Culture / Benue Bans Men From Spending More Than N100, 000 On Traditional Marriage by Yarnvibes(f): 2:05pm On Jul 21, 2017
The traditional ruler of Otukpa, the headquarters of Ogbadibo LGA of Benue, Chief Sir Sunday Ekele Jp has banned intending groom in the community from spending more than N100, 000 on traditional wedding.

According to Chief Ekele, the decision became imperative following complaints from young men in the community that outrageous bride price has been discouraging them from getting married.

Speaking on a live programme monitored on Joy FM, Otukpo on Thursday, the monarch said any one found flaunting the new law would be penalized.

“Money should not prevent anyone from getting married in our community. From now onward, no one should spend more than hundred thousand naira before he gets a wife in our community. We need to encourage the young men so they won’t be scared of going into marriage,” he said.

Recall that the Chairman, Tiv Area Traditional Council led by the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Ochivirigh, Prof. James Ayatse had recently set up a 15-member committee to do something about the high bride price and expensive burial requirements for burial rites in Tiv land.

The committee, which has three months to submit its report, is headed by His Royal Highness, Chief Jam Gbinde Ter Ikyor, and had been directed to investigate the reasons for the high bride price and recommend ways of addressing the challenge.

Jobs/Vacancies / Youth Unemployment In Nigeria: A Ticking Time-bomb by Yarnvibes(f): 6:23pm On Jul 20, 2017
According to official statistics, and the latest data released by the nation’s Bureau of Statistics, over 28 million Nigerians are currently unemployed or underemployed. But what is more worrisome is that a large number of this unemployed population are young people between the age of 15 and 35 years. With social tension taking on terrifying forms, such large numbers of young people creates the possibility of imminent social implosion unless the justifiable anger is given a positive direction. There is therefore the need for ending the crisis of unemployment to be put into correct socialist perspectives, which offers long lasting solutions of economic expansion and job creation.

According to Premium Times (an online news medium) of 6 June, 2017, the latest unemployment rate of the country is 14.2 percent, and the data is from the fourth quarter of 2016. Based on this data, “a total of 28.58 million persons in the Nigerian labour force” were unemployed or underemployed. The Premium Times report, which was extracted from the latest quarterly report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Nigeria’s unemployment situation, further indicates that there is a steady growth in the workforce population (which increased from 108.03 million in the 3rd quarter to 108.59 million in the fourth quarter). As gloomy as the figure of unemployment looks, it could spell doom for the youth and the entire society. Business Day of Feb 14, 2017 declared that the scary statistics of youth unemployment “shows that young people of today face the likelihood of becoming victims of both unemployment and restiveness”. Emerging events in the country show that young people are not only victims of restiveness; they are becoming army of several forms of dangerously evolving social unrest from the violent ethnic clashes in parts of the North to separatist agitations in the South as well as kidnapping, cultism, prostitution and gangsterism.

The recession witnessed in the country’s economy has compounded the crisis of unemployment. Several big businesses faced with plummeting profits have no qualms resorting to mass retrenchment while underpaying ‘survivors’, despite overworking them and high inflation rate. But the recession which has become an overused excuse among political office holders is caused largely by the contradictions of the capitalist economic system which in its quest for profit at all cost inevitably enters periodic crises which manifests this time around in the form of low world economic growth, high crude inventory and crashing oil prices that induced the current recession, including creating a record-high unemployment rate and further throwing ordinary people into the abyss of poverty.

The Punch Newspaper of 18 May 2017 in its news article on Oxfam report on Inequality in Nigeria states the following in the clearest of terms: “Oxfam International on Wednesday in Abuja unveiled its ‘Inequality in Nigeria’ report, which revealed the harsh economic reality in a country where 112 million citizens live in abject poverty, stating that the combined wealth of five of her richest citizens (Aliko Dangote; Mike Adenuga; Femi Otedola; Folorunsho Alakija, and Abdulsamad Rabiu), put at about $29.9bn, could end extreme poverty in the nation.”

It is an open secret that these billionaires owe their wealth to exploitation of workers and the magnanimous government policies that exempt them from certain taxes, provide them with illicit loans and billions in bailout funds, and same polices that grant them monopolies in the business of producing crude oil, telecommunications, cement production and consumables. Assuming this recession ends tomorrow and oil becomes more profitable, the stranglehold of these billionaires on the economy would only end up increasing their wealth base and would not create sufficient jobs that can reverse current unemployment. Meanwhile, creating jobs is tied to any hope of exiting recession.

As a developing country in need of urgent infrastructural development, the situation of unemployment is an absurdity. Because the urgent need of the country for road and rail networks, electricity, safe water, expansion of schools, construction of health facilities, and equipping them etc., should normally create millions of living-wage paying jobs. This will require too that government puts an end to the “contract system” of executing government’s projects, which relies on privately owned big businesses to carry out projects on behalf of government. Aside the fact that government would create more permanent jobs by relying on its department of Public Works for construction of roads, housing and public facilities, it would also cut costs. What is needed is to bring the government’s works department to standard level of efficiency is standard equipment, proportionate personnel employment and training as well as giving workers the democratic control of these departments instead of bureaucrats and government appointees. However, the underling motive of cutbacks and pecuniary gains that politicians make from the ‘contract system’ bar them from taking a responsible control of the economy.

The Buhari/Osinbajo-led regime has proved that it is incapable of reversing the unemployment rate in the country. The administration’s signature response to unemployment is anchored on its Social Investment Programme, which is also known as the N-Power scheme. The scheme aims to employ graduates, on temporary basis, as teachers, tax collectors or agricultural extension workers, and non-graduates as artisan-trainees, with a payment of N30, 000 which is lesser than the N56, 000 that the organised labour is demanding as minimum wage in the wake of galloping inflation and recession. The impotency of the scheme is reflected in the remark of the nation’s Statistician General that Nigeria needs to create 2 million jobs annually to be able to reverse the growing rate of unemployment. (The Cable, 15 December, 2016).

The media widely reported the comment of President Buhari’s aide on Job Creation that within five days of opening the N-Power portal for registration of applicants, 753, 307 people applied to benefit from the scheme. And out of this huge and increasing figure of jobseekers, the government has made known its intention to hire only 350, 000 unemployed graduates under the N-Power volunteer Corps (Premium Times, 27 February, 2017). In reality, the programme is implemented for the purpose of propaganda rather than national planning; because there is simply no tinge of strategic planning in a programme that would employ hundreds of thousand teachers, who would end up without teaching materials and even classrooms.

It is wishful thinking that the Buhari/Osinbajo regime could take the drastic steps needed to create jobs, without pressure from the organised masses. This is why young people, who are first victims of this socio-economic crisis, must be ready to organise and fight for policies that would create decent jobs, and call for the abolition of policies that are known to compound unemployment crisis such as privatisation and tax holidays for the rich. It is unfortunate that most existing youth organisations, though with no mandate from ordinary young people, are not ready to confront government on questions related to political and economic policies. While some enthusiastic youths innocently flock to their fold, some others take to crimes and cyber frauds as way of expressing annoyance at being unemployed.

History has placed on the shoulders of the working class movement the responsibility to organise and mobilise workers and the youths on basis of clear perspectives and programmes that would abolish poverty and unemployment. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the United Labour Congress (ULC) must develop a strategy to organize the youth which could start from setting up branches of these labour centres in the communities and rolling out campaign action plans like mass meetings, leafleting and public demonstrations to begin to demand creation of decent jobs and opportunities for young people. But while resistance against polic ies that create unemployment may compel government to capitulate and temporarily grant some of the demands of a movement of young people, it would take the enthronement of a workers and poor people’s government anchored on socialist programmes to seriously build and diversify the economy and plan Nigeria for ordinary people. Such a government would bring the mainstream of the economy under democratic control and management of working and ordinary people, in their various workplaces and communities, for the benefit of every Nigerian, rather than to profit the wealthy billionaires.

Education / Why Cases Of Examination Malpractice Are Rising – WAEC by Yarnvibes(f): 10:04am On Jun 09, 2017
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said that the pressure on some school principals to increase the performance of their pupils in external examinations is responsible for the upsurge in the number of examination malpractice cases in the country.

This was stated in a communiqué issued by the Nigeria Examination’s Committee (NEC) of WAEC at the end of its 63rd meeting.

The examination body, therefore, called on the All Nigerian Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) to “act as a whistleblower to the council by reporting acts of examination malpractice during WASSCE.’’

The NEC called on government and all stakeholders to intensify the fight against exam malpractice by sanctioning reported erring supervisors and invigilators.”

It commended the Benue State Government for issuing queries to principals indicted for aiding and abetting examination malpractice, adding that other state governments, “should set up machinery to sanction erring supervisors and invigilators to serve as deterrent to others.”

The committee also said that examination centres caught engaging in examination malpractice would be delisted, while candidates would be barred from sitting for WASSCE for an unspecified number of years.

The communiqué read in part, “The committee approved that the entire results of candidates involved in proven cases of exam malpractice, which attracted the cancellation of the entire results be cancelled while the subject results of those involved in proven cases, which attracted cancellation of subject results, be similarly cancelled.

“In addition, some candidates will also suffer other sanctions, such as barring them from sitting for the council’s examination for a certain number of years, while some examination centres will be delisted.”

The NEC is the highest decision-making organ of WAEC on examination-related matters in Nigeria. The communiqué was signed by the Head of Public Affairs, WAEC, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu.

Education / JAMB Warns Candidates Against Seeking UTME Score Upgrade by Yarnvibes(f): 7:47am On Jun 09, 2017
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has dissociated itself from a social media account on Facebook calling on candidates to come for their UTME score upgrade.

The board warn the public and desperate candidates against falling victim of this scam and being defrauded of their hard earned money.

According to a statement by the Board’s Head of Media, “We wish to state unequivocally that the statement was not from JAMB, its Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede , or any of its offices nor has he authorized any persons or group to post such an inglorious request and statement.

“JAMB therefore want to state that the results gotten by candidates from the 2017 UTME were the true reflection of their performance after going through a full proof scoring mechanisms. As such, it did not intend to review the scores or commissioned any body to do that. JAMB has also not been directed by any organ of government to so.

“JAMB wants to use this opportunity to state that its examination is not a fail or pass examination as there are other variables that are considered outside the examination to arrive at a successful admission.

There is no need for this desperation as getting “high” scores as being touted by fraudulent characters is not a guarantee for admission.

He finally stated that effort are being made to arrest the perpetrators of this scam, and called on the public to visit the closes JAMB office if they have enquiries.

Education / Take Ownership Of Lautech From Oyo & Osun | Protesting Students Urge Fg by Yarnvibes(f): 7:38am On Jun 09, 2017
Students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso have demanded the transfer of ownership of the school from the Osun and Oyo state governments to the Federal Government.

The students said this on Thursday when they stormed the National Assembly to protest the closure of their school for over 10 months.

They urged the lawmakers to intervene in the disagreement between the members of staff and the Osun and Oyo governments.

In their petition, the students said both states now have their own institutions and have abandoned LAUTECH.

“It is pertinent, we also bring to your notice sir, that Osun State had a separate state university, just as Oyo State recently inaugurated hers, leaving LAUTECH in a dilemma,” they stated.

Leader of House, Femi Gbajabiamila received the students on behalf of the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

According to his media aide, the lawmaker promised that a solution to the problem will be found.

He however explained that it might not be exactly possible for the Federal Government to take over the school without passing through some rigorous process.

“When we received your petition to the House, we hurriedly left the chambers to listen to you because we understand your plight.

“Education is a priority for us in the National Assembly and we will look into this matter.

“Let me bring to your attention that Honourable Segun Odebunmi from Oyo State, had brought a motion on the floor of the House and a resolution was passed for the House Committee on Education to look into this matter and come up with recommendations that will guide the House because there are many unintended consequences that can come out of students’ absence from school,” the statement quoted Gbajabiamila as saying.

He was also quoted to have said, “You are not fatherless or an orphan; you have a government with your interest at heart.

“But, there are complications here because we run a constitutional democracy; your institution was established by two state governments and from your request, it is not that easy for the Federal Government to take over a state-owned institution because we run a democracy.

“But there are ways we can come in because the welfare of citizens is our primary responsibility and the issue of education is shared among the three tiers of government.”

Education / Nigerian Students Barricade N’assembly, Want FG To Take Over LAUTECH by Yarnvibes(f): 4:48pm On Jun 08, 2017
Students drawn from various faculties of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, on Thursday, stormed the National Assembly, demanding that the federal government should takeover the funding and administration of the institution.

The students also decried the prolonged industrial action, which had kept them in one level for almost 2 years.

Fabinfos recalls that, LAUTECH was established in 1990 under the old Oyo state. One year later, the state of Osun was created and, with Ogbomosho carved into the present Osun state, the institution has been at the mercies of both states.

“It is pertinent, we also bring to your notice Sir, that Osun state had, had a separate state university, just as Oyo state recently commissioned hers, leaving LAUTECH in more dilemma,” one of the protesters told this reporter.

Consequently, the institution has been entangled with frequent strike actions, which is prominently anchored on poor funding.

President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution, Comrade Bakare Solace Olateinde, while addressing the press, said, leaving the school in the hands of Osun or Oyo state would practically spell doom for the students.

He said, non-payment of salaries, allowances and arrears accounted to the incessant industrial actions which has made students to outgrow their age, in their academic pursuit.

“The 500 level and other students in junior levels have remained in the same level since 2015”, Olateinde said.

Speaking further, the SUG President said, “our alumni always recount their experiences to us as they are always being faced with genuine shock and barefaced humbling, that despite their good results and the standard of the institution from which they had graduated from, they are always being met with rejection at the labour market, due to age factor, which was solemnly due to time wastage and delay before completion of their academic education.”

“We hereby, passionately appeal to the federal government to consider our appeal to save the lives and future of over thirty five thousand (35,000) students of this citadel of learning, ” he submitted.

Jobs/Vacancies / N-power: Osinbajo Orders Portal To Be Opened June 17 by Yarnvibes(f): 8:48am On Jun 07, 2017
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has directed that online portal of the Federal Government’s job initiative, N-Power, be re-opened on June 17.

This was disclosed by the Minister of State, Budget and Planning, Zainab Ahmed on Tuesday in Abuja.

Ahmed said the FG will ensure the programme accommodated more beneficiaries this year, while encouraging youths to apply for the programme.

She also stated that the government’s National Social Investment Programme (N-SIP), has empowered over 1.6 million Nigerians so far.

“For example, in N-Power Scheme that 200,000 beneficiaries have been employed, we are supposed to increase it to 500,000 beneficiaries in 2017.

“There is opportunity in the N-Power Programme for employment. There is opportunity in the GEEP for you to get finances to be able to start businesses.

Please, this is real, it is working, join the process and be a beneficiary,” the Minister said.

Ahmed added that the programme has not attained its set target, because of the delay in implementation.

“The deployment, release of funds didn’t start till October 2016; and it is so because we want to make sure that the programme is planned properly.

“We want to make sure that each beneficiary has bank account linked to BVN; we are targeting the right people, not just people nominated by big people.

“That took a lot of time, but we thank God that the programme is going on well and it is now easier to upscale it,” she explained.

Phones / Senate Urges NCC To Sanction Telecom Service Providers Over Poor Services by Yarnvibes(f): 2:41pm On Jun 06, 2017
The Nigeria Senate on Tuesday rose in condemnation of poor services rendered by GSM network operators in the country.

In a motion sponsored by Senator Andy Uba (APC), representing Anambra South Senatorial district, he expressed concern over increasing rate of dropped calls and other unwholesome practices, saying GSM operators in Nigeria have robbed Nigerians in billions of naira.

Explaining experiences of poor services, Uba said, “Nigerians encountered incomprehensible speech and voice quality that sounds like speaking from the bottom of a fish tank.”

He was emphatic that GSM operators were reaping billions from subscribers for services not provided.

Uba’s motion also pointed that it was wrong for subscribers to be charged per minute which he said had given undue advantage to operators as they ended up charging the whole minute if they were drop calls.

He further maintained that GSM operators were recalcitrant to the regulatory body’s directives in the past, hence, he urged the upper chamber to prevail on service providers to refund for disrupted calls henceforth.

Part of the prayers sustained was the directive that Nigeria Communications Commission and other relevant agencies should investigate the causes of dropped calls and see to improving on it.

NYSC / NYSC Wants Skills Training For Corps Members Compulsory by Yarnvibes(f): 4:47pm On Jun 03, 2017
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has urged the Federal Government to make its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) compulsory for all corps members in the country.

Mrs Chinyere Ekwe, Head of SAED in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) office of NYSC, made the call in an interview in Abuja on Saturday.

She said that making the training compulsory to all corps members would increase the number of youths trained in various skills targeted at growth and development of the nation.

Ekwe explained that SAED was introduced by the scheme to enable corps members to learn and develop one or more skills for self-reliance.

According to her, the initiative was introduced to support Federal Government’s efforts at addressing unemployment in the country, but presently, it is not compulsory for the corps members.

“This defeats the aim of introducing the programme, because if more youths participate in skills training, more youths will become self-employed, self-reliant and employers of labour

“If more youths are trained, they will in turn train many others, but in a situation where this programme is not compulsory for them, you find that a lot of them may show lackadaisical attitude towards it.

“I also think that there is need to reduce the training fee to a minimal rate so that more corps members can participate.

“The FCT Coordinator, Mr Salawu Abdulrazak, has tried to bring down the training fee to N10, 000 for six-month training and for corps members can to pay in installments.

“If more is done to support the corps members by bringing down the fee, it will encourage more of them to join,” Ekwe said.

She also urged the government to support the scheme with provision of materials, saying that training large number of corps members yearly in various skills without materials was a major challenge to the scheme.

According to her, right now in the camp, hands-on training is free, but there are no materials for corps members to use in the training. We also do not have well-equipped skills centres in the area councils.

Ekwe commended the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) for its effort in providing an ICT center at the orientation camp for training of corps members.

She urged serving corps members to make use of the opportunity to learn one or more skills in order to become skillful, self-reliant and productive.

She said that emphasis on certificate was waning in Nigeria, adding that it was therefore why learning a skill or more had become necessary.

“You will be empowering yourself and other youths by doing this”.

The NYSC official said that many corps members who had passed through the programme had established businesses, adding that SAED’s partners had also continued to support corps members with start-up capital.

She said that partners like Bank of Industry (BoI) gave corps members loan as much as N2 million, while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) also had a loan scheme that could give N3 million to a corps member.

Phones / TECNO Marks 2017 Children’s Day With Scholarship For Kids Across Nigeria [PHOTOS by Yarnvibes(f): 4:27pm On Jun 03, 2017
The 2017 Children’s Day celebration is one that several children across the country will not forget in a hurry as leading smartphone manufacturer TECNO Mobile decided to take their annual Children’s Day celebration to major cities across Nigeria.

This year’s activity marked the brand’s fourth consecutive year of awarding scholarships to top performing kids. Though previous editions of the scholarship focused on rewarding highflying kids across the country one city at a time, however this year, the mobile brand resolved to simultaneously reward youngsters in government primary and secondary schools across the country.

The activity was titled “I Am The Future” greeted selected schools across the country where the brand distributed books and other stationary to the pupils. Interestingly, exams were conducted for the children and the most outstanding ones were immediately awarded a N100, 000 scholarship award.

Among the winners for this year’s N100,000 scholarship award were Tom Divine of Ilupeju Primary School and Hamzat Quadri of Community Primary School Ilupeju, Mushin LGA of Lagos.

Asides the cash prizes given to the pupils in Lagos, winners from schools in Delta state were rewarded with some mobile devices. The winners from secondary school got a TECNO W3 device while the 1st runner-ups each went home with a TECNO Y2 and then the 2nd runner-ups got iFlux lamps.

The contribution of private and government stakeholders in the educational sector should never be exhausted due to the dynamic nature of education and its importance to nation building.

Thus, it is important to mention that while the government is expected to assume more responsibilities for the growth and development of our children, private entities should also play a more inclusive role in salvaging the future of these young ones like TECNO Mobile is already doing so that they will be able to compete with their counterparts in other parts of the world.

NYSC / NYSC Member Complains About Food Being Served In Camp (photos) by Yarnvibes(f): 2:54am On Jun 03, 2017
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Kwara state have complained about the kind of food they are being served during the orientation camp.

In an exclusive report sent by a corp member in the state on the condition of anonymity, he said they have been served substandard food.

He noted that the situation was different when the director-general of NYSC paid them a visit as they were served very good food.

Read the report below:

"This is a sample of tea given at NYSC camp yikpata Kwara where NYSC officials embezzle money with pen and make substandard food for corps members.

"This is totally uncalled for. The director general came for a visit and that very day a good meal was prepared and since he left the condition has worsen.

"A situation that someone who picked a phone has been judged and punished by the camp court and still brought outside for a public disgrace that is totally not acceptable. It would result to stigma and total isolation as long as he would remain in camp.
"While some NYSC officials have been embezzling money and yet not charged, we were told that 500 naira was allocated by the government for daily feeding.

"Considering the total population of the camp which is 1900 making a multiplication is 950 000 for daily feeding and yet we are served junks, something need to be done."

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Attah, the coordinator of the NYSC said 49 corps members have been sent back home over health issues.

According to reports, Attah disclosed this information in Ede camp, Osun state.

Attah made this known on Wednesday, May 31, during the inspection of the permanent orientation by Brigadier General Sule Zakari Kazaure, the director-general of the NYSC.
