Open Letter to President Buhari

Your Excellency

Covid 19 is spreading like wiildfire in the home of your most fanatical supporters - Kano. It is fed by a toxic concoction of incompetent government, misinformation, and scorching poverty.

The state government has:
⁃ failed to plan adequately for covid-19
⁃ failed to investigate an exponential increase in death rate
⁃ failed to develop the state’s healthcare system while the sun was shining
⁃ failed to build a team based on merit to fight covid-19 in Kano
⁃ failed to plan for the lockdown leading to many potential deaths from non-covid reasons due to closure of health facilities and hunger

Your Excellency I fear the situation in Kano is out of control and could take the rest of the country into a disastrous spiral.

We have got to a point that only the declaration of a state of emergency in Kano will rescue the situation. 21 years of personalised government and denudation of the civil service and civil structures has joined forces with Covid-19 in wreaking disaster among our people.

Lagos was given 10billion to aid its efforts. I know money is pledged to Kano but I fear the mindset of the current government would render any grants as good as water down the drain. There simply isn’t a credible plan or a coalition of experts to make the best use of any funds provided.

I do not make this suggestion lightly - like many Nigerians, I grew up under military rule and abhor dictatorship. There is a reason however that our constitution has imbued you with this power. I cannot imagine a graver situation than this or a better reason to use these powers clearly outlined in section 305 of the 1999 constitution.

The Federal government is not without blame for example the under-provision of testing capacity in the North. There clearly is a concerted effort however with NCDC and the task force. I particularly have high regard for the NCDC Chairman Dr Ihekweazu and National Co-Ordinator Dr Sani Aliyu. I believe they are encumbered by the clunky and I dare say corrupt bureaucracy which Mr President your have often alluded to. You must do all you can to free them from the shackles of corrupt and ineffective government so they can help us chart our way out of this crisis.

You famously said if we don’t kill corruption, it will kill Nigeria. In Covid-19, corruption has found a potent comrade-in-arms and the biggest battle will be in Kano.

I implore you to act decisively to save thousands of lives and prevent a socio-economic catastrophe.

Dr Muktar Ahmad

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Saturday said Imo State has recorded its first case of coronavirus (COVID-19).

The centre also said that Nigeria recorded 87 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday including the one recorded in Imo state, a development which has taken the number of active cases of the virus to 925, and the total number of infections recorded so far to 1,182.

Imo Governor, Hope Uzodinma had ordered a complete lockdown of the state as part of measures to prevent the dreaded Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease from entering the state.

The governor ordered that all markets be closed indefinitely and also prohibited all forms of marriage ceremonies.

He also announced the ban on burial and funeral ceremonies and declared that all forms of religious worships in churches and mosques, including crusades and open evangelism, were prohibited.

While giving the latest update on its verified Twitter handle, NCDC said: “One new state (Imo) has reported a confirmed case in the last 24 hours”.

PoliticsFor The Record - Femi Fani-kayode by WorkTheTalk(op): 3:20pm On Apr 26, 2020
I have spoken and written more than anyone else in this country over the last 5 years about the atrocities of herdsmen and Boko Haram and the tyranny, wickedness and incompetence of the Buhari regime.

I have also suffered more, lost more, been humiliated more, been persecuted more, been incarcerated more and been insulted more than most people in the country due to my unrelenting opposition to them.

They have literally taken everything from me and it is only by the grace of God that I am still alive and that I have not been killed. This is just because of my opposition to the Buhari government.

I have also spoken up for the weak, the poor, the oppressed, the deprived, the voiceless and the persecuted across ethnic, religious and party lines. And I have done all these right under the noses of those in power and not from distant shores or foreign lands.

That does not, however, mean that I have lost my humanity. That does not mean that I will relish in anyone’s death. That does not mean that I will dance on the grave of others because death comes to us all and doing so diminishes us as human beings and makes us little better than beasts.

For the last 30 years, I have written and spoken out against the atrocities and the hegemony that the people of the South and the Middle Belt and the Christian community have suffered in the hands of our collective oppressors since 1914 and over the last 106 years.

I have also consistently argued that the people of the South-east were subjected to nothing less than genocide during the civil war and that if we really want peace we must make the necessary amends and atonement for this and they must be treated in an accommodating, reasonable and compassionate way and with far more decency and sensitivity.

PoliticsAbuja, Lagos Hotels Close Doors To Nigerians Returning From Abroad by WorkTheTalk(op): 3:47pm On Apr 25, 2020
Amid preparations for the evacuation of Nigerians abroad due to the raging coronavirus disease across the world, hotels in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory have refused to make their rooms available for the isolation of the returnees when they eventually arrive in the country.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Friday that finding hotels to quarantine the returnees had been a serious challenge because the hotels believed using their facilities to isolate the returnees could damage their brand.

Over 2,000 Nigerians in the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, China and other countries had registered with the Nigerian missions in their country of residence for their evacuation after agreeing to subject themselves to mandatory coronavirus testing and 14-day quarantine on arrival in Abuja or Lagos. Most of the countries where the returnees are coming from have far more cases than Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, the coronavirus had spread to 26 states and the FCT, with 1,095 cases recorded across the country by the NCDC. While 208 patients had been discharged, 32 had died.

The new cases were 80 in Lagos, 21 in Gombe, five in FCT, two each in Zamfara and Edo, and one each in Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna and Sokoto states.

Some countries had equally evacuated their citizens from Nigeria amid the raging virus.

Onyeama had said on Monday that the evacuation would commence next week, noting that two airlines had agreed to bring back the citizens at affordable rates. He noted that the returnees would be brought back in batches of 200 but that their accommodation was the next challenge.

But, while giving an update in Abuja on Friday, the minister said the government was facing the challenge of securing hotels where the returnees could be quarantined.

He explained that he sought the assistance of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, but that the governor could not get hotels in the state to release their premises as isolation centres.

Onyeama said, “The numbers (of Nigerians awaiting evacuation) in the UK alone is about 2,000 and the simple fact of the matter is that we don’t just have the isolation centres, the hospital beds and hotels to accommodate them all.

“We have been looking for hotels in Abuja and Lagos. I spoke this afternoon (Friday) with the governor of Lagos State and it is a real challenge even for the governor to find hotels that are willing to take these people in for 14 days.

“A lot of hotels clearly feel it would damage their brand or it would have some effects on their business. That has been a real problem for us now.”

HealthFears Raised In Iran Of ‘fresh Outbreak’ Of Coronavirus by WorkTheTalk(op): 3:38pm On Apr 25, 2020
Iran’s health officials Saturday raised fears of a “fresh outbreak” of coronavirus cases in their country, which has paid the deadliest price in the Middle East from the pandemic.

As the predominantly Shiite country marked the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, a day later than much of the Muslim world, another 76 fatalities were declared, raising Iran’s official death toll to 5,650.

Iran has in phases since April 11 allowed the reopening of a number of businesses that were closed as part of measures to curb coronavirus (COVID-19).

The spread of the disease has slowed since the start of April, but Alireza Zali, the anti-coronavirus coordinator for the capital, on Saturday criticised “hasty reopenings”.

They could “create new waves of sickness in Tehran and complicate efforts to bring the epidemic under control”, he said, quoted by the official news agency IRNA.

Health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour said Iran has now recorded 89,328 cases of COVID-19, including 1,134 over the past 24 hours, since its first case in February.

The number of Iranian casualties is widely thought to be much higher, however.

Jahanpour reiterated that social distancing and hygiene measures to guard against the novel coronavirus needed to remain in place.

The ministry’s infectious diseases department head, Mohammad Mehdi Gouya, warned of “signs of a fresh outbreak” in provinces such as Gilan and Mazandaran in the north and Qom in central Iran “where we made great efforts to control the epidemic”.

Iran, already weakened by tough US sanctions, has struggled to contain the virus outbreak since reporting its first cases on February 19 — two deaths in the Shiite holy city of Qom.

NYSCCorps Members’ April, May Stipends Not Contributed To COVID-19 Fight – NYSC by WorkTheTalk(op): 3:30pm On Apr 25, 2020
THE NATIONAL Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has assured corps members that their monthly allowances would be paid, saying their April and May stipends have not been contributed to the fight against the dreaded Coronavirus, COVID-19.

Recall that a letter circulating on social media which was purportedly signed by the Scheme’s Director-General, Maj. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, had insinuated that corps members would no longer be able to receive their stipends due to the indefinite suspension placed on monthly biometric clearance in keeping with the rule of social distancing.

However, in a statement issued on Saturday by Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, its Director of Press and Public Relations, the NYSC described the purported letter as handiwork of mischief makers, saying there was no truth in it.

She said, “The attention of Management of the National Youth Service Corps has been drawn to a fake news release, directed at Corps Members, and purported to have been issued by the Director-General, conveying to them that their monthly stipends for April and May would be contributed to the fight against COVID-19.

“A similar mischievous story had earlier been bandied on the social media in February, 2020.

“Management wishes to advise all Corps Members to disregard the poorly written story in its entirety, as there is no iota of truth in it. The story emanated from a fake source.

“It is important to note that payment of monthly stipend for the month of April shall be effected without the usual gathering for Clearance, in keeping with the rule of social distancing.

“It is equally imperative to add that there shall not be clearance for the month of May, 2020. The system shall generate automatic clearance for everyone.”

Adeyemi also assured that the safety and welfare of corps members would be given priority at all times.

HealthCOVID-19 Cases Rise To 28,000 In Africa — WHO by WorkTheTalk(op): 2:21pm On Apr 25, 2020
The UN’s health agency gave the update on its official twitter account @WHOAFRO on Saturday.

“Over 28,000 COVID-19 cases reported on the African continent – with over 8,000 associated recoveries and 1,300 deaths recorded,’’ it said.

The WHO African Region COVID-19 dashboard showed that in sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa suffered the most severe outbreak, while Cameroon and Ghana had more than 2, 500 confirmed cases.

The figures on the dashboard showed that South Africa, Algeria and Cameroon had continued to top the list of countries with the highest reported cases.

It showed that South Africa had 4, 220 cases and 79 deaths followed by Algeria with 3, 127 cases and 415 deaths, while Cameroon had 1,403 confirmed cases with 49 deaths.

According to the dashboard, South Sudan, Sao Tome and Principe, Mauritania and are countries with the lowest confirmed cases in the region.

It showed that South Sudan had the lowest confirmed cases of five reported with zero death.

Mauritania, the dashboard showed, was second country with the lowest confirmed cases with seven reported cases and one death.

Sao Tome and Principe, the third country with the lowest cases, had recorded eight confirmed cases with zero death.

PoliticsFG Explains Why Lockdown Can’t Be Relaxed As Cases Hit 1,095 by WorkTheTalk(op): 2:13pm On Apr 25, 2020
The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, has explained why the lockdown measure should not be relaxed amid efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), had on March 29 ordered a lockdown of the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Ogun states for 14 days to curb COVID-19 spread. Many states had also followed suit.
But as the number of COVID-19 cases increased, the President on April 13 extended the lockdown for 14 more days.

Speaking on Friday at a media briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said it was not yet time to relax the lockdown.

He noted that although the lockdown was having negative effects on the economy as it was impeding Nigerians’ ability to go about their daily activities, he said it was vital to be patient and endure the lockdown further to ensure a safe and healthy society when the economy would be reopened.

He said, “We will eventually exit this stage and restart our normal life but that stage is still a while to come and I ask for your endurance, support and patience. Lots of efforts are going on across the world to find new therapy, to find vaccine.

“Everybody is pushing hard along this direction. We need unprecedented level of caution to continue carrying out the preventive measure that we have advised many times on this platform.

“Many families have not been able to bury their dead, rescheduled their marriages and baptism and everything they are doing. In a way, life is in suspense. Everyone recognises the sacrifice Nigerians have made but we really have to encourage one another to continue to a position where we can relax some of that (lockdown) but until we get to that place, we have to continue in the short term.

“We are working hard to reach a point where we can relax some of these measures but we are not there yet. We ask you to join us to continue this journey with us and amplify these messages that we are giving. We are happy to have the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress here with us today (Friday).”

Ihekweazu added that the citizens must remember that the most vulnerable people were the elderly and people with other illnesses.

“We must protect them. In protecting them, if they are living in the village, leave them there and support them with whatever resources you have. But please, now is not the time to encourage travelling,” he added.
