Do you live in Poland? You sounds like it piece of cake to get a Polish resident permit. What about the language barrier? Abydupank: If the country is in the schengen area, go when you arrive there, travel to Poland, buy Poland work permit for like 700 eur -comes out in 3 weeks, then use the polish work permit to apply for Temporary residence card. Then you are able to come to Nigeria back even before march. Afterwards, you can invite the family to Poland using your temporary residence card.
Thank me later.. |

Ceasefire while Hamas hold on to the hostages? While I don't support war in general, those who call for Ceasefire will be doing same thing Isreal is doing if terrorists kill 1400 people and kidnap 240. Isreal is not against Ceasefire but they stated all hostages must be release before any talk of Ceasefire. I don't think Hamas want Ceasefire cos they would have release all hostages to prove they want the war to stop. Hamas calculations is simple, bomb Isreal, clam victims when Isreal pound. US went to war after 9/11 and any country will go to when a country attack you. FiftyFifty: Israel is winning the war but losing the battle. The longer this brutal aggression takes, the more people turn their back away from Israel. The Pope has called for a cease-fire. More than 120 UN member states have voted for a cease-fire. Arab countries with diplomatic ties with Israel like Egypt, Bahrain, and Jordan are expelling the Israeli ambassadors. Turkey has called its ambassador so have Bolivia, Chile, and Colombia in far away Latin America. And now Mandela's South Africa. The huge number of protesters supporting Palestinians in European capitals like London, Rome, Paris, Vienna, Belfast, and Berlin, among others, is unprecedented. Antisemitism in Europe is now at its highest since 80 years back. The attacks on Jewish synagogues and the defacing of their cemeteries using swastikas in places like Vienna by European Christians is telling. The invasion of Russia's airport by Muslim youths looking for Jews arriving from Tel Aviv was concerning. Jews around the world are now afraid to show their Jewish identity... If this is not concerning, I don't know what is. |

The boom of remote jobs has come and gone to be sincere. Zoom has mandated their employees to show up to the offices at least three times a week or get fired and the same goes to Amazon employees. Pandemic related tech boom and busted and only very few tech companies are hiring while majority are downsizing due low sales. You don't need to quit searching but know it not easy to find remote like it use to be two years ago. TimiRume: I'm not crazy. Are there still real jobs out here
Checking every moment and not seeing anything can be a bit discouraging. Maybe I should just quit searching here, idunno
I'm actually in need of a remote job since ages. Data entry, Customer service personnel, virtual assistant. I'm ready to put in the whole commitment and hard work needed.
Since early this year I've been on this and still yet to land at something substantial. I'm tired of all the redirected links I've followed from here, joined millions of groups and chatted some guys who said they had jobs but turned out to be smoke. Sigh
The Lord is my strength. And the strength of every other person in my shoes. I'd advise everyone to draw closer to God this period cos trust me you can't handle what is coming alone. We all need that divine comfort and faith to not faint in this period.
I need all the waiting powers and patience right now. Sigh

The moment I read "Nigeria produce 90 per cent on her basic needs" I realized no point replying. Even US does not produce 90 per cent of her basic needs. Have a wonderful time out there. yemmit90: You are saying what you know absolute nothing about, you can have your hair cut with 1000 in Lagos, while an average hair cut in US range from $10 - $200. You can have a moderate meal with 1000 in Lagos, you can't have the same quality of food with equivalent of $1 in USA. If we are to use your analogy and the current abnormal exchange rate to dollar, an hair cut in Lagos would goes as high as #70,000, while a moderate plate of food would go for 10,000. Besides, the two countries you gave as example imports more than Nigeria, in 2021 alone, Nigeria export goods worth about $2.2 billion to South Africa, while we only import about $570m from same South Africa. No where in the world you will see BDG operating like what we have in Nigeria. It is the work of financial experts and strictly regulated in developed countries. Have you ever ask yourself why Nigeria is strongest economy in Africa but has one of the weakest currencies in the same Africa?
Contrary to our popular beliefs, Nigeria is not really an import dependent country compare to countries that imports basically everything including foods. Nigeria produce about 90% of her basic needs especially foods. Therefore, the abnormal fall of Naira is not the reflection of our economy but artificial causation by irrational demands. |
Business › Re: FG Moves To Digitise FX Transactions To Punish Naira Speculators by xandy84: 10:55pm On Oct 23, 2023 |
Falling Naira reflect the present state of Nigeria economy. Take $$ out if the equation and ask how much stuff can you buy for 1000 naira? There is BDG everywhere in the world and their currencies still not on free fall. Nigeria economy is import dependant and and as long as that remains, the value of naira will be volatile cos people will always need $$ to import basic stuff. Another example is value of $$ to South Africa rand and Japan yen. 19 rand makes a 1$ while 150 yen makes a dollar. Japan is the 4th largest economy while South Africa is 36th. The value of a currency to a dollar is not the measurement of such currency but what the currency can buy and that takes me back to my first question, how much stuff can you buy with 1000 naira in Lagos? yemmit90: Perhaps these people read our comments on Nairaland or actually know the solution but don't want to do it.
I keep saying this since last year, falling of Naira is not a reflection of our economy but the work of ignorant saboteurs who treat dollar like gold they can keep for future gain.
The solution is straightforward, create an app or channel that importers, foreign students, and others who actually needed dollar would be coverting their naira at official rate. Do away with BDG withiout looking back.
Why would dollar be controlling our economy when we are not even among top ten countries with highest importer of foreign goods. Government should totally ban locally uses of dollar for good. |
Business › Re: FG Moves To Digitise FX Transactions To Punish Naira Speculators by xandy84: 10:42pm On Oct 23, 2023 |
The value of a currency is not measured in exchange to $ but what the currency can buy. What can a 1000 naira buy? Speculation and greed drive the stock market either in Lagos or New York. Investors speculate if a particular stock value will go up in future and invest while the price is low, and when it goes up, you make profit. You are not going to make money in your investment if you do not speculate. People speculate when the price of an items is volatile. People speculate naira will fall cos the indicator suggested and convert their naira to $$ to be safer and that bring about more demand to $$ and increases in demand always bump the price up. Government trying to punish speculators is like US government trying to send Elon Musk or Satoshi Nakamito to jail cos he found Tesla or Bitcoin. Tunubu administration has no iota of ways to cushion the double effects of floating the naira and removing the subsidy at same time the effect just begin. The idea of going after parallel market operators will further increase demand of $$ and send naira to tailspin. Naira need help now to stabilize it or 2000 to a $$ before January. Teenaira: Every sensible person will know that the exchange rate of $ to Naira can not be N1200 to a dollar. What we have currently is pure speculations and I will sincerely like government to hit these criminals real hard. However, statement like the one coming from government now will be a subtle warning to these speculators creating artificial demand for dollar. There is no project the country is engaged in that requires the kind of dollars we consume daily currently. Government, either through the CBN or minister of finance should continue to let them know that government will use the big stick without any notice. That is likely going to make some of them stop the round tripping while the die hard may be caught in the act. |

Education › Re: Crisis Looms In Varsities Over Mass Exodus Of Lecturers by xandy84: 3:14pm On Oct 05, 2023 |
Our universites are underfunded and that needs to change ASAP. The government needs to increase funding and the students need to bear greater burden too. Our universites needs to focus resources for optimal usage. Some discipline need to be phase out. Our lecturers leaving Nigeria universites has nothing to do with structures. It has everything to do with better life. Nigeria is a hard place to survive and people will their chances the first time asking. Teaching jobs rank among the lowest paid job even in America. An average salary of a teacher with masters degree in Virgina is $45k while a diesel mechanic without high school diploma makes $55k easy. I teach in community College in Virginia and I had to leave cos the pay socks. The truth we need to tell ourselves is government need to do more, students/parents need to do more and our universites administrators need to do more by judicious spending resources and cut out waste cos government does not have limitless resources. nairalanda1: Even then, our universities are underfunded, and lecturers are leaving our unis to the same universites that may not be 'up to Unilag status' because the pay is better, and crucially they have access to better research facilities and connections.
We got to tell our selves some hard truths. |
Education › Re: Crisis Looms In Varsities Over Mass Exodus Of Lecturers by xandy84: 2:52pm On Oct 05, 2023 |
Like I said earlier, you have valid points but the term "world class" is subjective. I graduated from Unilag and I presently live in an area that has 3 universites. Namely, ODU, NSU and EVMS in Virginia. These universites are considered top notch but add all these universites together in term of structure, they are below Unilag. Our educational institutions need urgent financial interventions but still not the worse and our best will compare and compete with the so called world class universites in US and UK. I used to live few miles down the road from Chicago state university. CSU is not bigger, not finer, does not have a better structures than Unilag. That is a fact nairalanda1: Even then, I still stand by my points.
Many Nigerians come and moan about how bad their universites are, and then when told of the financial and other implications to bring them up to scratch, they start shouting poverty.
It is either we want world class, or we accept our bad universities as they are and stop complaining. |
Education › Re: Crisis Looms In Varsities Over Mass Exodus Of Lecturers by xandy84: 2:04pm On Oct 05, 2023 |
You stated valid points but you need to compare oranges to oranges and not apples. Not every universities has the financial strength of Cambridge or Harvard in US or UK. Our universites need financial interventions seriously but money does not solve all problems. Our universites need to be restructure that bring the best out of it. Some degrees has outlived their functions and any money on such degree is a waste. Imagine UNILAG offering Russion language as a degree? Even Russians does not study their own language. nairalanda1:

1.This shows that there has been 8 years of disaster, and the effects of corruption. I have to mention this
2.It also shows the effect of low fees, low fees and did I say low fees and low income.
In 2018, the then VC of ABU Zaria gave a speech. In the speech, he made two comments that I am going to list below
1.His overhead costs for the previous year were 600 million naira. Government gave him 120 million. Where is he going to find the remainder of the money
2.If you want Cambridge level universities, pay Cambridge level fees.
Now, you are free to insult, abuse, mock, call me insensitive, call me the son of a canine, etc.
But our universites are and always have been BROKE. And underfunded. As a result, we cannot do high quality research, pay high quality salaries, and pay for high quality facilites. The hostels and living accomodation are shanties, and the staff accomodation is no better either( by the late 1980's, staff living in university accomodation had to pay for repairs out of their pocket, because the unis had no money)
Back to ABU. ABU's budget was N25 billion naira or 26 million pounds.. Cambridge uni.. 2 billion pounds with an endowment of 9 billion pounds.
Let that sink in.
Let that sink in.
And yet, many people come here and expect our universites to be like Cambridge on such small fees. Expect them to conduct world class research on such small fees.
Nigerians, make we think.
We have these choices.
1.We can raise fees, or let the unis set fees...so that they can earn money and pay for improvements, and retain staff..
2.We can do as Denmark does and pay for free education with half our annual income...that is everyone from Dangote and Ned to the beggar on the street.
3.Or we can pretend university is cheap, and continue to lose staff numbers, and lose retention of people.
It goes beyond APC, PDP, and LP....because this headline...awas the same headline in the 1980's 1990's 20000's and even as recently as 10-15 years ago. University lecturers have been japaing for DECADES. I mean for decades. We don't have enough lecturers, and enough spaces....because we think that cambridge level education costs less than N20000 a year, when it is actually more than 2 million.
But we got to let the poor breathe, eh? |

Any financial crime over a $1k is a felony and you're on automatic deportable when you commit a felony. Any felonies committed before you become a citizen will make you deportable either you're an asylum holder or permanent resident. There are cases of immigration suing people who are already a citizen trying to take their citizens away cos they committed a crime while applying for their citizenship. Having lived in US for 10 uninterrupted years, I can tell you OP was not biased and counter your 5 points. 1. Human dignity: true soldiers and politicians do anyhow but there are gangs in US and UK too. I used to live in Chicago and Bariga and I can tell you that you have a higher chances of getting killed in US than Nigeria. 2. You're right about something to do but doing something does not translate into doing some meaningful. Majority of immigrants start working in group home even as a masters degree holder. 3. While you don't need to know anyone to get a job, there are still instances you need to know people to get a job even in US though rear 4. There is nothing like flat structure. Average Americans can't afford to buy a new car. Even us s cars takes years to pay it off. 5. Good infastructure is a plus abroad but don't confused good healthcare to it availability. There are millions of Americans that has no healthcare and are one sickness to bankruptcy. Note: while US, UK, EU are better than Nigeria, not all abroad are better. Traveling to Belize, Panama etc in search of a greener pasture is literally like hustling backward. Jeboy: I think the OP is biased in his write up in the sense that it is one-sided and made to instill fear in japaa adventure.
In as much as you dont smuggle your way abroad illegally, you are assured of the following: 1)Human Dignity. (no soldier or politician is gonna treat you like an animal because of your status or background. We see this everyday here0 2) There is something for you to do, wether it is a professionally skilled job or labour. You are assured of your basic life if u aint lazy. In Nigeria some graduates have been unemployed for 5 to 7 yrs (can you beat that?) 3) You dont need to know anybody to get anything legal that is your right. (Here ministry jobs, NDA, Govt contract , all are connections) 4) Flat structure. Whether you are a gateman, CEO, Banker or carpenter, everybody level is flat. A cleaner can afford a new car with credits and repay after 5 years. Who dash monkey banana for 9ja. 5) Access to good infrastructure like health, education, good roads, security, power, societal decorum, rule of law etc
However, what the op should have warned people about are the followings. 1. Abroad life is not cheap. The rent I am paying for my wife as a student per month is almost a year and half rent in our Nigeria house. 2. Abroad life you earn and give to the system via tax, you try to evade tax you go to jail 3. Abroad life does not support your adulterous lifestyle like you do in Nigeria 4. Abroad life does not give you absolute control over your kids 5. Abroad life does not give you preference as a man over your wife as we do traditionally in Nigeria, infact women and children are protected than men . 6. You dont have so much social life in abroad life cos every moment counts (your bill is running so no time for idling like 9ja) 7. You cannot easily get help from family and friends like Nigeria so all man for himself.
For me, after spending almost 10m in the relocation of my wife, I dont have regrets cos like three employers have mailed me to let them know when I land about jobs thing and I can see they pay more than 10x what I earn in Nigeria. |

Which state do you practice law? gforce5: I agree that it is a big risk for people with a career to sacrifice everything in the name of Japa and as an Immigration lawyer, I have advised clients to think clearly before Japaing. However, the middle and upper middle career oriented are leaving the country not because of money but because of the quality of living in the country. No matter how one disguises it, the quality of living in Nigeria is very low. No light, no decent water, no good roads and a non-existent educational sector. The middle class have looked at the aforementioned issues and have concluded that Nigeria is not a suitable environment to raise their children.
As for those who are at an advanced age, they shouldn't try it. Immigration is a young person's hustle. Imagine graduating with 2.1 and jobless for years, you might be frustrated to even consider moving to Somalia but logic should prevail cos some countries are worse off than Nigeria and Japa crew should always do their research. jiggar: Nice write-up.
I just like the way you presented your points.
You are just trying to help others who are planning to japa, not to be too fixated on achieving financial freedom immediately, once they finally japa.
All that you said, are all facts. It's just that, African leaders are driving this japa syndrome at an astronomical rate, no thanks to their desire to keep looting the nation's treasury.
This is 2023, and yet, no black nation can lift up its head and shoulders and say, we are advancing both in human capital and IOT indices.
However, hope with your experiences and travels, you (or your folks) can, if possible, sometime in the future, create a small business back home to employ your fellow citizens?
At least, that way, you will be helping to reduce the unemployment figures in the country. |

I absolutely agreed with all you said but having lived abroad for 10 years, I still believed some people are not good candidates to Japa. First, people who are established in Nigeria. Why would someone who have a career, stable job and a house sell everything and move abroad? They are right about quadrupling their income but when you factor tax and bills, they will end up at ground zero at the end of the month. The second type of people that should NEVER try Japa are people who are advance in age. Why should a retired person take his gratitude, sell his house and move to US thinking miracles who somehow happen? I know a very distant cousin who sell his property, add his pension and moved to US in his late 60's. He has stroke and dementia and still has to work cos he has not work long enough to qualify for social security income and neither is he a citizen. Older people, don't try it. You will definitely regret it. Younger, unemployed, underemployed should by all means leave Niaja for real. The situation is hopeless back home and it can't get worse as long as you do not Japa to countries that are worse off compare to Nigeria. Do your research, invest time and plan before you move is always my advice. gforce5: Mimi, I understand that you are giving your opinion based on your personal experience abroad. I spent a quarter of my life abroad before moving back to Nigeria so i know the downsides of living in a white man's country. However, you do not understand why Nigerians are desperate to leave the country by any means necessary as you don't live in Nigeria and you aren't experiencing the HELL so many people are going through in this country. So many people are disillusioned with the state of the country. We are talking about a country that is only designed for only the rich to thrive. The poor do not have any chance. That is why prostitution, yahoo, drugs, rituals and fraud have become the norm.
A lot of young people are disenfranchised with the system. The middle class has been wiped out. You are either rich or poor. Education has now become the right for only the rich. Many individuals have seen their standard of living drop in by 80% in the past 10 years. The list of problems is endless. I also assume that you probably have a second passport so you don't understand what the average Nigerian goes through when they travel abroad for different reasons. Just come and experience living in Nigeria for 3 months. Then you will understand why people want to Japa by force. |

Interesting question. Racism is secondary. Financial gain is the major cause of high rate of recidivism. Most prisons in own by private cooperations who charges government to house inmate and the more inmate, the more profitable. There is a cooperation that built prison in Virginia and they have a clause on their contract with state the State of Virginia must pay if it can't provide inmate to their jail. If a state will pay for an empty jail, they don't have incentives to keep people out of jail. There was a case of a dude that died in jail for stealing $5 gum in 7/11 years ago. Cooperations donate billions for elections, politicians vote on legislations that favor cooperations thru their lobbying agencies. Federal prison system is even worse. The cheapest way to get a gender reassigned surgery is to buy a ticket to Jamaica, pick a gram of cocaine on your way back, get arrested and plead guilty to a six month prison and sue the government to provide money for your surgery. Why? Cos cooperations pressure policians to pass legislations that enforce free medical procedures to inmates while millions of hard working Americans goes without health insurance. Bop spend almost $2 million to house a particular lady for 20 years due to major illness she has and when she was interviewed at the end of her sentence, she said she will be back withing 48 hours cos she will die before a month outside due to her medical conditions. Only very few hospitals will do major procedure on you without insurance. They will put a bandage and give you aspirin and down the road while inmate gets a gender reassigned surgery from male to female, 2 years later, he found Jesus and wish to go back to his primary gender... The system is rotten IjeBos: You're not wrong. I almost moved to the Lagos pre pandemic. So, yeah at a certain level value of life in Lagos can be better. And you're not wrong about post conviction. But with a US passport you can leave, build again and come back.

Going to jail is no fun and after you served your time, opportunities become rear at least 7 years after end of your sentence and that is the reason most criminals goes back to the life of crime. I wrote one my my masters degree paper on compariing rate of recidivism in America and Norway. The rate of recidivism in Norway is 20 per cent while America is 60 percent and as a foreigner who has no family support, your chances of survival is even slimmer. Think about it, who get to house you, feed you, cloth you when you out of prison knowing you ain't going to get a job anytime soon. Everybody will run from you, even your brother phone number will be disconnected ASAP. IjeBos: True, but all things being equal, better to be a US citizen than not when dealing with the exact same situation. Like in this situation, with a US citizenship, the guy would at least be able to stay in the US with his children. And though he would be a felon, if he really wanted to he could find opportunities. But, because he's not a citizen he'll most likely be deported. |

You're right but things has changed lately. You will be deported if you go to federal prison for a felony. That is automatic. State prison depend on the State. Some State will not report non citizen to ICE and will just release you after the end of your sentence but the guy in question was sentenced to federal prison and homeland security prosecute his case. People who know him should have advise him to run when he was on pre-trial release cos Naija better pass jail oo. Empiree: You may respond to people without being aggressive in your responses. Don't scare people away, buddy.
You are free to deport him if you can. Be gentle. Some people posted simple responses to bait someone like you. So be humble my friend.
Yes, his crime is a felony. This post doesn't have enough information. There might be other conditions in his sentence we may not know about. Yes, he's vulnerable to deportation in as much he's not a citizen. You should also consider state laws which are vary. We don't have information about which state he was convicted.
So when I said his sentence was not up to 10 years I knew what I was talking about. Sometimes the law says felony conviction of non-US citizen leads to deportation but this is not always the case. He will have a lawyer to fight it right?.
So be calm and don't be hard on people the way you responded to me. You don't know where I live and you automatically assumed I never got US visa. Smh
13 years ago in New York, Indian student with green card was convicted of murder which he was not directly responsible for but his words were directly linked to the victim killing himself.
He was sentenced to almost 2 years which he already served 1 year during investigation and trial. At his sentencing, his mother pleaded to politicians to have his sentence reduced. Jury said his sentence was over 10 years which automatically attracted deported after release. But after so much pleading, jury sentenced him to 18 months or so.
The news media said the NY- state law says, sentence of 10yrs or more is deportation after release and they said the boy was lucky. So be gentle when you reply to people. Your replies are very harsh my dear.
I knew this guy's vulnerable to deportation but do I need to scare people here?. Do I need to scare his friend that posted this?. Let's be gentle and be hopeful that he is not removed after he served his term.
Thank you |

Even with US citizenship, after leaving prison, it's tough to get your life back in track. Nobody wants to employ someone just get out of jail and without job to pay your bills, person life go spiral out of control quickly. America has high rate of recidivism because the system never forgive even when you pay your dues to the society. IjeBos: Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
But there is a lesson here. If you can get your US citizenship, get it done. Don't procrastinate esp. since it doesn't effect your Nigerian citizenship. You, never know what happens in life. And you'd rather be facing it with the protections of a US citizenship than not. |

No Sir. That is now America justice system works. Prosecutor do not deport. ICE deport people from America. Once you're sentence to a prison, the prison official will inform ICE when a non citizen arrive and ICE will put a detainer on your name. The detainer prevent the prison from releasing you after you complete your sentence. ICE will pick you up from prison the day of your release and transfer you to ICE holding prison waiting for deportation. They wait because it's cheaper to deport people in groups. They charter a plane, load people going to countries closer to each other like Ghana, Nigeria etc and off they go. Case closed. YesDaddyTill203: He will be deported. There is no exception unless it was part of a deal (this rarely happens) where the prosecution agreed not to deport him. He will be sent to a federal deportation prison and deported once he's done with his prison sentence. |

There are limited job opportunities in even US that is the largest economy in the world. Between Meta and Twitter, they have fired close to 50k people in less than 2 years. Those are professional. I stays in Virginia and a company called STIHL just fired 1200 people 2 days ago. Need for goods and services in slow and this will definitely reduce demand for employees either white, blue or black collar jobs. Japa should be encourage but who be immigrant might just face the reality things are slow are they need to take their time to build their desire dream. Mindlog: There are no limited job opportunities if you are skilled in the fields they have shortage in, I am on my second UK skilled worker visa as I switched from my first job.
I went for a blood test in a teaching hospital facility recently, I saw a staff who worked there and knew he was definitely Nigerian, I briefly chatted with him and did check him out on LinkedIn, finding out he was working as a Medical Laboratory Assistant at the hospital where he started working in April and was sponsored from Nigeria by the hospital and he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science/Research and Allied Professions from Ebonyi State University.
If you are highly skilled and it is in demand in the UK, japa! |
