" Selfishness and greed, individual or national, cause most of our troubles - *Harry S. Truman.*" About two decades ago, during my early years of activism, I was fortunate to encounter some antiestablishmentarians. Initially, I was reluctant joining the movement because I saw activism in Nigeria as a death sentence. Hence, I became inadvertently obstinate as a plethora of testosterones continued to play a cardinal role in how my adolescence metamorphosed. Whilst I was busy with other extracurricular activities, I met a particular role model who later ensured I meticulously learned the sacramental ethos of activism, and also guaranteed I completed the doctrinal classes where the fundamental principles of activism are taught. His name was Dr. Biobaku. Sadly, he died many years ago, and were it not for his untimely death, I probably wouldn't have found myself in the educational sector after graduation. He was a principled and hardcore activist who believed in many radical, though unmistakable philosophies. According to him, no activist can thrive in an environment where he or she is subservient to his or her paymaster. Freedom of speech is not absolutely guaranteed where your survival is absolutely dependent on the same master you readily chose as a villain. After his death, I eventually realized many pathetic and ludicrous things, many of which I never had the opportunity to question him about. If he was alive, I wonder if he would still have given me the same answers he used to render, and unapologetically. First, he used to tell me : " Ropo, the sin that God hates most is covetousness. And it's because it leads to every other sin." I didn't get to understand the conceptualization of that satirical locution until recently when I began to analyze, and succinctly, the level of greed and covetousness intrinsically resident in the belly of an average Nigerian. If he was alive, I doubt if he would still put first the interest of an average Nigerian before any other. Probably he would have learned in the other world, that, in the blood of an average Nigerian lies a malignant monster called greed - an unrestrained dracula which has eaten deep into the conscience of every Nigerian and whose effects can only be said to be the grostesqueries of the nation's catastrophe. After the present administration came on board on May 29, 2023, the effects of new reforms became a sucker punch, lacerating the bodies and souls of an average Nigerian like a school of piranhas mutilating the body of an unfortunate capybara which mistakenly dived into an ocean of hurly-burly. Frankly speaking, it was never an easy period for an average Nigerian as more than 70 percent melodramatically fell below the poverty threshold. Agonizing alarms were raised by all and sundry. A series of unending trepidation became the national anthem in every nook and cranny. Civil organizations, journalists, writers, and activists acted belligerently towards the government of the day in a manner never seen in the chronological annals of the country since her return to democracy in 1999. Indeed, sentiments apart, those reforms brought excruciating agonies to Nigerians as over 70 percent were affirmed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as "poor". To be sincere, I also participated actively in critiquing those reforms. Personally, I wrote more than 70 articles and Editorials, each castigating those reforms. While I knew some of Tinubu's reforms were essential and necessary, for me, they were ill-timed. I might not like him, but deep down, I knew that no democratic leader would intentionally unleash horrors on his citizens right from his first day in office. Even, the so-called military juntas wouldn't nurtur such intentions. Tinubu's methodologies might be wrong as he should have taken into cognisance "the poor ", many of whom constitute over 75 percent of the populace. Overall, I knew his intention was not to intentionally suffocate lives out of Nigerians ; but ill-timed. Only God knew what Tinubu was trying to cover for Buhari's administration before implementing those reforms. He's the number one APC chieftain afterall. It's only expected of him to cover Buhari's deficiencies and blotches. If he chooses to expose Buhari and his heinous deeds, many of which aren't known to Nigerians to this day, he'll be doing so at his own peril. Unlike Tinubu, Buhari didn't labor at all before APC was birthed. Consequently, it is naturally expected of Tinubu to remain largely aphonic whenever Buhari's administration and its lifelong damages to the sovereignty of Nigeria and survival of Nigerians are discussed. Surprisingly, over the last few months, it's beginning to look as if Tinubu's reforms have started working gradually. Barring insecurity, no other aspect of life can be said to presently worse off. Even though opposition parties and critics wouldn't admit owing to the fact that their ego must remain unmarred regardless , the indices are there to prove that, generally, Tinubu's administration is beginning to rise above mere talks and promises. For instance, foods are now more easily accessible to a common man as prices of foods have been reduced drastically by over 50 percent in recent months. To buttress this, in January 2024, the inflation rate was over 30 percent. As at today, it has been reduced to as low as 15 percent. A bag of rice now sells for as low as N55,000 against the usual N90,000. Using the same variable, a congo of rice and its beans equivalent now sells for N2000 and N1000 respectively. A congo of garri sells for as low as N400 in some cities. 5 big tubers of Gambari yam is about N9000 in the South-west. It's lesser in the middle-belt and northern regions. Prices of other staple foods have reduced by almost 50 percent comparatively to what Nigerians experienced in 2023 and 2024. Food is the most essential need for any human. For me, it's the most important reform any administration could improvise for the benefit of all Nigerian. If a common man can access food, and seamlessly, then tomorrow is just another day for him to aspire for a greater ambition. This is exactly what over 80 percent of Nigerians who were complaining bitterly in 2023 and 2024 now have unrestricted access to. Even though millions of Nigerians are still disenfranchised without having the purchasing capital to buy in large quantities, relatively, those nasty situations experienced in 2023 and 2024 have become an oblivious episode - at least pro tempore. The situation is the same in the area of transportation. While Aliko Dangote deserves some credits in this regard, he couldn't have been able to singlehandedly fight the occultic coteries and principalities in the oil and gas sector without the support of the present administration. As it stands, a litre of PMS now sells between N720 and N800 depending on the location. The consequential effects of the reduction from around N980 to N720 are expected to be felt by every Nigerian as PMS is an indispensable commodity to all. Even a rural farmer in the most remote village in Nigeria needs PMS in vehicles to convey his farm produce to cities. Unfortunately, despites those positives, Nigerians, many of whom are more greedy than a castrated hyena, continue to exhibit opportunistic tendencies never seen anywhere in the world. Findings and observations reveal that, across the country, transportation prices remain the same. Commercial drivers are one of the worst menaces relentlessly attacking, and taking advantage of Nigerians like a repulsive goblin. They have an insatiable appetite for extortion. There are no checks and balances from their regulatory associations. They increase transport fares, and bizarrely, at a hint of just N1 increment in the price of PMS. But, even with a reduction of almost N200 per litre, they continue to task passengers with the same amounts. Infact, despite the reduction, transportation across the country has increased by almost 20 percent in the last one week. Shouldn't the Federal government and Tinubu find a lasting solution to these perennial cankerworms masquerading as commercial drivers, many of whom continue to frustrate the survival of a common Nigerian? Okada men are also a conglomerate of cursed mephistophelian buzzards, all of whom derive joy inflicting pain on their fellow Nigerians. Market women and food vendors are next hierarchically in the order of sheer wickedness and avarice. Infact, these groups call for a more serious concern. For instance, during the last rainy season in the South-west, I gathered that corn sellers used to buy a bag of fresh corn for as low as N4000 from farmers. A total of 100 pieces is usually embedded in a bag. Mathematically, the implication is that, a corn is sold from farms at just N40 on the average. Surprisingly, most corn sellers were caught selling one at almost N300 in some metropolitan capitals. Could transportation and charcoal on just a corn be more than N100 combined together? The same is experienced with bananas and plantains. A farmer would use his okada to bring a bunch of plantain to the shops of different market women, and probably sell to them at just N1500. Right there, without spending a kobo on transportation, they would resell the same bunch for as much as N5000. Yam sellers aren't different as most of them don't even spend a dime on transportation. Vegetables are sold to market women at probably N30 per one. Yet, without going to farms to witness the rigorous efforts of the farmers, majority sell for as much as N200 per one. In other businesses, the same zenith of cruelty is as consistent as ever. Despite rice being sold for N2000 per congo, food vendors and eateries still sell the same quantities of old at the same prices. A wrap of eba still sells for N200 while a congo is just N400. The quantity remains the same. From a congo of garri, more than N20 wraps of eba can easily be gotten. That's N4,000. Fufu sellers are no different. Bread sellers still sell at outrageous prices despite over 40 percent reduction in the prices of flours, sugar, etc.. In every corner, greed and wickedness to one another are the orders of the day. Is Tinubu also responsible for that? Will Tinubu force Nigerians to show compassion to one another? Will Tinubu assemble every Nigerian, and then begin to eliminate greed and covetousness from their blood one after the other? From all indications, and realistically, is Tinubu our primary problems or we (Nigerians) are more wicked to one another? With these current trends, would Nigerians allow Tinubu's reforms to manifest? Would they allow the reforms to have positive impacts on our livelihoods? Even if the best president in the world is accorded the opportunity to rule over Nigeria's affairs, would the greed and covetousness of Nigerians allow him to have any positive impact and a lasting legacy? " No one is rich enough to buy yesterday but if you hustle hard, tomorrow could be yours - *Wole Soyinka*.". Sadly , over 95 percent of Nigerians want tomorrow to be theirs without hustling hard. They prefer to hide under the whims and caprices of " bad leadership " to inflict more pains on one another. In a bid to hide under one finger, they continue to blame Tinubu for everything. But, in reality, wouldn't over 99 percent of them embezzle money and siphon the entire national treasury if given the opportunity to become president? Truth be told : even Tinubu, Akpabio, Wike, et al , are saints compared to their critics. But this is festive period. While still felicitating Jesus' birth, Nigerians should remember that, even Jesus told his disciples in John 15 vs 12 that : " this is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you." Nigerians should learn to love one another before complaining about Tinubu not loving them. You cannot be wicked to your own neighbors yet continue to complain that the irunmole in Aso Rock doesn't love you. Nigerians must learn to love one another first. I wish every Nigerian and my readers a blissful Christmas, and a happy new year in advance. See you all next year by God's special grace. (Akinropo Olufemi writes from Federal University Oye-Ekiti.
