A major breakthrough in the treatment of cancer, diabetes and prostate enlargement mayhave been discovered following announcement of a new drug for the treatment of the ailments by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Professor Ernest B. Izevbigie.
He made the announcement at a press briefing organized bythe University to announce the discovery, adding that themedicines, which are nature-based, have little or no toxicity, as is usually found insuch drugs. Prof. Izevbigie who announced the breakthrough, stated that themedicines which were made from the bitter leaf (vernonia amygdalina), have been certified by the National Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and have been internationally accepted,as the National Academy of Inventors (NIA) have endorsed it.
“We started out in 2000 making initial observation. In 2001, we applied for provisional patent, and after one year we were assigned toa patent officer, and we were awarded patent in 2003. In 2005, we isolated two other products, and had to get patents for each.
“The patent gives us 18 years sole ownership. After three years, we came up with the right formulation to venture into commercial manufacturing. From 2008, we went into the market. So we have been on ground in Nigeria for 13 years, and 8 inthe United States,” Prof. Izevbigie also disclosed that he received two U.S. patents for Edotide in 2009 for the treatment of cancer and diabetes. Edotide can suppress, kill, or delay cancerous cells, and it reduces blood glucose by 50%in mammals.

Following consultation with various stakeholders in the telecoms industry, the regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission, has released a new set of interconnection rates determination for voice services.
Kicking off on April 1, 2013, the new determination rates, which significantly reviewed prices downwards, are informed by the depth of competition in the industry while taking into considerationthe position of New Entrants and Small Operators.
Determination.
In a statement signed by the Commission’s Director of Public Affairs,Tony Ojobo, theNCC determines that the Termination Rates for voice services provided by new entrants and small operators in Nigeria, irrespective of the originating network, shall be N6.40k from 1st April, 2013; N5.20 from April 1, 2014; and N3.90 from April 1, 2015.
The Termination Rates for voice services provided by Other Operators in Nigeria, irrespective of the originatingnetwork, shall be N4.90 from April 1, 2013; N4.40 from April1, 2014; and N3.90 from April 1, 2015.
The Determination, which takes effect from April 1, 2013, will remain valid and binding on licensees for the next three years except further reviewed by the Commission.
Note:
∙ New entrant is defined as newly licensed Operator entering an existing or new market within 0 to 3 years.
∙ Small Operator is defined, for the purpose of the Determination, as an existing Operator with a market share of 0 – 7.5 per cent in terms ofsubscriber base.
It will be recalled that the current interconnection rate regulation was implemented through the Commission’s Interconnection Rate Determination issued on December 21, 2009.
Since then, the Nigerian communications market has seen tremendous growth in both subscriber numbers as well as traffic volumes and available technologies (e.g. 3G).
The current rate, which is symmetric to all operators, is N8.2k
