe, Head, Cloud advisory at Signal Alliance.
Founded in 1996, Signal Alliance has over two decades of gold partnership status with global cloud services provider, Microsoft.
A report by Canalys released in October showed that the worldwide cloud market grew 33 percent this quarter to $36.5 billion.
AWS has 32 percent of the market and generated more revenue than the next three largest combined: Azure is at 19 percent of the market, Google Cloud at seven percent, Alibaba Cloud close behind at six percent, and other clouds with 37 percent.
Also, the IDC projects that worldwide spending on public cloud services and infrastructure will double over the next five years, growing from a $229 billion run rate in 2019 to almost $500 billion by 2023. This is driven by a five-year compound annual rate.
Opportunities and challenges for Nigeria
Apart from companies, cloud adoption by countries has picked up in recent times. Countries’ cloud spending rates are projected to rise by 2.8 and 3.2 percentage points from 2019 to 2022, respectively.
While the US leads the rest of the world in cloud spending, countries like the UK and the Netherlands are catching up.
Countries in Africa have little or no share in the cloud computing market. The continent’s stake in the cloud market has mostly been driven by private organisations.
Although top-line annual cloud services revenue is expected to double in the 2018-20123 period to hit $3.8 billion, currently, only about 30 percent of the revenue generated is through the public cloud, according to a Xalam Analytics “State of Cloud 2019” report on Africa.
Barriers to cloud adoption, which could also affect the success of the digital identity system, are the poor state of infrastructure such as electricity, fast internet connectivity, backbone networks, etc.
Although the country has seen the building of data centres, inadequate electricity is mostly why their number is yet to rise and they are not penetrative across the country most consumers and third-party vendors prefer to partner with data centres outside the country with guaranteed infrastructure than with one within the country or at least have a backup with data centres abroad.
Nigeria has an opportunity with its electronic digital identity push to not only scale its adoption of cloud services but also reap immense benefits by creating a policy environment for cloud investments to come into the country.
Deepening cloud adoption could also help the government address issues like empowering small businesses with digital technology.
Also going for national ID card is experts’ views that a rich environment in the cloud will force an interplay of competition and cooperation in the technology industry, thereby enabling cloud providers to produce services catering to specialized needs.
“National security is a multi-dimensional endeavour, and cloud technology enables the right architecture to build systems that the different security agencies in the country can depend on to secure from internal to external threats,” Busola said.
