Music/RadioRe: Genevieve Nnaji in the Music Profession? by whizkid(f): 11:13am On May 31, 2005
I thought her music was rubbish, no offence. I think the record company is just using her, trying to sell her face and fame. If not why did they sign her on, even a deaf man knows she doesn't sing well.
BusinessRe: NIPOST's EMS Speedpost - what are your experiences? by whizkid(f): 10:19am On May 31, 2005

May Devotions

Ave Maria.

This post is coming a little late, we have few days left in the month of May and remember brothers and sisters that this is the month of Mary our Mother. But it is never too late in the house of the Lord, so please do remember to say your rosary and meditate on them. Glory be to Jesus, honour to Mary.

PoliticsMinisterial Nominee fails simple questions. by whizkid(op): 12:46pm On May 20, 2005
It is a quite a shame that some people occupy important positions in politics without meriting it. How can you explain the fact that a former Ambassador is not aware of government policies. To be precise, Ambassador Adebayo Yusuf, former Ambassodor to Togo, was nominated for the position of the Housing Minister to replace Mrs. Mobolaji Osomo( who was sacked). He could not give the full meaning of the acronym NEEDS( National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy), an economic policy introduced by the FG. You cannot believe is answer and I quote " All I know is that needs is different from wants. And needs is backed with wants"  smiley cheesygrin grin.
Wait! still more, our Ambassador couldn't talk about the reforms going on in the banking industry, he doesn't know the diference between deposits and equity, recommend and nominate shocked. Oh boy! If it was an audition for Papa Ajasco and company, he would have won. grin. He made a complete fool of himself in front of the Senators

And he was an Ambassador? This guy was recommended by the governor of his state, Ondo, Olusegun Agagu and nominated by Mr. President OBJ. What did they base their recommendation on? I wonder. That is how they put incompetent people in high positions. At the end it is the masses that suffers.

God help Nigeria!

The deal is sealed, from the 1st of July, Nepa will be 'christained' Power holding company of Nigeria.
But guys, so what will happen when there is power outage and it is eventually restored, most of say 'up Nepa'; with the change of name what do we say? 'up Power holding'? or 'up PHCN'is going to be pretty tough adjusting, don't you think?

I have watched movies where children keep non poisonous snakes and mice as pets but I have never heard or seen anybody out here in Nigeria do that.

PhonesGlo Link Cards: International Prepaid Call Cards from Globacom by whizkid(op): 5:04pm On May 12, 2005
Globacom, has just introduced international prepaid calling cards to the Nigerian market- the Glo Link Cards. The service is offered by Globacom's international gateway arm, Glo Gateway, and is meant to improve the quality of service experienced by Nigerians using international prepaid call cards.

The cards are available in four denominations of N500, N1,000 N2,000 and N5,000 with validity periods of 60, 90, 180 and 360 days respectively.

According to the Chief Operating Officer of Glo Gateway, Ashok Israni, For as low as N15 per minute, Nigerians will enjoy crystal clear voice calls to key destinations.

What do you think guys? I think small companies that are in the prepaid international calling card business are about to be wiped out i.e if they do not sit up.

CareerRe: Office Romance: Would you date your colleague? by whizkid(f): 1:11pm On May 11, 2005
seun:
On the Mobile Nigeria Forum some people mentioned that companies like Globacom and a lot of reputable banks have such policies, but I really don't understand it. What is their reason for not allowing couples to work together in the same company?

huh huh huh
I think most companies do not trust couples to keep their personal lives separate from their business lives, and that if couples work together it can reduce productivity. Couples share common interest like if there is a death in the family, someone is ill in the family etc, employers are concerned that two members of Staff(couples) would have to take time off at the same time to attend to these family issues, which really isn't good for business.

I am sure there are so many obvious reasons why they put up this policy.
CareerRe: Office Romance: Would you date your colleague? by whizkid(f): 12:31pm On May 11, 2005
If it is not against company policies, yes why not? The only thing is if you can be professional enough to handle it such that it doesn't affect your jobs. If the relationship leads to marriage and one of you is expected to quit your job as in most company policies, no big deal, quit and look for another job. The most important thing is you both are happy to spend the rest of your lives together. I have friends who were caught up in such dilemma and they have no regrets.
AutosRe: 4,000 naira fine for use of cellphone while driving as from 1st of July (FRSC) by whizkid(f): 11:32am On May 11, 2005
diakim:
And lets I forget, apart from phoning, there are other things that can distract your attention while driving, like fiddling with your car stereo, talking with the passenger inside your car, children noises and distraction, reading newspapers while driving in traffic jam ( shocked) and loud music from the car stereo. All these should be looked together when we are considering the issue of safety on the roads.
Diakim, I very much agree with you. Apart from phoning, ( some people go as far as reading/sending text messages while driving) other things distract attention while driving, people even eat while driving( to add to those already enumerated bv you). All these issues has been there even before GSM came to Nigeria but never addressed. I don't know why the FRSC is particular with making/receiving calls while driving.

Another thing they should make clear is whether Drivers are allowed to use handsfree while driving, in my opinion, Drivers should switch off their phones while driving, handsfree or no handsfree because  ones concentration level drops when one make/receive calls while driving.

TV/MoviesRe: Nigeria has a Satellite in Orbit! (NigeriaSat-1) by whizkid(f): 3:53pm On May 10, 2005
A National workshop was organized by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in collaboration with Remote Sensing and Geoinformatic Association of Nigeria (RESGAN) and Geoinformation Society of Nigeria (GEOSON) from 15th to 17th June 2004 at the Le Meridian Hotel Abuja.

The purpose of the workshop was to sensitize stakeholders and users of satellite images on the utilization of NigeriaSat-1 data in various areas of socio- economic activities and sustainable national development, particularly in the areas of agriculture, solid mineral development, water resources development, health care delivery, defence and security, tourism, demographic survey, transportation and disaster management. Also, To provide a forum for experts to discuss and rationalize issues related to NigeriaSat-1 and other satellite data such as satellite data policy, pricing and commercialization in Nigeria.

The Federal Government proposed launching of a higher resolution Satellite (NigeriaSat-2) later this year, I don't know if they are still on it.

seun:
You can simply use the standard smiley shortcuts in your text:
:-)  ;-)  :-(  :-D

If the person at the other end understands what those smileys mean, then you have communicated.  Smileys don't have to be converted into graphics for people to understand their meaning!  Smileys were originally used for pure text messaging on computer networks.  The smiley graphics were added later.
So why would I want to go back to the old style? or restrict the number of smilies I use to the standard ones? or even bother myself with cramming smilies so that I know what they stand for when someone send the shortcut? huh

@ Hidden Hunter. What model of phone do you use?

FashionBeauty Pageantry! What's the point? by whizkid(op): 11:27am On May 09, 2005
In Nigeria today, we have so many beauty pageantry springing up here and there, but what is the point of these competitions? Apart from helping young girls gain fame and make quick money?

I think it is very degrading to the womenfolks, parading in swimsuit, (even the last Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) competition, the girls have graduated into wearing just pants and bras). They say beauty with brains, most of the girls couldn't even answer simple questions correctly.

Why should we allow men to 'use' us? I don't see them parading in pants in front of a large audience all in the name of competition. These are my views by the way, feel free to share yours.

If you want to go by looks, then there are lots of cute Nigerian actresses and actors wink. But by what they do I think thumbs up for Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde, Stella Aboderin. For actors, Ramsey Noah, Pete Edochie, Alex Osifo, Richard Mofe-Damijo are my favorites. I always look out for these people when shopping for Home videos.

HealthRe: Hereditary Diseases And Marriage by whizkid(f): 3:47pm On May 05, 2005
Still on hereditary diseases and marriage, the other day, I heard the president of the sickle cell association of Nigeria say over the radio that for every 4 Nigerians, 1 has the sickle cell triat. At this rate , future generations would have this sickle cell trait and eventually sufferers I.e  if nothing is done about this. One thing we can do is to know our genotypes and the genotype of whomever we intend to marry, so that this catastrophe will not befall our Children and Children's children.
Nairaland GeneralRe: White Lies by whizkid(op): 2:44pm On May 05, 2005
@ Diakim

Your lies definitely fit into the white lies category. But nobody is judging you bro, smiley I only wanted to know if there is any moral justification for telling them. In your case, those lies are not very important but when the people you tell white lies are people you care about, then it could sometimes be an issue because sometimes lies have a way of 'catching up' with you.
Nairaland GeneralWhite Lies by whizkid(op): 1:49pm On May 05, 2005
Let me start by defining what the term White lie is:an unimportant lie (especially one told to be tactful or polite).

So many people are guilty of telling lies especially the white lies For example, I tell someone, oh nice hair do, without meaning it, but beause I know it will make the person feel good, I compliment her looks anyway, sometimes people even tell white lies in their relationships another example, I tell my spouse I went to see my mum when really I was hanging out with an old friend I had a crush on back in the university, that does not mean I love my spouse any less, but so that my spouse is not hurt, I tell a lie (white lie) etc.

1. I know it is a sin to tell a lie but is there any moral justification to tell a white lie?
2. Should one tell white lies, just to save one's neck? What about the truth shall set you free?
3. Remember also that "a lie breds another lie"?!

Please what are your views?
