Nicotinekills:So true! Chance do happen once in a while thereby promoting randomness in the affairs of men. |
Last night, a disturbing security footage unsettled me deeply. I could not push it aside. It reminded me that beneath all the violence we see today, there is a bigger national question we are still refusing to answer. For me, the issue is not truly about tribe or religion. What I see is a deep struggle for recognition, support and inclusion from the central government. Some years ago, most of the troubling reports we heard were from the South South region. We saw cases of kidnapping of expatriates and destruction of pipelines, and the whole country felt the impact. Nigeria was placed in a negative light internationally because those attacks affected the national economy directly. That period passed, and today the disturbing reports are coming from some parts of the North. We see attacks on communities, abductions of school children and situations where people are killed and cattle are taken away. At times, these incidents create the impression that certain groups are being targeted, especially when we see attacks happen inside places of worship. Yet there are other cases where whole communities are affected without any religious pattern. All these incidents create fear, pain and confusion, but for me they are still a mask covering an underlying message. What took place in the South South is not the same as what is happening in the North. The reasons and methods differ, yet when you look at the bigger picture, a clear pattern appears. A region is acting out because it wants attention, support and inclusion. We saw something similar during the Niger Delta crisis, even though the motives were different. Looking at the North today, many believe that some powerful individuals in government support these groups. There may be truth in that, but truth alone cannot solve the problem. If we want to preserve national stability, the matter has to be handled with care. Some elites will not fold their hands and watch their own young men wiped out by soldiers. And it is not possible to walk into government offices, arrest the suspected sponsors and place them in prison. Doing that will create disorder and division. So the strategy used in the Niger Delta may have to be considered here as well. The Presidential Amnesty Programme should be extended to these young men. Not because their actions are justified but because national peace sometimes requires a practical solution. The aim is to remove the incentive for violence by giving them a pathway into empowerment and inclusion. Once the federal government steps in directly and provides real opportunities, the tension will reduce and lives will be protected. That is where I am coming from when I look at this whole situation. #Nigeria #NationalPeace #FederalResponsibility #Governance

Quidax and Luno, two popular crypto exchanges, reportedly began speaking to the SEC in October 2023, a source familiar with the talks told TechCabal. Luno told TechCabal that it does not comment on discussions or potential discussions with regulatory authorities. Quidax declined to comment for this story. Another crypto company reportedly in talks with regulators is Yellow Card. “We have not made any public moves yet, but it is in the process,” said one person with knowledge of the company’s business. Last week, Yellow Card announced a partnership with American crypto exchange platform Coinbase that will allow Nigerians and people in 19 other African countries to use Coinbase’s wallet, purchase stablecoin (USDC), make remittances, save, and do everyday commerce on the platform. https://techcabal.com/2024/01/23/exclusive-two-crypto-startups-have-applied-for-sec-licence/

I read through a thread here on nairaland about unfriendly countries listed by Russia. What caught my attention was the sanction clause placed by russian government to the underlisted countries. The Government allowed Russian citizens and companies, the state itself, its regions and municipalities that have obligations in foreign currency to foreign creditors from the list of unfriendly countries to pay back their debts in rubles. For that, a debtor may ask a Russian bank to create a special ruble account "C" in the name of a foreign creditor and transfer payments to it in ruble equivalent at the exchange rate of the central bank on the day of payment Then I wondered : What if russia decides to peg the daily exchange rate of any debtors country's currency to russian rubles at e.g $500 to 1 rubles on the day of payment. Them say wahala be like wetin again? Meanwhile Affected countries are; Albania, Andorra, Australia, Great Britain, including Jersey, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Gibraltar, EU member states, Iceland, Canada, Liechtenstein, Micronesia, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, San Marino, North Macedonia, Singapore, US, Taiwan, Ukraine, Montenegro, Switzerland, and Japan https://www.nairaland.com/7018864/russia-issues-list-unfriendly-countries |

The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, has revealed proposals to require smartphones, tablets headphones, and other electronics makers to include a standard USB-C charging connector on their products. This move is likely to impact Apple the most because the company uses its proprietary lightning connector rather than the USB-C connector adopted by most of its competitors. The new regulation aims to reduce waste and make life simpler for customers by allowing them to charge numerous devices with a single charger. Customers will be able to purchase new smartphones without a charger as part of the proposal. Other smartphone manufacturers, such as Samsung and Huawei, have included USB-C connectors in some of their current models, although many of their older models still retain micro-USB ports. The proposal is part of a revised Radio Equipment Directive that must be approved by the European Parliament before becoming law. Device manufacturers will have two years to comply with the new regulations if the plan is passed into law. https://nairametrics.com/2021/09/24/eu-plans-to-make-usb-c-a-common-charger-mandatory-for-all-devices-including-apple-iphones/

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has stated that the only rate he recognises is the I&E window rate, citing that the black market rate is fixed by illegal forex operators. The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele disclosed this during the Monetary Policy Council meeting which was held today. Emefiele stated this in response to a question on his views on BDCs. He said “Nigeria was the only country where the Central bank sells foreign exchange from their reserves to the BDC operators. The question we ask ourselves is why it took us so long to ban their operation.” The governor went further to state that the only recognised rate is the I&E Window rate. He said, “The only exchange rate I can recognise today is the I&E window rate, which is the rate we expect everyone that wishes to procure foreign exchange to use.” don’t recognise that there are any other rates in the market,” he added. What this means The response of the CBN governor shows that the government would not shift its resolve and lift the ban on the sale of FX to BDC operators anytime soon as many had expected. Furthermore, the CBN once again, publicly expressed its disregard for the black market rates and operations as it brought the operations of online foreign exchange rate websites such as abokiFX to question. https://nairametrics.com/2021/09/17/cbn-governor-shatters-bdc-operators-hope-of-ban-reversal/
