Sports › FIFA Approves Goal-line Technology For 2014 World Cup by White007(op): 1:29pm On Feb 19, 2013 |
FIFA has approved the use of goal-line technology for the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil. The governing body said the system will also be introduced for the Confederations Cup this summer, also held in Brazil, following a successful trial at the Club World Cup in December. FIFA has now put the contract for World Cup goal-line technology out to tender, marking a key moment in the application of modern technology to a sport first codified in 1848. Two systems, Hawkeye and GoalRef, have so far been licensed by FIFA and both were used at the Club World Cup in Japan, where goal-line technology was employed for the first time. A statement read: "After a successful implementation of Goal-Line Technology (GLT) at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in December 2012, FIFA has decided to use GLT at the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. "The aim is to use GLT in order to support the match officials and to install a system in all stadia, pending the successful installation, and pre-match referee tests. "With different technologies on the market, FIFA has launched a tender today, setting out the technical requirements for the two forthcoming competitions in Brazil. "The two GLT providers already licensed under FIFA’s Quality Programme for GLT, and other GLT providers currently in the licensing process (that must have passed all relevant tests as of today) are invited to submit tenders. "Interested GLT companies will be invited to join an inspection visit to the Confederations Cup venues, currently scheduled for mid-March, with a final decision due to be confirmed in early April." FIFA changed its view on technology after the 2010 World Cup, when a shot from England's Frank Lampard clearly crossed the line but was not given in a second-round match Germany went on to win. Having previously opposed any changes, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said the matter would be investigated urgently. Source |

I was surprised to see him play for Celtic against Juv in a such a high tempo game. Considering he played the final of the AFCON on Sunday night, immediately took a plane on a journey of about 12hours to glasgow, landed on tuesday and forced to play on same day.
What was his coach thinking? That he is a super- human or what? Efe was definitely tired, jet lagged, and burnt out. The coach took a gamble playing him and it all backfired on him. All the blame should fall squarely on the coach. |

Sports › Re: Stephen Keshi Resigns As Eagles Coach by White007(m): 5:13am On Feb 12, 2013 |
This just in... Presidency wades in to convince Keshi to stay on as Eagles coach Just as Nigerians begin to savour the joy of being African champions, confusion has set into the camp of the Super Eagles with Coach Stephen Keshi announcing his resignation on Monday.
Keshi who is billed to return with his players to Nigeria Tuesday (today) was first quoted in South Africa as having resigned his position as the manager of the Nigerian team despite winning the African cup on Sunday with a 1-0 defeat of Burkina Faso in the final match.
The Eagles Media Officer, Ben Alaiya, on Monday night confirmed that Keshi indeed resigned.
“It is true,” Alaiya wrote in a terse response to a text from one of our correspondents. While speaking to a South African radio show on Monday evening, Keshi said that he handed in his resignation letter after the match on Sunday night.
“I gave them (Nigeria Football Federation) my letter of resignation immediately after last night’s game, but I haven’t heard from them yet,” Keshi told Metro FM on Monday night.
A communication line soon opened between the Presidency and Keshi after the announcement and the former captain of the national team confirmed he had resigned and was only awaiting the response of the NFF officials.
A very highly placed official in the Presidency told The PUNCH in an exclusive interview on Monday that the matter had been taken up immediately. The source added that after the discussion with Keshi, he agreed to withdraw his resignation and continue his job with the team.
The official said, “Yes, it is very true that Keshi resigned his position as coach of the Eagles. That he confirmed to us. It was quite alarming given the complaints he brought up. There were a lot on things going on that the nation didn’t know.
“He informed us about backlog of salaries, his official car that has only been on paper since he took office. Even in South Africa, money was a lot of issue. It is appalling but the key thing is that Keshi has calmed down and has agreed to continue as the coach of Nigeria.”
Apart from his car and salary, we learnt that the Eagles coach complained bitterly of not getting the cash due him in South Africa during the Nations Cup. He also complained that his players were being owed a lot of money as the promises were more on the pages of the newspapers than being fulfilled.
Keshi could not be reached despite efforts by The PUNCH last night.
It was also quite tough getting a response from the NFF on the matter.
The NFF Chief Media Officer, Ademola Olajire, did not respond to our mail.
But a former goalkeeper with the Nigerian team who is now based in South Africa, Peterside Idah, confirmed Keshi’s resignation via his Twitter handle.
Idah tweeted, “Yes, he told me so, he would resign on Saturday, spent some time with him. Will give you reasons why he quit tomorrow.”
It was learnt that the members of the Federation went into an emergency meeting on Monday over the matter.
The triumph of the Eagles at the Nations Cup indeed took many people by surprise as they were not amongst the competition favourites.
The national team came into the consciousness of the citizens after they defeated cup favourites, Ivory Coast, in the quarter-finals. Before then the NFF officials had put a lot of pressure on Eagles when it appeared that the team would not scale through the group stages.
Before the last group match against Ethiopia the NFF had issued an official press release stating that Keshi had “no excuse for failure.”
But the Super Eagles then defeated Ethiopia to qualify for the next stage and that calmed a lot of nerves.
Keshi in one of his reactions afterwards said he was virtually on the sack list until the tide turned for him.
“Nobody believed in me. They were sure that this team would not get anywhere and they wanted to sack me during the competition,” he said.
Keshi is expected to fly back with the team today for the Tuesday night reception holding at the Presidential Villa, irrespective of the situation. |

Interesting. Its resemblance to current American fighter-bombers isn't coincidence, I think. Ditto for Chinese military aircraft. Maybe these similarities are strictly due to the aerodynamics involved, or the "stealth" technology, but I doubt it. It wouldn't be surprising to find out that American multinational aerospace corporations are selling technology to both sides, much as ITT did during World War II. Of course, the multinational banks like HSBC are glad to launder money to hide these transactions, as they have done for Mexican drug cartels and also for the Iranian missile program. Conspiracy theory? No. Check out the history of these events. Corporations are people, but they're not Americans, and they seem to have diplomatic immunity to prosecution as well. |

It was a simple financial decision by all the involved parties. The Algerian government absorbs the responsibility, as they are the most convienient entity for such tasks. 10% of the Algerian economy was never going to be idled for a long, drawn out negotiation process. The longer the situation continued, the more difficult to pick up where they left off in production. People who like being rich and powerful will do most anything when they're watching millions of dollars evaporate at an accelerating rate. Now if Jihadists took 50 Americans hostage in an Algerian KFC, they'd talk it over for 5 years before considering any use of force. |

Politics › London: Nigerian Teenagers Jailed For Gang Activity by White007(op): 9:57pm On Dec 20, 2012 |
Two Nigerian teenagers Nelson Idiabeta and Nathaniel Okusanya on Wednesday bagged long time jail terms for killing Kwame Ofosu - Asare, a 17-year-old student while mistaking him for a rival gang member, Daily Mail reports.
The pair were members of the TN1 gang - Trust No One - out to avenge one of their member who was stabbed by a rival gang member from the GAS gang - Guns and Shanks - just hours earlier.
They had toured housing estates in Brixton, South London, United Kingdom, to find rival gang members and came upon 17-year-old Kwame and his friend, who had nothing to do with any gangs.
He was reportedly coming from the studio with his friend were he went to record a track for his mum before he was attacked.
The duo stabbed the trapped Ghanaian 14 times penetrating his lungs and liver while his friend managed to jump the wall.
A court in the early hours of Wednesday sentenced Idiabeta and Okusanya to jail for 19 and 20 years respectively.
After an Old Bailey jury found the pair guilty Nelson Idiabeta, now 18 was jailed for a minimum of 19 years while Nathaniel Okusanya, 19, was jailed for 20 years.
Sentencing Judge Richard Marks QC said: 'I am entirely satisfied having heard the evidence the background to this terrible offence is to be found in revenge between two gangs.
The attack took place in the Moorlands Estate in Brixton on the March 2 2012.
He was a sixth-form student of Forest Hill School and excelled in sport, music and acting. He moved to London from Ghana in 2002. http://odili.net/news/source/2012/dec/20/805.html |
