bolt000, you may need to check out this thread; https://www.nairaland.com/2988881/atheism-terrorism-annihilation-quest-atheistic
it will give you more info on atheism and terrorism.

In the past 100 years alone, atheistic leaders and their governments under the banner of atheistic communism have caused the death of somewhere between 158,368,610 to 259,432,000 human lives. The historical record of collective atheism is thus 182,716 times worse on an annual basis than Christianity’s worst and most infamous misdeed, the Spanish Inquisition. This means that the average atheist crime against humanity is 18.3 million percent worse than the very worst depredation committed by Christians, even though atheists have had less than one-twentieth the number of opportunities with which to commit them.

Christianity Etc › 4 Simple Responses To Science-based Atheism by winner01(op):
Lack of scientific knowledge can leave Christians feeling vulnerable when talking to unbelieving friends about why faith is superior to skepticism. Many college students discover atheism through science classes; students who enter university as Christians have their faith fiercely tested by their studies, and too many give up the fight merely because they assume a biology professor must be correct about whether God exists. When a little bit of childlike faith meets a lot of studied atheism, fear can take control.

That’s unnecessary. You don’t need a degree in science to have something to say to those with scientific objections to faith. Here are four simple responses to those who claim science has either disproved God or has made belief in God unnecessary.

1. We cannot know from science if science itself is the best source of knowledge.

There are two possibilities when it comes to human knowledge through science.

The first is that everything real is actually reducible to scientific principles. Everything—from the universe, to human emotion, to spiritual experiences—is explainable through scientific research.

The other option is simple: Not all existence can be explained through science.

Here’s why this question matters. If the first option is true, then logically science is the supreme mode of knowledge, and everything we believe about anything must be in submission to it. The problem, though, is that whether all of reality is ultimately explainable through scientific concepts is not itself a scientifically provable theory. It’s a philosophical premise, not a scientific conclusion. The only way to definitively prove that science explains everything would be to have exhaustive knowledge of all reality, and then be able to explain (using only scientific data) what all reality is and what it means. Such a feat is impossible. Therefore, the belief that science is the best source of knowledge must be accepted on faith, since it cannot be verified through testing.

2. Scientific consensus can and frequently does change. This limits its epistemological authority.

The progressive nature of scientific inquiry is essential to its value. Done rightly, science can correct its own errors. But this presupposes science can make errors in the first place. And if that’s true, we must ask: How do we know what could be a current error in scientific consensus, and what do we know is absolutely true?

This is an important question to ask religious skeptics who appeal to science. A likely response is that science may be wrong on almost everything it says, but it almost certainly isn’t wrong about what it doesn’t say (i.e., if science hasn’t revealed God by now, it’s not rational to think it will). But this objection misses the point. One doesn’t wait on science to exhaustively explain something before believing it. If that were so, then 99 percent of human beings on the planet wouldn’t believe in the most basic realities of existence, or would be irrational in believing without having exhaustive scientific knowledge. If current scientific consensus points away from the existence of God (a highly disputable point), then who’s to say that consensus cannot change? If it can, then science’s intellectual authority is limited, and the expectation it will continue to oppose religious belief is more a matter of faith.

I remember giving cloudgoddess a similar point (quoted below) on one of her posts sometime ago.
winner01:
You would find out that the highly acclaimed institutions you side with aren't as close minded as you are, they are open to changes in scientific findings if give compelling contrary evidence.

Havard, NASA, Oxford and other scientific communities all supported Nicholas copernicus and the infinite universe theory. In other words they not only funded and supported lies but also spread it and changed it later due to a more substantial contrary evidence.

Giordano Bruno, also a heavyweight in the infinite universe theory was and is still supported till date with a 22km impact crater on the far side of the Moon named in his honor, as are the main belt asteroids 5148 Giordano and 13223 Cenaceneri; the latter is named for one of his works. All these for a theory which turned out to be a lie.

Its why Sir Ambrose Flemming made the famous quote;
“We must not build on the sands of an uncertain and everchanging science…but upon the rock of inspired Scriptures.”

I didnt need to say this and sound like im against science, but really I still dont understand why you people are trying desperately to create a non existent gulf between God and science. "Lie" is a strong word, if not because of you ill rather substitute it with dis-proven theory.

I strongly believe Sir William Herschel who said that;
"All human discoveries seem to be made only for the purpose of confirming more & more strongly the truth contained in the Sacred Scriptures".

We all know this was the case when the CMB was reported. wink
3. Only supernatural theism provides a rational justification for scientific work.

The wording of this point is important. If the word “rational” is left out, then the statement would actually be false and quite easy to shoot down. You don’t need supernatural theism to be curious, or to explore the natural world. But you do need supernatural theism to have a rational justification for science. What does rational mean here? It means that scientific inquiry done on the assumption there’s no higher intelligence than evolved human intelligence is making a value judgment it has no right to make.

Why is knowledge better than ignorance? The atheist would respond that ignorance has less survival value than truth; after all, if you believe wrong things or don’t know enough about your environment, you’re less likely to survive and flourish. But this explanation only applies to a small amount of scientific knowledge. There is little survival value in knowing, for example, the complicated workings of time-space theory, or the genus of certain insects, or the distance from Jupiter to Mars. All of these facts are pursued by scientists as being intrinsically valuable, yet they offer little information that can help guarantee a species’ continued existence.

The real explanation is that scientists pursue these facts because there’s intrinsic value in knowing what’s true about the world, regardless of how much help it gives us. Human beings believe knowing is better than ignorance because they believe truth is better than falsity, and light is better than darkness. But where does such a conclusion come from? Not from scientific principles. Science itself offers no self-evident account for why it should be pursued. You cannot study science hard enough to understand why you should study science at all.
To study science presupposes a valuing of truth that must be experienced outside of scientific study. It’s only rational to pursue scientific knowledge that doesn’t offer immediate survival value if there is some external, transcendent value in knowing truth. Theism offers an explanation for why knowing truth is valuable. Scientific atheism does not.

4. Only supernatural theism gives us assurance that real scientific knowledge is possible.

Philosopher Alvin Plantinga is famous for articulating what he calls the “evolutionary argument against naturalism.” The argument is complicated in detail but simple in premise. Plantinga begins by putting two facts alongside each other that nearly all atheists agree on.

-First, the theory of evolution is true, and humans have descended from lower life forms over time.
-Second, humans are rational beings in a higher degree and superior way to lesser-evolved creatures.

Plantinga then directs our attention to a tension between these two facts. If humans are a more evolved species of primate, then our cognitive faculties (i.e., the parts of our body and mind that allow us to be rational creatures) have evolved out of lesser cognitive faculties.

But, Plantinga says, if God does not exist, then the only factors that affected human evolution are time and chance. Based on time and chance alone, why should we be confident our rational minds—which are merely the sum of lesser evolved minds plus time and chance—are actually rational at all? What basis do we have to believe our own conclusions? How do we know we’re actually capable of knowing truth more than a primate? If the only players in our existence are lesser creatures, time, and chance, how do we know we’re even highly evolved at all?

This astute observation was echoed by Thomas Nagel in his recent book Mind and Cosmos. Nagel, an agnostic philosopher from New York University, argues that human comprehension of the universe cannot be explained merely by atheistic evolutionary processes. It makes no sense to assume humans can make sense of their world on a conceptual level if human consciousness arose out of the very world it responds to. Nagel agrees with Plantinga that atheistic naturalism cannot explain why human beings can be rational creatures and do rational things that should be trusted.

Scientific knowledge is only possible if things unprovable by science are actually true. If Carl Sagan is correct and the material universe is all there was, is, and ever will be, then science itself is nothing more than a shot in the dark. If, however, human beings are the products of an infinitely greater mind, then we have justification for believing that true and false are realities and not just the shadow puppets of our ancestors.

I would like to use this opportunity to query all the aforementioned atheists about their position on the origin of our present universe.
I made a claim to winner01 in another thread that just about every human accepts the idea that the universe originated out of something. In other words, even those who espouse the notion of a spontaneous genesis from nothing, still accept the fact that the nothing in question was an unknown something or preexisting material.
What do you all think? Does anyone here believe that the universe did not have a source or a point of origin?
You dont need to state the possible answers when asking a question. I know better than all these. Whey not ask the question alone and evaluate various answers. It turns out that everyone is bias. Quote me when you ready to do the right way.

Christianity Etc › Wrestling With God; WWE Wrestler Shawn Michaels, The Heartbreak Kid Tells It All by winner01(op): 9:55pm On Jun 17, 2016
Shawn Michaels (born Michael Shawn Hickenbottom) is better known as professional wrestler ‘The Heartbreak Kid’.

As one-time heavyweight champion in 2002, and the first wrestler to win the Grand Slam (1996), it’s no wonder that entertainment website IGN described Shawn Michaels as the greatest professional wrestler of all time. ‘Michaels was the most athletic, inspired and daring storyteller in the business; raising the bar for the entire industry with each match’, reads the website.

But when it comes to Shawn’s greatest memory of his lengthy career (1984-2010), the wrestler would rather talk about the moment he committed his life to Christ than bask in any glory his fans would bestow upon him.

FINDING FAITH
His conversion took place in April 2002, during a lengthy break from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). A back injury brought on by a match against The Undertaker in the Royal Rumble resulted in Shawn being told he’d never wrestle again.

‘Things had fallen apart from a professional standpoint,’ he remembers.

Shawn was addicted to painkillers, taking up to 35 pills each day. ‘I was a mess, often passing out on the couch.’

His wife, Rebecca, would take care of him, and persistently prayed that God would help Shawn kick the habit.

As Rebecca’s faith grew, Shawn started to read the Bible for himself and ended up in tears, praying the ‘sinner’s prayer’ at a Bible study group in his local church.

Shawn recounts, ‘I re-engaged in my faith in a much more real way and it was the greatest thing: becoming a Christian, being born again, whatever words you want to say. But for me it was developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and having a real faith in your life. Not just an abstract thing where you believe and might go to church here and there. It was a real active part of my life and the life of my family.’

THE DILEMMA
Having reignited his faith in God – Shawn was brought up as a Catholic and had served as an altar boy – the wrestler was faced with a dilemma. He’d made a remarkable recovery from his injury. But should he restart his career? Could he be both a Christian and a wrestler?

‘Everything in the wrestling business ends up in a fight. Yes it is entertainment, but everything we do we resolve with physical violence. What kind of Christian statement is that?’ he asked himself.

‘As I struggled with that, it dawned on me that the one thing I’ve always been good at, has been in my heart and I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember, is wrestle. I realised God does not give us gifts he doesn’t want us to use. I made the decision to go back.’

Shawn’s choice was controversial, but as he grew and matured as a Christian he became less and less concerned about his detractors.

‘The most important thing is knowing who you are in your faith, knowing who you are in Christ...If you can do that, you can darned well do anything.’

Shawn was confident his wrestling wouldn’t be going against God’s commandments. On the contrary, he’d be wrestling with God on his side.

Upon returning to WWE, Shawn was determined not to let his faith take a ‘back seat’. Faith had become ‘the most impactful and most important’ part of his life.

SHAWN WAS ADDICTED TO PAINKILLERS, TAKING UP TO 35 PILLS EACH DAY

He stopped taking pills, stopped drinking and stopped taking drugs. Fame was no longer an idol. Money wasn’t so important.

‘There was nothing about my previous lifestyle that I wanted to revisit,’ he says. ‘I have to give WWE a ton of credit. They never once pressured me to try and do something that I was uncomfortable with. I didn’t want to go over the top with cursing or sexual innuendo. But those were not really tough battles. It’s not as if that’s what Shawn Michaels or The Heartbreak Kid was reliant on. It was never a difficult stance to make.’

Shawn was able to wear T-shirts with Christian slogans inside the ring. But how does he justify participating in a sport which, in the eyes of many Christians, seeks to glorify violence?

Shawn’s response is to say he’s merely ‘playing a part’. He compares wrestlers to actors.

‘Absolutely no one questions the faith of the guy who is playing Satan in the church Christmas pageant. Nobody sits there and worries, “Oh my goodness, he must be struggling in his faith – we should rally around and talk to him!”’

And what about the sport’s impact on younger fans?

‘[Wrestling is] something that sons and dads enjoy watching. We have to be good stewards of whatever it is that we’re doing. Our American Football is also violent. But I wouldn’t say that it’s bad.

‘The focus is on us parents. I wouldn’t suggest parking [children] in front of it and leaving them alone for two or three hours. But if it’s something you can share together as a family, it’s something which can also be edifying.’

FINAL BOW
Shawn’s wrestling career ended for good in 2010.

‘When I exited the ring for the final time, I walked away with complete peace. That would not have happened without my faith. If I had not been a Christian when I retired, I probably would have been another one of those athletes who struggled miserably through the transition to life after competition. But when I left, being a wrestler was no longer my identity.

‘While I recognised that I had made an impact on wrestling, there was a place to which God had called me to make a more significant impact: my home. I said in my farewell speech that I was leaving to spend more time with my family, and I meant it. I have stayed true to my word.

‘I took too many things for granted when I was wrestling, but now I continue to offer thanks for my career. I’m thrilled where my life is at. I’ve got the good Lord to thank for that.’

Wrestling for My Life (Zondervan) is out now, you can get your copy online.

God bless you.

The number of Christians in Communist China is growing so steadily that it by 2030 it could have more churchgoers than America

It is said to be China's biggest church and on Easter Sunday thousands of worshippers will flock to this Asian mega-temple to pledge their allegiance – not to the Communist Party, but to the Cross.

The 5,000-capacity Liushi church, which boasts more than twice as many seats as Westminster Abbey and a 206ft crucifix that can be seen for miles around, opened last year with one theologian declaring it a "miracle that such a small town was able to build such a grand church".

The £8 million building is also one of the most visible symbols of Communist China's breakneck conversion as it evolves into one of the largest Christian congregations on earth.

"It is a wonderful thing to be a follower of Jesus Christ. It gives us great confidence," beamed Jin Hongxin, a 40-year-old visitor who was admiring the golden cross above Liushi's altar in the lead up to Holy Week.

"If everyone in China believed in Jesus then we would have no more need for police stations. There would be no more bad people and therefore no more crime," she added.

Officially, the People's Republic of China is an atheist country but that is changing fast as many of its 1.3 billion citizens seek meaning and spiritual comfort that neither communism nor capitalism seem to have supplied.

Christian congregations in particular have skyrocketed since churches began reopening when Chairman Mao's death in 1976 signalled the end of the Cultural Revolution.
Less than four decades later, some believe China is now poised to become not just the world's number one economy but also its most numerous Christian nation.

"By my calculations China is destined to become the largest Christian country in the world very soon," said Fenggang Yang, a professor of sociology at Purdue University and author of Religion in China: Survival and Revival under Communist Rule.

"It is going to be less than a generation. Not many people are prepared for this dramatic change."

China's Protestant community, which had just one million members in 1949, has already overtaken those of countries more commonly associated with an evangelical boom. In 2010 there were more than 58 million Protestants in China compared to 40 million in Brazil and 36 million in South Africa, according to the Pew Research Centre's Forum on Religion and Public Life.
Prof Yang, a leading expert on religion in China, believes that number will swell to around 160 million by 2025. That would likely put China ahead even of the United States, which had around 159 million Protestants in 2010 but whose congregations are in decline.

By 2030, China's total Christian population, including Catholics, would exceed 247 million, placing it above Mexico, Brazil and the United States as the largest Christian congregation in the world, he predicted.

"Mao thought he could eliminate religion. He thought he had accomplished this," Prof Yang said. "It's ironic – they didn't. They actually failed completely."

Like many Chinese churches, the church in the town of Liushi, 200 miles south of Shanghai in Zhejiang province, has had a turbulent history.
It was founded in 1886 after William Edward Soothill, a Yorkshire-born missionary and future Oxford University professor, began evangelising local communities.

But by the late 1950s, as the region was engulfed by Mao's violent anti-Christian campaigns, it was forced to close.
Liushi remained shut throughout the decade of the Cultural Revolution that began in 1966, as places of worship were destroyed across the country.

Since it reopened in 1978 its congregation has gone from strength to strength as part of China's officially sanctioned Christian church – along with thousands of others that have accepted Communist Party oversight in return for being allowed to worship.

Today it has 2,600 regular churchgoers and holds up to 70 baptisms each year, according to Shi Xiaoli, its 27-year-old preacher. The parish's revival reached a crescendo last year with the opening of its new 1,500ft mega-church, reputedly the biggest in mainland China.

"Our old church was small and hard to find," said Ms Shi. "There wasn't room in the old building for all the followers, especially at Christmas and at Easter. The new one is big and eye-catching."

The Liushi church is not alone. From Yunnan province in China's balmy southwest to Liaoning in its industrial northeast, congregations are booming and more Chinese are thought to attend Sunday services each week than do Christians across the whole of Europe.

A recent study found that online searches for the words "Christian Congregation" and "Jesus" far outnumbered those for "The Communist Party" and "Xi Jinping", China's president.

Among China's Protestants are also many millions who worship at illegal underground "house churches", which hold unsupervised services – often in people's homes – in an attempt to evade the prying eyes of the Communist Party.

Such churches are mostly behind China's embryonic missionary movement – a reversal of roles after the country was for centuries the target of foreign missionaries. Now it is starting to send its own missionaries abroad, notably into North Korea, in search of souls.

"We want to help and it is easier for us than for British, South Korean or American missionaries," said one underground church leader in north China who asked not to be named.

The new spread of Christianity has the Communist Party scratching its head.
"The child suddenly grew up and the parents don't know how to deal with the adult," the preacher, who is from China's illegal house-church movement, said.

Some officials argue that religious groups can provide social services the government cannot, while simultaneously helping reverse a growing moral crisis in a land where cash, not Communism, has now become king.

They appear to agree with David Cameron, the British prime minister, who said last week that Christianity could help boost Britain's "spiritual, physical and moral" state.
Ms Shi, Liushi's preacher, who is careful to describe her church as "patriotic", said: "We have two motivations: one is our gospel mission and the other is serving society. Christianity can also play a role in maintaining peace and stability in society.

Without God, people can do as they please."
Yet others within China's leadership worry about how the religious landscape might shape its political future, and its possible impact on the Communist Party's grip on power, despite the clause in the country's 1982 constitution that guarantees citizens the right to engage in "normal religious activities".

As a result, a close watch is still kept on churchgoers, and preachers are routinely monitored to ensure their sermons do not diverge from what the Party considers acceptable.
In Liushi church a closed circuit television camera hangs from the ceiling, directly in front of the lectern.

"They want the pastor to preach in a Communist way. They want to train people to practice in a Communist way," said the house-church preacher, who said state churches often shunned potentially subversive sections of the Bible. The Old Testament book in which the exiled Daniel refuses to obey orders to worship the king rather than his own god is seen as "very dangerous", the preacher added.

Such fears may not be entirely unwarranted. Christians' growing power was on show earlier this month when thousands flocked to defend a church in Wenzhou, a city known as the "Jerusalem of the East", after government threats to demolish it. Faced with the congregation's very public show of resistance, officials appear to have backed away from their plans, negotiating a compromise with church leaders.
"They do not trust the church, but they have to tolerate or accept it because the growth is there," said the church leader. "The number of Christians is growing – they cannot fight it. They do not want the 70 million Christians to be their enemy."

The underground leader church leader said many government officials viewed religion as "a sickness" that needed curing, and Prof Yang agreed there was a potential threat.
The Communist Party was "still not sure if Christianity would become an opposition political force" and feared it could be used by "Western forces to overthrow the Communist political system", he said.
Churches were likely to face an increasingly "intense" struggle over coming decade as the Communist Party sought to stifle Christianity's rise, he predicted.
"There are people in the government who are trying to control the church. I think they are making the last attempt to do that."

You are welcome. You can start off by looking at the mirror.

The journey started when as a Catholic I was constantly harassed by fellow Christians because of my belief. I sought for a unifying factor. .. I thought to myself that something should connect us. Why do we choose to magnify the things that separate us and pay less attention to those that bring us together.

The brotherhood of man (and I dare to add nature... for I will later learn everything on the universe is made of the same stuff) transcends the sovereignty of state.

We are one... We are parts of God.

The topics I use to read here prompted me to write "Is religion dying?" and looking at the world today, you will agree with me that is really dying. God help us all.
Religion actually is growing. It was worse in the 20th century where several communist countries forbade religion and killed millions who were caught. The fact that few atheists take to nairaland to pour out their hatred for God does not mean anything. They are constantly here because this is where they can voice out their hatred. In real life, they will receive little or no audience. Most of them are closet atheists in real life and they boil with hurt whenever they see christians. Seeing christians reminds them that God exists and so they wish there were none so as to fully suppress their belief in God.
Many christians feel it is needless to reply them because our worldview is against hate and mockery which is exactly the tactics they use against us. And I know it is difficult to reply them without giving them a taste of their medicine.
I suggest you leave the religion section if you will or we can become apologetics for the sake of other people that can be affected by this vengeful individuals. You can check some of my threads, i posted sufficient links that can help. The totality of these religion section atheists are less than 30, but the hatred which motivates them to fight God constantly is why it seems like religion is loosing, and of course the little or no response from christians. More determined god-haters have lived and died, the same will happen to these ones. Their children will lift the Gospel. Till then, we will continue to expose the bleak and worthless ideology called atheism. Shalom.

Duhh.... The sphagetti Monster, sorry, Oduduwa, sorry, Domino Indomie, Otem, sorry.....

The Pink Unicorn did it.
We know this because:
1) She is pink
2) she is a unicorn.

We accept this on faith and dare anyone to prove us wrong.
Go on.......we're waiting...
What if we are not interested in proving you wrong?

God is ambiguous. It invokes different ideas and images. Atheists use more precise language instead. Wetin dey worri u? Why do you feel slighted?
Atheists rage at anything God. Isnt it surprising that you are the only "atheist" that has this idea of a God as the source of the universeundecided.
You have the views of a deist.

I have ignored so many insults from him and PastorAIO seems to go blind temporarily when he sees the insults . Atheists are so hypocritical af
Frank317 is the most unintelligent atheist on nairaland, at least by assessing his posts. He regurgitates the same words over and spices it with insults.
I can point out an insult on almost every christian thread he visits.

There's a BBC documentary on the history of disbelieve recorded over a decade ago. I want you to give a watch, it will be worth your while.

I make no boast to say that you'd be surprised to find that disbelief predates the formation of Christianity.
Thanks. Disbelief and lack of belief however are two different things.

I believe you will learn a thing or two if you also Click (HERE).

Bless you.

PastorAIO:
Ignore him. His sole purpose for coming to NL is to prove that he has the biggest vocabulary and is the most intelligent person here. That's all. It is best to just concede those points to him and then ignore him. You can't get a decent conversation out of him.
You can say the same for frank317 especially.

theoneJabulani:
God has never left any physical evidence of his existence on earth.
All historical gods were imaginary and we know it.
None of Jesus' "miracles" left any physical evidence either.
All available evidence we have, points directly to God.
How do you know that all historical gods were imaginary. You are expressing infinite knowledge and that's outrageous
Jesus' miracles left evidences. The Bible is an example. Atheists also ask me to read books.

theoneJabulani:
God has never spoken to modern man, for example by taking over all the television stations and broadcasting a rational message to everyone.
The resurrected Jesus has never appeared to anyone in a provable way.
God speaks to people. Humble your heart, you will find Him.

Jesus has appeared to several people. You can check youtube for the testimonies of thousands. Jus dont call all of them crazy.

theoneJabulani:
The Bible we have is provably incorrect and is obviously the work of primitive men rather than God.
When we analyze prayer with statistics, we find no evidence that God is "answering prayers."
Huge, amazing atrocities like the Holocaust and AIDS occur without any response from God.
Anything can be disproved. So long you dont want it to be true.
You cant analyze the work of God with your instincts, but you can see the evidence of his works.
The existence of evil is not proof that God does not exists. If anything, it further gives credit to the worldview espoused by the Bible.
