NYSC / Herdsmen Killings: NYSC To Redeploy Corps Members by Yarnvibes(f): 10:39am On Jan 31, 2018
The National Youth Service Corps has announced that the scheme will redeploy any corps member, who feels unsafe in states harboured by Fulani herdsmen.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, said this on Tuesday during the inspection of the NYSC Orientation Camp in Ede, Osun.

The DG, who was represented by the Director, General Service, Alhaji Abdulrasak Salaw, said this in an interview with journalists after the inspection.

He said, “all of us must work together to ensure that the crisis is resolved. We cannot risk the lives of corps members in Benue and that is why the NYSC orientation camp was relocated from Benue to Kogi State.

“Ordinarily, Kogi and Taraba States corps members were supposed to camp in Benue State but because of this crisis, they were moved to Kogi State.

“During the course of the orientation programme, any corps member that writes that he or she is not secured in that place, we will look into it and redeploy such corps members to another state.

“We may not redeploy them to the state they want but we will relocate them. We cannot keep them in a place where they feel their security is threatened.”

Religion / Top 10 Hilarious Names Of Nigerian Churches (photos) by Yarnvibes(f): 5:46pm On Jan 30, 2018
In all times religion has been considered to be a delicate and sensitive issue. Wars were fought in the name of God? Many discussions or hopeless quarrels have broken out among groups and individuals around the world. But now in the 21st century in the world of democracy and total tolerance, you can believe in any god or religion you want or can find. In Nigeria, there are various churches you can choose to attend and some of them are truly unique.

You will not be able to find any kind of judgment or mockery reading this. We all remember that each of us has the right to believe and do everything he thinks is right. In the basic 10 principles of public (international) law, it is called the right for freedom of speech and religion. That is probably why we have found so many churches in Nigeria which, to put it mildly, are not formatted. Frankly speaking, there are lots of hilarious names of churches in Nigeria. Of course, we cannot overview all of them, but let`s say top 10 funny names of churches in Nigeria.

Top 10 funny names of churches in Nigeria

1. Run For Your Life Ministry

Is this church created only for runners or for some extreme believers who prefer living fast and furious? So it is a huge field for thinking about the name of this church. But I am honestly not sure whether this is a good way to attract visitors.

2. Jesus Elections Ministries
If you are still looking for your place under the sun and not sure what to do with your life, set up a church in Nigeria with any hilarious name you are only capable of making up. Yes! This one you can take as an example. Success is guaranteed!

3. Helicopter of Christ ministry
By the way how much does the ticket cost? Is it available for everyone? So if you are looking for any extreme spiritual or psychotherapy, join this absolutely unique church. Sounds exciting, but hopelessly ridiculous.

4. Mountain of Swallowing Problems Interdenominational Prayer Ministry
I like the word “interdenominational”. It is not only long to pronounce but also means incredible flexibility that accepts any branch of the religion. So from transport, we are slowly coming to the geographical spots. Mountain, island, iceberg, what is the next one? Why did I mention everything except of swallowing problems? I tried to divert your attention because in this case there is no adequate reaction than laughter.

5. Barking Methodist church
And there is one more miracle in the world – Barking Methodist church. I can hardly imagine what the fellows of this church are doing while they are praying. Barking and howling? A rhetorical question, no answer, please.

6. The Atomic Bomb Bible Brigade Ministry
God knows what the authors meant by this name. Is it a military base or any extremist group? It sounds too aggressive as for a peaceful church. But if the Barking church and Swallowing problems one exist in this dark world, why not then?

7. Laboratory Church of God
A blow below the belt for skeptics – it turns out scientifically confirmed that God exists. No more doubts anymore! Go to this church and get all proofs you need. But wait, God expects you to believe on the word. So it is up to you who to follow.

8. NTA Channel Jesus
Well, what can I say? We are living in the world of intercommunication. And the best way to proclaim the word of God is better to do through a media tool. That is why after the transport, and mountain, the God has decided to get a channel. Well-done!

9. How to Identify a Witch
Yes, we promote a hi-tech society where even the God has an own channel. But at the same time some of our people are still obsessed with the Middle Ages romance, the idea of inquisition and the witch hunting. If you are in the latter group, join this church.

10. Who are you to Jesus Ministry
The last but not the least question is who are you to Jesus? Think about that or you had better visit this church and maybe the answer will come to you in there.

Well, I admit that there is too much sarcasm here. Who knows what people are taught in such churches. Are good or bad people leading such meetings? But as it is said above, no judgment, right. And what is your opinion about such funny names of churches in Nigeria?

The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, has charged corps members to embrace the option of establishing small or medium scale businesses after their service year instead of searching for white collar jobs.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Director Press and Public Relations Unit of the scheme, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, he gave the charge while addressing the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Stream Two Corps members deployed to Gombe, Nasarawa and Plateau states.

He said there were numerous opportunities of becoming self-employed through the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme.

He reminded the corps members that the NYSC management has gone into partnership with some financial institutions including Bank of Industry, Central Bank and others, that are ready to give loans to interested corps members with good business proposals.

“There is no job out there and l don’t want anyone of you to be jobless after your service year. Try and embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme of the NYSC”, he said.

Crime / Court Orders Samuel Olajide Afolayan To Pay N9m To Herdsman For Seizing 42 Cows by Yarnvibes(f): 6:41am On Jan 28, 2018
Court orders Afolayan, ex-navy chief, to pay N9m to herdsman for seizing 42 cows

An Ilorin High Court has ordered a retired navy chief, Vice- Admiral Samuel Olajide Afolayan, to pay N9 million being the cost of damages and for detaining 42 cows belonging to a Fulani herdsman, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, illegally and unconstitutionally.

The verdict, delivered on January 9, 2018, indicated that the retired admiral was also ordered to pay N500,000 for each day of default of the judgement debt.
Justice Adeyinka Sikiru Oyinloye gave the judgment in suit NO.KWS/83M/2017.

The herdsman, Abdullahi, had sought the declaration of the court that the seizure and/or detention of his 60 cows by the respondent was bizarre, unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional.

He also sought the respondent’s unconditionally release of the cows with immediate effect, and another order that the respondent should tender unreserved apology to be published in two national dailies within two weeks of the judgment..

N10m was demanded by the applicant.

According to him, security guards attached to Afolayan had accosted his son outside the farm of the respondent in Obo-Ile in Ekiti local government area of Kwara State and pointed gun at him while he was rearing his cows on May 17 2017 and seized the 60 cows.

According to him, despite frantic efforts to get the cows back, the respondent held on to them, insisting that N5m had to be paid to get them back.

Afolayan in his defence, told the court that the cows were led into his farm on the said day and destroyed his cassava and maize farm worth N2.5m while the applicant burnt his cassava processing plant which made him to insist that he must pay for the losses estimated at N15m, which was later reduced to N5m after pleas.

While delivering his judgment, Justice Oyinloye said though the applicant claimed 60 cows were involved, the respondent admitted seizing only 42.

Education / Ijebu-ode Grammar School Alumni To Build N250m ICT Centre by Yarnvibes(f): 11:32am On Jan 26, 2018
The Old Students Association of Ijebu-Ode Grammar School (JOGSOBA) is set to construct a N250 million naira Information and Communication Technology and cafeteria for their alma mater.

This was disclosed by the National President of the association, Engr. Ebenezer Osoba, at a news conference to herald the celebration of the school 105th Founder’s Day, held at the secretariat of the association in Ijebu -Ode.

Osoba flanked by its vice/chairman of the 105th celebration, Chief Segun Timi and the National Public Relation Officer, Gbenga Omilola, said the project was conceived to enhance effective teaching and learning of ICT.

He said that the centre on completion would comfortably seat 200 students with modern ICT equipment while the cafeteria accommodates 750 people.

Osoba noted that JOGSOBA in the years past had continued to provide the necessary infrastructure for the development of the school, saying that the rationale behind this gesture was to make the products of the school more relevant to the development of the country.

He said the school which is the oldest secondary school in Ijebuland, had produced many great Nigerians such as the former United Nations Secretary-General, Prof. Adebayo Adedeji, the current High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Justice Olusola Oguntade, late Ambassadors Olu Adeniji and Gbenga Ashiru among other eminent personalities in the country.

The JOGSOBA national president seized the opportunity to advocate for the reversal of boarding system in the school.

He explained that boarding system brings about a total child in the students, hence the resolve of the old boys to renovate the boarding facility in the school.

Osoba lamented that government is not doing enough in the area of education considering the amount of money allocated in its yearly budget for the sector.

“We are not getting the best out of the students any longer because the boarding system is no longer there. We have resolved to make sacrifices having discovered the lapses by contributing our quota to the revival of boarding system in this school.

“Ijebu Ode Grammar School is the oldest secondary school in Ijebuland. As old boys, we are proud of our heritage and that is why we have been promoting the ideals and ideas of the founding fathers.

“We”ll continue to make the school one of the best in Nigeria. The school has produced people of integrity and ones that have made landmarks on their various professional callings,” he said.

The celebration programme kicked started with awareness walk around the town on Wednesday, inter-house sport competition today (Thursday), Jumat Service on Friday, the turning of the sod on Saturday which is the Founder’s Day and award ceremonies while thanksgiving service will hold on Sunday at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ijebu -Ode.

Politics / Herdsmen Killing: Fulani Leader Pledges Support To End Crisis In Ekiti State by Yarnvibes(f): 10:32am On Jan 26, 2018
The Ekiti State’s Serikin Fulani, Alhaji Ahmad Mahmud, has said that he is ready to support any move or effort by the state government to end crisis between farmers and herdsmen in the state.

He said his people were prepared to cooperate with traditional rulers in the state to fish out bad eggs in cattle rearing business.

Speaking with our reporter in Ado Ekiti yesterday, Mahmud also lamented that his members faced similar threat from the marauders who usually killed and in most cases stole their cattle.

He said he had directed members of hereditary association under him, such as Jaminatul-Fulube to cooperate with relevant stakeholders in finding permanent solution to the menace.

Alhaji Mahmud condemned what he termed “hasty generalization of Fulanis as terrorists and criminally minded ethnic group in Nigeria,” saying such assumption is dangerous for the country.

The Fulani leader who described Yoruba, particularly Ekiti, as their second home, said some of them had lived in the geo-political zone for well over 50 years.

He said: “This is our home, because many of us and even our fathers were born here. So, we have no reason to cause trouble for anybody because, where to live is not where to destroy.”

“It is very sad and most unfortunate that each time there was violent clash between herders and farmers, the media always look in the direction of Fulani as culprits. What the media fails to recognize is that there are other tribes that are involved in this business. Among the tribes are :Hausa, Fulani, Bororo, and Bakolo . Others are Kaje and Tivs from the northern part of the country

“We are therefore, calling on government as well as security agencies to conduct full investigation into the renewed hostilities between farmers and herders in the state with a view to apprehending the culprits.”

NYSC / Illegal Migration: No Better Life Outside Nigeria, El-rufai Warn Youths by Yarnvibes(f): 8:38am On Jan 25, 2018
Governor Nasiru El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State on Wednesday cautioned the youths against migrating illegally out of the country, saying rather, they should remain, work hard and build bright future for themselves.

The governor, who made the remark when he received officials of NYSC and PAIGAS who paid him a courtesy visit in his office, said the campaign instituted by the two on illegal migration was laudable.

He asked them to extend the campaign to the Nigerian Governors Forum, to accelerate engagement with the youths and help address the menace.

“Illegal migration is an unusual type of brain drain with several devastating effects synonymous with modern day slavery.

“The youth population in Nigeria nurture the wrong impression that Europe and the West are greener, whereas, unknown to them, the condition of living there is hard, unsympathetic and devoid of community life that accommodates the interest of one another.”

The governor, therefore, advised the youths to liberate themselves from “erroneous sense of entitlement, work hard, acquire necessary knowledge, experience, get involved and seize political authority” as practiced worldwide.

He pledged to partner with the NYSC and PAIGAS in this respect.

El-Rufa’i assured the state government would provide additional hostel accommodation and upgrade of facilities at the NYSC Orientation camp in Kaduna.

Earlier, Amb. Martin Uhomoibhi, the President, Pan-African Institute for Global Affairs and Strategy (PAIGAS), said the group consists of former Nigerians envoys and other imminent Nigerians who are committing themselves to this cause.

“We have decided to use our wealth of experience and resources to sensitize corps members on the dangers associated with illegal migration.”

Uhomoibhi expressed appreciation to the NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen Suleiman Kazaure for accommodating PAIGAS to reach out to serving corps members, as the bulk of illegal migrants were graduates.

NYSC / ‘Take Care Of NYSC Members’, Gov. Ajimobi Tells Residents by Yarnvibes(f): 3:47pm On Jan 18, 2018
Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Thursday urged traditional rulers, local council chairmen and other residents to ensure that National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) members posted to the state are well taken care of.

Ajimobi made the appeal at the swearing-in of the 2017 Batch B, Stream II corps members in Iseyin, Oyo State.

The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Abayomi Oke, said that corps members posted to ministries, departments and agencies should not be rejected.

He said that the corps members should be assigned to challenging responsibilities in their places of primary assignment, to make them nation builders and assets to national development.

Ajimobi said the scheme is a beacon of hope and reference point, with regard to productive channelling of youthful intelligence, energy and skills for national development.

He said that the orientation course was primarily aimed at inculcating discipline, hard work and integrity in the Nigerian graduate youths.

The governor, therefore, advised the members to use the opportunity provided by the orientation to develop positive attitudes that would help them to surpass their predecessors’ achievements.

Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mrs Ifeoma Anidobi, said the orientation course was unique, being the first time the state would host more than one state at its permanent orientation camp.

Anidobi urged the 2,294 corps members to see their deployment as the basis for national unity, which the scheme had championed since inception 45 years ago.

She told them to contribute their quota to the unity and advancement of Nigeria in the course of their service year.

“The government of the day, in her drive to engine the wheel of development, embarked on massive rural transformation.

“As agents of change, your services will be required in most semi-urban communities, to make this mission a reality.

“Work assiduously for the development of the country, and assist government to empower rural dwellers with your acquired knowledge and training, by raising the standard of living of the populace,” she said.

The coordinator advised the corps members to make optimal use of the opportunities provided by the orientation course, such as skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development programme.

“Remember that the era of white collar jobs has given way to self-development and empowerment programmes.

“So, key into the system and strive to be job creators and not job seekers,” she said.

Anidobi commended the Oyo State Government and the indigenes for their unflinching support to the NYSC scheme, and for being good hosts to the corps members.

Music/Radio / [throwback Music] Eedris Abdulkareem – Mr Lecturer by Yarnvibes(f): 7:24pm On Dec 15, 2017
Going down to the memory lane Off Mr Abdulkareem’s sophomore solo album is Mr. Lecturer – a song that addresses the problem of students using money and séx to solicit higher grades in Nigerian colleges and universities, as well as male lecturers exploiting female students by requesting séx and money in exchange for good grades.

The track gathered so much buzz that it sealed his status as one of hip-hop’s most revered acts in Nigeria as far back as the year 2002.

Interestingly, Eedris is still considered by many as the king of hip-hop and pioneer of rap in Nigeria. With six albums down the line.

NYSC / Will NYSC Cv/jobs Portal Deliver? by Yarnvibes(f): 2:10pm On Dec 14, 2017
Stakeholders are excited by the launch of a CV jobs portal by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). They say it will provide opportunities for corps members because of its data gathering potential. But there is need for continuous collaboration between NYSC and its partners to strengthen the deal, reports KOFOWOROLA BELO-OSAGIE.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and some partners have launched a CV bank and jobs portal (nyscjobs.org) for Corps members.

The portal allows Corps members to upload their curriculum vitae (CV) and employers to post vacancies and screen candidates.

It was developed by the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) in conjunction with Diamond Bank, Dragnet, Blogme, Gr8tjobs.ng and Sigma Pensions.

Speaking at the event, NYSC Director-General, Brig Gen Suleiman Kazaure expressed the hope that the platform would boost the chances of Corps members in getting a job faster.

“Despite the obvious difficulty of securing white collar jobs and the overriding benefits of self-employment, a good number of our graduates are still inclined to trying their lucks with paid employment. This is why management considers it appropriate to buy into the idea of helping corps members to package themselves for employability in the highly competitive labour market.

“The portal we are launching today will, among other benefits, serve as a platform for Corps members to get information on job vacancies and market themselves to prospective employers, serve as a large pool for employers searching for suitable candidates, and provides means of verification of credentials,” he said.

With last Friday’s launch, the portal became a national platform for corps members serving in the nooks and crannies of Nigeria to showcase their skills and experience.

The initiative is a product of many years’ labour. In an interview with The Nation , the NYSC State coordinator, Prince Mohammed Momoh, said the idea was first suggested by some corps members who tried to implement it but were limited by the one-year tenure of the service and technical expertise required.

SAED Assistant Director Mrs Rachael Idaewor said the involvement of private sector partners gave life to the idea.

Value for corps members

The CV and Jobs portal allows corps members to register, upload their CVs and update with skills, certifications and experiences they acquire in the first two years after graduation. Me Baba Ikazaboh, Managing Director of Dragnet, said corps members would do themselves a disservice if they did not make good use of the opportunity.

“There are 350,000 corpers also responsible for making it successful. They need to almost on a daily or weekly basis be on the portal updating their CVs,” he said.

He also said with employers knowing the platform is specifically for corps members, they (corps members) could be sure of job vacancies that would not require long years of experience that they would not have. He added that the partners have also ensured that vacancies are dated and removed when old so corps members do not apply for taken jobs.

The portal also allows corps members to post short videos that encapsulate their skills, competencies, experiences and qualifications. Mr Andre Ugbebor of Blogme who did a presentation on the Video CV feature, said it gives the corps members a face that allows employers to make better decisions about the kind of candidates they are looking for.

Mr Arek Bawa, managing director of Blogme, said it was an ultimate opportunity for corps members to put their best foot forward.

“You need to distinguish yourselves; you need a platform to show off so employers notice you. Employers know about your knowledge. But what other skills do you have? What aer your soft skills? Are you a team player? Do you have problem solving skills?

Lauding the initiative and partnership, head, Retail Banking, Diamond Bank, Robert Hill, said the portal was a good response to what young people wanted based on research by the bank.

“The youths are really important to us. We cannot ignore 60 per cent of the population. They are the people we need to be helping. It is great to see the NYSC helping youths to showcase themselves,” he said.

Value for Employers

At the click of a button, the portal gives employers access to a database of over 350,000 fresh talents for entry-level jobs at no cost.

They are allowed to register, submit company profiles, post job vacancies and filter according to their specific requirements.

Mrs Omomene Odike, CEO of Gr8tjobs.ng, said the portal addressed the yearnings of recruiters who had sought for years a veritable database of qualified graduates.

To her, it is a shift from the analogue way of doing things to embrace the advantages technology can offer.

She said: “Being an entrepreneur on my own and also a top recruiting firm, it is always very difficult to have data. People complain in Nigeria we need jobs, but at the end of the day we don’t have one central database. You get them in bits and pieces and at the end of the day, some of them are outdated such that by the time you call them you find out that they have been in the system for over 10 years so they are not even entry level but they don’t have jobs. But this CV portal and NYSC initiative means once people just graduate from school, it means they are fresh, it means they have just entered the system.

“So it is a very clean way and very structured way for us to have candidates that are just coming into the work force and of course a database that we can verify because nobody who is not a corps member could actually register because you have also have to register with your NYSC codes. It is huge and we don’t have to scratch our brains go everywhere looking for candidates to employ.”

While the big recruiters are excited by the huge data the portal would generage, Ikazaboh said the value for small-scale employers was even more as they would not have to pay so much to get qualified people to run their businesses. He urged even corps members starting businesses to use the platform to recruit workers.

“Employers need to be on the portal to put your vacancies there. It doesn’t cost you money. For the SMEs that are just starting up you cannot afford expensive recruitment companies. Here is a portal that allows you do it free. Use it; save some cost,” he said.

Is success certain?

Parties to the deal, the NYSC, employers and Corps members, have lauded the initiative. However, whether it will fulfil its potential as such is another matter.

Mrs Odike said without all partners playing their roles, the portal would not come alive.

“This portal will eliminate waste of time and paperwork. But all three stakeholders must play their parts – the corps members must upload their CVs, the NYSC must sustain the portal, and the employers must post job vacancies. Technology does not work on its own. It is people that make technology work,” she said.

Ikazaboh added: “It is really team work – employers, the employees and the NYSC – that is what will make it work.”

Awareness about the portal among corps members, especially Batch B, who completed their orientation on Monday, is still low. About five corps members interviewed by The Nation in Lagos said they knew nothing about the portal.

However, older corps members said they were aware. One of them, Marvelous Ehima, said they had been told to register.

“They told us about it. I have not registered but I intend to do so.

Mrs Idaewor said the corps members would be encouraged to upload their CVs.

She promised to ensure that corps members signed up.
