geektrovert: Aside.
@Jarus and other economists in the house. Something that has been bothering my mind.
In the current market conditions of Nigeria nowadays, is it better to play in the premium segment or mass market?
I mean, some brands play premium (their earnings model is based on higher brand value and higher GM - gross margin e.g Cocacola, Pampers), while others play to the volume (lower GM, but higher volume e.g. indomie, molfix, Bigi Cola)
What's your take on this guys? (Sorry I'm putting it on this thread) It is very difficult to sit on an Armchair and assume one business model is better than the other. Both the premium segment and mass-market can thrive depending on two factors. Strategy and Execution. I'd use the entertainment industry as an example. Purchasing power is low, but every weekend night from Thursday, clubs are almost full from Mainland to Island[Using Lagos as an example]. A bottle of Jack Daniel or Hennesey VS[Very Special] goes for 25-35k while Hennesey VSOP[Very special old pale] can sell for 50-65k depending on the location and the orders come in droves. Not to talk of champagne such as Dom Perignon, Ace of Spades, Moet Et Chandon....... etc. If you go to some other open-air gardens or joints, these same drinks sell at 25-60% below the club's prices and yet the orders are also coming in droves. And coming in last is our beer parlors that sell drinks at pump price . They also have their customers swarming like bees on a weekend night. In strategy, this is known as differentiation So in considering making a choice, of business model, the strategy is important. You have to understand your market segment, know their size, and most importantly make decisions on what services or products not to offer. So whether your strategy is differentiation or cost leadership, execution is what makes you thrive amongst the competition. |

Education › Re: A Hotel Or An Hotel, Which One Is Correct? by xpizzy(m): 8:47am On Mar 20, 2019 |
Ufedolove: You should use the term "a hotel."
The English language is said to be one of the most difficult ones worldwide to learn. This is most likely because there are almost as many exceptions as there are grammar rules. Just when you manage to learn one rule, you find that the rule "doesn't always apply." For example, the word "an" normally precedes any words that begin with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) such as "an orange," "an umbrella" or "an apple."
This rule is fairly straightforward and easy to remember until you come to words beginning with the letter h. What word should you use if you want to write a word such as "hotel?"
Using Vowel Sounds
A very easy way to determine if you should use "an" or "a" before a letter beginning with h is to pronounce the word to see how it sounds. If you don't pronounce the letter h such as in the words "hour" or "honest", you would use the word "an". For example, "an hour" or "an honest man."
If you do pronounce the letter h at the beginning of the word such as "hair" or "happy," you should use the letter "a" before it. For example, "a hair" or "a happy girl."
An Exception To The Exception
After reading this, you probably think you have mastered the use of "a" or "an" with words beginning with h. For example, you can now write the words "a hospital" or "an heir" with confidence. You may wonder why people find this particular rule so difficult.
Well, to make matters more confusing, there is another exception to the above exception. If the accent of a word that begins with h falls on the second syllable, you would use the word "a" instead of "an." For example, "an historical event." Although this is grammatically correct, many people writers continue to use "a historical event."
Given the above rules and exceptions, the answer to our initial question is that you should use the term "a hotel." In response to the bolded, I strongly disagree, in this part of the world, we have been taught about vowels and consonants instead of Vowel sounds or consonant sounds. This is why University carries "a" and not "an" despite starting with a vowel. This is because the "You" sounds in University is a consonant sound. So the rule to "a" or "an" is applicable to sounds not necessarily the alphabet that starts the word. For Instance, you can say "An SMS" this is because SMS carries "ES" sound. |

I still believe you are optimistic, recall that during trump vs clinton, there was a tape of him saying nasty things about women and they tried to use it against him but it backfired, Macron vs Marie Le pen - She was Just attacking his personality without making any point and it backfired, attacking a person doesn't work that much, after a while people will perceive it as a distraction. Again from a psychological angle, there is nothing like controlling perception, you can influence, but control that is gargantuan feat. Plus I hope you listened to Banky W? on Tedx talk? Atiku and Buhari were together 4 years ago, you know what that means? PDP=APC APC=PDP, so rather than fighting against other people we need to shift the narratives. The Buhari and Atiku you are fighting for are Ornithological species of the same plumage. Until we start having political ideology, a decentralised federal government and regional system of government, you will continue to see the same faces in politics. domaintraderng: That is a fair point, however, voter enthusiasm is very important, particularly at the margins.
Atiku's campaign relies on young people who are disproportionately connected to the internet. Controlling thier perceptions can cause them to transmit the implanted conceptions to parents.
Combine this with Whatsapp broadcasts and you can create a generalized mood that is very infectious.
Placing whatever is on the websites in the hands of recruited OAPs to broadcast the contents via radio is also an option. That will reach the population that is not, in fact, online.
They key is to bombard the voting population from all sides and by doing so, change the way they view the candidate in question. |
